The First Grade classes at Oregon Elementary School celebrated the 100th Day of School by participating in various activities in the different classrooms.

Students worked together to create works of art out of 100

objects, designed and wrote about what they would look like and do when they are 100 years old, completed a 100 cup stacking challenge, and tried to see how many push ups, sit ups, and addition problems they could complete in 100

seconds! The children and staff alike had an incredible time

celebrating the growth that has been made in 100 days of learning!

Since our last edition, lots of exciting things have been happening at DLR. Girls’ basketball and wrestling are in full swing, the school play participants have been diligently practicing and rehearsing for their performances, student council remains active, winter MAP testing is complete and we know turn our attention to ISAT testing that will take place in March.

Girls’ basketball and wrestling are both a little over halfway through their seasons.

All teams are enjoying successes within their programs. Successes are defined by the manner in which our student/athletes respond to the challenges put before them, whether measured in wins/losses or the

amount of progress being made in becoming better.

Another group of students is working hard to prepare for their performances of this year’s school play.

Mrs. Leamanczyk, eighth grade English teacher and director of the play, has commented on the positive work ethic she has observed in this group.

The performances are scheduled to take place on Friday, February 21st and Saturday, February 22nd. Please call the school for more information.

Student Council has a number of things currently on their plate. Our “Eagle Hours Program” remains front and center offering

our students the opportunity to volunteer for community service hours. Committees have been busy selling Valentine candy grams and preparing for the February 15th Valentine’s dance.

The students also spent President’s Day, Monday February 17th, at Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort to reward jobs well done so far this year.

Winter MAP testing is complete and provides another data point to better enable our staff at DLR to make informed decisions regarding student schedules, progress monitoring and instruction.

Test results also allow for our staff to provide needed interventions to address gaps in student learning.

A new addition to the arsenal of supports to address these gaps is the use of an online resource known as Kahn Academy.

These short instructional clips are chosen for students in an area in which they have an identified deficiency.

Diligent work in this area also provides an opportunity for our students to perform better in testing situations.

Speaking of student testing, that brings us to the topic of ISAT testing 2014. Currently ISAT testing is scheduled to take place Monday, March 10th through Friday, March 14th.

The test will continue to have a different focus as a greater

percentage of it again this year will be comprised of more rigorous questions.

These questions are examples of what students will see when they begin taking the new state test, PARCC exam, next spring.

The new PARCC exam will align directly to the state adopted Common Core Standards. Staff members at DLR have been working extremely hard at making sure our curriculum is aligned to the new standards.

We anticipate this paying off during our ISAT testing in March.

Respectfully,Kip Crandall

The Oregon Agriculture Department offers six different courses this year including Biological Science Applications in Agriculture (BSAA), Introduction to Agriculture, Agriculture Mechanics and Technology, Horticulture Production, and Junior High Enrichment.

The BSAA class is a dual credit course with Highland Community College.

This class focuses on plant and animal science in the agriculture industry.

Students studied biotechnology, alternative energy sources and dairy foods production. Introduction to Agriculture is a freshman or sophomore level course that studies all topics in the agriculture field.

This fall students learned about opportunities available in FFA, soil science, and identification of common crops, weeds, and insects.

Agriculture Mechanics and Technology spent the fall learning about land measurement and surveying as well as small engines.

This course is also a dual credit course with Highland Community College.

Horticulture Production spent much of the semester learning about various greenhouse crops, plant reproduction techniques, and caring for the poinsettias that were sold over the Holiday season.

The Junior High Enrichment course is a 3-week class for 7th and 8th grade students to learn about various agriculture topics studied at the high school.

Students learned about plants, animals, electricity, and small engines. Students that complete the agriculture program of study at Oregon High School can graduate with 11 college credits from Highland Community College, free of charge.

This is a great opportunity that many of our students are using to get a head start on college.

Enrollment in an agriculture class also means the opportunity to participate in the Oregon FFA Chapter.

The chapter’s goals are to promote premier leadership, personal growth, and career success.

This is done through the participation in leadership workshops, competitions, and a Supervised Agriculture Experience.

The chapter spent much of the fall preparing for and competing in various contests such as Horse Evaluation, Land-Use Contest, Agronomy Contest, and the Dairy Foods Contest.

Other activities included serving at the Rockford Rescue Mission, helping at the Autumn on Parade, attending the Section Leadership Training School and the National FFA Convention, participating in the Oregon VFW Veterans Day Ceremony, helping with Ag in the Classroom activities, and attending the Agriculture College Fair.

Each of these events and the many more the Oregon FFA Chapter participates in are helping to develop the future leaders of the agriculture industry.
