Dear Friends,

I have been asked by a few people about the Renew My Church process that is going on throughout the Archdiocese. There are many misunderstandings about it. I’d like to make an attempt to address some of them.

The stated purpose of Renew My Church (RMC) is: “Called by Jesus Christ, we are making disciples, building communities and inspiring witness”. At the forefront of the process is the spiritual renewal of our local Church. We MUST keep that in

mind as we go forward.

Many times, we become complacent in our spiritual lives. We do that personally as well as collectively. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on our spirituality and envision some adjustments. This may involve change. Change can be difficult, but also an opportunity for growth. We must keep in mind that all of us can benefit from a spiritual checkup so that our relationship to Christ is continually deepened.

Our Christ centered lives are recharged as we gather for the Eucharist each weekend and are sent forth to live good lives. Our moral imperative is to share what we have with the poor and the underserved.

Often people have commented to me how welcoming SJB is! All are welcome as it says right above our front door! We must continue to be a welcoming community for those who come here. We also must invite others to join us each weekend to share in the great community that we are!

I notice on some wedding invites that they have a Plus One intended to let those that are invited to attend with someone else. (Sometimes I receive an invitation that says Plus One!)

We need that same sentiment so that all of us are continually inviting someone to join us at our Eucharistic celebrations. Let’s commit ourselves to being a Plus One community! Each week may each of us invite one other person to join us. Let them see what great things happen in our Church each weekend.

We will face challenges from people who have not attended Church regularly, or may be alienated. Many have valid concerns. We need to engage in respectful dialogue with others. We must come to a common ground. We need to share our faith and its impact on our lives, share our joy being a member of SJB.

The focus is always on Jesus Christ! We are called by Him “to make disciples, building communities and inspiring witness.” In that way we will renew the Church.

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY

The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7.

Please pray the Rosary.

RESPECT LIFE MONTH Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life so that we can then work together to respect life throughout the coming year.

BOOK OF THE DEAD The Book of the Dead will be located in the Church during the month of October. All are invited to inscribe the names of your departed loved ones in the book. We will remember all of our faithful departed during our All Souls Day liturgies.

Play Group is Back Play Group meets on Thursday mornings from 9:30 am -11:00 am. Bring your little ones (under 3 years old) to play, they will have fun and you can meet other parents! It is free!

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is available every Saturday at 4 p.m. Confessions are always available by appointment. Please contact the rectory office to

POZOLE SALE: OCTOBER 20, 2019St. John Berchmans’ Guadalupe Committee will be selling Pozole after all the morning masses on Sunday, October 20. Pozole is a traditional Mexican soup or stew made from red chiles and containing pork and hominy. It is garnished with onions, limes,

radishes, oregano, cabbage or avocado. It is served on special occasions. It is so tasty and we know you’re going to enjoy it on a cold autumn day. Come join us and help us raise funds for our Lady of Guadalupe event on December 12.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK

If anyone who is ill, needs Holy Communion brought to their home or knows someone else who does, please contact the rectory with the person’s name and phone number. Someone from the parish Ministers of the Sick will contact them.

Queridos Amigos,

Algunas personas me han preguntado sobre el proceso de Renovar Mi Iglesia que está ocurriendo en toda la Arquidiócesis. Hay muchos malentendidos al respecto. Me gustaría intentar definir algunos de ellos.

El propósito declarado de Renovar Mi Iglesia (RMC) es: “Llamados por Jesucristo, estamos haciendo discípulos, construyendo comunidades e inspirando testigos”. En la vanguardia está la renovación espiritual de nuestra Iglesia local. DEBEMOS tener eso en cuenta a medida que avanzamos.

Muchas veces nos sentimos satisfecho con nuestra vida espiritual. Hacemos esto tanto en lo personal como en lo social. Esta es una oportunidad para que reflexionemos sobre nuestra espiritualidad y visualicemos algunos ajustes. Esto puede implicar un cambio. El cambio puede ser difícil pero también una oportunidad para crecer. Debemos tener en cuenta que todos podemos beneficiarnos de un examen espiritual para que nuestra relación con Cristo se esté profundizando continuamente.

Nuestras vidas centradas en Cristo se sobrecargan a medida que nos reunimos para la Eucaristía cada fin de semana y nos envían a vivir bondadosas vidas. Nuestro propósito moral es compartir lo que tenemos con los pobres y los marginados.

¡A menudo la gente me ha comentado lo acogedor que es SJB! ¡Todos son bienvenidos, tal como lo dice la inscripción encima de nuestra puerta! Debemos continuar siendo una comunidad acogedora para quienes vienen aquí. ¡También debemos invitar a otros a unirse a nosotros cada fin de semana para compartir en la gran comunidad que somos!

He notado que algunas invitaciones de boda tienen un “Más Uno” con el propósito de permitir que los invitados lleven a alguien más. (¡A veces recibo invitaciones que dice Más Uno!)

Necesitamos esa misma técnica para que todos continuamente invitemos a alguien a unirse a nosotros en nuestras celebraciones eucarísticas. ¡Comprometámonos a ser una comunidad Más Uno! Cada semana todos pueden invitar a otra persona para que nos acompañe. Permítales ver qué grandes cosas suceden en nuestra Iglesia cada fin de semana.

Enfrentaremos desafíos con personas que no han asistido a la Iglesia regularmente, o que pueden estar alienados. Muchos tienen preocupaciones válidas. Necesitamos entablar un diálogo respetuoso con los demás. Debemos llegar a un terreno común. Necesitamos compartir nuestra fe y su impacto en nuestras vidas, compartamos nuestra alegría de ser miembros de SJB.

¡El enfoque siempre está en Jesucristo! Somos llamados por Él “para hacer discípulos, construir comunidades e inspirar testigos.” De esa manera renovaremos la Iglesia.

MES DE RESPETO A LA VIDA Cada octubre, la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos celebra el Mes de Respeto a la Vida, y el primer domingo de octubre se observa como el Domingo de Respeto a la Vida. Como católicos, estamos llamados a valorar, defender y proteger a los más vulnerables desde el comienzo de sus vidas hasta el final, y en todas las circunstancias. Durante el mes de octubre, la Iglesia nos pide que reflexionemos más profundamente sobre la dignidad de cada vida humana para que a continuación logremos trabajar juntos para respetar la vida durante el próximo año.

EVANGELIZATION 101 WITH SISTER DIANE

MARIEMany questions arise regarding the topic of Evangelization. “What is it”? “Who does it”? “Does it mean knocking on doors?” “What’s the purpose”? “What does it mean for St. John Berchmans Parish”?

These are all excellent questions and the purpose of this space is to share with you some of the information learned, so that together we can move forward in creating a culture of evangelization here at St. John Berchmans.

What is evangelization? It is sharing the Good News of the Gospel in our daily lives. Next week we will begin to go into more depth about what that means and how. Stay tuned.

Surgen muchas preguntas con respecto al tema de evangelización. “Qué es”? “Quien lo hace”? “¿Significa tocar en las puertas?” “¿Cuál es el propósito”? “¿Qué significa para la parroquia de San Juan Berchmans”?

Todas estas son excelentes preguntas y el propósito aquí, es compartir con ustedes parte de la información aprendida para que juntos podamos avanzar y crear una cultura de evangelización aquí en San Juan Berchmans.

¿Qué es evangelización? Es compartir la Buena Nueva del Evangelio en nuestra vida diaria. La próxima semana comenzaremos a profundizar más sobre cómo y lo que eso significa. Manténganse al tanto.
