2012 PRSACrash Statistics

Between 17th and 56th Street

38 reported crashes between 2009 and 2012, 3 fatalities

63 percent of crashes occurred at night

42 percent of crashes involved alcohol

Observations

Pedestrians crossing outside of a crosswalk;

Pedestrians crossing against the signal;

Motorist’ failure to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk;

Pedestrians in the roadway;

Motorists’ failed to yield to pedestrian crossing driveway.

Short Term Improvements Signage

Installed No Pedestrian signs and “Use Crosswalks” signs in median of

MD 528 from 52nd – 59th Streets.

Eliminated right turn on red at 28th & 127th Streets

Pavement Markings

Installed “No Pedestrian X-ing” pavement markings on top of curb from 52nd

– 59th Streets.

Signal Timing

Split phased side streets at 28th, 94th, & 130th Streets.

Added “advanced peds” to signal timing along entire MD 528 corridor

Initiated “ped recall” from May 1st through Oct. 1st , 10pm – 3am at: 17th,

Dolphin, 23rd, 26th, 28th, 30th, 33rd, 40th, 41st, 45th, 52nd, 56th, 59th Streets

Added 7 more seconds of “Walk” time for peds to cross.

Bus Stops

Transit stop relocated to southwest corner at 49th Street, transit stop at 32nd

Street (unsignalized) relocated to 33rd Street (signalized) on northbound

MD 528.

Mid Term Improvements

Completed speed study and lowered speed limit from 40 mph to 35 mph between 33rd and 62nd Streets

Constructed pedestrian signal at 54th Street

Removed depressed curb medians

Filled in vegetated medians

ADA improvements underway (bump-outs)
