    From the Pastor

Our Vision:We hear our LORDs commandments -- calling us to be a city on a hill; reflecting light into Fountain Hills and all the worldbeyond, giving glory to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

    calls us to . . .

Our Mission :We respond in faith, hope, and love stretching upward to the One God and reaching outward to all people through worship, education, fellowship and service.

I am very excited to introduce the guest

facilitator for THE WAY starting on

    October 9th

. Id like you to hear him in

his own words so you can get to know

    him better...

My name is Ken Brown and Ive beena pastor for more than three decades. I

have been married to my wife, Margie, for longer than thatand we have two daughters and six grandchildren. We movedto Fountain Hills a year ago to get closer to our daughtersand their families: one lives in Flagstaff and the other in SanDiego.

In addition to being a pastor I have done corporate trainingand I served as the National Coordinator for the Veritas Fo-rum for three years, an outreach to major university cam-puses all across the U.S. Ive also written three books that

have been published and my claim to fame was an interviewI did on The OReilly Factor on the Fox News Channel, inaddition to dozens of other TV and radio interviews.

My personal mission statement is, I want to live my life tochange lives and my preaching mission statement is, I wantto demonstrate that the Bible is relevant to your life. Cur-rently, I am working on three books: a novel, a book entitledTruths that Grab Me and Wont Let Me Go, and a book I callByte-Sized Truth.

Plus, to stay active I have walked every single day for thelast four years and two months (a minimum of thirty minutes

a day) and I have donethree hikes in the GrandCanyon in the last tenyears, all the way to Phan-tom Ranch and back outagain in one day each ofthose times. Why did I do

it? Just as a personal chal-lenge and to stick my fin-ger in the eye of that noto-rious beast known as get-ting older.

Heres some of the territory you are going to explore:

Truths that Grab Meand Wont Let Me Go

People want God to be fair. I want God to treat me the

way I deserve to be treated, they might say. But remem-ber: be careful what you wish for.

"Selfhelp is nothing more than idolatry dressed up in arented tuxedo," one popular pastor argues. Selfmadepeople end up worshiping their maker. So, if theres adeadly sickness lurking there, whats the cure?

"The statistics on death are quite impressive, GeorgeBernard Shaw quipped. One out of one people die." Sothe question is, How do you and I come to grips with thegrim reaper?

Income for August approximated Budget, with some posi-tive factors offsetting negative ones. Year-to-Date Incomefor the Church shows we are still $15,972 ahead of Budget but we expect some of the favorable outcome to dissi-

pate as the year draws to a close. Expenses for Augustwere actually on target, as the unfavorable variance re-flected above is largely attributable to a timing difference.Vigilance is still the operative word forExpenses. In gen-eral, we are tracking favorably so far in calendar year2013.

    Alright, folks are coming into

place. All of the groups thatmake up our Music Ministry arein full swing, rehearsing, prepar-ing, engaging with each otherwith the love God has givenus. God has given us this oppor-tunity to put our heart and soulinto His love as one of Christs'people, with His spirit circulat-

ing through us helping usthrough the process. What a

nourishing experience! Often folks will come into re-hearsal fatigued, overworked, stressed by thoughts aboutcertain uncontrollable situations only to leave a rehearsalfeeling refreshed just by the experience of being to-gether. There are certain text, rhythms, intonation, andchallenges of a certain measure or two which can bring themind into a different realm of thought and meaning, pro-viding an outlook that can be so different than when a per-son walks in. I love to watch and experience humantransformation.

The Celebration Singers are so excited about singingthe Christmas portion of "The Messiah." I am,as well! The music is so magnificent. We began rehears-ing it the first evening of rehearsal. It is challenging, ex-citing, and definitely invigorating. If you have performedthis masterful work before and would like to join us, we

rehearse on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:00, andwould love to have you join in our music ministry. Weare certainly not be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but wewill love singing every note just as much as each one of

them do. We have fine and great quality voices, andour soloists are looking forward to singing their portion

before the congregation in the worship service on Dec.22..The Pearwood Recorders have also been

in rehearsal since September, meeting on Thurs-day's, at 4:00 p.m.. We have been together for approx.10 years, with a few of us there since the beginningunder the Direction of Barbara Wyman. It is such aninteresting group, with music that provokes time-less thought. We have asked Wendy Dachel to Directthe group. She has been playing with us for approx. 6yrs. playing the tenor recorder. She will also have thetime to hold extra rehearsals for any newcomersinterested in joining the group, so, if you are interested, please contact me and we will get you together.

It is good to be together again. We have so muchto gain from it.I look forward to every rehearsal, every challengingpassage of music, and could not ask for better peopleto work through them with.

    Peace,Deborah FisherDirector of Music Ministries

But I will sing of Your might; I will sing aloud of Your

steadfast love in the morning. For You have been a

fortress for me and a refuge for me in the day of mydistress.

    Psalm 59:16

John 3:16 is to the Bible what the sun is to our solar sys-tem. It reveals how much you and I are worth to God.Now, if thats true, doesnt that mean that our lives and

our sense of self-worth ought to revolve around the S-O-N?.

People hear us talk about salvation as a free gift andthey think, So youre saying, `Its cheap! But therewas a colossal price paid. So who paid that price andwhy?

Some folks grumble that, You can make the Bible sayanything you want it to say. However, you can do that

with a John Grisham novel too. But would you? So whatdoes that tell us about the Good Book?

Im convinced that there are two keys to emotionalhealth. Essentially, they are both Get out of Jail Freecards. But, if thats true, then who or what has you im-

    prisoned?

Looking forward to meeting you all at THE WAY!

    -Ken Brown

Life stops when you stop dreaming. Hope stops whenyou stop believing. Love ends when you stop caring, andfriendship ends when you stop sharing. These are wordsthat we should all try and live by. Here in Mission Ministrywe want to help keep people dreaming and believing, evenwhen things get so bad there does not seem to be a solution. We care enough to help and share what we have to keep thosedreams alive.

Heifer ProjectAs I have reported in our previous newsletter, we are

continuing our Heifer Project through Easter. But this monthI want to share with you the good news that we have had twoyoung people from our Vacation Bible School that have

brought me their piggy banks. We sent these banks homewith all the kids so they could continue to raise money forthis project. These two wonderful children have brought inapproximately $30.00. I am so proud of these two and am soexcited to see how our Vacation Bible School has impactedthe children, even after the excitement of the week has wornoff.

As the money is counted in the end, I will be sureand ask these two what their wishes for this money should gotowards. We will continue collecting any money you wish togive, make sure it is noted on the check or a note with themoney stating it is for the Heifer Project. But if you wish togive a specific gift in honor of someone or as a gift for some-one, you can do this also. Information is on the table in theNarthex, or you can ask Susan Owens or Terri Schmidt anyquestions you may have.

Extended Hands Food BankWe will be pushing for Breakfast cereals for Kids

this month. When we asked Pastor David Iverson of EHFBwhat was needed, he said they were exceptionally low oncereals. This means cold cereals as well as instant oatmeal. We will continue collecting other food, but we will just askyou to buy an extra box or two of cereal. We here at Foun-tain Hills Presbyterian Church are such giving people withsuch big hearts, Pastor Iverson has told me on several occa-sions how pleased he is with our church.

Dont forget the Friday night Jim Bobs Fish Fry.The cost has gone up this year to $11.99 each. All profits

go to the EHFB to help those people with needs other thanfood, this could be gift cards for electric or water or someother need. They also have a used clothing facility out bythe EHFB. This is called Maxs Closet, for those of youwishing to donate clothing. There are so many people herein Fountain Hills in need of so much.

Thank you to Nancy Wulfmeier, Vivian Virden,Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt for helping out at the FishFry on September 6, 2013. We have committed to helpingat the Fish Fry the first Fridays of the month. If this some-thing you might be interested in, you can contact Susan orTerri.

SWATTOur newly formed SWATT group is collecting

food to help those High School kids who need food. It hasbeen brought to our attention that many HS kids dont getbreakfast or lunch for various reasons. We have commit-ted to collect a few items for the School nurse to put into abag. They can come in and grab a bag with no questionsasked. We are collecting individual juice boxes or nonrefrigerated Chocolate milk boxes, breakfast bars (granolabars), individual bags of nuts, crackers with cheese or pea-nut butter, and fruit roll ups, as well as 8 oz. bottles of wa-ter. These things will give the kids some substance to getthem through their school day. There are several churchescollecting also, and we will take them to the school nurse.

Thank you in advance for helping us with this project.

Future ProjectsLast month we asked for volunteers to help make

Christmas stockings, we have decided we will buy thestockings and have people decorate them as they fill them.We will let you know more about this at a later date. These stockings are going to the children down at theChanging Lives Center, this is the sister center to thePhoenix Rescue Shelter.

We will be helping with Fort McDowell again thisyear as they buy Christmas presents for a less fortunatetribe. We did this last year and were able to help a tribe inNortheastern Arizona. Again I will let you know the de-

tails, as we get closer to Christmas. We will be doing an Angel tree again this year

also. This tree buys for kids here in Fountain Hills that areless fortunate and might not get a Christmas gift otherwise. When we get the information from the schools, we will besure and get the information to you all.

This pretty much tells you what we are up to inMissions. If this is something that you feel you would liketo get involved in, please contact Susan Owens or TerriSchmidt. Someone dear to me, recently quoted to me thisphrase that I think is so great, It is good to do the Lordswork, but better still to do his will. Thank you to all ofyou who so graciously give when we ask. May God con-

tinue to bless each of you.

A call to serveRuth M. Walsh wrote: I was naked, and

you questioned my lack of modesty in myappearance. I was imprisoned, and youdebated the legal aspects of interference. Iwas penniless, and you discussed tax-

deductible donations from your wealth. Iwas sick, and you thanked the Lord forthe blessings of your health. I was hungryand you a committee to study malnutri-tion. I was homeless, and you said Godslove was shelter under any condition. Iwas lonely, and you left me by myselfwhile you and your friends prayed. Youseem so holy and close to God, yet Imstill sick and alone and afraid!

By contrast, in the parable of the sheepand the goats, Jesus says, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least ofthese who are members of my family, youdid it to me (Matthew 25:40,NRSV).When we fail to serve our neighbors, wefail to serve Jesus. When we visit the sick, were actually visiting Jesus. And, whenwe love one another, were actually lovingJesus.

Gifts given to the Memorial Fund are used by the church for currentneeds or special items. Many times these donations are in lieu of flowersat a Memorial Service. The Foundation receives cash gifts at any time orbequests through wills or trusts at the time of death of the person wishing

to insure the future prosperity and continuation of the church.

Any member of the Foundation board can answer questions you mighthave about setting up your final documents and you are always welcometo attend any Foundation Board meetings.

Susan Phillips and Sally Atchinsondiscuss the differences between theFHPC Memorial Fund and the FHPCFoundation.

1 Corinthians 4:1Think of it this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of Gods mysteries.

1 Peter 4:10Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another

with whatever gift each of you has received.

We begin the new church year with anticipation for the growth of our congregation and our individual spiritualgrowth. We have people that make these blessings possible, members who call on prospective new members, mem-bers who assist in worship, music and lead Bible study. Members cook dinner for meetings, work with youth andchildren, maintain our campus and maintain the beautiful wreaths in the Worship Center. We also have memberswho visit the ill and call to say Happy Birthday or just to say hello.

We need your help! If you cant make a three year commitment to an elected position, we have other areas whereyou can help. Prayerfully consider what you can do and talk to an Elder, we will help you share your gift.

An Investment Todayfor the Life of Our Church

TomorrowThe Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church has two

different methods for contributing special gifts to theChurch, Memorials and the Foundation.

The Memorial Fund is a means of giving moneyto the Church in memory or honor of others and is usedin accordance with the specified wishes of the giver(s).Also, it may provide the means for individuals to give toa special activity or program. It is intended as a shortterm (two year) program.

The Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church Foun-

dation has been established to provide members andfriends a perfect charitable way to leave your mark andfinal testimony of your faith and value in our Church.Your gifts will help insure the future needs and ministriesof the Church for years to come. Gifts to the Foundationcan be restricted or designated for a special purpose(s) atyour discretion. It is a wonderful way to put your faithinto action and realize your visions for the future of theFoundation Hills Presbyterian Church.

The Foundation is an Arizona non-profit Corpo-ration which qualifies for tax exempt status under theprovisions of Internal Revenue Code 501(c)3. Welcoming Childreninto Worship and Mis-sion: an intentional inte-gration of all ages in thelife of our church

Modeling and teaching our kidsto worship is one of the mostimportant things parents havethe honor to do! As parents and grandparents, we de-sire to teach our kids how to ride a bike, play a sport, play a musical instrument, use a computer, drive a car.But teaching them how to love, serve and worship ourGod are some of the most important life lessons par-

ents and grandparents have to do, too!

I love the fact that we as a church are all on a journeyto intentionally partner with parents in the developmentof children into mature lovers and followers of Christ.Thank you congregation for showing the very attitudeof Jesus toward children! He included and valued chil-dren! How awesome to have an identity forming as achurch who wants to include children in the full life ofthe church.

Intentional intergenerational worship has the opportu-nity to integrate all our senses and ages into a creative

worship expression for the glory of God and the sakeof forming a whole people of God. It also is not easy!We are still experimenting and shaping this time.Thank you for being accepting of some noise andmovement whether from the Family Wiggle Area or thechildren engaging a worship activity at a table or a re-sponse station in the back. You must look at the GodSightings Boardto see what the Spirit of God is doingin their hearts!

Parents, we have resources to help you in modelingand teaching worship. And the kids will probablymodel and teach you, too. Enjoy the awe, wonder andsimplicity of a heart open and receptive to God!

Please know we love them to move to the music andthen return to you to worship withyou. We know chil-dren worship in full body and high definition! So, hereare some helps for creative worship for bothadults andchildren:

Children in Worship Info Card: The ABCs of chil-dren worshipping with you available.

    page 13 October 2013

Response Stations: Located on the side or towards thback of the Fellowship Center. These stations or activ

ties are various ways to respond to the message or Spiof God. These help both adults and children focus intetionally on God and respond to Him. This is not buswork for children, these are to guide hearts and mindinto a deeper awareness of and listening to what thSpirit of God is doing and saying. Then to live it.

Parents or Guardians: Please have your children) woship with you at your table and help them learn to woship with reverence, respect and joyful, full body expresion! Maybe they can teach you, too!

Congregation: Thank you for being accepting of som

noise and movement as we journey in worshipping afamily! When a child cries, remember Psalm 8:1-2 FGod has ordained the cries and noise of children anbabies as praise to Him! The praise silences the enmies of God. Yes, childrens praise establishes a stronghold and silences the foe and avenger! Wow! We walso value our more mature members in having childreserve you, share their energy with you and be respectfto your space and pace.

Worship Team and Support: We are continually praing and seeking ways to come together as a faith famito creatively worship with mixed generations. This

more than worship and education, it is spiritual formation!

I love being a part of a church family who takes serously the idea of the priesthood of allbelievers!

Treat 4 Treat!October 23rd our Youth will be filling bags with treatnotes and gifts to deliver to our shut-ins. Many of omature members have treated our children and teenin many ways. We want to Treat Them for Treating UsNo tricks! So, our elementary kids will be making cardand a small gift craft. Teens will bring in candy and iclude a note. These will be bagged and then personadelivered this evening. Imagine, a knock on the doand a young person holding out a gift bag of treats with hug saying...Treat for all the ways you have treated uso well at FHPC! Its our un-Halloween social. Teenwill then return to the YC for a special treat and sharinof their experience. As For Others

Our beliefs are best illustrated through our actions.Just saying, I believe something is a world apartfrom actually living out my beliefs with my actions. While teaching His disciples, Jesus confused themwhen He said, Just as you gave me food when Iwas hungry and visited Me when I was in prison, so

you have done the same for others. Knowing theyhad not done such things, His disciples asked,When did we do this?Jesus reply sets the example of how we are to livefor others. Just as you did things for others, it is asif you have done them for Me. His message can besummarized in two simple phrases: Love God.Love your neighbor. And, He said they werealike. In other words, you cannot do one without doing the other. So, just saying, I believe in human rights or justice for all or I am a Christian, is altogether different thanactually backing those beliefs with actions. Jesus message to His disciples, and to us, is that we need to walkthe talk. -Matthew 25:35-40

    Saving grace

Grace is the majesty, the freedom, the undeservedness the unexpect-

A childs prayer for protectionIf indeed childhood was ever carefree, its hardly so now. Some children face bullying while others deal with

rough home lives. Many fret over their performance at school and in sports. News of dangers and tragediesmakes parents want to shelter their kids from worldly harm.

Whether real or imagined, childhood anxieties are best confronted in the same way as adult anxieties: throughprayer and the assurance of Gods presence. Teach this traditional prayer to a young person in your life-and

    find comfort in it yourself:

God in heaven, hear my prayer.Keep me in thy loving care.Be my guide in all I do.Bless all those who love me too.Amen.

Gary & Barbara OakesonGary grew up on a farm with his two brothers near

St. Paul, Nebraska, attending a country school and a smallhigh school. After attending Nebraska Wesleyan Univ. fortwo years, he earned a B.S and M.S. degrees in ChemicalEngineering from the Univ. of Nebraska.

Barbara was born and raised in Charleston, WestVirginia, and enrolled at WVU to earn a degree in Phar-macy. She worked part-time as a pharmacist in independentretail pharmacies in W.Va. and Indiana, in addition to 6years on the staff of Wassaja Memorial Health Clinic atFort McDowell. She enjoyed helping patients improve theirhealth as well as being able to work part-time while raising

a family. And she liked being a pioneer in an occupationthat did not have many women at the time she began hertraining.

After graduation in 1959, Gary started his profes-sional career with Union Carbide in Charleston, WV.Within a week in Charleston, he met his future bride at aYoung Adult group at Barbaras home church. Then, shereturned to Morgantown, WV for her final school year.Married in 1961, they now have two sons, and four delight-ful grandchildren. They spend July in Idaho to have moretime with their son and two grandchildren there as well asbaby sitting regularly with the two younger ones in Chan-dler, AZ. Gary and Barbara moved to Elkhart, Indiana in1969 where they lived for 26 years before they got tired ofshoveling snow and came to Arizona.

Garys ten years at Union Carbide involved thedevelopment and production of polyethylene. Ten weeks

after marrying Barbara, a flash fire at a pilot plant put himin a hospital for eleven weeks! Twenty years were laterspent with Miles Labs in Elkhart, Indiana, primarily work-

ing with the coating process of One-A-Day vitamins, andthe production of citric acid from corn flour.

When they moved to Fountain Hills in 1995,they began attending several different churches in town, looking for a new church home. After worshiping atFHPC a short while, Barbara Wyman invited them to jointhe choir which they did and sang with the group for manyyears.

Gary has served as the Elder responsible forBuilding and Grounds at our church and is now the churchphotographer. He has worked on many Mission projects, particularly Church World Services annual Blankets Plusprogram. His main hobbies have been photography and

woodworking, the former now taking precedence.Barbara has held a number of offices in Presby-

terian Women including Moderator, Vice-Moderator, Bi-ble Study Coordinator, Evening Circle Co-Leader, andHistorian. She has enjoyed helping to establish our ChurchLibrary Resource Center and have a part of growing it toits current size and location. She went through the sameprocess in her Indiana church, but feels this time it turnedout better. Practice and experience do help! She was re-cently elected to serve on our churchs Foundation Board.

Locally Gary is involved with Senior Services wherehe delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. He also hasbeen quite active with Noon Kiwanis Club, having beenclub president and Lt. Governor. (Similar offices wereheld with Optimists Intl in Elkhart, In) . Gary and Barbaraboth belong to the Fountain Hills Walking Club and wereAmbassadors for the Fountain Hills Chamber of Com-merce. Besides enjoying music, they like to travel, havingvisited over 30 countries.

The most unique trip was with the People to Peo-ple organization, going to England and France to FollowEisenhowers Footsteps during the D-Day Invasion. Ourgroup was led by Mary Jean Eisenhower, and co-led byIkes son, retired General John Eisenhower. Among themany perks of traveling in such company was a visitwith Winston Churchill III and former Prime Minister SirEdward Heath in his home. We also received VIP treat-

    ment at various WWII museums.

Gods gracious giftsGod receives none but those who are forsaken, restores health to none but those who are sick, gives sight to none but the blind, and life to none but the dead. . . . He has mercy on none but the wretched and gives grace to none but those who are in disgrace.
