Dear Friends, “Thank you Lord. Thank you Lord. Thank you Lord. I just want to thank you Lord!” The simple words of this Gospel hymn have filled my head and heart this week. Early in the week I read, prayed over, and reflected on this weekend’s Scripture readings, as I do each week. Gratitude. I remember a

wise old priest who shared one of his mottos of life. He told me, “An attitude of gratitude wins.” Throughout salvation history, Scripture and Tradition admonish the faithful to be grateful. Gratitude produces joy. Gratitude impels action. What we do each Sunday gives God Thanks. Even the term Eucharist comes from the Greek word that means giving thanks. Do we come each Sunday thankful for the gifts that God has given? Do our liturgies express the joy we have? Are we enthusiastic in our spoken and sung responses at Mass? Many people have commented on the beauty of the music and the liturgy. We have to remember, though, that the liturgy belongs to everybody. Each person must fully and actively participate in this expression of our joy and gratitude. Joyful, grateful Christians attract others. Grateful Christians act. When we realize the many ways God has blessed us, when we acknowledge all that we have and are - admitting that everything comes from God, we ought do nothing but figure out a way to give back. Too often, we overlook our blessings and look at the “glass half-empty” and complain about what we don’t have, or how someone or some institution hasn’t lived up to our expectations. Spending our time criticizing and complaining, stifles gratitude. Stifled gratitude paralyzes the Christian. Reflective gratitude generously gives. Active, reflective gratitude makes me think of an elderly, often-homeless woman I know from Catholic Charities. I will call her “Jeanie.” Jeanie suffers much, and experiences physical and psychological difficulties. She visits Catholic Charities Tuesday Night Supper often and has been invited to participate in a program we call “After Supper Visions.”

In the program, we give cameras to the Supper guests and invite them to take pictures of what is beautiful to them. We develop, mat, and frame the photos and host an art show each June. Guests come to the show and purchase prints. The “artists” earn $70 per print sold. Jeanie always donates 10% of her earnings to Catholic Charities. She encloses her yearly money order in a thank you card - expressing gratitude to God and the Catholic Charities team. Amazing. A true attitude of gratitude brings her solace, peace and joy. Naaman offered his life in gratitude to God for the work done through the work of Elisha, the man of God. The cleansed leper (one of ten) enthusiastically thanked Jesus. I’m sure both lived their subsequent lives in service to God and neighbor. God has done great things for us. Let’s thank God and devote our lives to God’s service, generously giving back, and joyfully attracting others.On Tuesday, I celebrated Mass at the home of a young man who was in a terrible car accident a year ago. He has spent the last year in hospitals and in rehabilitation institutions. He returned home last week. Despite all of his difficulties and uncertain future, he must have said, “thank you” more than a dozen times during my visit. I believe his attitude of gratitude will make him win. Peace,

P.S. Speaking of gratitude and giving back… In two weeks, on Sunday October 23, we will combine our last two morning Masses. We will have one bilingual Mass at 10:30. After Mass we will have a sort of “State of the Parish” and will have the parish kickoff for the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign. The meeting will be engaging and informative. Please plan to attend.

OCT. 12 MEETING FOR SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

FAMILIES

Parents of all children preparing to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and Holy Communion, as well as Confirmation, are required to attend an informational meeting in the Church on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The First Communion meeting begins at 6 p.m. and is for parents. The Confirmation meeting begins at 6:30 and students are expected to attend along with their parents. Confirmation sponsors are also welcome to attend. FIRST COMMUNION RITE OF ENROLLMENT IS OCT. 16

Children who will be making their First Holy Communion in May 2017 will take part in a special Rite of Enrollment on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the 9:45 a.m. Mass. In this ritual, the children affirm their desire to receive the sacrament of Eucharist and say they are willing to participate at Mass, pray and develope a closer relationship with Jesus. Parents promise to bring their children to Mass and encourage them to pray, and the faith community as a whole is asked to support, mentor and pray for the children and their families as they prepare for the sacrament. Join us and walk with these children as they journey toward this blessed milestone in their lives.

Queridos Amigos, “Gracias Señor. Gracias Señor. Gracias Señor. ¡Sólo quiero darte las gracias Señor!” Las sencillas palabras de este himno del Evangelio continúan en mi mente y corazón esta semana. A principios de la semana leí, recé y reflejé en las lecturas bíblicas de este fin de semana, como lo hago todas las semanas. Gratitud. Recuerdo un antiguo sabio sacerdote quien compartió

uno de sus lemas de vida. Me dijo, “una actitud de agradecimiento gana.” A lo largo de la historia de salvación, Escritura y Tradición se advierte a los fieles a ser agradecidos. La gratitud produce alegría. La gratitud impulsa a la acción. Lo que hacemos todos los domingos, es dar gracias a Dios. Incluso el término Eucaristía viene de la palabra griega que significa dar gracias. ¿Venimos todos los domingos agradecidos por los dones que Dios nos ha dado? ¿Nuestras liturgias expresan la alegría que tenemos? ¿Estamos entusiasmados cuando respondemos y cantamos en la Misa? Muchas personas han hecho comentarios acerca de la belleza de la música y la liturgia. Sin embargo, hay que recordar, que la liturgia es de todos. Cada persona debe participar plena y activamente en esta expresión de nuestra alegría y gratitud. Los cristianos alegres y agradecidos atraen a los demás. Los cristianos agradecidos actúan. Cuando nos damos cuenta de las muchas maneras en que Dios nos ha bendecido, cuando reconocemos todo lo que tenemos y todo lo que somos - admitiendo que todo viene de Dios, necesitamos encontrar una manera de devolver. Con demasiada frecuencia, pasamos por alto nuestras bendiciones y miramos el “vaso medio vacío” y nos quejamos de lo que no tenemos, o cómo alguien o alguna institución no ha alcanzado nuestras expectativas. Pasando el tiempo criticando y quejándonos, sofoca el agradecimiento. El agradecimiento sofocado paraliza al cristiano. La gratitud reflectante da generosamente. La gratitud activa, reflectante me hace pensar en una mujer mayor, a menudo sin hogar que conocí en Caridades Católicas. Voy a llamarla “Jeanie.” Jeanie sufre mucho, y experimenta dificultades físicas y psicológicas. Ella asiste a la Noche de Cena de Caridades Católicas y a menudo ha sido invitada a participar en un programa que llamamos “Visiones Después de la Cena.” En el programa, les

damos cámaras a los huéspedes de la Cena y los invitamos a tomar fotos de lo que ellos creen que es bello. Nosotros revelamos, ensamblamos y ponemos las fotos en marcos y organizamos una feria de arte cada año en el mes de junio. Los invitados vienen a la feria y compran las fotografías. Una verdadera actitud de agradecimiento le trae consuelo, paz y alegría. Naamán ofreció su vida a Dios en agradecimiento por el trabajo realizado a través de la obra de Eliseo, el hombre de Dios. El leproso sanado y limpio (uno de cada diez) agradeció a Jesús entusiasmadamente. Estoy seguro de que ambos vivieron sus vidas posteriores sirviendo a Dios y al prójimo. Dios ha hecho grandes cosas por nosotros. Demos gracias a Dios y dediquemos nuestras vidas al servicio de Dios, dando generosamente, y atrayendo a los demás con alegría. El martes, celebré Misa en la casa de un joven quien sufrió un terrible accidente de auto hace un año. Ha pasado el último año en hospitales y en instituciones de rehabilitación. Regresó a su casa la semana pasada. A pesar de todas sus dificultades y de un futuro incierto, tuvo que haber dicho, “gracias” más de una docena de veces durante mi visita. Creo que su actitud de agradecimiento ganará.Paz,

P.D. Hablando de gratitud y devolviendo... En dos semanas, el domingo 23 de octubre combinaremos nuestras dos últimas Misas de la mañana. Tendremos una Misa bilingüe a las 10:30am. Después de la Misa tendremos una especie de “Estado de la Parroquia” y tendremos el lanzamiento inicial para la parroquia de la Campaña Enseñar Quién es Cristo. La reunión será interesante e informativa. Por favor, planee asistir.

CÍRCULO DE MUJERES DE FE

El Círculo de Mujeres de Fe se reunirá el martes 11 de octubre, en la capilla de la escuela a las 7 pm. Usted está invitada a compartir un momento de tranquilidad, tiempo para orar con un grupo de fe, mientras que toma un descanso de la rutina diaria y enfoca su atención en el crecimiento espiritual. FAMILIAS EL 12 DE OCTUBRE

Los padres de todos los niños que se preparan para recibir los sacramentos de la Primera Reconciliación y la Santa Comunión, así como la Confirmación, están obligados a asistir a una reunión informativa en la Iglesia el miércoles 12 de octubre. EL RITO DE INSCRIPCIÓN DE LA PRIMERA COMUNIÓN ES

EL 16 DE OCTUBRE

Los niños harán su Santa Primera Comunión en mayo 2017, la participación en el especial Rito de Inscripción es el domingo 16 de octubre, en la Misa de 9:45 de la mañana. En este ritual, los niños afirman su deseo de recibir el sacramento de la Eucaristía y dicen que están dispuestos a participar en la misa, rezar y desarrollar una relación más estrecha con Jesús. Los padres se comprometen a llevar a sus hijos a Misa y animarles a orar, y se le pide a la comunidad de fe que apoyen, guíen, y oren por los niños y sus familias, mientras que se preparan para el sacramento. Únase a nosotros a caminar con estos niños en su jornada en este bendito transcurso en sus vidas.

Parish Pastoral Council Spotlight

Pete TigueWho I am: My name is Pete Tigue and I can’t wait to meet you!

What I do: I love to swim, bike, kayak, and run, but also (and more so) Netflix. I keep myself

busy working at Grainger where I work in Supply Chain/Warehousing leading an analytics team.

How I got to SJB: I grew up in Peoria and studied business at the University of Illinois. After college I spent some time working in Canada and then Ohio. I moved to Logan Square at the end of 2013 and have made SJB my home ever since.

Roles: I currently serve as the Co-Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council and was formerly leading the Spiritual Life Commission; I’m a member of the Parish Finance Committee; and I love helping with the Confirmation Retreat.

Expectations of the Council: I’m ever grateful for the experiences I had growing up in strong Catholic communities. I hope to contribute to the wonderful community at SJB as we grow our Youth Ministry and Faith Formation programs. The vitality of the parish must be rooted in the Eucharistic - I’ll see you on Sunday!
