Please support our Table Quiz A table quiz will be held at Blarney Castle Hotel on Friday November7th at 8pm by the parents of Hannah, 7, and Patrick, 5, whorespectfully seek funding support for autism treatment for thechildren in the USA.“Hannah and Patrick have both been diagnosed with ASD, Autism andlive with us, their parents Caroline and Neil, in Dublin. According tomainstream medicine there is no known cure for ASD and treatment is notcovered by the HSE or private medical insurance. We have tirelesslyresearched ASD and find it very difficult to accept this fate. Both childrenare non verbal, very poor cognition and fully dependant on us for theircare. Hannah has a serious food disorder and is fed through a gastrostomytube since 2012.Through exhaustive research we uncovered the Advanced MedicalCentre in North Carolina, they specialise in the advanced treatment ofASD for children. The treatment is carried out over a four week periodand repeated at least four times inside a 12 month period. We personallyknow one little boy who is now fully cured and attending main streamschool after completing this treatment. The cost for the 12 month schedulefor both children will be in excess of €140,00 which we need to raiseprivately. We would be extremely grateful for your kindness andconsideration to support Hannah an Patrick's treatment as we plan to makethe first treatment visit later this month.”Thanking you, Neil & Caroline McCarthy

Minister Dara Murphy recently visited Blarney to raisethe European flag with the young pupils from pupils ofScoil Chroí Íosa. Speaking to The Muskerry News about his recentappointment Dara told us, “I was deeply honoured inJuly when the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny appointed me asMinister for European Affairs and Data Protection. As Vice Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on EUAffairs, and also Chairman of Fine Gael’s EuropeanAffairs Committee since my election three years ago, Ihave been involved in the workings of Europe for sometime and I am very familiar with the interactions that takeplace between Ireland and our fellow EU member states. One of my visions for Europe is to make it morerelevant to our people here at home and to develop abetter understanding of Europe in a ‘Post-Troika’ setting. Therefore a priority for me in my role as Minister forEuropean Affairs is to bring Europe back to the Irishpeople now.

Responsibility for data protection will form animportant part of my portfolio. By assigning specificresponsibility for data protection to a Minister, I believethe Taoiseach and Tánaiste have clearly signalled thegrowing importance of this issue. The internet has madelife easier in so many ways but if we are socialising anddoing business online, we are making our personal dataavailable in new ways. We need to make sure that wehave the right safeguards in place in Ireland so thatindividuals are protected. I am aware that the job I have been tasked with is notan easy one, but it is one that I am excited about and oneI am confident I can do well. I believe that it will be verybeneficial from a Cork perspective to have another FineGael Minister working with Simon Coveney and I lookforward to continuing to represent Cork North Centrallocally, in Dáil Éireann and at an EU level.”

It is that time of the year again! Kids are back toschool and as much as we like to pretend it ismuch too far into the distance, Christmas isseeping its way into our psyche and putting us insaving and preparation mode. In my opinion thishighlights two health issues:

1. Influenza (“the flu”)2. StressI cannot stress how important the flu vaccine is, not just forthose in our communities that are sick, but also people whocome in contact with the sick. The more people who getvaccinated in our community, the less people who contract theflu and therefore the less people who are contagious.Contagious people are a very serious danger for anyone whohas a long term health condition. This is why I would urge ourcommunities to get vaccinated. You cannot get the flu fromthe vaccine, it is not a live vaccine so we are not injecting theflu into you! Ask our staff about getting your flu vaccine atPFP Tower!

Stress has a huge effect on our heart health long term. At PFPTower you can get a cholesterol test for €10, a full breakdownfor €22.50 and our full health clinic for just €50 which willgive you a detailed report on how you can fit healthy eatingand exercise into the hectic school-run routine!

The Green Flag was awarded forlitter and waste management, andwas raised by first year studentSally Cummins. Members of theGreen School Committee, whichincluded Chairperson MichaelHyde, Secretary Alan McEvoy, and first year representative Triona Twomey, spoke on the great work carried out over the last year. Special guest AnTaisce representative, Dr. Mary Stack, spoke to the group highlighting theimportance of this internationally recognised programme. Over the last twoyears tremendous work has been carried out by the Green School committeein combating litter and waste. Specially designed recycling and waste unitshave been assembled throughout the school, awareness campaigns havebeen held including a bottle buster competition for first years, a ‘Day ofAction’ and various talks given by Cork County Council and An Taisce. ATransition Year Action Group has been set up to complement the GreenSchool committee in their endeavours. Credit is due to the commitment, hard work and dedication of students and staff with a special thank you toTom McGrath, Blarney Tidy Towns, for his work and guidance, and parents’representatives, Tom Healy and John Kearney.

The Amber Flag, a Suicide Aware initiative, was awarded for thepromotion of positive mental health in the school community. A voluntarycommittee made up of four students, namely Aoife Cotter, Kayleigh Cronin,Lauren Lehane and Austin O’Neill; two parents Ruth Ring and MarionO’Sullivan, and three teachers Aideen Collins, Maura Lucey and KathrinaMcCarthy, met regularly during the year to organise services and activitiesto improve positive mental health promotion within the school. On the dayAustin O’Neill raised the Flag and the three students spoke about why theygot involved in this initiative and outlined the activities that they hadorganised throughout the year such as putting up notices on student and stafftoilet doors with crisis help line numbers; 1st and 2nd year flash mobs;putting up a positive thoughts notice board, and running a positive mentalhealth promotion week in conjunction with Healthy Eating Week. Duringthis week every year group had a practical workshop in mindfulness and aspeaker on how to look after their mental health. Patricia Behan of SuicideAware spoke frankly about the reality of a young person taking their ownlives, and the need to talk when feeling down, especially for young males. She also highlighted the importance of every young person having one goodadult identified that they can talk to. Mr. Sheehan, Principal, reiterated this, advising students that every staff member is there willing to help, wantingonly the best for the student population.

GUM DISEASE!You may be aware that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth losstoday, but did you know that gum disease is linked to heart disease andstrokes, pregnancy problems such as low birth weight, diabetes andrespiratory disease? It may be more serious than you think.Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the teeth andattach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar build up on theteeth. Plaque can be removed with careful toothbrushing and flossing.Tartar forms when plaque is hardened by minerals such as calcium presentin saliva. Tartar has to be removed professionally by your dentist orhygienist. Smoking also has a very harmful effect on the gums. Everysmoker has gum disease but some smokers are affected worse than others. You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced. Therefore,it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be aware of thefollowing signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth starting to loosen. What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly andgently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day using afluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or interdentaltoothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up and a professionalclean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next visit, why not ask yourdentist or hygienist how best to keep your teeth clean? It could save yourteeth and improve your health! Medical Card holders and PRSI patients are entitled to a freeexamination once a year. Medical Card holders are also entitled to freeemergency treatment including 2 free fillings, free extractions andemergency dentures.Carolyn Barry Murphy BDS

challenges that lie ahead. The new year brings with it the challenge of refocusing and making activities more

relevant to local businesses and the need to engage more wholeheartedly with businesses in a bid to achieve our potential.

The Chamber committee is comprised of volunteers and the outgoing Chairman and committee members

were thanked for their commitment during the year.

“I am privileged to have been chosen as theChairman for the coming 12 months for theBlarney & District Chamber of Commerce. Thoseof us who were there when the first meeting ofBlarney Chamber took place 5 years ago, werehopeful that it would last as an organisation and takeits place as in intrinsic part of Blarney life. I believethat it has. During my tenure I have the support of both anenthusiastic committee and committed members, all

of whom are excited at the thought of the Chamber becoming even morerelevant. With your support I believe that we can make this possible. Wehave an agenda of growth, and to reach our targets, we will require thehelp of all members of the community. This is where you too can playyour part.Blarney & District Chamber of Commerce is committed to supportingour local community - it's the very essence of what we do. We believe thatspending money in local shops and with local business people is moreimportant than ever, and the key to a thriving local community. Everyonein the community can contribute. What we are championing, in two simplewords, is to Shop Local. Because Local Matters.I earnestly ask that before you purchase a good or service that you askyourself an important question. Can I support my local community bypurchasing this locally?Regardless of what you purchase, regardless of your business ororganisation, please think local first. A full list of members is alsoavailable on our website; blarneychamber.com.Local businesses and business people are, quite rightly, often called uponto support local organisations and groups. Therefore, it is only fair andreasonable to assume that the same courtesy be extended back. We are asmall community but within our midst we have businesses and businesspeople for whom commerce is their lifeblood and can confidently betweenthem meet many, if not all, of your requirements.I hope that over the next 12 months you will see more of what Blarney &District Chamber of Commerce contributes to your community, and I callon all local businesses who are not yet members to consider joining ourorganisation. Over the coming months the relevance of our organisationwill become clear and I look forward to welcoming you on board.I am always available for any comments, suggestions, observations orcriticisms and look forward to hearing from you on 087 2244364or byemail to [email protected] Sincerely,Damian Boylan Chairman.”

This will be a vulgar article, not to say low, for it relates to slang, whichis both! Therefore, you who are particular in these things, or squeamish, would do well to skip. To such touch pitch and remain undefiled is difficult– unless gloves be worn. So much as a warning. Unaffectedly speaking, wefind local slang a very interesting tongue, and comprehensive if somewhatunscientific. A youth of the street says that he will have to ‘flag’ it tonight inhis ‘drop-dead,’ i.e. for want of a lodging he must walk the streets all night –bereft of all shelter save that afforded by his top-coat or ‘drop-dead.’ Let usexamine a little closely this, the first example that rises to the pen. The boyhas no bed. So he roams the streets through-out the night, passing from flag-way to flag-way. In brief, he ‘flags’ it. And he wears a ‘drop-dead.’, for, sureenough an ulster or top coat has a steep fall, and this perpendicularity ordead drop naturally courts the expressive description, ‘drop dead.’ Is notthat interesting? Mind you this is no exceptional case; similar instances inwhich ingenious word-twisting or sense-twisting is to be traced could bemultiplied. But there are some pages of this great Slang Dictionary whichpuzzles us. For example, those dealing with Finance. It is not given toordinary man to explain why ‘Scoish’ stands for farthing, ‘Make’ forhalfpenny, ‘Lop’ and ‘Ban’ for penny, ‘Deuce’ for twopence, ‘Tanner’ forsix-pence, ‘Bob’ for shilling, ‘Two and a tadgey’ for half-crown, ‘Half Skiff’for half-sovereign, and ‘Skiff’ for sovereign. All this is very wonderful andyet a well-educated little street boy who calls his mother ‘d’owl’ wan’ andhis papa ‘d’owl’ fellow’ could supply you any day with a new list containingan equally amazing synonym for each of these terms. So, Masters, you willkindly not ask for derivations or roots and branches or details of that sort. You will unquestioningly receive all that is tendered you and be thankful. And if you don’t, no good will come of this every day chat. Would youexpect us to deal with the light and shade, the past, the present and thefuture, the ramifications and off-shoots, the possibilities and impossibilitiesof a tongue that is spoken ‘Nort’ and ‘Sout’ that lovingly embraces the Mashand Goulnaspurra, that attunes the militiaman’s step in Mallow or Graball tothe ring of the newsboy’s cry of ‘Evenin’ Aycho’ in Patrick street? We don’tfeel equal to the task. We can only marvel with you at the potency of thesharp yell which once stopped a tin-pot band as it marched to meet apolitical leader – the yell of ‘Stop de band, dase a ferk canted.’ And we canonly surmise that some musician had been suddenly deprived of his head-gear, and that his comrades were loyal enough to cease performing in orderthat justice might be done. We can only wonder with you why that samelittle boy does not say he has partaken of a Penny Dinner instead of ‘peckedon a brown’s worth o’ hash’ – the same enjoyed at the Hash House – why hedoes not describe an altercation in less startling terms than ‘chewin’ de rag’;why his boots are his ‘skeets,’ and his unmentionables his ‘jers; and why heis never deceived, but always ‘sucked in’; why he calls a public-house a‘beer shant,’ and his lady-love a variety of names too numerous and tooout-landish for mention; why his top coat if not a ‘drop-dead’ is a ‘flogger’;why – But let us dam this impure stream- and go on wondering in our innerconsciousness whatever that may be. Little use for us to go to the boyhimself and enquire for particulars. For he would say with a stinging shakeof his shoulders – ‘Yerra go on now – get off our back, an’ don’t be coddin’us,’ speaking in the first person plural as he mostly does. That would be arude answer couched in vile and disgusting language. But don’t be too hardon him for all this slanginess. If he tried to speak otherwise he wouldprobably be misunderstood by his companions, who would then call him a’shaper,’ and do not forget that grammar or straight English has been, is, andever will be of less consequence to him than the means of ‘turning a copper’– a copper, mayhap, that is looked for all night by an old mother and helpsto illuminate the last dark turn in her crooked life-road. At any rate, thislittle boy can congratulate himself on the fact that better reared andwealthier persons than he are dropping into his mode of speech – that theDrawing Room will soon be level with the streets. Already they have their’Tanners,’ ‘Bobs,’ ‘Fivers,’ ‘Ponies,’ and ‘Monkeys,’ all belonging to thesection of the Slang Dictionary named ‘Chinks,’ they have their ‘Bosses’and ‘Governors’ for the paternal parent. Along with a luminous list of‘Togs,’ they have a ‘trot round’ with their ‘Mash’ instead of ‘takin a scovewith the Hooker,’ they put on ‘side’ or ‘style’ instead of ‘shapin’; they ‘do itheavy’ when they live lavishly, or ‘go on a burst’ instead of going on a

‘bend’ - and all the while they think the street-boy’s jargon dreadfullyvulgar. If we have any desire in this matter it is that the little boy shouldpreserve his Slang from the impurities of foreign streams. Some de-Anglicisation is already needed. The lad should not call his constable a‘cop,’ or a ‘Slop’. Nor should he refer to his head as his ‘chump,’ his eyes ashis ‘peepers,’ his nose as his ‘smeller,’ and his mouth as his ‘kisser.’ Theseand many other phrases that have of late supplanted the native terms recallEnglish streets and the Prize Ring. And if we are to have Slang at all let it beof Home Manufacture. The quality is better. The above was published, 120 years ago, in the Cork Examiner of Monday4th June 1894.

Blarney Petty Sessions Monday December 20th 1869Before Messrs. N. Dunscombe, N. Mahony and Dr. WallSeveral defendants convicted of trespass on the plantation of Sir. GeorgeColthurst, were fined in suitable penalties.Constable Drummy charged a publican named John Horgan with breach ofthe Publicans Licence Act, in having his public house at Cloghroe open at aquarter to twelve o’clock on Saturday night, and parties drinking therein. The defendant pleaded that a number of parties came into his house, andhaving got into a discussion about the Cloghroe affair, became so engrossedin the subject that he could not get them out at the legal time (a laugh).Mr. Dunscombe – And did they settle it at last?Defendant – They would not have settled it, your worship at all onlyConstable Drummy came in (laughter)Mr. Dunscombe – Well, in consequence of the discussion we shall only fineyou the minimum penalty of 10 shillings.Dr. Wall – And we hope that will teach you no to allow these Cloghroediscussions in future.Defendant – O! that’s too much. The fine was paid.William Spence summoned James Bourne for a sum of money representingthe cost of accommodation complainant was obliged to furnish his own son,who was apprentice to defendant, who neglected to provide him withsuitable lodgings.Complainant said defendant kept pigs in his house, which was in such acondition that his son could not stay in it, and had to come home every nightto sleep at his (complainant’s) house. In reply to Mr. O’Connell, who appeared for the defendant, complainantsaid the indentures of apprenticeship were lost; his son had been frequentlyabsent from his master’s business; could not say whether his son stole theindentures from defendant.Mr. O’Connell submitted the case could not be sustained. The benchdismissed it.

September was another exceptional month andit draws to a close with the first hints ofautumn. The nights are drawing in and the

trees around the arboretums are starting to change colour. I love this timeof year in the gardens. It has been very dry here but as I write this the rainis teeming down outside. I think it’s truly the end of our wonderfulsummer. As a result of the lack of rain the rivers are extremely low for thetime of year. I have a suspicion that this won’t be for much longer though. This is traditionally the time for cutting back, tidying and preparing forthe winter. I have started to watch the overnight temperatures, as at somepoint soon we will have to protect, or move indoors, our tender specimenplants from the Fern Garden and Tropical Border. We have just received adelivery of hardy and semi-hardy tropical plants which will add evenmore interest to the beds. Our apple orchard performed very well this year and the crop has justbeen picked and has gone to make organic apple juice. Pick apples andpears as they ripen, and store them in trays with shredded newspaper, straw or cardboard liners (as used in the greengrocers). For storage thetemperature needs to be cool but not frosty. Most homes will be too warmso it’s better to store them in a shed or garage, as long as they are rodent-proof. Windfall or bruised fruit is better used in desserts, jams or winemaking. The seasonal jobs are starting to build up. We are expecting our mainbulb delivery of around 12000 bulbs which will be planted throughout thegrounds and gardens. We are planting more drifts of crocus throughoutthe gardens and a feature bed of ornamental onions. In addition we haveour usual range of tulips, hyacinths and a few more unusual species forthe herbaceous border and poison garden.Winter bedding will also be due to go out over the next few weeks. Weuse a lot of pansy and viola as I find them to be the most reliable in ourunpredictable climate. In addition we will use mixes of skimmia, ivy, heathers and bellis. Last year we experimented with winter baskets at themain entrance and stable yard areas to keep a little colour over the dullermonths. These worked very well so we are going ahead with them again.Jobs for October include, tie in and cutting back of raspberry andloganberry canes if you haven’t already, bulb planting around the garden, apply autumn fertiliser to lawns, lift and divide herbaceous plants and cutback as they die down, stop feeding indoor plants now, tidy up beds, borders and glasshouses and make plans for next year.We are starting to plan our winter projects and as usual there are a fewinteresting developments in the pipeline. The lower rock close area iscoming along nicely and the next stage will be the opening of the newboardwalk and forest trail. This will be followed by the planting up of theGarden of the Seven Sisters. This area should be a great new feature fornext spring.Autumn is a wonderful time here in the gardens. Watch out for the treesstarting to colour up and come to see our Lime tree avenue, which turnsbright gold. I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. Adam

The new Junior Infant class have settled in reallywell at Vicarstown National School and areenjoying their experience to the full. We areprivileged to have three families of three sisters;the Jones Sisters, the Mulready Sisters and theLenehan Sisters.

Vicarstown National School Matehy held a very successful Picnic andFamily Fun evening at the school grounds in June, to mark the end ofanother eventful school year. The glorious weather added greatly to theatmosphere and all the participants made full use of the school pitch andfacilities. The arrival of an Ice Cream van was a source of great joy tothe children and parents alike. Everyone enjoyed their creamy treats. Aseries of athletic activities and matches then took place, which were verysporty and a tad competitive at times. The highlight of the sportingevening was a local derby tug-of-war, a sport long associated with theMatehy area, between the sturdiest and finest from the locality andnearby Courtbrtack. After much heaving and the odd bit of huffing,Courtbrack were declared victorious by a narrow margin. Great credit is

due to the Parents'Association fororganising this significantend of year celebration, which started off a greatsummer vacation.
