Why Over-Seed?Each October we close the course for three weeks to accomplish Over-Seeding. Why would we want to close the course for three weeks just as the weather is getting nice and the course is in great shape?
The reason is to provide our golfers with a better playing surface and green grass during the cool winter months. If we dont go through the Over-Seed process, our Bermuda base turf becomes yellowish/brown after the first frost of the year. The Bermuda grass actually goes dormant during the cooler winter months. For this reason, we Over-Seed with Rye grass, which is a cool season grass that is able to grow in the winter months.
The process begins by cutting the Bermuda grass short, a pro-cess called scalping, and reducing the water supply, thus forcing the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. We then seed thecourse with Rye grass and turn the water back on to germinate the Rye seed. Rye grass requires constant moisture until it germi-nates and matures. October temperatures are ideal for this pro-cess and keeps the Bermuda grass dormant.
We hope this helps answer the question of Why Over-Seed? and we appreciate your patience during this process.2

Lainie and Billy Ruben
Lainie and Billy Ruben have resided in Sun City Festival since 2011.
Before coming to Sun City Festival, they lived in Columbus, Ohio where they owned and operated a retail jewelry store together. They have been married for 45 years and have a son, a daughter, and three wonderful grandchildren. Lainie graduated from The Ohio State University and
Billy from Miami University (Ohio). Billy went on to earn his Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America.
In 1994 when their kids were both in college, they began traveling extensively in their RV. They fell in love with the Southwest and knew that someday theyd like to retire here. When that someday came, they chose to live in Sun City Festival because of the active lifestyle, variety of activities, and especially all the friendly faces!
Billy is presently the president of the Shalom Group in Sun City Festival and is a Neighborhood Representative for the Desert Peak area.
They both enjoy and participate in many activities and clubs in the community and just started playing golf.

Along with technological progress many different models of fitness trackers have been developed, including the electronic, wrist-worn devices used to measure, among other things, calorie expenditure and steps taken. These trackers interface with computers and smartphones to help users monitor weight, fitness and other physiological param-eters.
While these devices are useful and helpful, the information they provide is only as good as how it is measured. In other words, if the count of steps taken, or estimate of calories burned is inaccurate, the data may not be very beneficial.
According to Ray Browning, Ph.D., Director of Physi-cal Activity Energetics/Mechanics Lab at Colorado State University, the accuracy of fitness trackers varies widely based on brand.
All of the trackers function via a built-in accelerometer. The accelerometer senses changes in motion and acceleration, it does not measure your exertion. The device cannot tell if your arm is wielding a candy bar or a 50-pound dumbbell. And, if the wrist-worn device is not experiencing back-and-forth movement, it wont register anything. Thus, an activity like bike riding may not be fully counted, or, may not be counted at all.
In one study, estimated calorie expenditure of fitness tracking devices was compared with measured calorie expenditure via a portable metabolic analyzer. Over 69 minutes of prescribed activity, the trackers were found to be 10-15 percent off. The Fitbit mod-els were found to be more accurate than the Nike Fuel Band and some others. In addi-tion, all of the models tested overestimated calories burned. Because you are able to specifically enter the types of exercises performed, weightlifting, etc., the smartphone apps tend to add some accuracy to the number of calories burned.
Dr. Browning says the good news about the trackers is that their results are repeat-able. So, if activities are the same on a daily basis, you will know if youre burning ad-ditional calories on a day-to-day basis. This allows you to measure, not just steps and calories, but also progress. Measuring progress can be just as helpful.
The popular and technologically-advanced fitness trackers of today are convenient and easy to use. And, they allow you to estimate calorie burn and number of steps taken. Be aware, however, they may not be as accurate as you think.
