Dear Public Radio 90 Members,Thank you for your continued support of WNMU, Pubic Radio 90.

I find myself reflecting back on this past year and am in awe of all of our members, listeners and supporters. You came through with financial support for Public Radio 90 during a world-wide pandemic that has affected us all personally, financially and emotionally. As we approach our first fundraising effort of our new fiscal year, I am again reaching out to ask you for your support during our Oktoberfest fundraising, which begins on October 5th and runs through October 14th.

During this past year, we have seen rising programming and services costs and have had to tighten up our staffing requirements. We work very hard to make sure that our funding is used to support our core tenet to educate, engage, enlighten and inform. We do this in a variety of ways from news reporting, interviews, arts and culture and other programs that you listen to each day. Programming is one of the largest cost factors in our operations and this is why we need you to continue to support Public Radio 90 through your contributions. Your contribution shows that you believe in the mission of Public Radio 90 and rely on the quality programming that you listen to every day. Be proud of your support--we stand on your shoulders every day.

Your contributions help to support the creative and entertaining locally produced programs like In the Pines; The Shuffle with Kurt Hauswirth; Sound Spectrum; and Weekday with Hans Ahlstrom. You also make it possible for Public Radio 90 to pay for NPR news programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered, which is often cost prohibitive for small market stations to air. I may not have mentioned your favorite program, but I’m sure that you have at least one favorite that you listen to every week. Because you have your favorites, please make sure to join us in membership by becoming a sustaining member, or contributing member today.

Public Radio 90 is here for you because of you…where else can you make a contribution, choose what you want to give, but still get top programs to listen to at anytime? Any contribution you can make at this time, even a small one, will make a big difference. Thank you again for your continued generosity and personal commitment to WNMU, Public Radio 90. Oktoberfest begins on October 5th and we are proud to work with you in making sure our community continues to benefit from the services of Public Radio 90…remember, we stand on your shoulders.

With sincere thanks,

Tammy Wixtrom Johnson

Meet Our Team:Kurt Hauswirth, Producer/HostKurt Hauswirth is the classical music host and producer at Public Radio 90. He also hosts a modern music program called The Shuffl e, and connects that with a local musician video interview series called The Local Spin. Outside of work, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, producing his own electropop music, running, and trying as many cold brew coffees as possible.

He lives in Marquette with his wife Abbey and son Graeme, and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He was born in Marquette and has been a Yooper his whole life. He holds a B.A. in Music Education and taught music for a few years, but when an opportunity to work at Public Radio 90 came along, he couldn’t resist. This is a return to the station for Kurt, as he worked here as a student while attending Northern Michigan University.

Kurt presents local arts and culture features as well as interviews with musicians, composers and authors. He’s the one to contact to schedule an interview, and he also assists in the training of student on-air board operators.

He looks forward to seeing what the future holds for Public Radio 90, and he’s glad to be a part of the team!

Third Thursday: Locals – Sons of Legend present Classic blues-based RockOctober 21 from 7–9 pm CT

Thanks to “The Legend,” rhythm guitarist Harley Davis Sr., Sons of Legend is influenced heavily by the blues, as well as hard rock/metal, southern rock and outlaw country. The Sons include Jay Davis and Chris West on lead guitar, Harley Jr. on rhythm guitar, Kirk Atanasoff on drums, Russ Fennick on bass and veteran blues harp player Rick Bailey. Jay, with his gritty rock style, and Rick, with his soulful blues style reminiscent of great blues musicians of the deep south, take turns singing lead. The combination of these influences as well as the diversity of the musicians produce a raucous yet fluent merg-ing of those styles into something uniquely called Sons of Legend.

Monday-Friday at 9am

Monday, October 4 through Friday, October 8, Michele Good reads A Begin-ner’s Guide to America by Roya Hakakian. Written as a “guide” for the newly arrived, and providing “practical information and advice,” Roya Hakakian, an immigrant herself, reveals what those who settle here love about the country, what they miss about their homes, the cruelty of some Americans, and the unceasing generosity of others.

Monday, October 11 through Friday, October 29, Norman Gilliland reads The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. In Oscar Wilde’s only novel, he forges a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young man in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a beau-tiful, young man named Dorian Gray, who in a fleeting moment wishes that he could have eternal youth and beauty while his recently painted portrait would age instead. His wish granted, he begins to descend into a life of crime and gross sensuality, while the portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world.
