Office Careers Program Information Booklet Tarrant County College Community & Industry Education Northeast Campus

What is the Office Careers Program?

The Office Careers Program (OCP) is a series of self-directed courses designed to help individuals prepare for entry-level employment or to improve business and office technology skills. The program consists of a number of business and office technology courses. Course descriptions including prerequisites are listed at the end of this document.

When Can I Start?

You can start your class as early as one week after you visit with Community & Industry Education Services. Successful students attend a minimum of six hours per week, two days per week, but you may choose to attend more frequently if you like.

When is the Lab Open for Classes?

The classes meet Monday through Thursday at our instructional labs located on Northeast Campus in Hurst or at the Haltom City Northeast Center in Haltom City. Lab hours of operation are shown in the table below:

How Do I Learn in a Lab?

The program is designed for those students who can work on their own with occasional help. There is always an instructor in the classroom to orient students to the classes, assist the students with any questions or problems and to help keep students on track to completion. Each course has a specific set of objectives that students must master for course completion. Some courses have prerequisite skills or courses required.

Coursework is provided in the form of workbooks and hands-on projects students can work through on their own. The instructor will provide a syllabus of assignments and a general work schedule for each student. Students must complete all assignments and pass an exam before receiving a certificate for the course. This may be in the form of completed projects or an end-of-course exam.

Students may select individual courses in which they need to develop or sharpen skills, or we offer career certifications that designate courses necessary for a particular job function. Certifications do have specific requirements of students and are outlined in this booklet.

How Can the Office Careers Program Help Me?

It is difficult to get ahead without basic office and computer skills. This program is designed to help you acquire those skills. You can develop proficiency in the popular Microsoft Office Applications and many other areas including customer service and business communication. You will learn to apply those new skills to real office situations, learn when to use specific computer applications and improve your keyboarding speed and accuracy. In addition, you can earn specialized certificates in office related occupations.

You can also sharpen your business professional skills with courses such as Business Communication, Conflict Resolution and Customer Relations, or you may prepare to work in a medical office with courses like Computers in Health Care and Essentials of Medical Terminology.
