In our world today, there exists a constant search for wealth and wisdom. Our American society, capitalist in nature, requires individuals to strive for material gain and the power that comes with it. Notwithstanding, other cultures inevitably emphasize the same ingredients even though they are governed by other societal forms e.g. socialism, communism, tribalism, etc. This worldly view stands in juxtaposition to the Divine which is reflected in the Kingdom of God – the way of life intended for mankind. It is not surprising, then, that Christians find the modern road of life difficult to follow. Today’s Liturgy of Word is intended to assist us in travelling the road that Christ followed. A road contrary to the way of the world. A road embedded with sacrifice but leading to eternal joy. Today, we are called to listen attentively to the Word so that our journey to the Kingdom can be successful.

In the first reading from the Book of Wisdom, the sole ingredient needed for the journey to the Kingdom of the God is revealed. We are told that the traveler on the road of life should acquire Wisdom. This “Wisdom” is not intelligence; rather, it is the personal involvement of God through the Holy Spirit. This involvement is better than gold or gems which are just material things that decay. It is this Divine Presence that does not decay but strengthens the traveler and imparts the ability to see things in proper perspective. Without this Divine Guidance, the traveler constantly seeks happiness which is constantly elusive. Without our Spiritual Soul Mate, the Holy Spirit, we are left alone and isolated. Life become unbearable and disheartening as there exists an “emptiness” within our beings.

The very short reading today from the Letter to the Hebrews succinctly expresses this same need for the Divine Presence in our life. Here, the Word is revealed

as omnipresent and omniscient – know-ing our thoughts and desires. The early Christian is reminded that all our actions are “…naked and exposed” and requires an accountability on our part. Christians are constantly urged to guide their actions in accordance to the Word they heard. Only through this method will the Kingdom of God be realized through them.

Finally, today’s Gospel by Mark reveals how difficult it is for those who wish to be followers of the Lord. In the Gospel, Jesus is approached by a man who wishes

to know what he has to do to have eternal life. Christ tells him to obey the commandments. The inquirer says that he has done this. Then, Christ adds that there is only one thing the man lacks – Agape love. The Messiah tells him to sell all that he has and follow him. This the man cannot or is not willing to do; so, he abandons Jesus and walks away sad.

This event causes distress for his disciples. They begin to wonder how anyone can be saved. It is at this point that Christ teaches his disciples that man, on his own, cannot be saved; rather, only through the Divine is it possible. The Lord, then, reminds his followers that anyone who makes sacrifices will be repaid by God “…a hundred times more…” in the Kingdom to come.

Holy Mother the Church calls her children to this same road of discipleship. She reminds us that to follow Christ means to sacrifice and to place our lives into His hands. She admonishes us not to abandon Christ as the man in the Gospel does; rather, we are to embrace him and our cross as we journey. Only through the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit and the joining of our lives with Christ can the Kingdom of God come to fruition. It is up to us to place our will in the Hands of the Father so that Wisdom can fill the earth, again. It is our witness that reveals the Word to others and it’s our responsibility to reveal God’s love for all.

SAINT OF THE WEEK:

St Teresa of Avila October 15th

St Teresa, a Doctor of the

Church, lived in 16th century

Spain, an age of exploration,

reform and upheaval.

She was a contemplative

Carmelite nun who was very

human, outgoing, adaptable,

courageous and enthusiastic.

She was wise, yet practical, a

mystic yet an energetic reformer.

Her heart belonged to God despite an arduous lifelong

struggle filled with purification and suffering. She

founded six monasteries, traveled, wrote and fought

always to renew and reform the Church. Her writings of

"A Way of Perfection " and "The Interior Castle" have

helped generations of believers. She is a great interces-

sor for those who desire renewal and growth in faith.

approach to life issues.

We are inviting local parishes to attend this event on:

Friday, October 26th from 7-9 pm

In the Milam Auditorium (Room 026) on the OSU Campus.
