October’s walk through the theological alphabet takes us to the letter “I”, and we will dwell on the word and concept of incarnation. When we break up the word literally, from the old Latin, we get in, and caro, or carnis, meaning flesh, so, ‘in the flesh’ would be a good working definition of incarnation. The incarnation of Jesus is elemental to Christian belief. God sent his son, Jesus, in human flesh. Theologians say Jesus was fully human and fully divine. Jesus, in human flesh is the second part of the Trinity, the three-fold mystery of our God.We sing of the incarnation of Jesus in our Christmas carols:

Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ the ever-lasting Lord; late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the God-head see; hail the incarnate Deity; pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King.

And Emmanuel, Emmanuel, his name is called Emmanuel.God with us, revealed in us, his name is called Emmanuel.

When we say The Nicene Creed, we recite: “For us and our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.”God loves us so much as to send to humanity a part of him so we could see what God’s love looks like in human skin, so we could be saved from our sins and redeemed into life eternal. Because of Jesus’ incarnation, we can be comfortable bringing our whole bodies to church, not our minds alone. Human bodies became temples, or worshipful places, when Jesus took on human form. There is nothing innately sinful about the human body. We can remember it’s our free will that gets us in trouble, not necessarily our body. Because Jesus came as a human baby, we can delight in babies and youngsters wiggling and chattering in church.

COMING IN OCTOBER: Children’s Sabbath, October 9. A celebration of the children and youth in our midst.

Trevor Powell will be bringing the message that Sunday. The church will give Bibles to all third graders, and older children who may have missed receiving a Bible. Please contact the church office or Pastor Edrye (231-459-5223) if you know of a child who would appreciate a Bible.

Electronic Tithing Coming Soon to Coldwater UMC

Many of you already pay most of your bills electronically and seldom write checks anymore. Over the last couple of years, we have had many requests to set up electronic giving for your donations to church. We have found a system that appears to work simply and offers many benefits to our members and the church.

The benefits to our members: 1. A safe, secure and convenient way to tithe 2. The ability to budget tithes 3. Absentee tithing while on vacation or ill 4. No hassle of writing checks

The benefits to our church: 1. Stabilized income/cash flow 2. Funds safely directed from giver to church account

Here is how it works:You authorize regularly scheduled donations from your checking or savings account. You will be debited the amount you have authorized at the frequency you designate—weekly or monthly. The debit for your donation will appear on your bank statement as “Donation”.

We will have “Donation Authorization” forms available on the table outside Friends Place. The forms can be filled out and returned to the office—the information will be kept in a secure location. If you have questions, you may ask me or Bonnie or a member of the Teller team. Ruth Proctor, Finance Chm

I will be retiring from my position as Administrative Assistant as of November 30, 2016. I have enjoyed working with you for the last 8 years, but it is time to move on and do some things that I want to do. (I have a bucket list and yes it includes some Nascar Races.) I have also been serving as the church treasurer and will

be retiring from that position as well. I plan to spend some time in Arizona with my family as well as other travels. I will still be around to serve as Altar Steward along with my great helper and friend Diane Godfrey and probably a few other volunteer jobs.

I have been attending here since 1975, you can’t get rid of me that easily. God Bless You All Bonnie Robison

The auction is coming.  October 2, 2016 after second service there will be the always popular potato bar followed by the auction.  A little different this year.  The silent auction will feature foods and mixes.  If you donate a mix, please include the instructions.  Baked good always go well.  We have nice items for the live auction. Swiss steak Dinner for six by Cork and Dave, Brunch for eight by the Bercaw’s and Zeluff’s, A depression style ladies luncheon for eight by Kay Dirschell, Presidential dinner by the Rowland's and Shenefield’s (this is a repeat from last year that received rave reviews.)A day on the lake for up to ten people includes pontoon rental, a beach bag and beach supplies.  Holidays are excluded.A Detroit Tigers Blanket made by Allie Aker A beautiful handmade necklace by Bente Howe, A green and white handmade afghan by Marianne Hodson, A progressive dinner by Sherry Dart, Mike and Nancy Davis, and John and Joan Rohloff, Michigan Products basket by the O’Leary’s, A pie a month by Bonnie Robison, Ron and Kay Bercaw are doing a spring garden planter by Neitzert's.  Always a good time and the money goes to mission projects supported by our church.  Come and enjoy a fun afternoon with your church family.

The Albion District is donating $100.00 in seed money for the children in Flint and we are to use it in some way to multiply it. We will use the $100.00 as a starter and encourage. Because of the rainy weather at Apple Fest, and poor attendance, we have set our water filter pitcher out each Sunday on the desk in the entry way. Please drop your loose change into the pitcher or water jug as you walk by the desk.

We will also be doing the Christmas bags again.  Kay and Ann will shop and get an estimate of the cost and if you are a snowbird or unable to shop for yourself, you may contact them and they will shop for you.  This is a much appreciated gift to recipients of Meals On Wheels.

It's that time of the year to plan ahead if you are an M & M volunteer leaving for the winter to warmer climate. Talk to your team leader or cook and make arrangements for your replacement .

"Your service in mission is a beautiful thing and we are so blessed to be able to continue serving.  We have 6 amazing teams that work together to feed the hungry. (Average 65-90 per week) If you would like to join one of our teams or sign up to be a substitute please call Bill or Jan Robinson.

Let the “The Traveling Communion Team” know if you would like them to serveCommunion to you or a loved one on the First Sunday of the month or any day of the following week. Call Carol Tinervia, (517) 278-7770, if you would like to have communion in your home.

Lay Servant Ministries classes are intended to strengthen leaders in the local congregation.  Classes cover a wide range of topics – everything from caregiving to hospitality to worship leadership to the Bible and much more.  So mark October 7 and 8, 2016, at Wesley Woods in your calendar.  Hold that weekend

open if possible so that you can take one of the classes that will be offered.  (FYI: please register in a timely manner.  Due to the process of ordering books and preparing before the class, late registration are not allowed – which unfortunately sometimes leads to the cancellation of classes.)  So many people ask

me, “What can I do to help my church?”  THIS IS SOMETHING YOU CAN DO!  Develop your leader-ship skills for use in your church.  Strengthen the talents, gifts and passions God is asking you to bring to your church.  Allow God to bless you through the Lay Servant class and through your Lay Servant class-mates – so that you can be an even better blessing of God “back home” as you minister to people who still

don’t know about Jesus and his love for them!

Access your news on our Web Site @ www.coldwaterumc.org. If you wish a paper copy you can pick one up here at the church after

the last Thursday of the month.

Daylight savings time ends on Sunday, November 6th.Be sure to set your clocks back 1 hour before you goto bed on Saturday night.

Looking at the calendar summer has ended and Fall is upon us. It’s also time to get your flu shot. The CDC recommends that you get your flu shot between now and before the end of October for optimal coverage and everyone 6 months and older should receive a vaccination. I get a Flu shot yearly and hope you do too. But if you don’t, what’s your reason why you don’t? Below, are some myths that are spread each year that detour folks from being vaccinated. Are you one of them?Myth #1: The Flu shot can give you the flu. The vaccine is made from a dead or inactive virus which can no longer give its fever like properties. Some folks may have an allergic reaction to the site of injection or a low grade fever but these reactions are not the Flu. It is recommended if you are allergic to eggs or have a history of Guillan-Barre Syndrome not to have the Flu vaccine. Myth #2: You are guaranteed to be Flu-free if you have had the Flu shot. You are only 60% protected according to the CDC. You may be exposed to the Flu in the two weeks it takes for the vaccine to take effect. Or you might be exposed to a strain not covered in the vaccine. Myth #3: Antibiotics can fight the Flu. Antibiotics fight bacteria, not viruses. The Flu and a cold are viruses. Tamiflu and Relenza are the antivirals that can treat the Flu.Myth #4: The stomach Flu is a type of influenza. Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea is called the “stomach flu.” This is not typical of the “seasonal Flu.” The vaccine is for the respira-tory symptoms. You may have these issues but they won’t usually be the “main” symp-toms if you have the “seasonal Flu”.Myth #5: You can get the Flu by being outside in the cold without a coat or have wet hair. The only way you can get the Flu is to come in contact with the virus that causes it. Myth #6: If you’re young and healthy, you do not need the shot. Young and healthy adults aren’t urged to get vaccinated, like pregnant women, folks over 65 and those with

chronic conditions. But if young folks get vaccinated the fewer cases of flu will be passed around. Please get your Flu shot soon and encourage others to do the same.
