A Golden History Meets a Brilliant Future

Every night before I go to bed, I brush my teeth, give the dogs one last chance outside, check tomorrows schedule and plan what Ill wear. Who among us doesnt have habits that end our day? This fundamental human ritual is powerfully mirrored in Jewish life: the reality and the need to have spe-cial time, and special opportunities, to mark the passage of time, but more importantly, to imbue what time we are given with meaning.

When we end Shabbat with Havdalah, we yearn for the messianic age

when we imagine every day being a Shab-bat, full of peace, reverence for God and love of community. When we end our yearly reading of Torah, Simchat Torah offers us the chance to show our eternal love for the sacred words of our tradition. Even as we dance around with scrolls in hand, we know just as weve concluded the last words of Deuteronomy that its immediately back to Genesis, once again in search of spiritual meaning, comfort and enlightenment.

Having passed through the sacred gates, of the Days of Awe, weve looked

back on a year that was; now we look forward to the year that will be. May this Jewish circle of life instill in us the strength, desire and will to hold fast to promises made to God and to those in our community we know and love, and to know that in the coming year, even when we drop the ball, God is there for us to give us a second chancefor truly, in ev-ery ending there exists a new beginning.

Every night at camp, our campers have a special activity designed by their counselors to develop bonding and unity. One of the most time-honored and effective activities is the trust walk. Campers line up, put on blindfolds and place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them. They are then led on an adventure through camp. They maneuver around obstacles, over hills and down paths, kept safe by their counselors. The campers have no idea where

theyre going or how theyll get there. What they do know is that their adventure will be worth their while, often ending in a special treat of ice cream or a healthy alterna-

tivebut in order to succeed, they must trust their leaders, each other and themselves.

This month, were introduced to a 5,000-year-old trust walk, the first of our people. Abram is told by God to leave his homeland and go to a land

that God will show him. Abram gathers his family and his belongings and goes, having absolutely no clue where he is going. What he does know is that he will be rewardedmay-be not with ice cream, but with a great nation, a great name and a blessing. With trust in God, his family and himself, he travels over hills and through the wilderness, overcoming obstacles and finally making it to the Promised Land.

As we have entered into our new year, we too are on a trust walk of sorts. Where will our lives take us this year? What obstacles will we have to overcome? What hills must we climb? What paths will we follow? Perhaps only God knows the answers. What we do know is that with trust in God, our families, our friends and ourselves, we too can make it to our own Promised Land.

This imperative from Torah is one we follow through many acts of tikkun olam, and may be most powerfully under-stood through our newest initiative, community organizing. In addition to all the great tzedakah we do (food pantries, relief for Darfur and the High Holy Days Tikkun Olam Project, among many others), we can improve the quality of life in our city through deeper, more sustainable meansjoining together in one large voice so elected officials will heed our call to create positive change in Los Angeles.

Last July, we hosted 800 citizens who met with about half of the Los Angeles City Council as well as members and repre-sentatives from LAUSD and the County Board of Supervisors. We were able to cut through the static and get them to commit to expanding a math curriculum (the Algebra Project) that has been proven to have dramatic results for high school students; an expansion of a successful pilot program in the Valley in which banks, mortgage institutions and homeowners cooperate to reduce foreclosures and bankruptcies; and a commitment to

readdress the deepening needs of citizens to access job-training programs that give a leg up on acquiring work that pays well and is long-lasting.

Continue this great journey with us as we turn the page in the New Year by joining forces with LA Voice (www.lavoicepico.org), a community-organizing group with nationwide roots and

a long track record of success. This is THE program to participate in if you want to change the course of our citys direction, make your voice heard and uphold Jewish ideals in the process. We need YOU!

DO NOT Stand Idly By!

Retire? Who Me?After making it as teachers and doctors, lawyers and archi-tects, rabbis and engineers, what will we women do when retirement looks us in the face? What does it mean to leave our business cards behind? How does it feel to take yoga during the day and see a play on a weekday evening?

This is the first generation in history in which large numbers of professional, working women are facing retirement in the next five to fifteen years. What does it mean to leave work, with its social and financial rewards? How does a queen of multitasking take a break? How will women reshape their lives, their relationships and their sense of self ?

Bernice Bratter and Helen Dennis, authors of the chal-lenging book Project Renewment: The First Retirement Model for Career Women, will lead a workshop at the Irmas Campus, available to the first twenty women who register. They have guided more than 10,0000 people through this process. Their workshop encourages optimism and opportunity, growth and discovery, courage and faith, openness and good humor!

Join me as I enroll in this series to consider the next stage of life!

We at the Center for Learning and Engagement have a wonderful team of personalities who have been work-ing together to create a special environment for the children of Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Each of us brings a high level of talent and experience from the world of Jewish education. We have been working tirelessly to develop new and exciting programming for our students from kindergarten through high school. The dedication of our team can only be matched by our desire to teach our children to be inspired by everything Judaism has to offer.

On September 1, our thirty-eight nursery school teachers came back to school. After a long summer vacation, the staff from both the Mann Family Nursery School and the Erika J. Glazer Nursery School assembled for a full week of teacher in-service training. Carol Bovill, Director of the Early Childhood Centers, conducted numerous workshops on the three pedagog-ic philosophies that we practice in our schools. In addition, the staff was treated to an exciting afternoon with Roleen Heimann, Director of New School West, a Reggio Emiliainspired school located in West Los Angeles. As a result of learning with these two educators, our teachers have created a warm, cozy, comfort-able atmosphere in all of our classroomstruly a home away from home.

As another impor-tant part of our teacher in-service, the teach-ers and staff members became certified in CPR and first aid. Even

though we were covering a very serious topic, sitting on the floor practicing on mannequins and on each other was a fun, team-building, bonding experience. Thirty whooshes, two pushesthirty whooshes, two pushes!

This year, camp alumni are invited to help outto roll up their sleeves for a day of fun thats full of purpose.

Join us at Camp Hess Kramer on Sunday, October 18, for our first Avodah Day. Bring a picnic lunch, grab a paintbrush or a shovel, and help refresh our facilities and grounds in prepara-tion for the summer of 2010!

During the recent High Holy Days services, while reflecting on Rabbi Leders words about where we come from, we had an opportunity to see our future. A small slice of the ornate-ly finished surfaces in the sanctuary on the west wall underneath the stained glass lunette has been restored by EverGreene Archi-tectural Arts. The company is an award-winning conservation and restoration firm that specializes in architectural finishes such as paint, plaster, molding, stone, metal and murals.

EverGreenes craftsmanship can be seen in some of the nations most treasured architectural monuments. The firm was recently featured in the New York Times for its restoration of the murals in the lobby of Rockefeller Plaza (known as 30 Rock), and is also responsible for the amazing work at the El-dridge Street Synagogue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The restoration process begins with analysis and investi-gation that combines the sleuthing skills of Sherlock Holmes with the chemistry skills of Marie Curie. Small chips of paint, plaster and other materials are subjected to chemical analyses to determine their composition and what kinds of pigments were originally used to produce the hues and colors. EverGreene also determines how the finishes were applied and with what kinds of materials. Cleaning techniques are evaluated and treatment recommendations are developed.

At 80 years old, our sanctuary is showing its age. Exterior and interior paint is flaking and some historic decorations have been painted over. The gold leaf is tarnished to a dull a ver-sion of its former glittering brilliance. The cast stone is stained

and dirty, and accent glazes are degraded. The plaster in the coffered ceiling has suffered from leaks, causing a fine dusting of powdery efflorescence that resembles fallen snow. Various treatments will recast plaster elements that are loose and other-wise clean and retool surfaces.

The large columns in the sanctuary are actually made of a gypsum-based material known as scagliola, which is often mis-taken for marble. Scagliola was widely used in neoclassical civic and religious structures, particularly state capitols, courthouses and cathedrals. The columns will be cleaned, repainted and polished, and minor cracks will be repaired.

The Warner Murals, painted by Hugo Ballin, are lifting from their frames and need cleaning. A preview of what lies in store can be seen at the Griffith Park Observatory. In 1934, five years after completing the sanctuary murals, Ballin painted a mural diorama depicting mythological deities relating to the heavens. The observatory murals were recently restored as part of a comprehensive redevelopment and restoration project overseen by architect Brenda Levin, who is directing the proj-ect at our Temple and who will guide the process and develop-ment of all the final finish selections.

It will take some time to accomplish such a detailed and large-scale job, but our future is certainly looking bright!

Gina LobacoDevelopment Director

The Ballin Murals are painstakingly cleaned. The gilded finish of the archway is cleaned and refinished, showing original luster.

Eight decades of grime are cleaned from the cast stone of the foyer stairwells.
