BY THE WAY . . . • The Diocesan Ministries Appeal is a genuine lifeline to many people and that is why every gift matters! Your support helps bring to life that work of our Catholic Charities agencies each year. It also supports seminarian education, our diocesan priests’ residence, extraordinary healthcare needs of our priests and urban elementary education. In addition, parishes receive half of all funds received over their parish goals, with $900,000 returned last year to parishes – and over $3.65 million in five years! Please help people in need and our own parish by making a gift today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2021appeal.org. • In two weeks we celebrate the Church’s annual harvest festival of All Saints Day – All Souls Day. It gets a little complicated this year. Because it falls on a Monday, All Saints Day is not a holyday of obligation this year. There will be the usual 7:30 A.M. Mass on Monday morning. However, to emphasize the celebration of this solemnity, we will have our monthly Eucharistic Holy Hour on Monday night, November 1, at 7:30 P.M. with the Litany of the Saints, and prayers for all the faithful departed.

On All Souls Day, Tuesday, November 2, Mass will be celebrated for all the faithful departed at 7:30 A.M., and again, at 7:00 P.M. The families of those who have been buried from Saint Anthony’s in the past year have all received an invitation to that Mass, but it is open to all. During the two-day celebration a candle will burn at the Baptismal Font for each of our parishioners who have died in the past year. At the end of the Evening Mass on All Souls Day, the families will be free to take their loved one’s candle home with them.

There is a Plenary Indulgence attached to visiting a cemetery on All Souls Day and praying for the souls of the faithful departed. Because we have no cemetery at Saint Anthony’s, at the end of the 7:30 A.M. Mass we will process to our Prayer Garden and bless the pavers which commemorate so many of our parish’s deceased members, and pray the indulgence prayers there.

The All Souls Day Masses will begin a Novena for the Faithful Departed – nine days during which all the Masses at Saint Anthony’s will be offered for the happy repose of the faithful departed. To have your loved ones included in this Novena, simply take the designated All Souls Day envelope in your envelope packet (or take one from the doors of the church) and write the names if your loved ones on it and drop it in any collection basket. The names will remain on the altar throughout the month of November. • This afternoon at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Paterson, Bishop Sweeney will distributed the 2021 Vivere Christus Awards – one to a parishioner from each of the 109 parishes in the diocese. Our recipient this year is Victor Tamburro, a lifelong member of Saint Anthony’s, who has served the parish in a variety of capacities over the years, including Youth Minister, Usher, Member of the 500 Club, Knight of Columbus, zeppole artisan, and active member of the Hawthorne Fire Department. Congratulations, Victor! • Covid 19 Restrictions – While many of the Covid 19 restrictions and advisories have been lifted, some are still in place. Masks are still required in church for all those who have not been vaccinated. This includes both weddings and funerals. The Bishop and other Church authorities have encouraged everyone to receive Holy Communion in the hand. This is for the protection not only of the broader congregation, but also of the priests, deacons and Communion ministers. If a communicant has a scruple about this, we ask that they wait to the end of the line to receive Holy Communion, so that additional sanitation may take place.

6

• For the past ten months Saint Anthony’s School has had the privilege of hosting Sister Maria Nguyen thi Long Phuong, F.M.A. as part of our community. A member of the Salesian Sisters Vietnam Province, Sister Maria has been with us in a double capacity of improving her English skills, and getting all her legal documents in order for her new assignment at Mary Help of Christians, a multi-faceted center at Negombo, Sri Lanka. Negombo is a city about the size of Paterson on the west coast of Sri Lanka about forty miles from Colombo, the capital. Unlike most of the country, Negombo is 65% Catholic dating from a strong Portuguese colonial evangelization effort. This past Tuesday Sister will began flying from Newark to Chicago; then Chicago to Qatar on the Arabian Peninsula; and then back again from Qatar to Colombo, Sri Lanka. By the time you read this, Sister may have arrived at her destination! We wish Sister Maria many blessings in her new mission, and thank her for her presence, especially among our younger children. • This weekend our seventh-grade altar server, Evan Pidane will be selling key chains after all the Masses. Evan has fashioned the key chains himself over the Summer, and is selling them to raise funds to donate to our parish food pantry. Evan, and his brother Justin, have faithfully served 7:00 A.M. Mass each Sunday right through the Pandemic, and Evan is also one of the live-streamers who helps bring our daily Mass to our homebound parishioners. What else can I say; you know you need one of these key chains! • Please remember in your prayers Mrs. Sally Glynn, the mother of Father Martin Glynn, who died on September 29 in Ireland. Father Martin’s address is Saint Mary’s Church, 15 Myers Ave., Denville, NJ 07834. • Monday is the Feast of Saint Luke, the Evangelist. We have a window dedicated to Saint Luke on the rectory side of the church. A companion of Saint Paul, Luke is generally credited with the authorship of two New Testament books, namely the Gospel of Luke, and the Acts of the Apostles. A physician by profession, Saint Luke is venerated as the patron saint of all those in the medical profession. During the time of the pandemic, many people have had signs outside their homes and businesses showing support for those in the health care profession who have been stretched so thin during this difficult time. Perhaps, more than a sign, we can offer a prayer for them on the feast of their heavenly patron. Lord Jesus, our brother, you showed your love for the sick by your concern for them. Help us to see you and serve you in the sick. Bless the men and women who are dedicated to helping and healing the sick. Guide them in their labors, and give them a greater share in your love. Reward their service by the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit, and by the everlasting happiness of heaven. Lord Jesus, we praise you, for you are our Lord for ever and ever. Amen. God bless you all, Father Ray

"NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY"

This annual event will be held this year on Satur-day, October 23. It's a nation-wide day of commu-nity service, a day aimed at making a difference, big or small, in the lives of others. On that day our Social Services Ministry will conduct a coat drive to benefit His Helping Hands, a non-profit Paterson-based agency assisting the homeless and others in need. As the winter months approach, we welcome your donation of gently used and clean winter coats & jackets (all standard sizes) for men, women, teens, and children, as well as blankets, afghans, comforters, quilts, and flannel sheets. (And feel free to donate new items if you'd like.) We will also be accepting personal-size toiletries/hygiene items. UPDATE: We will also be accepting sleep-ing bags and warm winter socks (new winter socks only, please) Please bring your donations to the rec-tory garage, behind the church, on Saturday morn-ing, October 23, between the hours of 9:30 and 11:00. Thank you for your consideration.

We continue to collect food and baby product coupons to benefit the clients of the Lighthouse Pregnancy Re-source Center here in town. Please clip the coupons, put them in a sealed envelope marked "Social Services Coupons," and place the envelope in the basket on the right in the front (main) vestibule of the church. No outdated/expired coupons, please. Thank you for your help.

Now that Fall is here, our attention turns to the up-coming holidays. Our Ministry will this year hold its annual Thanksgiving outreach in late Novem-ber, providing as in past years food baskets and turkeys to our clients. We will also once again set up our annual Advent Giving Tree, providing holi-day gifts to the many families and agencies we serve through this effort. Details as to how you can help will be given in future bulletins. Stay tuned!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

St. Anthony's Rosary Makers are a group of women

"Bringing people closer to Jesus through Mary,

one rosary at a time."

The group was formed in March 2006 with the mis-sion of making rosaries for those who need them. It

Communion children, military personnel, the needy, the homeless, and anyone who would like to have a rosary.

We are funded by donations that are used to pay for the supplies to make the rosaries as well as cover

the cost to ship them to locations all around the world, If you are interested in joining our group, We meet in Thursday morning between 10am-12noon in the rectory meeting room. Call the rec-

Be the Key to Change Project

We Are Back! My name is Evan Pidane and I am a 7th

grader at St. Anthony School. As some of you may

remember, due to the pandemic last year, I was forced

to think of a new plan to further my desire to help fam-

ilies in need. I, therefore, created a project called “Be

the Key to Change” and am fortunate enough to be

able to run this project again this year. After the

masses on Sunday, October 17th, I will be selling

keychains for $4.00 each (until I sell out) to raise mon-

ey for St. Anthony’s food pantry and holiday food

drives. This summer I worked very hard making the

keychains, even doubling the amount I made last year

and adding a charm to them. These keychains are all

handmade by me and consist of a strong paracord

braid with a carabiner and a handmade cross charm on

one end with a key ring on the other. They can hold

your keys and easily hook onto a bag or belt loop so

you know where they are. The holidays are always a

time of need for many local families and I appreciate

any support you can give to my campaign. Last year,

so many parishioners shared their “Time, Talents, and

Treasures,” with us to help with this cause and I am

confident that with your help, we can continue to “Be

the Key to Change!” Thank you for your support!

“IT'S NOT HOW MUCH WE GIVE BUT

HOW MUCH LOVE WE PUT INTO

GIVING.”

(ST. MOTHER TERESA)

Thank You Pidane Family

Once again the Pidane family has shown us all how to help those less fortunate by using our “Time, Talent and Treasure”!

Evan ran a drink stand and shopped with his family for needed pantry items with the proceeds he earned. We are so grateful and thankful for their continued generosity to those less fortunate. We are so grateful for their continued generosity to those less fortunate.
