DALLAS, Texas – Rodney Davis-Gilbert, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) was presented with the Franklin H. Williams award on September 20 during a ceremony at the Peace Corps Headquarters in Washington D.C. The award honors ethnically diverse returned volunteers who exemplify a commitment to community service and Peace Corps’ third goal of promoting a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. Award recipients were selected from each of the nine Peace Corps Regional Recruitment Offices nationwide. Davis-Gilbert represented the Southwest Regional Office.

Davis-Gilbert served as an education Volunteer for the Island of Pohnpei in Micronesia from 1989–1991. Davis-Gilbert continues to fulfill Peace Corps’ third goal through her partnership with World Wise Schools and the Dealey Middle School International Academy. In addition, she recently completed a Peace Corps documentary which is archived in the John F. Kennedy Museum at Dealey Plaza. She is a trained World Affairs Council liaison and Model UN coordinator for her campus.

She is the wife of Lamar Kimble Gilbert, and proud mother of three beautiful daughters, Alexandria – age 15, Victoria – age 13, and Elizabeth – age 11. All of her daughters are accomplished tennis players.

Franklin H. Williams was an early architect of the Peace Corps. He worked at the agency from its inception in 1961 to 1963 and helped Sargent Shriver—the first Peace Corps Director—promote the agency and its programs to the world. Ambassador Williams’ exceptional public

service career included positions as the Peace Corps Regional Director for Africa, the U.S. representative

to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana.

The first Franklin H. Williams award ceremony was held in 1999. Since that time, the ceremony has been held in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012. To date, 101 outstanding returned Peace Corps volunteers have received the award.

Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment and the agency’s mission is to promote world peace and friend-ship and a better understanding between Americans and people of other countries. Visit www.peacecorps.gov.

This week my father, William Bill Blair, celebrated ninety-one years of living.

My siblings and I feel special that he is our dad and that he has been with us for so many years. Thank you, God, for blessing us with his presence.

All during my life, my father has attempted to demonstrate to his children a way of life.

I remember being a small girl and he taught me how to catch and pitch a baseball.

I looked forward to each

day when he returned from his duties as a newspaper publisher to be with me and show me how he had learned to pitch in the Negro Baseball Leagues.

I felt special and I felt as though I was the only thing that mattered to him.

He gave me his total attention and attempted to make me a perfect baseball player.

He has always been that way and always will.

My father taught my brothers and sisters to be self-reliant and to never give in or ever give up.

He said that if we trusted God, we would be shown a path to success. I have found during my years of

living that he was correct. Many people are not as

blessed as I have been to have a father in their lives for the many years that my siblings and I have had one.

It has made a special difference and we have been blessed by his presence.

It is my prayer that our father is with us for many more years. That, of course, will be the will of our God.

Whatever happens will happen, but I am delighted that God has given dad as many birthdays as He has.

Thank you God. Thank you dad!

On Wednesday I celebrated ninety-one years of living. Friends and family turned the day into a wonderful experience for me. I am grateful to God for having given me so many years of living. I often think of many of my friends who have passed on.

There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of my boyhood friend, Charles Brown, who would have been ninety-one in October had he lived. He was a wonderful person and his family and I still stay in contact with one another.

I realize that the Lord does not give many people the years that I have been blessed with and I have a special responsibility to live as God would want me to live and to make the contributions that I should make.

I may not live a perfect life, but I want everyone to know that each day I try to live a purposeful life. I am not about the business of wasting the time and space that the creator has given to me.

That would be an affront to God and to those who have looked to me for direction and purpose.

My father, William Blair, worked in a mill for thirteen dollars each week. It was my job as a twelve year old boy to go each Saturday to his place of employment to collect his weekly salary.

My mother would give me a shopping list and after collecting his pay I went to c collect groceries. I did it one week and my sister did it the next.

My father did not live as long as I did but in the years that God gave him he did all that he could for his family and those who were his neighbors and friends. I like to think that much of what I am comes from the example that my father set.

I am not certain that I will live another ninety-one years but thank God for those He has given me thus far, and thank each of you who wish me well.

ANOTHER YEAR

By Geraldine Davidson-Hooker

Raise your hand if you’ve had a crazy year with lots of changes--good, bad, or otherwise. OK! Just as I thought; we’re all in this together. The most difficult change I’ve been dealing with is aching knees from arthritis issues.

If you’re anything like me, you probably feel overwhelmed by all the changes you’d like to see in your life—especially as you age, when change is the “thing” that happens. I already know what I need to improve—my fitness level, availability to friends, and amount of quality time with God. But sometimes, the more I resolve to change, the

more I feel as though I’ve failed with my “to do” list.Realizing that this is just a season in my life, and life progresses, I must let go of demanding that life be predictable, easy, and peaceful. Such a relief! I decided to make my New Year’s resolution be about welcoming change with a willing heart. If you want to join me in this, here are some helpful ways to proceed. Since we live in a changing universe, expect change. Good change, difficult change, destructive change, transformative change. Try not to fight change. Make unconditional friendship with it, in whatever form it arrives. There is so much more to this life than we can ever understand through our tiny brains and fearful hearts. So in times of big change,

it’s good to be gentle and kind and patient with yourself. And to relax. The best peacemakers are those who are at peace with themselves. Be still and listen deeply for the truth that is carried on its winds--information about the past, wisdom about the present, and direction for the future.Join forces with the dynamic flow of life. The African-American theologian Howard Thurman said: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.” And so, as the old year changes into the New Year, ask what makes you come alive, and then go do it--for your own sake, and in service of the greater good.

Welcoming Change

Words of Wisdom

“A thoughtful mind, when itsees a Nation’s flag, sees notthe flag only, but the Nation it-self; and whatever may be itssymbols, its insignia, he readschiefly in the flag the Govern-ment, the principles, the truths, the history which belongs to theNation that sets it forth.”

ASK DR. HOLLIEby Dr. Karen Hollie

Dear Dr. Hollie,I would like to ask you a question about my relationship! I have been

with my boyfriend for 1 year now; but he is in jail at the moment. I really hate it because when he went to jail he promised me that he would get out in 6 months. It has been 9 months already and every time we talk he says he will be out the following month. This has been going on for the past 9 months already. Honestly I love him, and I want to be with him, but

I am also tired of waiting. I don’t know what to do! Should I keep on waiting or just move on?

Locked Up LoveDear Love,If you truly love someone sometimes it means making sacrifices. In your case it may mean waiting on him. However, it does not mean shutting down your goals, dreams and aspirations. It is equally as important to know what his are as well. As I often say, with anything, put a time frame on how long you are willing to wait and stand by that decision.

PRAYERCLOSET

By Rev. Clarence Henderson

Our prayer life ought to bring us enjoyment to the max. It may be that we are not enjoying the maximum of satisfaction in our prayer life. Here are a few questions we need to ask ourselves:Is my prayer life satisfactory? Are the people in my social life helpful to my prayer life? Are my business contacts and practices in harmony with God’s will?Do my reading, radio and television habits promote a better prayer life?Is my home life a help or a hindrance to my prayer life?Think about it; and let’s do all we can to improve our prayer life.

6 “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.”

We may not be able to control much of the adversities that we encounter in life, but we may be able to control our response by putting into practice

what Paul did. Being in the ministry for over 20 years now has allowed me to see people with all kinds of problems, and all kinds of responses. I have seen people become negative, and bitter in response to adversity. I have seen people point fingers of blame after encountering trouble, but this week let me tell you that I have been blessed, and inspired by so many people by observing their response to adversity. During the past few weeks I went to a funeral of a friend in Kaufman Texas. During the visitation at the funeral home, I ran into a couple that I had not seen in a couple of years. They were there to show their respect, and to comfort the grieving family. To see this couple, and the warm glow about them, one would never know the adversity that they have encountered the last few years. Over 5 years ago the lady was diagnosed with brain cancer. She had a large tumor on her brain which was malignant, and the doctors gave the couple little hope. Surgery was very risky, and could lead to serious complications, and even if the cancer was successful they gave little hope. But now years after the surgery, and after many trips to a cancer hospital for

chemo and radiation, the couple feels blessed for the extra time that they have had together. They are still fighting a battle, but they have a joy about them which is unmistakable. In speaking to them the other night, this is their words. “The Lord has been gracious to us” Is not that a blessing? I am amazed at people in those circumstances with that kind of attitude. And I know that it comes from knowing the Lord, and having a proper relationship with him, and looking at things through spiritual eyes. Amen! Paul in his message to Timothy shows us how he responds to adversity. In spite of being in prison, and facing death, he keeps the right kind of attitude. He does not allow himself to be angry and bitter, but uses his position and his problems as an opportunity to encourage Timothy. Let us look this week at Paul’s thoughts during adversity. I. He Is Challenged By His Suffering!V11. “Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For the cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have

committed unto him against that day.”a. His calling Paul knew that his calling was from God. It was not according to works, but according to his own purpose and grace. Amen!b. His chainsPaul is presently in chains. He is in bonds because of his calling, and his obedience to preach the gospel. Yet in spite of his present condition, he will not be discouraged nor detoured from what God has ordained, and instructed him to do. Amen! “I asked God for strength, that I might achieve. I was made weak, that I might learn to humbly obey. I asked for health that I might do great things. I was given infirmity that might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy; I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power, that I might have the praise of others. I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life. I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing I asked for, but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among men, most richly blessed! Amen!

DALLAS - Parkland Health & Hospital System and construction partner, BARA, have reached an important milestone in the construction of the new Parkland hospital.

The “topping out” milestone recognizes the overall completion of the building structure and represents the half-way point in the construction of the facility.

“The new Parkland is more than just a building. It represents the healthy future of Dallas. Parkland is committed to serving the residents of Dallas County now and into the future. We will be better able to provide safe, quality care and train new generations of health care providers in a healing, patient-centered environment,” said Walter Jones, AIA, Senior Vice President of Facilities Planning and Development. The $1.27 billion project includes an 862-bed hospital, outpatient center, utility plant and surface and garage parking. The new hospital will increase Parkland’s ability to care for rising volumes of patients by increasing the number of beds by 38 percent. Critical areas such as the operating room, burn center and neonatal intensive care unit, will also gain desperately needed space.

“What’s crucial about the new hospital is not only how we will redesign the building, but how patient care will be redesigned as well. The existing hospital was built in 1954

before air conditioning and computers. Delivery of care can be impacted when operating in an older hospital. However safe, patient care is the priority in the design of the new hospital, from how the patient rooms are laid out to where departments are located,” said Jones.

After the main hospital tower is officially “topped off” with the final structural beam, crews will continue to finish the hospital exterior and finish out spaces, such as patient rooms and departments, within the hospital.“As we finish out the structure, we continue to install glass on the Acute Care tower of the hospital. This will allow us to begin our finish trades,” said David Graham, Project Director for BARA, a joint venture formed to provide construction management services for the Parkland Replacement Program. After the demolition of an older parking garage this summer, BARA is now constructing the tower that will house Parkland’s Women and Infants’ Specialty Health services.

“We are continuing to work closely with Parkland to ensure top patient quality in the new hospital. We’re progressing with the light wells that will provide natural lighting into the NNICU rooms, bathroom pods are being installed in the Acute Care tower after being built in our pre-fabrication

facility across the street and the span and cantilever is now self-supported,” Graham states. The structure cantilever, one of the most visual pieces of the new Parkland hospital, is a 60-foot hangover facing Harry Hines Boulevard and is structurally complete through level 17.

One of the largest public hospital construction projects in the country, the new Parkland construction is estimated to generate approximately 3,000 jobs. Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) are an important part of the team working on the new hospital. To date, more than 200 contracts have been executed with M/WBE firms, according to the BARA team. In order to reduce the burden on taxpayers, the financing plan includes not only $747 million of combination tax and revenue bonds, but also $350 million from Parkland’s cash reserves and $150 million in philanthropic dollars raised by the Parkland Foundation.

Philanthropic support is a critical factor in funding the new hospital campus. The I Stand for Parkland capital campaign kicked off in September 2008 and has secured more than $108 million from generous benefactors throughout the region for the building program.

Parks Department Preparing for

EventsBy BRAD KELLAR Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE — Saturday will be busier than usual for the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Department. Local residents will be able to get their first look at the revamped Graham Park on one side of town and then have a chance to get freaky, show off their Halloween costumes and enjoy a movie on the other side.

A grand opening celebration for Graham Park, which has undergone a $1 million renovation effort, is scheduled for noon Saturday at 800 Walnut Street, the park’s main entrance. The event is expected to include free hot dogs, music, guest speakers and more.

The City of Greenville received a $500,000 grant

from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife for the effort to renovate Graham Park and provided a $500,000 match.

The improvements under the project included fountains, a fishing pier, a nine-hole disc golf course, a walking trail, a dog park and a splash pad, which will be available for use at the push of a button. The banks of the Graham Park “lake” were stabilized, while new and updated playground equipment was installed. The Sports Facility Construction Company received the bid on the project. The park has been closed to the public since ground was broken for the project in April.

Starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, the Greenville SportsPark will host the Freaky 5K Run for your Life and Movie in the Park. The Dr. Les T. Sandknop Family Practice and Cactus Saddlery are presenting the event, which includes a costume contest with $500 in cash prizes at 4:45 p.m., the

Freaky 5K Run (with registration starting at 4 p.m. Saturday) and a free showing of “Puss in Boots” at 7 p.m.

Fake Police Officer Commits Thefts

Another case of theft by fake police officer reportedTyler police detectives are investigating a second case involving a woman who presented a badge in plain clothes and stole a Hispanic male’s wallet. The incident occurred at D&N Grocery on West Bow Street on Sunday, Oct. 7. The female suspect asked for $10, and when she was told no, she presented a badge and identified herself as a police officer. The suspect took the victim’s wallet out of his pants and then left in a small grey Nissan car.

Last evening, a Hispanic male was at 5030 Highway 31 West, a car wash, when he was approached by a female claiming to be a police officer, police said. The victim stated that an unknown white female with short brown hair, possibly in her 40s, approximately 5-feet-5 and 130 pounds, approached him as he was parked near the car vacuums.

She presented a badge that led him to believe that she was a police officer. She informed him that she was going to search his car or he was going to be arrested. After searching his car, she stole a few unknown items from him. She then left in a dark colored compact vehicle. There is no other information available at this time. Anyone with information about the suspects involved in this crime is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department, at 903-531-1000, or Crimestoppers at 903-597-CUFF (903-597-2833). By Lorie BlairFriday, October 12 after all the

preambles standard of award banquets we were introduced to the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce 86th Annual Awards Banquet keynote speaker FraserNet, Inc’s Chairman and CEO George C. Fraser. Mr. Fraser is considered one

of the foremost authorities on networking, relationship building as well as a motivational speaker and

author. He has been recognized by UPSCALE and Black Enterprise magazines as a power broker and “Black America’s #1 Networker.” Mr. Fraser believes that, as in our

lives business is all about relationships. What is important is not where you start but where you end up. That we should build wealth that can be generationally transferred to others. He stressed that the only way we can

change our economic standing from one that needs others to survive that our

black businesses should become the number one employer of black people. He painted

that picture that when you enter an Asian-owned establishment you

will see that they employee their own. That as a black business owner we too must employee our own if we want to become a community that is independent and successful. As we look at ads Mr. Fraser noted

that the auto manufacturer BMW does not market to the black community. But as a community, we flock to the manufacturer and pour our wealth into their pockets. That as a community we must stop feeding a hand that does not feed us. On the subject of respect Mr. Fraser

said that on the most part we are not being respected by large business. That we should watch who spends money within our community.

If the company markets to you for you to spend your money with them but will not spend their money, or is it our money, back in our community then our wealth is being pulled from us. Our power is effective if it is

concentrated. If we cannot come together and if we continue staying disconnected we will never be able to concentrate our power and become the power brokers we are created to be. In closing he challenged us to remove

the people who drain you of your time and energy even if they are our friends and family. That as you remove them bless them and move on. Toxic relationships bring toxic outcomes and we must remove all that is toxic first so our blessing will come.

A Day with AKA

By Lorie Blair

S a t u r d a y, O c t o b e r 13th Elite News was invited to attend the AKA Sorority Omicron Mu Omega

Chapter Public Relation Workshop. As a newspaper we were asked to partner with

them to educate and inform their members what is PR and why is it important to their organization. Under the leadership of Chapter President Bennyfer Bridgewater the PR team focused on their goal to foster leadership development and growth and to increase knowledge of chapter and sorority operations and procedures and to implement activities that allow sorors to strengthen the Sisterhood within the chapter the PR team set out to educate their chapter on how they use PR. In the workshop Vikki Coleman-Melton, PR Chairperson and Moderator working with Sorors Monique Lunsford and Tatum Rodgers they used inventive ways to educate and inform their

members. Using the setting of a Talk Show Mrs Coleman-Melton and her team provided their members with their newsletter to refer back to, a well choreographed story and Elite News to get their message across. You must know your audience, talk in a language they understand, inform them and entertain them.

As an organization the PR team came prepared. They had done their homework and prepared for all possible scenarios. They not only informed their members but entertained them. As their media partner and guest speaker I could only reinforce what they had already shared and answer the questions their

members had for me. As with everyone their only other media outlet left for them to persue are the social networks. It too can provide The AKA Omicron Mu Omega Chapter with an immediate means to disseminate information.

Before they came to promoting concerts, and before they decided to place a premium on providing world class Entertainment via Blues Show to North Texas Metroplex, they spent their days Joyfully as productive and progressive private sector businesswomen in the Dallas-Fort Worth business community.

It takes only a cursory ear to understand the Joy, Excitement and reason why Big Al Wash the Entertainment visionary grasped in producing these latter day promoters.

Al Wash of Al Wash Entertainment, ALWE group who was recently featured as the long standing super promoter of last weekends Grambling and Prairie View State Fair Classic weekend spectacular. Next week he will be standing proudly in the backgraound as he oversee’s the Ladies responsible for producing the first annual Fort

Worth Blues Festival. The Fort Worth Blues

Festival will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center Ballroom at 1300 Commerce. It will feature legendary performers, Bobby Blue Bland, Mel Waiters, Benny Latimore and RL Griffin.

Promoters, Doc Holliday, Alyce Adair and Sherri Doll have joined forces with ALWE to return a strong Blues show to the Metroplex.

It is noted that these three sucessful business women have choreographed a strong line up for this maiden show. That their eye for opportunity and timing as well as their business sense will produce a sucessful adventure.

Doc Holliday is a prominent business women in Fort Worth. She is a sucessful dentist in the Fort Worth area, hence the name Doc Holliday. Doc Holliday is also chairman of

the Fort Worth Entertainment Committee for the Mainstreet Arts Festival.

Doc Holliday’s sister, Alyce Adair Jones is the owner of the Adair Eyeware. Her shop

provides high-end eyeware to the community.

The third partner of this trio is Sherri Doll. Sherri Doll is a professional Massage Therapist and Hairstylist to the entertianment community. It is through these women’s friendship with Al Wash

that they are joining forces to promote and produce this event.

What a way to return Fort Worth to it’s entertainment base, as the year has developed

Fort Worth is taking back its position as the Entertainment Capital of North texas with events like the battle of the Bands where Texas Southern University and Grambling State University recently participating in the Fort Worth Battle of the Bands staged earlier this year, and such other entities as the ever busy Jim and Gloria Austin of the Renissiance Cultural Museum, but

through this strong line up of blues preformers.

These men Bobby Blue Bland, Mel Waiters, Benny Lattimore and Dallas native R. L. Griffith together have over a century plus experience in performing the Blues. They alone can sing as only a true

blues singer can. Through song and strong stage presence they tell the struggles and history of the Southern Black community.

In a way only they can share the joy and pain that we know through music.

Al Wash was quoted in saying “that blues is known as the secular base of black music. It is the cornerstone that has rooted R&B and Hip Hop . It is the music that transcends race, culture and age.

Everyone may want to claim this music as their own but on Saturday, October 20th at 8pm it will belong to the community and people of Fort Worth. It will be one more step in returning Black Entertainment to Fort Worth.”

Tickets are still available through www. centralticketoffice.com You can charge by phone by calling 800-462-7979.

Ryder CupEurope 14 ½ - United

States 13 ½No Fault of Tiger

By: Mr. Ray WilliamsHad everybody produced ½ of a point on Sunday the results would have

been totally different, America 16 and Europe 12 and the cup would be on this side of Atlantic Ocean. For the first time in history our team took a nap on the back nine and came up short, so stop finger pointing at Tiger, he was not the only one playing for the USA team at Medinah Ill. Our team was made up of twelve of our finest players at

this time. I watch the GPA every time Tiger Woods tees it up and many of our American friends pull for anybody just beat the Tiger for us please. Golf has always been an individual sport, but for some reason now it is get any and everybody together so we can play AMERICA for the RYDER CUP. USA for years won this event at will, but

someone over here got sick of winning and suggested we take on the world and the gate has been open for incoming only. The players from across the ocean come to America to get an education at our expense, play on our tour win our money go home and talk bad about America

The Dallas Cowboys played four quarters of football on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, and lost. This game had it’s share of mistakes and misreads, but the Cowboys had a chance to win the game at the end. The difference in the game was the Jacoby Jones kickoff return. Jacoby Jones tied an NFL record with a 108-yard kickoff return, and the Baltimore Ravens held off the Dallas Cowboys 31-29 for the Ravens 14th straight regular-season home win. The Cowboys amassed 481 yards against a crippled Baltimore defense and the Cowboys held the ball for more than 40 minutes. Dallas totaled 227 yards, the most against the Ravens since the franchise arrived in Baltimore in 1996. the kickoff

return by Jones put the Ravens (5-1) ahead 24-13 in the third quarter, and Dallas (2-3) never got even. Jones’ return tied the mark set by Ellis Hobbs( Desoto) of New England in 2007 and tied in 2011 by Randle Cobb of Green Bay. The score was essential to the Ravens, who gained only 1 yard on three offensive plays in the third quarter. After Jones’ touchdown , the Cowboys took more than eight minutes off the clock with a 80 -yard drive. Romo connected with Bryant for 13 yards on a third -and-11 before throwing a 7- yard touchdown pass to Bryant to make the game 24-20.Dallas followed with two strong defensive series, and a short punt by

Baltimore preceded a 21- yard drive to a field goal by Bailey Flacco then directed a 10-play, 73 - yard march. A 31-yard completion to Anquan Boldin moved the ball to the Dallas 4,and Rice scored from the 1 to provide the Ravens an eight -point cushion. The Cowboys rallied, but could not complete the comeback. Romo went 25 for 36 for 261 and two touchdowns. DeMarco Murray ran for 93 yards, and Felix Jones had 92 yards on the ground and Bryant caught 13 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns.” At the end of the day, we’ve got to finish the game and we have to win the game,” Garrett said. “ We didn’t do that.” Mark A Toliver II
