OCTOBER 2014 Letter from the president: Greetings and Happy October! We had a great turnout for Alfredo’s workshops last month and it was nice to see students of all ages in attendance. It was a good reminder of what I love about being a harpist- the endless possibilities to learn and explore the instrument with new perspectives, regardless of age or level. With that in mind, I hope many of you can attend the masterclass and concert with Alice Giles this month. We are so lucky to be visited by a world-class teacher and truly inspiring performer. I hope you plan to come to our annual fall meeting that will take place right before the masterclass! See the Calendar for locations, times, etc. Events like these are what make our chapter such an amazing resource for all of us. 1. ITʼS ALICE TIME!! What a great time to be a harpist in Seattle! Just a few weeks after Alfredoʼs September visit, primo Australian harpist Alice Giles is coming on October 18 and 19. Right after our fall meeting (1:00) sheʼll give a master class on Saturday afternoon (2:30) at the University of Puget Sound, and a concert Sunday night in Lagerquist Concert Hall at Pacific Lutheran University. Please see calendar for more details. Alice is also available for private lessons before or after the class at UPS on Saturday, or on Sunday either at Pat Wooster's house or at PLU. To sign up to take part in the Master class or arrange for a private lesson, please contact Pat at: [email protected], or call her at 253-862-3400. The fee to participate in the Master class is $50; to audit (observe) the class is $25. The cost for private lessons is $100. Please contact Pat if you have any questions. (For directions, see last page.) At Aliceʼs concert on Sunday, Oct. 19, she will play the following in the first half: J. S. Bach - Suite BWV 996 e minor Trans. A. Giles Five Poetic Studies for Harp Alone Carlos Salzedo Ballade op. 28 Carlos Salzedo Turkey Strut - Concert Fantasy on Turkey in the Straw Carlos Salzedo The second half will be unusual: A multimedia presentation describing her journey to Antarctica in 2011.

2. What if there were no chapter? No website? No Resonance? No annual regulations? No adjudications? No visits by wonderful harpists? No scholarships? The chapter exists for and because of its members. Please join today while youʼre thinking of it. Itʼs all online now – no more finding stamps and envelopes – at www.ahsseattle.org. Do it now and save our new membership chairs from having to call you. Thank you!! 3. The Vancouver (WA) Symphony Orchestra is looking for entrants to its 21st annual Young Artists competition. Open to those 18 or younger on January 1, 2015 and studying with a private music instructor. You must prepare one movement (no longer than 15 minutes) of a standard concerto for harp, but first you have to get the approval for the selection from the VSO, no later than the end of October. Read more about it and for rules and entry form at http://www.vancouversymphony.org/YoungArtists.php. Thanks, Marcia Stromquist, for the heads-up!

The presentation will include a talk by Alice accompanied by video and audio footage of her performances in Antarctica. “The impulse and reason for my journey to Antarctica was my grandfather Cecil T. Madigan. When I discovered that my cousin Julia Butler was in the process of editing his AAE diaries it was natural to wish to incorporate excerpts, especially those that mention the music he loved and experienced on his expedition one hundred years ago. The program came about by gradually pulling those elements together, along with the new works especially written by Australian composers.” Concert is free but donations will be gladly accepted.(For driving directions, see last page.)

4. John Carrington, how did you start the harp?

As early as I can remember I have wanted to play the harp. It must be in my Celtic heritage! At the Ballard church I grew up in, the organist's daughter, Diane Doerflein, was a harpist who studied with Lynne Palmer. She played the harp every Sunday and I remember staring at it in awe every week when I was 4 years old. Since my family owned a clarinet, that was the instrument I started on in the 3rd grade Seattle Public Schools program. I switched to oboe in Junior High and joined the Seattle Youth Symphony program. When we were finishing up rehearsal in the Little Youth Symphony I'd see two harpists loading in for Junior Youth Symphony rehearsal. I quickly befriended them and it re-ignited my passion for the harp. A family from my church, whose two daughters studied harp, miraculously sponsored me when I was 15.

They knew I had a talent for music and a love for the harp so they restrung their Troubadour harp, had me accepted for private lessons at the UW with Pamela Vokolek and offered to pay for my lessons if needed! Mrs. Vokolek took me on a trial basis since I had no piano background and I worked hard and was driven to succeed so I wouldn't miss my big chance. (John is playing a world premiere on January 18 – see Calendar.) 5. Do you play “The Angelʼs Carol” by John Rutter? Pat Jaeger has removed the grand staff and made the harp part only four pages with enough text to follow along. This reduces it from 11 pages and hard page turns what with the continuous eighth-note harp part. She would be glad to share it with you by sending you the PDFs, although she suggests that you should have the whole part for dynamics, etc. Sheʼs at [email protected]. 6. Where are they now? Casey Pinckneyʼs folks, Chuck and Janet, report that Casey “is attending grad school at Colorado State University and is currently teaching calculus classes and of course taking a full load of graduate level courses towards her PhD in pure math while pursuing her goal of becoming a college math professor. She has a harp with her and hopefully will be able to find time for some plucking!” Joseph Lachman spent 2012-13 in Japan learning about its language, history and culture, and after his junior year at Yale returned to Japan this past summer. He decided to major in the History of Science and Medicine. Now heʼs in his senior year and considering graduate programs toward a PhD either in his major or in East Asian Studies. He says he keeps his fingers strong by playing piano. 7. Pat Jaeger wrote up her notes from Alfredo Ortizʼ workshops. Ask her for them at [email protected]. (Holiday riddle: How do you fix a broken Jack-o-lantern? With a pumpkin patch! (Thanks to Trader Joe.)

FUN STUFF Harpists and monkey business arenʼt usually thought of as a duo. Check out this video, though: Harpistʼs playing makes zoo apes ʻpurrʼ at http://metronews.ca/scene/1165717/harpists-mellow-tone-soothes-apes-at-st-paul-zoo/ What do you get if you cross a grizzly bear and a harp? A bear-faced lyre! What do you call a cow that plays the harp? A moo-sician There was once a corpulent carp Who wanted to play on a harp, But to his chagrin, So short was his fin, He couldn't reach up to C sharp. (Edward Lear)
