A Latent Factor Analysis-Based Framework for High-Dimensional and Incomplete Data Representation Learning

One of most critical and important big data issues is how to deal with High-Dimensional and Incomplete (HDI) data from user-item interactions in recommender systems, user-user interactions in social network services, computational terminal interactions in telecommunication systems, and transaction interactions in financial systems. They are highly incomplete due to the exploding number of involved nodes and impossibility of observing their full interactions. Despite their extreme sparsity, they contain massive knowledge regarding various desired patterns like user potential preferences in recommender systems and fraud tendencies in financial systems. To extract such patterns, it becomes vital to perform appropriate representation learning to HDI data, which can be well achieved through latent factor analysis (LFA). This talk focuses on the origin, extension, challenges, progress, and future development of an LFA-based framework for HDI data representation learning. We hope that it would be highly enlightening for researchers and practitioners, especially young researchers and Ph.D. students in the important and rapidly evolving field of big data analytics.

Hui Lei

Crossing the Chasm of AI

We are witnessing a great awakening of AI, thanks to advances in computer hardware, breakthroughs in machine learning techniques, and the explosion of digital data. Although many enterprises are committed to using AI to deliver real business value, the adoption of AI for production use has been very slow and only a small portion of companies have revenue-generating AI systems running today. Surprisingly, difficulties in enterprise AI have little to do with core machine learning algorithms and techniques. Instead, they have a lot to do with the chasm between the machine learning prototypes in lab settings and large-scale production-grade AI systems. To adopt AI at scale and reap its full benefits, enterprises must solve problems in a wide variety of areas including infrastructure, data, insights, skills, trust, and operationalization. In this talk, I will discuss some challenges in the areas of application infrastructure and data infrastructure for production AI, and share our experience in tackling those challenges.

Backscatter Radio: A New Paradigm for Passive Communication and Green Internet-of-Things

Ambient backscatter (AmBack) has emerged as a promising technology for various communication and Internet of Things (IoT) applications due to the recent advances in the hardware implementation. In contrast to traditional wireless systems, no carrier generation and power supply are needed for AmBack, and the dedicated reader and round-trip path loss can be avoided compared to the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. In this talk, we begin with the fundamentals of AmBack, and then highlights several interesting topics in signal transmission schemes including frequency division multiple access (FDMA)-based interference free transmission, hybrid active and passive transmission, and opportunistic AmBack-assisted relay transmission.

Optimized Dragonfly Algorithm for Improving Transportation and Prediction Systems in Smart Cities

Optimization algorithms are essential for numerous optimization applications in smart cities, such as intelligent transportation and prediction systems. Swarm intelligence is a discipline that is utilized for solving optimization problems by producing low-cost, fast, and robust solutions. Its technique consists of making use of a number of agents, thereby forming a population in which individuals interact among themselves and with their environment, to give rise to a global intelligent behavior. The Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is a swarm intelligence algorithm that is inspired by the behavior of dragonflies in nature. It has been found to have a higher performance than some of the most popular evolutionary algorithms. However, it still has some limitations in terms of suitability in some application domains, effectiveness, and efficiency. This talk presents how the original dragonfly algorithm is optimized and adapted to make it suitable, effective, and efficient in several application domains in smart cities (e.g. Prediction and intelligent transportation systems).

The Way towards Ubiquitous Learning: a System Perspective

We are witnessing the emergence of ubiquitous learning, where each device (smartphones, wearables, IoTs, etc) can learn from their environments either alone or collaboratively. Such a new paradigm is fueled by deep learning techniques, or more specifically, on-device training. Given its popularity in the machine learning community, unfortunately, there are no systematic understandings of a critical question: how much cost does it take to train typical deep models on commodity end devices? In this talk, Dr. Mengwei Xu will share his recent thoughts and research efforts in this new field.
