The “new technology” is satellite navigation co-ordinates fed directly into the aircraft computer. It issimilar to the methods used in vehicle sat-navs.By law, the airport has to consult the localcommunity before permanently altering its flight-path policy.Far from reducing the flights flying over HatfieldHeath it has concentrated more flights to bedirectly over us.Take off is the most noisiest and puts the greateststrain on a plane, as it is full of fuel and needs a lotof power for lift off. Why not go further to thesouthern end of the existing swathe ( as I haveshown on map below) and miss the villagecompletely.Bruno

The Parish council already considers itwas misled over the trial of the RNPI SIDCentre line on the Clacton Route especiallyin terms of what a centre line meant. Thenext move is to change the Dover Routedepartures so they are on the Clacton Routeas well. This will mean a quadrupling of thenoise over our village. This is unacceptableand can not be part of any sustainableplanning. If the technology is now so good whycan't it be used to vary the airplanes coursewithin the 3km corridor so that no one place iscontinually affected. Thus every day a differentcourse could be flown. Please object in writing or on- line and attendthe consultation meeting.

NEW INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY TOREDUCE THE IMPACT OF AIRCRAFT NOISE
ON COMMUNITIES AROUNDSTANSTED AIRPORT
PERFORMANCE BASED
NAVIGATIONNew innovative technology to reduce the
impact of aircraft noise onCommunities around Stansted AirportWHAT ARE THE MAIN CHANGESAND WHO WILL BE AFFECTED?
The new navigation technology helps departingaircraft to keep closer to two of our existing flightpaths, reducing the number of people who areoverflown by aircraft.
Figures 1 and 2 show the areas of over flying bothbefore (1) and after (2) the trial from ‘runway 22Clacton NPR’. As demonstrated in the secondimage, the number of people being overflown byaircraft in Hatfield Heath, Hatfield Broad Oak andLittle Hallingbury is reduced significantly as a resultof the trial.

THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETYIn September, twentymembers of the HundredParishes Society were led bychairman Douglas Kent andsecretary Ken McDonald on aguided walk from Newport toWendens Ambo. Douglas andKen shared some fascinatingdetails about the history of the older listed buildings, pointing out the skills of past builders and carpentersand the challenges placed upon successive ownerswho have occupied and cherished these buildingsover many centuries. The walkers enjoyed the viewsfrom the footpath between Newport and WendensAmbo, across the Cam valley towards Shortgroveand the distant spire of Saffron Walden’s parishchurch. The group was ready for lunch at the FightingCocks..Getting out and about provides us with theopportunity to appreciate the variety of autumnalcolours in gardens, parks and the wider countrysideas the deciduous trees prepare to shed their leaves.Do try one or more of the recommended walksdescribed on our website:www.hundredparishes.org.uk. .At this time of the year gardens too offer seasonalcharms. Our website’s What’s On page shows thefinal day for visiting the Gardens of Easton Lodge isOctober 18 from 11:30am to 5pm, whilst a walkaround your own local area can reveal surprisinglycolourful plantings too! As winter approaches, thereare fewer outdoor activities, but our What’s On lists agood variety of events around the area includingwalks, talks and evening concerts in great venuesand for good causes. .Should the weather be unsuitable for outdoorexcursions then there are a couple of exhibitionsworth viewing in Saffron Walden. The Fry Art Galleryfeatures "The Art of Acquisition - the Great Bardfieldartists' houses" until 25th October, whilst SaffronWalden Museum has: "Uttlesford: a Community ofCollectors". BONFIRE NIGHTBack in the fifties bonfire night was somethingof a village occasion it would all begin mid tolate September with two rival bonfires one onBroomfields and one on Ardley Cresent, lateryears we combined to build one on the Heath infront of the school until it was sabotaged byraiders from Sheering who lit it two weeks early. We would borrow large hand carts from localbuilder E E Hockey and with scant regard forhealth and safety and the environment gatherdead wood and fell growing trees in an attemptto build the biggest fire garden rubbish and oldfurniture were also dumped on the fire and justprior to the night we would go round cadgingnewspaper and paraffin to light the fire. The fireswere a great attraction with fireworks let offvery random with only minor incident andoccasionally fireworks thrown into the gardensof the less sociable. All good youthful fun with great communityspiritDave

September 15.Footpaths of Hatfield Heath
An informative talk by Stella and Ian Hughes on the‘Footpaths of Hatfield Heath’ defined a historical andcurrent perspective. An introductory opening of theirpersonal involvement in walking was supported by aseries of photographs. These covered trips taken locally, nationally and internationally demonstrating an interestand commitment which is inherent in the work which theyare carrying out as our Footpath Wardens. The background to how footpaths provided a commuterroute between farms and villages and the effect of the18/19 Century enclosure acts was described in somedetail. An evening divided into a number of parts includedreferences to signage, types of rights of way and the use oflocal authority maps. Using a range of dated maps toillustrate footpath details reflecting interestingcomparisons of how some footpaths appeared to havechanged. The maintenance responsibilities of footpaths forCouncils, Farmers and Walkers was highlighted anddetailed maps of local routes shown. Four compass pointsof Hatfield Heath footpaths generated facts and figures tothis extent. The Parish Paths Partnership was describedwith reference to a calendar of meetings and furtherarrangements. This also applied to a series of plannedwalks, two have already been explored and printed in themagazine and on the Parish Council website definingroutes and places of interest along the way.The detailed work produced for these maps issymptomatic of the way in which Stella and Ian haveapproached the importance that they place upon theirappointment as Wardens. A vote of thanks from themeeting was given by the Chairman with a session ofquestions to conclude the evening.Ivan Cooper

WINDOWS ON THE PAST
A sequel to VJ Day CommemorationsA feature of the VJcommemorations waslighting the beacon.Symptomatic of eventswhich took place across thecountry in 1946 celebratingthe final victory of WW2.Itwas a privilege for theVillage to invite localresident Jim Pike, a wartimenavy veteran, to light it. Jim joined the navy in 1941 atthe age of 18 and after 3 months training in Cornwall wasposted to Chatham Barracks. Previous knowledgeworking on engines led to a course at Pontefract which hepassed as a Leading Hand. He returned to Chatham andwas placed on an overseas draft but decided to bring hismarriage forward before embarking on the Cape TownCastle sailing to Bombay (now Mumbai). Transferred toan LCT 384 and promoted to Petty Officer. (LCT 384 aLanding Craft Tank built in Middlesbrough and launchedin 1942 with a Crew of 28). Sailed from Bombay to thetip of India forming part of a combined task forceintending to invade Japan. However the bombing ofHiroshima and Nagasaki brought an end to hostilities. His ship then took part in liberating and repatriatingPrisoners of War from Changi jail, men who had workedon the notorious Burma railway. He vividly remembershaving to ration food to those rescued who had beenemaciated during captivity. His ship went fromSingapore to the Dutch East Indies where he was attachedto the Aircraft Carrier, HMS Indomitable returning to theBritish Isles via Colombo, Aden and Gibraltar in 1945.He was demobbed in 1946 and after the war set up abuilding business partnership Fordham and Pike. Acontract with Dove Brothers provided a most interestingjob putting a new lift shaft in St Pauls Cathedral (1972)using engineering principles not relying on a bricklayer’slevel. Work followed for Copes Bank (Edward Heathlaying the Foundation Stone), 11 blocks of flats inTottenham, a Synagogue in a garden in Romford, pubsand all sorts. Lived in Leyton and Woodford Greenfinally moving to Hatfield Heath some 8 years ago.

78 and Still Running!Judy Burston, 78, from Basildon is the oldestrunner entering the Chelmsford Marathon in2015, trying for a 'Good for Age ' place in the2017 London marathon when she'll be 80.“I started running when I was 44 but had a break for several years due to a knee injury, restarting at the age of 58. Ihad watched the first Londonmarathon in 1981 on thetelevision and was reallymoved by the commitment ofthe competitors andatmosphere of the event –when even the 2 winnerscame in holding hands, which says a lot about therunning fraternity. I told myfamily and friends that if Icould get in I would do thatrace the next year (1982). I knew nothingabout long distance runningexcept that to do that distance in a reasonable time you’ve got to put in a lot of training and Ihad 12 months. The weather for the secondLondon marathon was perfect for running andalong with 17,000 other runners I lined up forthe start. It was an amazing experience and at45 years old I came in at 3hrs 34mins.” Judyuses her marathon running to fund raise forcharity – focusing on online giving from friendsand acquaintances. Her training regime isanything but strict; she simply found out whatworked for her and sticks to it!“My most extraordinary, stimulating, emotional and mind-blowing experience was TheHimalayan 100 mile Stage Race which takesplace over 5 days. If anyone is thinking aboutdoing an ultra race of this sort I’d say ‘Go forit’.At 69, I was the oldest competitor but I still finished in 31hrs 20mins. HATFIELD HEATH WALKS
WALK 3: Village Hall to ArdleyEnd
Length: 2.5 km (1.5 miles)Duration: approx. 1 hThis walk uses definitive paths and stretches ofroads with pavements. Suitable footwear Shouldbe worn. Two stiles are crossed (3) and (4), butthese can be bypassed by walking directly from (2)to (7) along Pond Lane.
This is the third in a series of walks that explore the footpaths of the Parish of Hatfield Heath. Points of interest alongthe way are indicated in the text with an i symbol. Each walk starts from a location around the circumference of thevillage green, and being circular in nature could be joined at any convenient point. For other walks and furtherinformation about the village visit: www.hatfieldheath.com
The walk begins at the Village Hall car park(1). From here head north-west, crossing theentrance to Broomfields estate, then cross theStortford Road opposite to Little Eden (2).i Village Hall: Built in 1970 on the site of the former Parish Hall, known as Trinity Hall, which itself was opened in 1894.i Little Eden: Dating from the mid-seventeenth century, Little Eden was originally a farm. On the
1838 Tithe Map it was known as Hockleys.
Follow the finger post across the green to theleft of Little Eden, climb over the stile (3)continue straight ahead across the unevenpasture to an opening in the far corner (4).
15
Cross the wooden bridge and second stile thenturn sharp left through a kissing gate andaround the edge of a paddock. On your leftamongst a collection of industrial units is awooden barn bearing a notice “LicensedSlaughterhouse” – this was once one of twoestablished butchers business on the Heath.
Pass through a second kissing gate (5) andfollow the path until it exits onto SheeringRoad (6), when you should turn left along thepavement towards the village and cross theSheering Road before its junction with PondLane(7).
Here you will see two fingerposts – take theroute to the left, through the metal gate andfollow the path until it emerges to an openarea. Beyond the gateway on your left youcan see a few derelict brick structures whichwere once associated with Davies Row. Theovergrown patch of land on your right is thesite of a former farm building and cattlesheds.
i Davies Row: A terrace of old cottages built at right angles to the road were demolished in the late 1930’s.
Keep straight ahead with the field boundary onyour left.
Keep following the boundary until an opening onthe left (8) reveals a wooden footbridge (justbefore the houses) which you cross and continuebehind the houses of Ardley Crescent until theMatching Road is reached by crossing anotherwooden footbridge (9). Cross the road and turnOn your left are Bentley Villas (1931) and to theright is Ardley Crescent (1938), the constructionof which allowed condemned buildings at DavisRow to be demolished.
These developments and the newer houses thatflank the Matching Road conceal the fact that thecottages at Ardley End (junction with Friars Lane)were not long ago quite a separate community –indeed it did not receive electricity supplies until1953.
Shortly after the EIIR lamp box, cross theMatching Road opposite the finger post at (10)and follow the path where it turns to the right infront of some stables. Follow the path around theedges of the paddock. The metal fence running
parallel on your left in the distance surrounds thesewage works. On the horizon you can see thewater tower at Church Langley. Afterthepaddock, turn right and follow the fieldedge.Almost immediately on your right, hiddenamongst the trees is a pond, often dry inthe summer months. This is one ofmany ponds around the village, some moreevident than others (a few are marked onthis map).
i Sewage Works: Built to treat the material fromthe new main sewerage system laid on in the villagein 1935.
i Water Tower: Built in 1994 for the newdevelopment of Church Langley, and with aCapacity of almost half a million gallons, the watertower is often the scene of charitable abseiling
events.Continue along the field edge and turn right a(12) heading due north. Continue straight on at(13) crossing a wooden bridge over a ditch andfollow the narrow path (beware of thebarbed wire) until an opening is reached.Cross to the northwest corner, along the sideof Blaisdon Lodge and after closing thewooden gate behind you, follow the drivewayback towards the road.
Cross the road and follow Pond Lane. Justbefore an oak tree, there is a path on the rightleading to an information board beside one ofthe ponds.Return to Pond Lane, passing the smallcomplex of shops and units at Reynolds (14),then turn right across the Heath towards asecond information board. At the board turnleft alongside the churchyard and over the roadto reach the end of this walk (1).
i Holy Trinity Church: The Parish Church was built in 1859. The current peal of six lightweight bells
was recast from the metal of the three originalbells in 1961.
We gratefully acknowledge the input wereceived from Liz Wright whilst writing thiswalk, and for information sourced from “AHistory of Hatfield Heath”, 1999.

Rainfallmm
Total for month92.25mm
(3.63 inches)
August 2015, in the country as a whole, it was thewettest month of August on record. We recordedfifteen raindays, with a total of 3.36 inches, which is56% higher than of 3.63 inches, which is 56%higher tha our August average.August ExtremesHigh 5.73 inches in 2011 5.20 inches in 2014Low 0.24 inches in 1995 031 inches in 2003
2015 has been a record year in respect of yields fromBroadbeans, spinach and and figs. In respect of thefruit, excellent crops of Blackcurrants, Raspberriesand Greengages, where the wasps did oblige. Wewere surprised to see bumper crops to be harvestedfrom the apples. Disovery as usual again producedits early crop and harvest was complete by the end ofJuly. Bramleys, Cox and Braeburn will be ready inSeptember and October.Self sown Borage plants have been numerous thisyear, attracting all pollinating insects. During themonth, Germa wasps took over from the BumbleBees on these plants. It was also very interesting tosee them collecting pollen from the sweet cornplants.During the month we had a visit from twoRhododendron Leafhopper, which dropped in fromnext door, into a bucket of water. Fortunately I waspassing at the time and was pleased to rescue them.Brian Bland

1. Mini roundabout scheme A1060/B183 junction. This scheme has gone through the Local Highways Panel (LHP) and funding has been Allocated for construction in this financial year subject to any unforeseen technical reasons.
2. Revised junction Stortford RoadA1060/Sawbridgeworth Road.
This scheme is in detailed design stage and two alternatives are expected to be completed by end
of September and presented to the Parish Council For approval. There is no construction funding for this project in this financial year.3. Speed limit Sheering to Hatfield Heath. It is thought unlikely that this stretch of road will
meet the criteria for a 40mph limit, but EJ will ask to review the reasons for the refusal.
4. Pedestrian Crossing in centre of Hatfield Heath This scheme was previously refused as not meeting the criteria for pedestrian crossings. ML
advised the meeting that the Parish Council were about to install hard standing alongside Church
Road on The Heath to provide additional car parking. This will allow parents to park in order to drop off children to the school and this will increase the number of children crossing the road to get to school. This has been agreed with the
Lord of the Manor. ML asked as an alternative to a pedestrian crossing, to have traffic light controlled crossing as in Sheering. The response is that this type of crossing requires a higher set of criteria than a pedestrian crossing so would be
unlikely to succeed if the pedestrian crossing also failed. Parish Council are to submit a further
application to the LHP when the car parking installation is completed. If either crossing were
to be approved, street lighting would be necessary. Alternative suggestion from ECC was to approach school to fund a school crossing
patrol. ML will raise this with the Head Teacher ifcrossings are refused. It was also acknowledgedthat street lighting will be required for bothschemes outlined in Items 1 & 2

5. Pedestrian safety on service road outside The Stag,The Heath. This issue is one of safety to pedestrians, many of whom have been struck by vehicles mountingthe pavement to squeeze past parked cars alongsidethe island. The issue of ownership of the island remainsparamount to resolving this issue. Prior to theresolution of ownership, ECC agreed to look intosuitable remedial works assuming that eventuallyownership is resolved with either the Lord of the Manorobtaining ownership or the possibility of ECC adoptingthe island. One potential concern is if the island isreduced by too much, it creates a safety issue of driversand passengers alighting from parked cars alongsidethe island being closer to the A1060.
6.Dislodged kerbstones, Broomfields This is currently being looked at by LHP for widening the road and resetting the kerbstones on a more substantial basis.
7.Dislodged kerbstones road across cricket field, TheHeath to Ardley End ECC Agreed to have thekerbstones removed by the Highway Rangers
8.Numerous potholes A1060 Stortford Road The potholesare the result of a defective top coat of tarmac and thisis scheduled to be completely removed and resurfacedby end of December 2015
1482. VILLAGE GREEN Works to Church Road car park may need planning permission and will need permission from Lord of the Manor Quotation received of £13600 for preparing car park area with grid with grass infill seeded.

A Message fromStewart Gibbs
It is with regret that I have steppeddown as Vicar of Holy Trinitywith effect from September. Ithas been a great privilege servingas minister here. I have had thejoy of working with somewonderful people.
I move to work as a teacher of Classics atBrentwood School. This will give me more timeto devote to my work at St. Mellitus College.and to support my wife, Sam, in her own newphase of ministry.
In due course I will become assistant minister inSam’s parishes.

Our much loved calendar illustrates the beauty, diversity and heritage of the area which would be
threatened by proposals to expand Stansted Airport
