2 Samuel 6-18

David: the foundational years–20-35

David: power and expansion–35-50

David’s “heart after God” 2 Samuel 6-10

• Relationship with God ...So David went there and brought the Ark of God...to the City of David with a great celebration. 2 Samuel 6:12

• Build a home for God “...Now I will make your name as famous as anyone...Furthermore, the Lord declares that he will make a house for you...” 2 Samuel 7:9,11

• A blessed life ...So the Lord made David victorious wherever he went...David reigned over all Israel and did what was just and right for all his people. 2 Samuel 8:6,15

• Grace and compassion for the marginalized One day David asked, "Is anyone in Saul's family still alive—anyone to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2 Samuel 9:1

David’s unprotected heart...“fatal flaw” 2 Samuel 11-18

• Lustful lifestyle and compromise for years "...be sure to select as king the man the Lord your God chooses...The king must not take many wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from the Lord...” Deuteronomy 17:15,17

• Unaccountability In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war...David stayed behind in Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 11:1

• Temptation Late one afternoon...David...walking on the roof of the palace...noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. He sent someone..."She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite." 2 Samuel 11:2-3

• Cover-up...pain When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Psalm 32:3-4

• Moment of truth So the Lord sent Nathan the prophet... 2 Samuel 12:1

Healing a broken heart

• Confession...the beauty of forgiveness Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say...But you desire honesty...Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:2-4,6-7

Finally, I confessed all my sins to you...And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Psalm 32:5

• Repentance...supernatural power for life Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me...Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Psalm 51:10,12

Fire prevention: confession and repentance

If you are playing with fire, stop and... Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts... 2 Timothy 2:22

Embrace accountability and... ...Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. 2 Timothy 2:22
