PEDIATRICSAwards and Honors

Dr. Eric Storch, an associate professor of clinical psychology in pediatrics and psychiatry, was recently awarded two prestige honors.

First, Dr. Storch was named one of the recipients of a 2010 Outstanding Research Award for his work in the field of childhood neuro-developmental conditions. He received this honor at a presentation hosted by the Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation, Dr. Karen A. Holbrook, during the first day of the USF Research Week.

Dr. Storch has also been named to the Guild Chair of Pediatric Health Outcomes which is jointly sponsored by the University of South Florida and All Children’s Hospital. With the endowed chair he hopes to, “continue to study ways to improve children’s outcomes (particularly those with autism, anxiety, OCD, and Tourette Syndrome) through the development, implantation, and dissemination of effective behavioral health interventions.”

On the weekend of September 24th, Dr. Angel Luciano was invited to participate at the Perinatal Research Society’s (PRS) annual conference in Avon, Colorado. The PRS is by invitation only and has strict requirements on who is eligible to become a member.

Dr. Luciano was presented with the NIH/NICHD Young

Investigator Award and spoke about some of his ongoing research.

Dr. Luciano was also awarded the NIH Loan Repayment Award. This is a competitive program that pays two years of student loans for physician scientists that spend at least 75% of their time conducting research.

Dr. Tiffany Chenneville, Ph.D. has received her first NIH grant

as a lead investigator, along with co-investigator Lynette Menezes,

Ph.D. The title of their proposal is “Enhancing NIH Supported

Health Research in Gujarat, India” and the amount is $54,200.

Congratulations to Dr. Chenneville and her team!

PEDIATRICSIn recognition of the substantial improvements the Bay Area

Early Steps Program has made over the last three years, the

team (pictured below) received an award at the Statewide

Early Steps Meeting in late September. Since 2007, the

program has moved from the Needs Intervention category to

the Meets Requirement category.

Pictured to the left are Early Steps Medical Director Dr.

Carol Lilly (background) and Early Steps Coordinator

Annalise Campisi (third from right) with the other statewide

awardees.

Congratulations to the USF Early Steps program!

Modell Kids’ Rays Day“I HAD A BALL AT THE FIRST ANNUAL TAMPA BAY KIDS DAY!”

Those were the feelings of parents and kids alike, as our young patients with Primary Immunodeficiency Disease enjoyed the day with their families at

the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Seattle Mariners game on September 26.

The crowd of 225 patients and family members got to spend some “fun time” with their doctors and staff, while enjoying a beautiful day at

Tropicana Field that included free tickets, food vouchers, hats, T-shirts and a fun-filled visit by the Ray’s mascot, Raymond.

Dr. John Sleasman, the Robert A. Good Professor and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology, was on hand to welcome the patients and their families, and spent the afternoon cheering

on the Rays with the kids.

The First Annual Tampa Bay Kids Day was sponsored by the Jeffery Modell Foundation, with support from All Children’s Hospital, Baxter, BioRx,

Biotest, CSL Behring, Futures and Options for Kids, Grifols, Octapharma, Talecris, and USF Health.

Update In Allergy and Immunology SymposiumOn Saturday, September 25, Primary Care Physicians, Pediatricians, Emergency Department Physicians,

Allergy/Immunology Specialists, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Residents, Students and other healthcare

practitioners gathered at the Westin Harbour Island to learn about the latest breakthroughs and recommendations

for the evaluation and management of asthma, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, vaccine indications & safety, chronic

rhinitis, and immunotherapy. The talks given at the Symposium consisted of:

Update on Vaccine Indications and Safety - Panida Sriaroon, MD

What is the Value of an ANA test? - Robert Nickeson, MD

Recurrent Infections: When is a work-up indicated? - John Sleasman, MD

Atopic Dermatitis: An Allergists’ Perspective - Morna Dorsey, MD

Chronic Rhinitis - Mandel Sher, MD

NIDA Grant

The Pediatric Allergy/Immunology Division was recently awarded a five-year, 5.5 million dollar grant for a

National Institute on Drug Abuse study. Dr. John Sleasman is the principal investigator at USF and Dr. Maureen

Goodenow is principal investigator at the University of Florida for this joint project entitled, “Systems Biology, HIV/

AIDS, and Substance Abuse (R01).” The proposed project focuses on neurocognitive impairment in HIV-1 infected

adolescents and uses systems biology approaches to identify new peripheral blood bioprofiles related to immunity

and marijuana use. The project is very significant because marijuana use has been reported to be highly prevalent

among HIV-infected youths, and systems biology approaches may reveal new paradigms that can advance

understanding of the relationships between cannabinoid use and HIV infection on neurocognitive function in

adolescents.
