He calls us to “care for the common home…For we know that things can change.” That Pope is like a fresh wind, full of the Holy Spirit for Roman Catholics, Protestants, and non-believers alike. He reminds me of the story of the Syrophoenician woman in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew who also dared to speak up. She asked Jesus to heal her daughter of a demon. His initial reaction can be seen as racist/elitist, "Let the children first be fed, since it isn't good to take bread out of children's mouths and throw it to the dogs (reference to the woman and her daughter who were Greek and from a mixed race/marriage).” As audacious as she was, she persevered. “Sir, even the dogs under the table get to eat scraps dropped by children!" Then he said to her: "For that retort, be on your way, the demon has come out of your daughter." It dares to speak up. I see a pattern emerging, one that will transform us if we are willing to dare to follow Jesus, if we are willing to move beyond our comfort zones to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15). Let’s practice together this truth in love. See you in church. Many blessings, Lori

Welcome to Center Church where we roll up our sleeves to deepen our faith, extend God’s abundant love and justice, and where laughter and tears are sacred.

That Pope, that Pope dared to be truthful and humble amidst arrogance and greed. Pope Francis left Washington DC having turned it upside down…for a few days at least. It’s about time that we are awakened to seeking solutions to immigration and not turning the TV channel upon viewing the shock from the refugee camps. It’s about time to address those in poverty or what is considered extreme poverty (living on $2 a day). And it’s about time to face the fact that climate change is a problem, which can no longer be left to our future generations.

PROMISED LAND IS A BUSY PLACE!

We’ve had a wonderful start to the year in the Promised Land. We began with a toy-making workshop for 11-year-old Luke, a South Hadley boy who is being treated for leukemia in Boston Children’s Hospital. The children made a foosball table, puzzles, ball-in-cup toys, tops, pickup sticks, and beautiful cards. Some of the children know Luke from school, which made this outreach project even more special. We continue to keep Luke in our prayers! In another outreach project, we gathered with others from Center Church to pick up trash at Beachgrounds Park in South Hadley Falls as part of the Connecticut River Watershed Council’s “Source to Sea” river clean-up effort. It felt good to be a part of

keeping the Connecticut River valley beautiful!

On Sunday the 27th, Promised Land and Youth Group children prepared 50 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for children who eat at Kate’s Kitchen in Holyoke. The PB&J donation is a take-away snack or meal for hungry local children. This was an important activity in our unit on the miracle of the loaves and fishes, when Jesus fed 5,000 people using a small food donation made by a young boy. Through our sandwiches, we

participate in Christ’s ministry, in our small way, right here in our community. Our next unit will look at the friendship between Jesus and Zacchaeus the tax collector. Such an unlikely friendship – or so it seemed! But Jesus didn’t come to spend time just with the holy Joes – he came for everyone, saint, sinner, and in-between. He continues to call each and every

one of us by name. First Table We are so proud of Nolan Gage, Avery Haber, Samuel Pontes, and Alina and Klara Sokop, who are celebrating First Table on Sunday, October 4th! The children attended a preparatory class with Rev. Lori and Helen Gage to learn about our shared breaking of bread and pouring of wine on Communion Sundays, and to prepare for their special roles in the service. Well done, Nolan, Avery, Sam, Alina,

and Klara! We look forward to celebrating with you! Come Bead with Us! During coffee hour, we’re creating beautiful bracelets for Promised Land to sell at the Columbus Day Fair, for a to-be-determined charity. Please join us in this fun activity – all are very welcome! Kids’ CROP Walk Team The youth of Center Church have their own CROP Walk team this year – a shared donation envelope to simplify the process and, we hope, make it possible for more families to participate on October 18th. Please stop by the table at coffee hour to learn more, or send an inquiry to [email protected] . CROP Walk is a wonderful community event that brings us together with people from other South Hadley and Granby churches for a lovely fall stroll - and it really is an easy way to get food to those who need it. Dogs are welcome, too! Want to Keep Up with Promised Land? Would you like to receive the weekly Promised Land News via email? Drop us a line at [email protected] and we’ll add you to our email list. Send on your ideas, too. Would you like to volunteer in the Promised Land? We’d love to have you!

News from the Trustees for June 2015

It was decided that Trustees for the month will be: Carol White for October, Kiki Tipton for November and Eliot Chartrand for December. It was also decided that we would go back to acknowledging any memorial gifts in the CAC, a practice which has lapsed for a while. Thanks to Thia for agreeing to monitor and listing these gifts. Thia reminded us that at the end of August, we should be at 67% of the budget both for income and expenses. While our pledges are doing well because of several pledges being fully paid, our income is slightly under that %. And expenses are slightly above income but not at the 67%. Unfortunately we still have the difference between the amount actually needed to cover the projected budget for this year and the amount that was pledged. We are pleased to hear that the Center Nursery School has a waiting list for the first time in a while and their annual donation is assured for the 2015-16 year. We spent time on the upcoming congregational meeting of 9/20 and held a good discussion with Brian Lapis, our moderator. As a result of that, the information from the building study team and its recommendation, as well as the Council’s, and the seriousness of the north rose window situation, we voted to proceed with the north rose window work because of safety issues and the upcoming winter. We then discussed how to pay for this work in order not to go into a capital campaign now. We talked about various funding sources and agreed that the idea which made the best sense at present was to use the $50,000 (1/2 of the gift) from the Falls church and $2,000 from the Graham annual bequest. It was noted that neither of these votes was unanimous. At our continued meeting the following week, we spent the most time on the 2016 budget. A subcommittee had looked at the budget to see where we might be able to find some savings. The result of that discussion was available for the congregational meeting. In light of the difference between the pledge income and the overall budget for the current year, we reluctantly decreased the amount expected from pledges (and partly because of recent deaths and those moving from the area) - it would be lovely if the congregation could prove us wrong in this!. We also thanked the CE team for the substantial financial reduction which they worked out. As you remember, we are charged with coming up with a balanced budget by 2017. Update on the rose window work – the contractor assures us that there will be minimal disruption inside the sanctuary. There will be scaffolding by that north window while they work inside, which will be done first. The plan is to have the work completed before any serious winter weather. Eliot is also looking into various options for funding of the rest of the projected work (the south window, the small windows and the pointing of the bricks). We will be sure to keep everyone updated. Cindy Morrell, secretary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tuesday Club will be having an evening of making lovely Christmas Cards on October 27th at 7pm. Beautiful craft supplies, using Anna Griffin products, to make special cards at $1.50 each (to cover costs). Everything will be available, including embossing folders to make each card truly unique. All women of the Church – and friends – are invited. Speak to Karen Anderson (after church or 536-0005) to see sample cards and/or to let us know you will be attending. Coffee, tea and dessert will be served.

NOTES FROM CHURCH COUNCIL At the September meeting Lori gave us a preview of the busy fall season that is planned. Eliot Chartrand gave council an update concerning the rose window and restoration/building needs. This information will be given the congregation at the special church meeting on Sunday September 20th. A discussion was held relative to placing banners on our front lawn. These would be outreach to the public relative to inviting people to join us at Center Church. It was decided to go back to our teams and further discuss this. The following motions were made and unanimously approved for expenditures from Undesignated Memorial Funds.: Up to $275 designated to help pay the registration fee for church members to attend Super Saturday Up to $1200 to pay the registration to the youth retreat (in March- confirmation class

Ending Hunger One Step at a Time When: Sunday, October 18, 2015

Time: 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. Where: Granby Town Common - Rain or Shine

FACTS HAVE FACES There is enough food for all, yet hunger persists. One in seven people in the world go to bed hungry every night. Deep and persistent poverty is inherited by too many children perpetuating a cycle of hunger from one generation to the next. Poverty, war, disease, lack of access to safe water and land to grow food, climate change, and unjust trade practices are reasons why too many in our world don’t have enough to eat. As the causes of hunger around the world are varied, so too must be the solutions. The technology and expertise exists to eradicate hunger and end the hidden crisis of malnutrition. Focusing on early intervention for childhood nutrition and ending preventable childhood deaths is a vital first step. Improving access to safe water, planting affordable and drought resistant seeds are other ways to insure that food is always available. Teaching communities to grow nutritious food locally, supporting small-holder farmers and fair trade are all tools working toward a more just global food system. Church World Service and its partners on the ground are on the front line in the battle to fight hunger. While strides have been made in many areas to reduce hunger, there still exits large scale poverty and food insecurity. In the United States people who want to build a world with enough food for all participate in CROP Hunger Walks in over 2000 communities each year, raising $14 million to fight hunger in foodbanks and homeless shelters around the U.S. and globally. For more information on development initiative, water projects, refugee assistance, please go the Church World Service website at www.cwsglobal.org

Please put October 18th on your calendars. LET’S JOIN THE FIGHT TO END HUNGER.

THE MONTAGUES AND SOUTH HADLEY One recent Sunday after worship, the subject of the Montague family came up in conversation. After some research, here is what I discovered.

The Montagues came from a distinquished English family that traces back to the time of William the Conqueror. Richard Montague of Bourney, England emigrated to America around 1645 settling first in Wells, Maine. In 1646, he moved to Boston and then in 1651 to Wethersfield, Connecticut. After Wethersfield, he settled in Hadley in 1659 and died there in 1681. He was 57. Richard fathered five children. A son John was born in 1655. He married Hannah Smith in 1681. Hannah was the daughter of Chileab Smith who was an ancestor of Mary Lyon. John and Hannah had nine children. Their fourth child Peter would become one of the founding members of South Hadley. As early as 1719, Peter was acquiring and tilling land in Hadley’s south precinct, which by 1733 would become known as South Hadley. Peter was on a list of 117 names who were settling in South Hadley. In fact, he stood third in the amount of land that he possessed. Peter and Mary (Hubbard) had nine children. Peter was the first Montague to be buried in South Hadley in 1745. Their fifth child Moses gained the rank of captain during the Revolutionary War. Moses and Sarah (Graves) had 10 children.

Luke Montague, brother of Peter, introduced to South Hadley what was then called a “courting-stick.” This item was very useful on winter nights when a gentleman was “wooing” or courting his sweetheart and had to remain with the whole family around the only heat source in the home. Heeding the conventions of the day, they had to sit properly apart (about 5 feet) from each other. By using a courting-stick, which was a hollow tube about five feet long, the lovers could whisper their “wooing” conversations in relative privacy. Elijah Montague, the tenth child of Moses and Sarah Montague, was born in 1770. By the time Elijah was 67, he and his family had sold a moderately priced portion of their farm land to one Mary Lyon. Miss Lyon used the land to build the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary which opened its doors in 1837! The Montague family left a rich legacy here in South Hadley and elsewhere. They were among the first members of Center Church and held many church, village and later town governing positions. Some went on to hold legislative positions in our State government. The family also helped to raise the necessary funds to build and support Mary Lyon’s Seminary which later became what it is today-- Mount Holyoke College, the first college for women in the USA! Some of the family members went on to found the town of Montague here in Western Mass. Others of the family went further west and founded the town of Montague in Northern California near the Oregon border beneath the shadow of Mt Shasta. We, at Center Church, should be proud of our 282 years and the good that we as a worshipping family in Christ have brought to the welfare of our greater community! David Morrell, Center Church historian

Tell Me the Stories –October 2015 Here, Savior, in this Quiet Place (NCH 555) was specifically written for use in healing services by Fred Green in 1974. He was born in Liverpool, England and graduated from Didsbury College. He was ordained as a Methodist minister and held a variety of pastorates throughout England. Peter Cutts was asked to set the words to music by the NCH editors because they did not like the current setting for it. The tune “Chatham” is actually named for Chatham, MA even though Cutts was born and educated in England. He was serving as an organist in Watertown, MA when he composed it. Eventually he moved to MA and is on the faculty of Andover Newton Theological Seminary. Erik Routley had convinced him to begin writing hymn tunes. Interestingly enough, when I was looking back at the June hymn stories, Cutts had composed the tune for the first hymn I featured. There Was Jesus by the Water (NCH 545) is another hymn we sang in June and it is a relatively new one to us. It was written by Gracia Grindal in 1983 and it’s the story of a little girl’s healing by Jesus. Gracia studied at Augsburg College and Univ. Arkansas as well as taking one year in Oslo, Norway. She has written various hymn texts and translations, as well as the libretto for Dream of Shalom, a cantata. The hymn tune “Talitha Cumi” was composed by Howard Edwards, a student in her hymnwriting class at Luther Northwest Theological Seminary, in 1983. He is an ordained Lutheran pastor and earned a doctorate in creative ministry. He has also published a collection of original hymns. My Faith it is an Oaken Staff (NCH 418, PH 381) was just used this month and is the only one which appears in both of our hymnals for the month. Perhaps in this case, one would then think it is an older hymn, but I had no resource information except the NCH Companion. The text was composed by Thomas Lynch around 1855 and poses his thought that the staff represents the strength of faith through our life’s journey. He composed the text for his collection, The Rivulet. My source says that at least one gentleman believed that this collection and his theology was “negative and nondoctrinal.” The Swiss melody is anonymous, but called “The Staff of Faith” and in the NCH Companion, it does mention that it was used in The Pilgrim Hymnal. Apparently there are few Swiss melodies in our modern hymnals. The difference between the two hymnals, seems primarily to be the wording of the second stanza and some small changes to the third. The final hymn Children of God (NCH 533) takes its text from a section of John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem “Worship.” It was part of his commentary and Quaker views on the subject. Whitter was born here in MA, wrote poetry as a teenager, and was friends with and a supporter of the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Whittier was not technically a hymnwriter but there are at least 75 “cantos” from his poems in various hymnals. Alfred Scott-Gatty composed the tune “Welwyn” in 1902, naming it after a model suburb near London, England. Gatty wrote many songs for children which his mother published. Interestingly he founded the Magpie Madrigal Society in 1886. His other passion was heraldry! Cindy Morrell, Associate in Music Resource used: The New Century Hymnal Companion, ed. Kristin Forman (1998)

Did you know that kids involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters receive better grades in school and are less likely to use drugs and alcohol? You can be that change in a child’s life by signing up to be a mentor with CHD’s Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County. Mentoring is fun, easy, and makes a big difference to a child in our community. Learn more by calling (413) 259-3345 or email [email protected].
