From the Vicarage......As the days grow shorter and we beginto feel a nip in the air we know Summeris almost over. It is the time when wehave opportunity to give special thanksfor all that we so often take for granted:the beauty of this world, the resourcesthat sustain us and for all those whoseefforts make it possible for us to havesuch an abundance and choice of food.Harvest festival, as we know it, hasevolved from the medieval celebration ofLammas, meaning ‘Loaf Mass’,celebrated at the beginning of theharvest season rather than at the end.Farmers made loaves of bread from thenew wheat crop and gave them to theirlocal church. They were then used asthe Communion bread during a specialservice thanking God for the harvest.Increasingly harvest has become a timewhen not only do we give thanks for theblessings we experience, but we alsoremember those who have relativelylittle to eat, often as a consequence ofextreme weather conditions and politicalunrest. At this year’s harvest festivalservice on 3rd October we haveopportunity to offer gifts of food to bedistributed locally and also to givefinancially to the Pakistan appeal. Also this year, we thought it would begood to link our harvest festival withanother medieval tradition known as‘beating the bounds’. In a time whenlocal maps often did not exist, knowledge of the parish boundaries wasimportant in resolving many and variousdisputes such as a parishioner’sobligations for maintenance of thechurch building or a villager’s right to beburied in a churchyard. The priest andparishioners would walk the boundariesbeating the boundary lines with greenboughs. Sometimes the boys wouldhave their heads bumped on theboundary stones to help them remember

the line of the boundary! By involvingchildren in the exercise, our medievalforebears aimed to ensure that details ofthe boundary line survived acrossgenerations. Gradually theseprocessions, usually in fact held in theSpring, became a time of praying forblessing on the parish and for theensuing harvest – a time which becameknown as rogationtide, coming from theLatin word rogare to ask.Somebody had the good idea that I maywish to walk the parish boundaryalthough reassuringly added that therewere no specific plans afoot to bump myhead at significant marker points! As inthe medieval tradition I hope I will not bealone, but that many in the parish will joinme in a fun day of walking in thisspectacularly beautiful part of the world. The plan is to walk the boundary in twohalves starting at Bathford Chapel andarriving at St Swithun’s Church for aharvest lunch at 1pm. In the afternoonwe will do the shorter part of the walkfinishing with tea in Bannerdown. Eachwalk, morning and afternoon, is dividedup into stages, so if you are reading thisbefore 2 October then please take this asyour personal invitation to join in any partof the walk, or to come for the harvestlunch or tea. All are warmly welcome tojoin in.With warmest greetingsJaneLight PartySt Swithun's ChurchSunday 31 October 2010Fun activities, music and goody bags inthe Church from 5.30pm to 7pm!
