Membership LongevityDid you know that we still have two long term members who are paying their dues despite the fact that they don’t live in the local area? Jerry Rasmussen and Van Youngquist are committed Rotarians who want to remain members of our Club. There is a lot we can learn from members with their longevity in Rotary. This is the first in a two-part series about Membership Longevity. Jerry and Dolores Rasmussen moved to the Madras, OR area some years ago to be nearer to son, Jeff. Their hearts still belong to Rotary and to Cowlitz County. Here are some of Jerry’s thoughts which can help us all be better Rotarians and honor Jerry’s long service to our Club. Jerry joined Longview Rotary in July of 1967. “Herb Hadley was my sponsor. We had a strong connection because Herb had hired me into the insurance business. I decided to join because Longview was good to me and I wanted to give back in some way.” What were your expectations about Rotary? “To become involved in something other than my work. The Rotary Country Store was the big project at that time. It brought the all-male membership and the RotaryAnns together.” (Note from Pat: Rotary began as an all-male Club. Pretty soon “the guys” realized they needed some help with projects. The wives of Rotarians were known as Rotary Anns – all around the world that term was used. It was much later that women were actually admitted as members, but that is another story.)

“Rotary membership is a great way to make friends when you are working together on projects which benefit others. It is important to get all members involved in Club projects but beware of burning them out with too many projects.” “I enjoyed working on committees wherever needed and I also served as a past board member.” What inspired members such as you and Van to continue your membership in this Rotary Club even after you had left the area? “We were inspired to continue our membership because that is what Rotary is all about. Not only in the Longview Kelso area, but worldwide. How awesome is that? “ “My advice to new members: Rotary is a great place to meet new friends, give of yourself - it works. The fellowships last forever. I truly feel, the world is a better place because of Rotary. Keep up the good work that you do. It’s important.” Dolores & I miss Longview and Rotary. We are planning on moving back to the area. Hope it comes together.

Jerry & Dolores Rasmussen

ROTARY WORLD POLIO DAY – OCT. 24Have you made your Rotary pledge to end polio? Your gift protects vulnerable children from a paralyzing disease. Because of you, we are one step closer to a polio-free world. Since 1988, worldwide polio cases have dropped 99.9 percent. But we still have plenty of work to do. Polio remains endemic in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria, and as long as one child is at risk, all children are. This is why Rotary is committed to seeing this effort through to the very end. Your support brings critical resources to vaccination and monitoring efforts in areas where children are especially vulnerable to polio. It gives children a future in which they can run and play. Thank you for joining us in the largest and most ambitious global public health program in history. Thank you for making Rotary’s mission a part of your own.

Congratulations to Longview’s Early Edition Rotary Club on their 40th Running of the Harvest Classic to benefit Help Food Warehouse! Each year this race grows in number of participants and is a steady contributor to the HELP Food Warehouse. Each year, Early Edition Rotary adds new features to keep folks returning year after year and to entice new participants to join in. Congratulations to our Noon Club members who participated:
