Fr.. Jorge A. Roman In preparation of my First Communion, I had to memorize the Ten Commandments. At age six, because of my childhood innocence, I could not understand what they meant. In an ecumenical fellowship (in a Synagogue), in Mexico City, a Jew told me they had hundreds of laws they had to observe, and therefore, governed his life. I expressed how lucky I was to be Catholic. Warily, he asked me why I had said such a thing. I replied that I wasn't good at memorizing and that it took a lot of effort for me to remember the Ten Commandments. Surprised to hear this from a priest, he asked how I fulfill God's law, to which I replied that I cheated. I only recalled and tried to fulfill the following two: "Love God above all things" and "Love thy neighbor as yourself". If I comply with these two commandments, I comply all, as well as the hundreds of laws that the Jewish have. As Augustine says: “Love and do as you please”, because the one who loves, cannot sin, for sinning is the lack of love. We can say that we love God, but it seems that we do not love Him above all things. Especially if your favorite team is playing on Sunday, if you have planned a gathering with friends or family or you simply consider that it is enough to believe in God but it is not necessary to go to Mass. Surprisingly ... The Devil also believes in God and he goes to Mass. If someone says "I love God", yet hates his brother, he is a liar, for he that does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. (1 Jn_ 4, 20) Love for God begins in my neighbor: Lord, when we see You hungry and gave You food? or thirsty and gave You to drink? (38) When we saw You a stranger and welcomed You? or naked and clothe You? (39) Or when we saw You sick or in prison, and come to You? (40) in response, the King will say to them: "In truth I tell you, as soon as You made Him a brother of mine, even the smallest, You have done it unto me.¨ (Mt. 25.3740) But the love for my neighbor, begins with the love for myself, recognizing that I am created in the image and likeness of God and I have been created with a dignity, which I should respect myself and not belittle the glory of God that exists in me, as I was created by God's love. If I am not able to assert my rights and be treated with dignity and respect, then how am I going to uphold the rights of others? Loving myself should not be an act of selfishness that excludes others, but I must love others in the same manner. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Mt 7, 12). As Jesus said: “Never do to anyone what you would not have them do unto you”. Finally, paraphrasing St. Augustine: "Live as you please, but LOVE”.

Como condición para hacer la Primera Comunión, tuve que memorizar los Diez Mandamientos, aunque a los seis años de edad, con mi inocencia infantil, no podía entender de que se trataban o que querían decir. En un convivio ecuménico, en una Sinagoga en la Ciudad de México, me decía un Judío que tenían cientos de leyes que tenían que observar y que con ello regían su vida. Le dije lo

afortunado que era de ser Católico, con recelo me preguntó el por qué decía tal cosa, a lo que le contesté que era tan malo para memorizar, que con trabajos apenas recordaba los Diez Mandamientos. Con sorpresa por escuchar esto de un Sacerdote, me preguntó que cómo hacía para cumplir con la Ley de Dios, a lo que le contesté que hacía trampa. Que Solamente me acordaba y trataba de cumplir con estos dos: ¨Ama a Dios sobre todas las cosas¨ y ¨Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo¨. Y si cumplo con estos dos, mandamientos, ya cumplí con todos y con los cientos de leyes que tienen los Judíos, porque como dice San Agustín: ¨Ama y haz lo que quieras¨ porque el que ama, no puede pecar pues el pecado es la falta de amor. Podemos decir que amamos a Dios, pero tal parece que no lo amamos sobre todas las cosas, especialmente si tu equipo favorito juega el Domingo o si tienes planeada una reunión con los amigos o con la familia, o de plano consideras que basta con creer en Dios pero no es necesario ir a Misa. Sorpresa… El Diablo también cree en Dios, pero él si va a Misa. Si alguno dice: Yo amo a Dios, y aborrece a su hermano, es un mentiroso; porque el que no ama a su hermano, a quien ha visto, no puede amar a Dios a quien no ha visto. (1 Jn. 4, 20) El amor a Dios empieza en mi prójimo: Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento, y te dimos de comer, o sediento, y te dimos de beber? 38 "¿Y cuándo te vimos como forastero, y te recibimos, o desnudo, y te vestimos? 39 "¿Y cuándo te vimos enfermo, o en la cárcel, y vinimos a ti?" 40 Respondiendo el Rey, les dirá: "En verdad os digo que en cuanto lo hicisteis a uno de estos hermanos míos, aun a los más pequeños, a mí lo hicisteis.¨ (Mt. 25,3740) Pero el amor a mi prójimo, comienza con el amor a mí mismo, el reconocer que soy hecho a imagen y semejanza de Dios y que he sido creado con una dignidad que debo de respetar yo mismo y no menospreciar la gloria de Dios que existe en mí, ya que he sido creado por amor de Dios. Si no soy capaz de hacer valer mis derechos y de ser tratado con dignidad y respeto, entonces ¿Cómo voy a poder defender los derechos de los demás? Amarme a mí mismo no debe de ser un acto de egoísmo que excluya a los demás. Sino que debo de amar a los demás de la misma manera. ¨Trata a los demás como quieras que te traten a ti¨(Mt. 7, 12) y, como decía Cristo: ¨Nunca hagas a nadie, lo que no quieras que te hagan a ti¨. Finalmente, parafraseando a San Agustín… Pórtense como les de la gana, pero AMEN.

THE ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. In 1000 A.D., the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It is widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. All Souls Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils. The All Saints Day celebration was also called All-hallows or All-Hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

THE DAY OF THE DEAD

The Spanish were surprised to see that the Aztecs celebrated the Day of the Dead on November 2. Precisely the same day of the Christian commemoration dedicated to the faithful deceased. For the Aztecs, death was not the end, but the continuation of life. Life cannot exist without death and death is in turn, part of life. When someone died, it was considered that they would live in a particular paradise, depending on the type of death they had. The funeral was a celebration where there was singing and joy, and sorrow was not allowed. The ancient Mexicans believed that their beloved deceased came to visit their families on November 1st and 2nd. The way home was marked from their grave with flowers or Zempualxochitl. The living relatives happily welcomed them with their preferred food, drinks and candy. This tradition is preserved to this day and is accepted and promoted by the Catholic Church, who sees in this tradition, an excellent element of evangelization. Because as it is said in the Preface of the dead; Life doesn’t end, it is transformed. It is not worshiping death, it is worshiping life after this life. We believe that everyone who is in Heaven is a Saint. When we pray to a saint, we don’t invoke a spirit of a dead, we talk with a living being who listens and intercedes for us before God. All Saints day and all Souls day are related because we believe that everyone in heaven is a Saint and is enjoying the eternal life.

EL ORIGEN DEL HALLOWEEN

Esta festividad tiene su origen en los países Celtas, Irlanda, Escocia, Gran Bretaña y Francia. El 1 de Noviembre, celebraban el comienzo de un nuevo año. La víspera de ese día, se consideraba que todo estaba muerto

como los árboles que perdían las hojas. Por esto mismo, se hacían fogatas en las que se quemaba todo lo viejo y se vestían de pieles de animales y bailaban. En el año 1000, la Iglesia Católica impuso la celebración de Todos Los Santos el 1 de Noviembre y la conmemoración de los Fieles Difuntos el día 2 del mismo mes. Se acostumbraba vestirse de Santos o de Ángeles para celebrar a todos los Santos. Con influencia de las tradiciones Celtas, se continuó con la tradición de disfrazarse y compartir comida la víspera de Todos los Santos (All Hallows) llamándole All Hallows Evening, y quedando la contracción de Halloween. Esta tradición pasó a los Estados Unidos con los primeros inmigrantes hasta nuestros días en la que los niños acostumbran disfrazarse de sus monstruos o personajes favoritos y a pedir dulces de casa en casa.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

Los Españoles se sorprendieron al ver que los Aztecas celebraban el Día de los Muertos el 2 de Noviembre. Justamente el mismo día de la conmemoración Cristiana dedicada a los fieles difuntos. Para los Aztecas, la muerte no era el final, sino la continuación de la vida. La vida no puede existir sin la muerte y la muerte es a su vez, parte de la vida. Cuando alguien

moría, se consideraba que iba a vivir en algún paraíso en particular, dependiendo el tipo de muerte que hubiera tenido. El funeral era un festejo con cantos y alegría donde no se permitía la tristeza. El día 1 y el 2 de Noviembre se consideraba que los muertos venían a visitar a sus familias y se les marcaba el camino a casa desde su sepultura con flores de muerto o Zempualxochitl. En la casa se les esperaba con la comida, bebida y golosinas que el difunto prefería en vida. Esta tradición se conserva hasta hoy en día y es aceptada y promovida por la Iglesia Católica porque no difiere de nuestra fe en la que sabemos, como dice el Prefacio de Difuntos que La vida se transforma, no se acaba. No es el culto a la muerte, es el culto a la vida después de esta vida. Todos los que están en el Cielo, son Santos. Cuando oramos a un Santo, no invocamos a un muerto, sino que nos dirigimos a alguien que vive en Dios y que intercede por nosotros ante El. Es por eso que la celebración de Todos los Santos y los Fieles Difuntos están ligadas, pues quien vive en Cristo y muere en él, también resucitará en él. La vida eterna empieza en nuestro Bautismo y ya la estamos viviendo para la eternidad.

LA COLECTA DE ESTA SEMANA ES EN FAVOR DE LAS VICTIMAS DE INCENDIOS.- Nuevamente pido su generosidad para ayudar a quienes han sufrido los terribles fuegos en el Norte de California. Los fondos recaudados serán distribuidos en la Diócesis de Santa Rosa para ayudar a la reconstrucción de Escuelas, Iglesias y otras instalaciones. La otra mitad es para Caridades Católicas de Santa Rosa para asistir en sus necesidades a los afectados por los incendios. Agradezco al pueblo Católico por su extraordinaria generosidad.

THIS WEEK THE SECOND COLLECTION IS FOR THE VICTIMS OF FOREST FIRES.- Once again I ask your generosity by providing an opportunity for people to help those who have suffered from the terrible fires in Northern California. The collected funds will be divided for distribution to the Diocese of Santa Rosa to help with the reconstruction of schools, churches and church facilities. The other half will go to Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa to help meet the immediate needs of those affected by the fire. I thank our Catholic People for their extraordinary generosity.
