LifeKeys Fall Class

Take time this fall for the LifeKeys class

at Zion, and learn more about what

energizes you. It’s a great chance to

discover who you are, who God made you

to be.

Pastor Sara Vanderpan will be teaching

the series, which gives you a chance to dig

into who you are, why you’re here, and

what you do best.

The Thursday night classes begin this

month, running October 2, 9, 23, and 30

from 6:30-8pm in Fellowship Hall at

Zion.

Sign up is still open for October by calling

the Zion office (763.682.1245) or

emailing [email protected].

The cost to cover materials is $20, and all

other costs are being funded by a grant

from the Zion Foundation.

The LifeKeys Discovery Course offers

participants a structured opportunity to

discover or affirm their talents, spiritual

gifts, passions, and personality - all that

God made them to be. The printed

materials use engaging stories,

inventories, self-tests and other easy-to-

use exercises while the class time offers

explanation, support, and just a bit of

fun!

Check out the video at ZionBuffalo.org/

LifeKeys-2014 to hear what previous

participants have to say about this course.

Living God’s Call

Harvest of Hands is November 1

The Harvest of Hands Festival is an annual event held at Zion to feed the hungry in our own community and around the world. Proceeds of the 2014 sale will benefit the Buffalo Food Shelf and a global hunger project.

Craft groups work on a variety of projects throughout the year in preparation for the annual festival in November. During October, the groups meet in the Wilderness Room every Tuesday morning at 9am and every Wednesday evening at 7pm, continuing to finish up craft projects and make other preparations.

All are welcome at the craft sessions, either to work on the planned projects or to bring your own projects and enjoy the morning or evening with friends. Join us for fun, fellowship, and a sense of accomplishment.

Crafters can also work on projects at home. Supplies are available for home projects. Please help yourself to craft kits, available near the Information Desk, with materials for at-home projects. Please return the completed kits by October 31. Contact Joy Arens for more information.

Additional opportunities to get involved include:

October 6 & 7, from 5-8pm: Egg Rolls

October 25, from 9am-noon: Finish projects & baked goods (lunch included)

October 29, starting at 7:30pm: Set up tables

October 30 & 31, from 9am-4pm: Set up

Volunteer for the event and/or to donate supplies for egg rolls and brunch at the information desk on Sundays or in the office during the week. Cash donations are also needed to help purchase supplies not donated for the egg rolls and brunch.

Sweaters that you no longer wear can be dropped off in the bin near the Information Desk from October 1-22. Sweaters will be cleaned and resold.

As you do your fall cleaning, keep in mind the White Elephant sale. White Elephant items can be brought to the Red Sea Room starting Monday, October 27.

Other items that sell well include preserves, jams, jellies, salsas, pickles, baked goods, candies, and dried flowers. These can be brought to the Wilderness Room.

Created for Eternity

We are created in God’s image – that is what Genesis 1:26 says. Have you ever thought about what it means that you are created in God’s image? One big thing it means is that we are created for eternity, not just for this earth. God is eternal, meaning, God was, is, and always will be. We have that same eternity built into us.

There are some implications for this, namely that we live with a:

Hungering for Home – a hunger deep within to be accepted, as we are, by our ultimate place of home, God.

Searching for Identity – our ultimate identity is not as a free agent roaming the earth looking to make our lives what we want it to be. But, who we really are is found in whose we are – God’s creation, loved and deemed to be “good” by God.

Longing for Belonging – God exists as a community of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Created in that image, we long to belong to, and with, other people.

That is why we do what we do as a church! In order to meet these three deep human needs, we, Zion, have identified three vision initiatives:

Celebrating on Sundays – creating a Sunday morning experience where people can hear the good news of God’s love for them.

Living God’s Call – helping people learn how to live out their true identity as God’s people as they go about their daily lives.

Connecting with Care – helping people connect in genuine community with others in a way that provides support and strength to each other.

And, have you noticed that those three human longings and three vision initiatives line up with the three elements of our mission? Zion seeks to:

Share Christ’s Word – the very Word that tells us of God’s love.

Strengthen Faith – to encourage people in living out their faith.

Serve Those in Need – supporting and strengthening people who need our help.

Everything we do is about those three things – meeting human needs with the love of God. So, thank you for all the ways you help Zion do that. Thank you for making this such a great place of which to be a part. Please remember to support Zion with your finances as well because it takes financial support to carry out our mission. Thank you.

to trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world. 3

Our Church Home

Karie Bruder grew up attending St Paul's Lutheran, a WELS congregation and school in New Ulm, MN, and also attended Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School in New Ulm.

Her faith journey was greatly impacted by her high school youth group minister.

He showed me that church is a great guide for life but it is also a great place to come to enjoy life and friends. He helped create an atmosphere for me of a place I can always go, and planted the knowledge that it is OK to hang out at church, to laugh and enjoy being there. That church is a place to meet new people and be with old friends - not just to go one time a week for an hour.

She and Brian moved to the Buffalo area as newlyweds, almost 22 years ago. They came from very different faith backgrounds, and were looking for a large church with both traditional and contemporary worship services, a variety of ministries they (and their future children) could get involved with.

We visited a lot of the local churches trying to find one that fit the two of us together. We visited Zion and we both knew after that first visit we had found our church home.

Karie and Brian now have two children Tyler (a high school senior) and Morgan (in 6th grade). Karie works in advertising and marketing at the Drummer and Wright County Journal Press in Buffalo. She enjoys gardening, hardanger and cross stitching, reading, photography, and going to the kids’ sporting and music events.

Karie has been a Sunday school volunteer at Zion for many years, and is currently serving as a confirmation small group leader. As a high school parent, she has been a key volunteer in the kitchen for the Italian Dinner fundraiser.

I love that you can be as involved as you want to be, and there is something for everyone. I enjoy the friends we have made in the church and I love that my kids WANT to go to the church events and services.

One of Karie's favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths."

It reminds me that I am not in charge. That I need to let “it” go with prayer.

Karie and Brian had served as greeters at Zion many years ago but were surprised when Pastor Luke and Sherilyn asked them to lead one of the new Sunday Welcome Crews.

I thought “not me” and “I don't have time!” But after some thought I realized that this is a great way to get more involved and get to know more people. Being a team lead has put me in contact with a whole different group of people that I have seen, but not yet met ...until

Strength for the Journey

Adult Education

Are you holding the fourth Sunday of each month open for Strength for the Journey forums?

These monthly forums will be held in the Zion library from 9:30-10:30am every fourth Sunday, each month with a different topic.

Single event speakers will highlight some topics that are crucial to families and individuals in areas of wellness and health: physical, emotional, and spiritual. No cost, no preparation, but a great take-away of ideas and a way to connect with other Zion friends with similar interests.

October 26: “Navigating Tools for Caregivers”

Whether you’ve been a caregiver for a parent, a neighbor, or a spouse, you know that you can’t “go solo.” But how do you find the resources needed to care for your loved one and also find the strength that you need as the caregiver? Heather VanCleave, RN, MA, from Great River Area Faith in Action, based in Becker, will present tools to navigate and coach the caregivers.

November 23: “Joy for the Journey”

Dawn Fischer and Beverly Koopman join to present a forum on maintaining the joy of the holiday season, even in times when stresses, worries, and the “not-so-good” days get us down.

Connected and Cared For

Joy Klein grew up in a Wisconsin Synod church, but always knew she would not be married or raise a family there.

I wanted to find a church home that was more welcoming and inclusive. Zion was that place.

Joy and Keith have been married since 1996. They live in Big Lake and have two children. Their son, Morgan, is a freshman and daughter, Madison, is a senior. College is on the horizon! They also have two English pointers and two cats.

They lived in Delano and visited multiple churches prior to their wedding, and Zion felt right for them.

I knew several people who were members and they had great things to say about the congregation. Taking the new member class and meeting Pastor Ed and Pastor John sealed the deal!

Zion is Going Mobile

Zion is going mobile with a new Guidebook app!

Members are encouraged to download our mobile guide and use it to access the calendar, find sermons and announcements, registration links, and connect with staff and social media.

This is separate from, and complimentary to, other Zion networks like the Table (which is private), Facebook, and InFellowship (a registration and small groups tool).

A key feature of the mobile app is that the most important information (including the calendar and the weekly announcement PDF) is downloaded to your device, and stays with the app, even when you aren’t connected to data or WiFi.

Find a preview and download links at guidebook.com/g/zionbuffalo/.

The app is compatible with iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and Android devices. Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry users can access the same information via our mobile site at guidebook.com/guide/23078/.

Connecting With Care

Swedish Heritage

Darrell Anderson grew up by Cannon Falls, MN on a farm with his parents and three brothers. The farm had pigs, cattle, and crops. His home church was Spring Garden Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls, a congregation with a deep Swedish culture (Darrell’s heritage is 100% Swedish). Darrell still tries to visit the church when he can.

His biggest blessings from God have been his wife, his family, his belief, and the good life he has had.

Darrell attended Gustavus Adolphus in St Peter, where he met a girl from Buffalo named Karleen. After college he served in the army for two years, and then worked as an accountant for Nash Finch, near Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.

Karleen grew up on a farm west of Buffalo. She attended country school, just as Darrell had done, near her home. She went to church at Carlslund, the church that her great-grandfather had helped start in 1866.

Darrell and Karleen were married in 1958 at the church which had changed its name from Carlslund to Zion. They made a home in Karleen’s former schoolhouse, and had four children in four years, Ramona, Conrad, Daniel and Nathan. Darrell left Nash Finch, went to the Buffalo Coop Creamery, and eventually managed Centra Sota in Buffalo. The family enjoyed camping for two weeks each summer, with all the kids in tents, then in later years in a camper, and eventually traveled to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, and other European countries. Over time, the Anderson family grew to include six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Darrell has served at Zion in many capacities over the years; as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, church council member, and Stephen Minister. In the late 1960s he was part of a group that was trained to teach the Bethel Bible series at Zion. Other leaders included his wife, Karleen, John and Joyce Edwards, and Ruth Cornell.

After retiring, Darrell enjoyed odd jobs, including building on to his country school house. He collects ‘old things’ and has a house and barn full of items that Darrell and Karleen collected together over the years. Darrell himself collected Lipton tea pots, cast iron fry pans, and country school memorabilia.

Darrell has continued to volunteer at Zion in many ways since retirement. Most visibly, he had been head usher at the early worship service for thirteen years until this past spring. He also helps prepare the newsletter mailing each month, takes people to the doctor, is involved with the White Elephant room at Harvest of Hands, works in the kitchen, and has served on various committees. The most memorable was the building committee for the ‘new’ church which was built in 1989.

Sponsors

Just as the family grocery bill continues

to grow, the cost for Wednesday supper

ingredients also grows. Consider being a

Wednesday Supper Sponsor by donating

$100 that will be used to subsidize the

donation amount at a low cost for any

and all Wednesday supper diners.

Keeping in Contact

Zion is a big place, and sometimes

things happen in life that keep us from

being as connected to the community as

we would like. We would like to make

sure that all Zion members feel like

part of the church, whether they are

able to worship regularly or not. If you

or someone you know is unable to

worship regularly, or would consider

themselves homebound, or are living in

a senior care facility, please let us know

so we can make sure you are receiving

communion and pastoral care. We want

to make sure all the people of Zion are

able to stay connected. Please call or

email Ann or Dawn in the office with

information as to how we can reach you

or someone you know that you’d like us

to include in our visitation schedule.

Thanks, Pastor Luke and Pastor Ted

Stop That Identity Thief

Adapted by Karen Worner from the

Summer Thrivent Magazine

In just the first seven months of 2014, at

least 11 million private records were put

at risk in more than 300 separate data

breaches, according to the nonprofit

Identity Theft Resource Center. The U.S.

Department of Justice found that in 2012,

identity theft crimes cost almost $25

million. In 2013, stolen government

documents/benefits were the most

common form of identity theft (34%),

followed by credit card numbers (17%),

phone or utilities information (14%), and

bank account numbers (8%).

Some instances of identity theft are

unauthorized charges. Others are smaller

charges, such as the cost of a tank of gas

or a meal at a fast food restaurant, that

blend in so they’re more likely to go

unnoticed. And still others are large

withdrawals totaling thousands of dollars

from bank and investment accounts.

Don’t despair: There’s a lot you can do to

help keep your data to yourself.

Set and Change Passwords Don’t skip this one! Create a different

password for all financial and personal

accounts a few times a year. The Federal

Trade Commission suggests creating a

hard to crack password by using the first

letter of each word in a special phrase (I

want to see the Pacific Ocean=Iw2stPO).

Check Accounts Regularly Besides checking bank and credit card

account activity, also check utilities and

services that have been set up with

automatic payments, and online accounts

like Amazon or eBay that may be tied to

your credit cards or financial accounts.

Be Wary of Free Wi-Fi According to the Federal Trade

Commission, unless the business offers a

password-protected system, it may not be

safe. Computer-savvy thieves can more

easily hack into Wi-Fi systems without

passwords and then steal the user names

and account passwords saved on your

computer, tablet or smartphone. Even if

The Big Deal about Coffee

by Lew Hille

Zion’s Global Mission Committee has been encouraging and supporting the monthly sale of fair trade organic Lutheran World Relief coffee, tea and cocoa since November 2011. In July we were invited to make coffee, tea and cocoa available through Buffalo’s Local Roots Coop. To learn more about Local Roots and the variety of local products they offer, go to localfoodmarketplace.com/localroots.

There are several reasons why the “coffee project” was started, why it continues and is expanding at Zion and into the Buffalo community. Let’s review a few:

Zion’s coffee project sales support farmers and producers who grow the coffee, tea and cocoa. The price Lutheran World Relief/Equal Exchange pays to farmer cooperatives is 50% or higher than what farmers would receive in the marketplace. In addition to a higher price, Equal Exchange is a long-term stable buyer in an otherwise volatile commodities market.

For example, fair trade products sold at Zion and at Local Roots come from over 75 producer cooperatives worldwide (see lwr.com or equalexchange.coop for details). This means that those growers are guaranteed a market and price. It’s a contract of sorts, just like many American farmers contract their corn or soybean crop. So there is an issue of fairness. If we are going to drink coffee anyway, why not drink good, recently roasted coffee that also gives a fair price to the hard working farmers who labored to grow it?

There is a growing public concern for where and how our food is grown and how it gets to our tables. Just note the growth in farmers markets and local coops around the US along with the growing interest in organically grown foods. The Lutheran World Relief coffee you buy at Zion the second Sunday of each month, or weekly at Buffalo’s Local Roots Coop, travels from the producers, to the employee-owned roasting cooperative in the Boston area, to your table right here in Buffalo.

One dollar is added to each item to support Zion mission projects (Jamaica, Zambia, Redeemer Lutheran in North Minneapolis and summer family mission trips).

So supporting the “coffee project” at Zion or through purchases at Buffalo’s Local Roots Coop is a big deal:

1) Producers get a better price and some long term stability,

2) 20 cents per pound goes from Equal Exchange to the Lutheran World Relief Small Farmer Fund,

3) support goes to Zion’s mission projects,

4) people can learn about fair trade, 5) and you can enjoy good quality coffee, tea or cocoa products knowing you’ve done a little bit of good in the world.

Now that’s a big deal!

Discipline that Connects

with Your Child's Heart

What kids learn when they are disciplined

will last a lifetime. Join us on Wednesday

night, November 19 from 6-7:30 for this

important topic led by Jim and Lynne

Jackson from Connected Families. When

parents are thoughtful about discipline,

their kids grow up knowing that they are

valued people built for God’s purposes.

Join us as we learn from Jim and Lynne

and hear practical ideas for parents of

any age child. This workshop is deeply

biblical, immediately useful, and will

change your life and your child’s life for

good!

Christmas Program at Zion

Has your child been involved with Zion's

Christmas Program in past? Would they

like to get involved this year? Now is the

time! This year, children (ages 5-12) can

sign up for a "Get to Know Me" audition

(very informal and fun!) after school on

10/22, 10/26, 10/28 or 10/29. Sign up

will be online and info will be sent out to

parents via email the beginning of

October. The Christmas Program will take

place at Zion on Sunday, December 14 at

8:30 and 10:30 services.

Sanctuary Sundays Continue

Even with children beginning in worship, we will continue with our tradition of Sanctuary Sundays (when children join us in worship for the entire service). These Sundays often fall on "holiday" weekends and therefore tend to be when more of our families are gone... but we encourage you to worship with your family wherever you are! Whether you are in town or traveling during these Sanctuary Sunday weekends... we pray you will find a place to worship and continue to grow in faith as a family!

Trunk or Treat

It's that time of year again to come together for our fall festival... Trunk or Treat! This fun, family event will take place on Saturday, October 25 from 2-4 pm in the Zion parking lot. You can get involved in a variety of ways:

Host a Trunk - let the CFM staff know that you would like to decorate your car and provide treats for kids who attend that day and we will save you a spot!

Volunteer for the event - we need helpers for set up (12-2 pm), during the event (with food, games, etc) and with clean up (2-3 pm)!

Donate candy or other kid-friendly items to be handed out to the children that attend - last year we estimate that we gave away over 1,000 treats... at EACH Trunk! That means we need lots of help to provide these treats! Items can be anything from fruit snacks to pencils but must be new. Donation bins will be available in the Narthex on Sunday, 10/12 and 10/19.

Come and enjoy the fun! No matter what your age, we hope you will come and enjoy this wonderful, community event. It's a great time to greet the kids and see them in their costumes.

Kindergarten Teacher

Katie Benson grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota, and was raised Catholic. She is married to Jeff, and they have three sons, Mitch (16), Joel (7) and Grant (6).

Jeff grew up Lutheran and they found Zion together around the time they were married.

We loved the welcoming and joyful feel of Zion, and how friendly the congregation is. There are many opportunities for the kids (and adults ) to get involved, such as volunteering in the community, singing in choirs, participating in the Christmas program, etc.

Katie got involved with the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) organization at a time when she needed it most, and that organization helped her greatly in her faith journey.

Katie has just begun her third year of teaching Sunday School at Zion, and this year is teaching a group of kindergarten students at the 10:30 hour.

Undimmed Light

Adapted from the newsletter of our

partner congregation, Redeemer Lutheran

Church

Congratulations to Redeemer, and to

everyone who served to make this year’s

Block Party the best one ever. We don’t

have the final count yet, but the estimate

of the number of people in attendance was

somewhere between 800 and one million.

Everything was flawless, except that the

company contracted to provide the dunk

tank forgot to deliver the dunk tank!

Still, everyone in attendance had their

hearts touched by the wonderful

experience of interacting with and being a

part of a beloved community.

Wonderful music was provided by the

house band Sancophonix, along with the

Redeemer music ministry team. Mission

partners, neighborhood residents, and

Redeemer grill masters kept the food

flowing. The block party was blessed this

year with the addition of the community

bread oven. A resident in the 16-unit

apartment complex donated and grilled

chicken wings. This year we even shared a

corn roasting machine with our partners

at Christ the King in New Brighton.

Partner congregation members served

food, painted faces, and set up and

cleaned up after the event.

When we turn on the television, we see so

many examples of how the light of hope

appears to be dim in the world.

We see in the news, the

challenge and tensions

embodied in the people of

Ferguson, Missouri, and the

unaccompanied minors

experiencing walls of

resistance, rather than hope

and promise.

In the Block Party, we

experience undimmed light.

We experience a beacon of

hope! We gather, and we

celebrate together as God’s

beloved community. It was a

wonderful day for everyone,

and for this we give God

thanks!

2014 Zambia Team

This year a team of four Zion members have decided to volunteer at Villages of Hope in Zambia for two weeks, leaving the end of December. This is the third Zion trip to Zambia in recent years and another trip is already being looked into during the summer of 2016.

Why is this important?

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in southern Africa has left Zambia with 1.1 million orphans—nearly ten percent of the population. “Villages of Hope” is a part of “All Kids Can Learn, International” (akcli.org), an organization dedicated to a “Christ centered model of self-sustaining orphan care, education, business training, and job creation for orphans and the community.” Kathleen and Benedict Schwartz, a sister and brother-in-law to Zion member Minda Squadroni, are the co-founders of this organization. Continuing to build and strengthen a deeper relationship with our Zambia brothers and sisters helps us to better understand and support the villages’ needs and priorities.

The 2014 Team

The 2014 team is made up of Julie Swaggert, Denny, Kim and Neil Gleason. Key areas this team will be working on include; agricultural and construction projects, and assisting with teacher in-service sessions and classroom prep for their school year beginning in early January 2015.

A portion of the August sweet corn sales and your generous donations will be used to purchase supplies for this mission, and some specific items may be collected later this year.

Thank you for your prayers and support, and to all who supported the sweet corn sales for missions!

Joy believes God put her husband, Keith, in her life because He knew she would need a strong person to walk her journey with her. Joy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and with bone metastases in 2009.

At first, I was angry and scared and had the "why me" questions. I didn't understand what this was supposed to teach me. Keith has been my rock as I've gone through surgeries and numerous chemo and radiation treatments. I know it hasn't been easy for him to watch me deal with cancer, but his love and support have made it possible for me to stay strong and positive.

Philippians 4:13 hits home for Joy: "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."

Some days I need His strength more than others, but He hasn't let me down yet.

As her journey continues with its ups and downs, she has come to realize that God has some lessons for her along the way.

It doesn't sound reasonable, but many survivors will say that cancer was the best thing that's happened to them. I understand that now. I've met some amazing people because of cancer. I've learned to let go of things that I have no control over. I'm a lot stronger and more resilient than I ever thought possible. I don't think I would have realized any of those things if God hadn't given me a shove in the right direction. Another survivor once said, "God, if this is what it takes to wake me up, then WAKE ME UP!" I thank God for my wake-up call.

Keith and Joy moved to Big Lake in 1999, and decided to stay at Zion, despite the 25-30 minute drive, because they felt connected and cared for at Zion. That decision has been affirmed for Joy through the last ten years.

Zion is like family. I feel at home here. Countless people at Zion have asked me how I'm doing, given me hugs, and told me they're praying for me. Those gestures give me strength and I carry those sentiments in my heart long after I leave worship on Sundays.

Joy has been a volunteer with a variety of Sunday School and office projects at Zion, and enjoys attending the Women's Retreat and Women's Brunch each year.

Those are great ways to connect with other women at Zion.

Joy has been part of the volunteer proofreading team at Zion for about three years. The proofreaders receive two early drafts of the newsletter by email each month and send corrections back.

I'm not an English major, but little things bother me. I'm always pointing out mistakes on signs and menus and even in the newspaper.

Our Mission... Zion seeks to

Share Christ’s Word,

Strengthen faith, and

Serve those in need.

Our Vision… Helping people experience the joy of

life in Christ by:

1. Celebrating on Sundays:

Creating Sunday morning experiences that invite, welcome, engage, and inspire people to live for Christ.

2. Living God’s Call:

Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them to

trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world.

3. Connecting with Care:

Creating a community where people are connected in relationships and

supported in need.

I like to help out and I feel I'm doing my part. I take my time and review the newsletter carefully while I'm proofreading. I feel like I'm paying more attention to all of the stories now. Before I started proofreading, I usually didn't read the newsletter that thoroughly. I probably missed some good stuff.

During the week, Joy connects to Zion through Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and the Table.

Social media is the way most people, especially youth, interact now. It's important that Zion realizes that and uses technology to stay connected with members and with the community.

Joy usually attends the 8:30 worship service, and finds that social media makes it easier to get to know people who attend the other services.

When Zion posts on Facebook, I pay attention to who comments. There have been times when I knew who the person was, but had no idea that they attended Zion.

Recently, Joy was one of the testers for Zion's new mobile app.

The Guidebook app is an amazing tool. It's very easy to use, even for folks who may not consider themselves very tech-savvy. Anything a person (member or guest) might want to know about Zion is right there. I especially like the calendar module. All of the activities and events are laid out in an easy-to-read format so you can see, hour-by-hour, what is happening at Zion on any given day. Another thing I like about Guidebook is the social module, which has all of Zion's social media connections in one place. I can see what Zion has posted on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc. without having to open each of those apps outside of Guidebook. It's going to be exciting to see how the congregation interacts with this new app. I hope it becomes a popular way for us to connect with one another.

The app has now been released to the congregation and can be found at https://guidebook.com/g/zionbuffalo/

Joy works part-time as a workers' compensation paralegal at Cousineau McGuire, a law firm in St. Louis Park.

I've been fortunate enough to work at home since Madison was born. I only need to go to the office for a couple of hours twice a week. Working from home has been a huge blessing during my cancer journey as I am able to schedule appointments and rest as needed without worrying about how much work I'm missing.

Reading is Joy's passion, and she volunteers in the media center at Independence Elementary in Big Lake and the Great River Regional Library in Monticello.

I'm awake long after my bedtime because of "just one more chapter." I love to read aloud and I miss doing that now that the kids are older.

She also likes to do crosswords, take pontoon rides with the family on area lakes, and volunteer at the Big Lake Food Shelf.

The Feste Burg

“A Mighty Fortress,” the hymn written by

Protestant reformer Martin Luther in

1529, is powerful in English but even

better in its original German. Historian

Michael Streich notes that Luther

compares God not only to a fortress but to

a completely secure stronghold, or Feste

Burg.

“A burg was a fortified town,” Streich

says. “When invaders approached, the

surrounding populace fled to the safety of

the walls.”

When we need a place of refuge, God

offers his Mighty Fortress, his Feste Burg.

Within this refuge, with our value based

on our relationship to God rather than on

earthly achievements, we’ll never be put

to shame. Inside this fortified town, the

God who desires an eternal relationship

with us delivers, rescues and saves us.

now. I realized this would give me the opportunity to be more involved at a level that is manageable with a full time job, family, and household to run.

Sunday Welcome Crews are responsible for leading hospitality ministries on Sunday mornings, including greeting, hosting, ushering, and serving coffee.

This is the front line ... our first impression is what makes people decide if they want to come back. We need to make sure people see what we already know - that Zion is a great church home!

Each crew is made up of both people who have served in these hospitality roles already in the past, and others who are new to this ministry area, led by two families. The First Sunday crew (who will serve the first Sunday of each month) is led by Karie and Brian, along with Terry and Russ Peterson, and served for the first time on September 7. With all the extra things going on for Homecoming Sunday, there were a few surprises, but the crew was able to work through them all and the morning went well.

All in all - it went great! The experienced volunteers were wonderful in sharing their knowledge and information with everyone. Our team was really ready to take it all on. I really enjoyed the entire experience. But mostly I enjoyed the opportunity to see faces I have not seen for a while and to connect with some new people! People are very receptive to a smile and a warm greeting.

(Karie Bruder continued from page 4)

There were people opposed to that and people happy about that and some in the middle so it all had to be worked out. As Kenneth Johnson said at that time, “The building is not the church, the people are the church.”

Darrell’s longest running volunteer involvement is with the annual Lutefisk dinner, which he has been involved with for 25 years. He has made meatballs every year, peeled rutabagas, sold tickets, and now serves as host.

Darrell is interested in the history of the church. He was involved with events for the 100-year and 125-year anniversaries, and hopes to be involved in the 150-year anniversary of Zion in 2016. One highlight of the 100-year anniversary in 1966 was a pageant, with the first act in Swedish. The pageant was put on again in 1991, but entirely in English.

Karleen died of cancer 16 years ago, and granddaughter Ashley passed away last year.

Darrell is looking forward to his upcoming 64th class reunion, and says that of his graduating class of 42, 24 are still living and try to attend reunions.

Thanks to Lynn Ogden for help with this story.
