2013 BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTION The Cherry Creek School District Board of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 called for an election to fill two seats on the board. Two of the five District Director seats will appear on the ballot. Former board President Jennifer Churchfield is term limited and will retire as of Election Day Nov. 5, 2013. Karen Fisher, a parent and volunteer in the district is the sole candidate for the seat in District E, currently held by Ms. Churchfield. Incumbent and parent Randy Perlis is running for a second term in District D. Parent Brian Arnold is challenging Mr. Perlis for the District D seat. Five elected Board of Education members provide for quality educational opportunities in Cherry Creek Schools. They act in accordance with the requirements of Colorado and federal laws, while remaining responsive to the unique needs of Cherry Creek School District citizens. The board delegates to the Superintendent the daily operation of the district. The board invites citizen involvement in the schools, believ-ing that a quality education is a responsibility all must share. Cherry Creek is divided into five Director Districts. A Board of Education member from each Director District is elected for a four-year term by registered district voters on a nonpartisan ballot. Although each member of the board represents a Director District, all candidates run at-large and all residents of the district may vote in each race. Visit http://www.cher-rycreekschools.org/BOE/Pages/2013-Board-of-Education-Election.aspx for candidate biographies and voter registration information.

SUMMER BOND PROJECTS DONE; MANY MORE TO COME Bond projects ranging from critical safety enhancements to much-needed mechanical, electrical and plumbing replacements were completed at one preschool, 10 elementary schools, one middle school, four high schools and Legacy Stadium during the summer of 2013, the first phase of the 2012 bond issue, approved by Cherry Creek voters last November. “Promises made, promises kept,” said Sheila Graham, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Support Services, during a presentation to the Board of Education on bond project progress during the board’s regular meeting on Sept. 9. Graham also reported that all projects to date have been completed on time and on or under budget. View Graham’s presentation at http://www.cherrycreekschools.org/News/Documents/Summer%20Bond%20Projects%20-%20Update%20September,%202013-%20September%209%20831a,%202013.pdf. The well-worn carpeting at Dakota Valley Elementary was replaced, making the build-ing cleaner, quieter and more comfortable for students and staff. At Sagebrush Elementary, the aging roof was replaced and the parking lot and driveways were repaved. The chiller unit at Greenwood Elementary was replaced, to keep the school cool and comfortable even on hot, late summer days. At Thunder Ridge Middle School, the public address system, which is an essential communications tool, especially in emergency situations, was upgrad-ed. Students returning to Cherry Creek and Eaglecrest high schools this fall noticed many improvements; new carpeting in the East and West buildings and new landscaping at Creek, and renovations to the media production classrooms, college and career center and main office at Eaglecrest. Major mechanical upgrades and electrical and plumbing replacements made at Eaglecrest are less visible, but just as important as the renovations.

Also during the summer, design work was completed for addi-tions to Cherokee Trail and Grandview high schools, where enroll-ment exceeds capacity. Construction of those additions, and work on many additional bond projects at schools across the district, will begin in 2014 and continue through the summer of 2015.

S.T.A.R. MENTORS HELP NEW TEACHERS SHINE The Cherry Creek School District’s S.T.A.R. Mentor program, which provides support for new teachers, was presented to the Colorado Board of Education during a study session on Sept. 11. The State Board is studying exemplary induction programs across the state. The program was also recognized by the Cherry Creek Schools Board of Education at its regular meeting on Sept. 9. The S.T.A.R. Mentor program is a partnership between the Cherry Creek Education Association and Cherry Creek Schools. Founded in 1994, S.T.A.R. stands for Staff Training Assistance and Renewal. S.T.A.R. Mentors are master teachers with years of classroom experience and proven success with students. They accept a three-year assignment to work with Cherry Creek teach-ers who are new to the profession or the district, and help them develop effective instructional techniques and classroom manage-ment skills. “I couldn’t have gotten through my first year without her,” said middle school teacher Lauren West of the S.T.A. R. Mentor she worked with when she began her teaching career nine years ago. West is now a S.T.A.R. Mentor herself and will help between 13 and 20 new teachers navigate their first year in the classroom.

“Working with brand new teachers is one of the best jobs,” said West. “And it’s especially important this year, with every-thing being thrown at them,” she added, referring to the new Colorado Academic Standards and Educator Effectiveness sys-tem which are being implemented statewide this year. The district has seven S.T.A.R. Mentors for the 13-14 school year. They are: Keith Garvert, Elizabeth Maloney and Mark Reidel, who work with elementary level teachers; Jason Gilman, Shelley Stancer and Lauren West, who work with middle and high school teachers; and Billie Griffin, who works with Special Education teachers.

Aurora Small Business NetworkWhere Business & Customers Meet! The Aurora Small Business Network was organized to provide a networking and social group for small and home-based business owners in Aurora, Colorado and the surround-ing areas. The network’s main purpose is to bring locally based businesses and our community together. The ASBN is a selective group, including only the best and most reliable product and service businesses. You can find us on the web at aurorasbn.com and on Facebook. We are currently running a “500 Likes” contest. Like our Facebook page to receive network updates, share our contest post, and be entered to win a great vendor package filled with products, coupons, and gift certificates. Would you like to join our network? Do you want to grow your business? Please call our Lead Organizer, Jennifer Monson at 303-870-7692 to inquire about joining the network.

Board Notes Board member Barb Wahl resigned at our August meeting since Barb has moved out of the neighborhood. The Board thanks Barb for all her work with the HOA. Please contact the Board President if you are interested in filling in the remainder of her term.

Mission Viejo NEXTDOOR Growing! As was announced in the Mission Viejo Reporter June and September newsletter, a new virtual neighborhood website is avail-able now with over 100 residents. NEXTDOOR, a private social network for neighborhoods. Basically, NEXTDOOR is a private social networking service for neighborhoods in the United States. It allows users to connect with people who live in their neighborhood. This site will NOT take the place of our current website but will be a private addendum. Nextdoor’s mission is to bring back a sense of community to the neighborhood. Get the latest on events, crime updates and neighborhood watch items of interest. To become a member of the Mission Viejo NEXTDOOR Community go to https://missionviejoco.nextdoor.com/login/ and sign in by establishing a new account.

Volunteer Newsletter Carriers Still Needed Many of the volunteers who deliver the newsletter report that they enjoy the walk and look forward to delivering the newsletter each month. The newsletter does an excellent job communicating “town news” throughout the neighborhood. Most routes can be done within one hour. We are presently looking for more volunteers. Please call us on our Mission Viejo Hot Line at 720-443-0HOA (720-443-0462) if you are able to help us out. Thank you for this great neighborhood service!
