Harvest is a time when we give thanksfor al l God’s gifts to us, traditional lygiving thanks for the harvest being safelygathered in. Living in Bathford we havemuch to give thanks for, in the beauty ofthe creation around us, as well as whatseems to have been an abundance ofcrops, harvested on the allotments and inour gardens. I t was my first year growingvegetables and I learned some lessons –netting might stop the birds getting thegooseberries and raspberries but itdoesn’t stop the squirrels! And if youignore your vegetable patch for too longit is soon over-run with weeds! However,I am delighted in my small successeswith tomatoes and beans, and those whogrow their own wil l know the satisfactionof eating your own produce.

Many in other parts of the world strugglemuch harder than we do as they battleharsh climates to grow meagre crops forthemselves and their l ivestock. For themgrowing their own is not a hobby but ameans of survival. I t is sobering when itis reported that 1 2 mil l ion are on thebrink of disaster in East Africa fol lowingyears of fai led harvests, droughts andrising food prices. As we give thanks forour abundance this year we want also tobe mindful of those without, and suchstatistics must challenge us about ourown stewardship of the world’sresources. At St Swithun’s, we wil l besupporting the long-term work ofTearfund, seeking to help people world-wide to move out of poverty, both in ourHarvest col lection and through profitsfrom the Harvest Supper.

Although the absolute level of need maybe different, there are famil ies in Bathstruggl ing to put food on the table. Forsome people on low incomes, a suddencrisis, redundancy, a delay in benefits or

even an unexpected bil l , can meangoing hungry. A Foodbank in Bath hasrecently been set up to support localpeople in crisis. Non-perishable food isdonated by the public to collection points- St Swithun’s wil l be one of these.Volunteers then pack the food intoemergency food boxes and front-l ineprofessionals such as doctors and socialworkers give Foodbank vouchers topeople in crisis. These vouchers arethen exchanged for three days of food ata Foodbank. The Foodbank's volunteersalso take time to l isten and point cl ientstowards further support. The GenesisTrust in James St West wil l be the basefor Bath’s Foodbank. This new initiativewil l be a valuable and welcome serviceto this area. Please feel free to drop offany contributions of non-perishable foodinto the collecting box in the church.

We are delighted that so manycommunity organisations are helping todecorate the church with their symbolsof thanksgiving this year. Do join us forHarvest Festival or just pop into thechurch to have a look on October 2nd or3rd.

With warmest greetings

Jane

Bathford Village Shop

A sad but necessary note. . .

Over the last few months the vil lageshop has been subject to several localincidents of theft and vandalism.Because of this, we have regretful lydecided we must increase our security. With advice from our local pol ice, we aretherefore instal l ing a CCTV camera.

We shall also be taking other measuresto protect both the shop and our veryvaluable volunteers. We shall also, incommon with the majority of retai lers, automatical ly pass on any incidence ofcrime to the police to deal with as theysee fit.

We are extremely sorry to have to godown this path, but as custodians of theshop on behalf of our members, we feelwe have no alternative. We hope you wil lunderstand and support us in this.

Thank you.

A message from the new Friends ofBathford School (FOBS) committee.

We, Becca Therrien (FOBS Chair) andEmma Horn (Vice Chair), have justpicked up the reins from Dena Barnesand Alison Beaven, who raised nearly£1 2,000 over the last couple of years forthe school. This funded many thingsincluding the children’s kitchen, ITequipment, new books, workshops, thepond, tyre park and school trips.Congratulations to Dena, Alison and allthose who helped last year.

What is FOBS all about?

We feel fortunate to be part of theBathford Primary School community. Ourchildren learn within a caring, friendly, bonding environment, which has anamazing family feel. Our children lovetheir school and are very proud of it. Wewould l ike to create fun events andsocial gatherings that parents, chi ldrenand others in the vil lage community canenjoy and of course raise money foressential equipment, books andresources for the school that benefitBathford children.

Besides our monthly sales of cakes andsecondhand uniform, we are planninglots of events for the coming year, including kids' and parents' fi lm nights, race evenings at Castle Combe, anAuction of Promises and the verypopular Christmas and Summer Fairs, toname but a few. .

How you can help?

I f you are involved in an event that couldraise money from sponsorship, have anyequipment, resources or ideas we cantap into we would love to hear from you.And we are also very interested in

forming l inks with local Bath businessesthat could benefit FOBS.

We are looking for parents and peoplefrom the vil lage with al l types ofexperience and talents, from creative tosport, musical to organisational and lotsmore.

Calling Bathford Dads

This year we are also very keen to getthe Bathford Dads on board. So, to al ldads out there, a big HELLO. Wethought perhaps you'd l ike to formMOBS (Men of Bathford School). Weknow many of you are keen on sport andgetting involved, so why don't you gettogether and make the first year ofMOBS one to remember.

There is a role for everyone who wantsto be involved and every bit helps. Soplease let us know if you'd l ike to beinvolved or help FOBS in some way, andcontact us through school or by email .
