Not a word about sin, unworthiness, or judgment. Carla felt as if a great light was shining inside her, and she went to bed and fell asleep immediately. The next morning Carla opened her Bible and read the words again. What struck her were the words “love your neighbor as yourself.” Carla equated self-love with selfishness and pride. If she didn’t love and accept herself, how could she love God or anyone else? So began a new path for Carla, in which she prayed gratefully every day for God’s love and made lists of all she was grateful for about herself. Step by step, she changed. L ove God with the whole of your being, and love your neighbor as you love yourself. We have heard these

words so many times before. How easy they are to say, and how difficult to do. Yet Jesus insists that all religious laws and rituals, the witness of holy people such as the prophets and saints and everything else we associate with faith, rests entirely on these two commandments. Not long ago, a woman named Carla could not sleep one night. She watched TV and then, still restless, she opened her Bible and came upon the two greatest commandments. She thought intently about Jesus’ words and realized, guiltily, how many things and people and issues often displaced God in her life. Because of health issues, she had recently lost about fifty pounds, but she still hid behind baggy clothes and believed herself not good enough. Complicating it all for Carla was a rather rigid religious upbringing, in which her parents had emphasized sin and a God who judges harshly. In the silence of the night, Carla looked again at Jesus’ words and saw the commandment was to love God, love neighbor, love self. The common thread was love. From our Pastor, Fr. Jack Sewell

O ne of St. Paul’s favorite topics is that of gifted-ness. The early Christian communities did not easily understand the elements of stewardship so Paul spent a great deal of time and energy to explain the nature of spiritual gifts in the life of the individual and in the life of the Body of

Christ—the Church. For Paul, the different gifts were manifestations of the richness of God’s glory. His pri-ority was to encourage the church members to discover their gifts, and to use them in service to one another. The mere possession and awareness of a spiritual gift didn’t guarantee anything. The gift had to be used for the good of others in order to be of everlasting value. One of the challenges is that we tend to prioritize gifts, spiritual or otherwise. We rate their relative value to us and to our community. In doing so, we establish a “greater” or “lesser” value to God’s gifts. Yet that is a fruitless exercise since our unique gifts are given in proportion to what Christ has decided and distributed. Do we really want to argue with Christ? Christ will not give us a worthless spiritual gift. Rather, his grace leads us to understand the gifts that we have, treasure them with gratitude, and inspire us to use them for the building up of the community of faith. The gifts we have reflect the depth of Christ’s love for us. He called his disciples to walk with him, to discover God’s presence in their lives, and to proclaim his love to all the nations. May we profess one Lord, one faith, and one baptism through the unique contributions each of us make to one another at Our Lady of Fatima Parish.

“Each of us has been given special gifts in proportion

to what Christ has given.”

(Ephesians 4:7)

Changes Coming to Masses in English You may have heard -- but not everyone has -- that there is a new edition of the Roman Missal. The Roman Missal is the book containing all the prayers for all the Masses throughout the year. As you may know, the Mass is officially in Latin, as it has been for several centuries. What we use is a translation of the Latin text into English. Beginning on the first Sunday of Advent this year (Nov 26/27), there will be a new translation in use in all English-speaking countries and parishes throughout the world. Since the method of translation is different in this new edition than in the present book, the Mass will sound quite different, even though it is essentially unchanged. New musical settings for the Gloria, Holy, Memorial Acclama-tions, and Lamb of God (as well as others, later on) will begin to appear in November. We will learn some new spoken responses, as well. And the priests will have an entirely new set of prayers for each and every Mass. For a change that doesn't really change anything, this change changes a lot...! Watch for bulletin inserts and special class sessions in the coming weeks to help you learn and understand what is com-ing. And let us keep our parish, our Church, and each other in prayer as we make this transition to a new text for the Mass we love.

Joining the Church - Adult Sacrament Preparation If you are not Catholic but would like to explore the idea of joining the Catholic Church, the RCIA is for you. Inquiry starts this coming Tuesday, where you can ask questions and learn some basics without making any immediate commitment. Modular 1, 7 - 8:30 pm. Contact Rick Hardy, [email protected] , for more information. Baptized Catholic but never really lived as a Catholic? RCIA for you! Reconnect and learn what you've been missing! See above for details. If you are Catholic and attend-ing Mass regularly, but were never confirmed, Adult Confirmation prepa-ration is for you. You'll start with the Inquiry Class this Tuesday (see above), then you'll move into your own group for specific Confirmation preparation.

¿Realmente queremos cuestionar a Cristo?
