Rector's Reflections
Stewarding
We are in that season of the year when churches across the country invite their parishioners to make a financial pledge towards the church's budget for the coming year. The churchy word for this is Stewardship, because we see this pledge as being tied to the care and distribution (the "stewarding") of the resources with which God has blessed us.
This can be a hard point to make in this day and age when we are hammered with messages from all sides that tell us we deserve what we have and it is ours to do with as we like. God tends to drop out of these messages while ideas for buying happiness or safety or indulgence crowd in.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with enjoying ourselves--even Jesus saved the wedding party by turning water into wine. At the same time, though, we are called as Christians to practice gratitude to God for the bounty in our lives and to give back because "from everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required" (Luke 12:48).
As we enter this process, bear in mind that a pledge is your best estimate of what you will be able to give. It is spiritually good for us to fulfill such a commitment, but it is not set in stone. If circumstances change, you can always inform the office that your giving will have to go down…or up!
Also, note a change in our campaign: as stewards of our own resources, we will be forgoing the usual brochure mailing. Instead, this year, our stewardship chair, Sara Eziuka, will offer brief, 15-minute presentations after the 8:00 service on October 22 and after 10:30 on October 8 and 22.
Pledge cards will be mailed out mid-month. We ask you to come to church on October 29 hav-ing prayed and discerned what your pledge will be and ready to fill it out in worship. (If you won't be in church that day, feel free to send or bring the pledge early.)
There is much the church is able to accomplish with our faithful donation as we practice this an-cient discipline of giving in gratitude for what God has given us.
Peace,
Pastor Ian

Children’s Ministries
October 2017
We are now a
month into our third
year of the Whirl curric-
ulum and there are a
few awesome features
of this program that I
would like to remind
you of.
First, it is lectionary
based which means we
are hearing one of the
same readings during
Sunday School, as the
adults are hearing in
church.
Second, the sheets
that the kids come up
to church with have 7
different ideas on each
to reinforce the lesson
at home during the
week. The children’s
bulletin that we pass
out also has more ac-
tivities around the les-
son we learned.
Finally, class is
more fun with friends.
Please consider invit-
ing a friend to come to
church with you.
Parents, want to see
and hear more about
what will be happening
in Children’s worship?
The doors are always
open for you to join us.
We are split into 3
classrooms. Ages 3-
Kindergarten will be in
the room closest to the
nursery. Grades 1-2
will be in the center
room and Grades 3 - 6
will be in the room 5.

Thank you to all who have supported Heif-er Project this sum-mer. We will be choosing an animal to donate in late Octo-ber.
October 29 from 3-5pm will be hosting a Halloween Trunk or Treat for
the community. It will feature decorated trunks, goodies, food and
drinks.
To make this afternoon a great success, we need your help, a sign up
sheet will be posted outside the Chil-
dren’s Worship room, we need people
to help by decorating their car trunks
and passing out candy and trinkets (the
Children’s Worship program will pro-
vide these), directing traffic, grilling hot
dogs, serve food and clean up.
Thank you in advance for all your help.

Important Dates
Thank You
This is a huge Thank You to Tommy Smith for adding an elec-trical outlet to one of the youth room walls that was without power!
The Gathering is a huge 3 day youth event put on by the Living Waters Minis-
tries in cooperation with the Episcopal Dioceses. The dates December 27—
30, 2017 at the Radisson Lansing. Rebellion is the theme, of this 3 days filled
with worship, small groups, service projects, speakers, music and tons of oth-
er activities. The cost is $100 for Trinity Youth and registration is due to Mar-
tha by November 1, 2017. Check out www.elcalivingwaters.com to learn
more.
After meeting with the youth and parents, some changes have been
made to the youth program. They will be meeting after church on the
first and third Sundays of the month. One week will be an activity and
the other Sunday will consist of a lesson which the teens themselves
will lead. A couple parents will be there each week as support. This is
a big responsibility that the youth are taking on to prepare to guide the
lessons each week. Youth and parents, please remember to check
your email for updates and keep the dates from the Bell handy.
Happening
Happening is open to high school youth grades 9—12 and will be held
November 17—19 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Midland, MI.
Registrations are due by November 8, and can done online at
www.edomi.org, under the youth ministries tab.
If you have already attended Happening and would like to be on team,
please contact Eric Travis.
Youth Day

Johns Royal Oak. Contact Eric Travis or watch for details at
