OCTOBER MAIN MEETING: GRAPHICAL ANALYTICAL APPROACH TO PUMP OR FAN CURVE INTERACTION Speaker: Mr. Peter Narbonne, ACCO

Mr. Peter Narbonne, ACCO will be presenting a short technical seminar on the use of a graphical approach to analyzing the interaction of a pump or fan curve with a system curve. There will be a short review of the classic fan laws.

The graphical solution can be used when the fan laws alone cannot be used to predict performance

This will be a working session so please bring your calculators.

OCTOBER TECH FORUM: REVIEW OF ANSI/HI STANDARD 9.6.1-1998 ON NPSH MARGIN RECOMMENDATIONS Speaker: Mr. Mike Taylor, Dawson Company

Mr. Mike Taylor of Dawson Company will review Hydraulic Institute standards relating to NPSH margin recommendations for centrifugal pump selection. Topics will include NPSH basics, published NPSHR curves (and why they won’t guarantee cavitation-free operation), incipient cavitation, pump suction energy calculations and classification, and NPSH safety factor recommendations per ANSI/HI 9.6.1-1998.

Come join us – and specify quiet condenser water pumps on your next project.

PRESIDENT’S ZEPHYR

The President’sPresident’s Zephyr By Bob Brennan

September 11, 2001, aka 9-11-01, has become a new Day of Infamy in American history. Like December 7, 1941, the awful events of that second Tuesday of September have served to unite the Republic and to replace cynicism and petty squabbling with a focus on cherished ideals and a commitment to action.

So how does this relate to the Southern California Chapter of ASHRAE? After some introspection, my conclusion is that such a watershed experience should galvanize all of us to an even higher commitment to excellence in the conception, design, building, outfitting, commissioning, and operation of our building structures. And the bottom line? We are critically responsible for the health and comfort environment of workers. Let us, therefore, optimize that environment! This is what the HVAC&R professional needs to do in the interest of this industry, this society, this economy, and this way of life.

Be it resolved that we square our shoulders to this labor and do our part, or more than our part, to maintain and expand the robustness of the United States economy and the vitality of democracy. As Thomas Jefferson declared in timeless prose, let us have “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.

SEPTEMBER MAIN MEETING RECAP: TRENDS IN WATER TREATMENT By Bob Brennan

The Main Meeting program was a panel discussion on Trends in Water Treatment by Sid Schiff of Chempro and Jim Steele of the VRTX Division of A. W. Chesterton.

Sid Schiff of Chempo

Jim Steel of VRTX

Sid Schiff reviewed some key chemistry fundamentals and left the attendees with a much better appreciation of pH values and their exponential nature. Common cooling tower issues of biological growth and white rust were reviewed, and there was an overview of the typical chemical program for treating cooling tower/condenser water loops. Sid Schiff recommended staying away from using galvanized cooling towers, suggesting stainless steel instead, or at least a tower material that does not suffer the problems that the zinc coating does.

Jim Steele did his presentation on a non-chemical method of treating water. Simply said, the VRTX (“vortex”) unit uses induced cavitation of colliding vortex streams of water in a chamber to alter water chemistry. The basic chemical equation is Ca(HCO3)2YCaCo3 \ + CO2 [ + H2O . The net effect of this side stream treatment is to keep the pH stable (slightly alkaline), control scale, control corrosion, and control biofouling (including destruction of such things such as legionella). This technology is currently being used by several Fortune 500 companies such as Coca-Cola.

SEPTEMBER TECHNICAL MEETING: VIBRATION AND ITS CONTROL By: Dan Robinson, M.W. Saussé & Company, Inc.

The discussion talked about vibration isolation and seismic restraint systems. First, topic was practical guidelines for specifying spring deflections. The proper selection depends mostly on the relationship of the supported equipment R.P.M. and the spring natural frequency. An added factor is the stiffness of the supporting building structure.

The code requirements were also discussed for anchorage of mechanical equipment, piping, and ductwork. The building codes now consider many more factors to determine proper anchorage including soil type, equipment elevation in the structure, and the proximity of the project to a known seismic fault. Other factors that are needed from the structural engineer on a project in order for him to do the anchor calculations.
