TALK | Disney’s Nine Old Men: A Legacy for the AgesSat, Oct 24 | 11am & 3pm

The Nine Old Men—a group of early Disney animators—are credited with not only creating many of the most acclaimed Disney classics, but also refining the basic principles of animation. Disney Legend and animator Andreas Deja discusses the techniques and fundamentals that defined this distinguished group.

After the 3pm program, Andreas Deja will be available to sign copies of his new book, The Nine Old Men: Lessons, Techniques, and Inspiration from Disney’s Great Animators, which will be available for purchase on site. More details about this book signing will be provided to ticket holders closer to the event date.

TALK | Disney’s Nine Old Men: The Four Who Inspired the Nine | Sat, Nov 7 | 1pm

Animator and film director Eric Goldberg discusses the “Four Young Men”: Bill Tytla, Fred Moore, Ham Luske, and Norm Ferguson—a group of legendary animators who mentored the subsequently illustrious Nine Old Men.

TALK | Contemporary Character Animation and Classic Techniques with James Baxter Sat, Nov 14 | 1pm

Watch first-hand from animator James Baxter as he explains his classic approach to 2D Animation while creating an original animation from sketch to screen.

TALK | Disneyland’s Emissaries of GoodwillSat, Nov 21 | 1pm

Learn about Disneyland in the mid-1960s and how Walt originated the Disneyland Ambassador Program to assist him with media and public affairs requests during the Park’s 10th anniversary. Join Disney Legend Jack Lindquist and a panel of former Ambassadors for a discussion about this exciting time in Disneyland’s history.

Disney’s Nine Old Men: Stories from Their ChildrenSat, Dec 5 | 1pm

This two-hour presentation features a screening of the documentary short, “Growing Up with Nine Old Men,” directed by Ted Thomas, son of animator Frank Thomas. After the screening, Ted leads a discussion with other children of the Nine who provide insight into the lives of their famous fathers.

Learn character animation from DreamWorks animator James Baxter. Students currently studying animation at their college or university can practice with a true master. James shares his methods and demonstrates his approach to hand-drawn animation as students get a chance to apply these techniques to their own work.

Illustrator Claire Keane’s first children’s book, Once Upon a Cloud, is an enchanting ride following one little girl’s journey of finding a special gift for her mother. Using colorful chalk pastels, Keane created dreamlike scenes that range in color, texture, and technique. In this workshop, learn tips and tricks to illustrate using the magical (and a bit messy) medium of pastels. During the workshop, Keane will present her path from Visual Development Animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios to independent illustrator. Supplies are included.
