Many thanks to our small, butcommitted, band of volunteers who turn out every week to water theflowers - no small task!Blarney Tidy Towns are delighted to be a part of the Muskerry News campaign to raise funds for the installation of a publicly-accessible defibrillator. Congratulations to Elaine Cremin, originally from Blarney, but living inLondon for the past 11 years, on the publication of her book 'Waiting for aStar to Fall.' Elaine, who went to school in Blarney and who has familyliving in Blarney, has lived in London for the past 11 years. Working as aPersonal Assistant for over 20 years Elaine has lived and worked in variouscities, from Cork, Dublin, Rome and London. Her dream would be to workand live in New York. Talking to The Muskerry News Elaine said, “For many years I knew I

wanted to do something a bit different and had always dabbled in a littlewriting, but nobody was aware of this. One day a leaflet from the WritersBureau came through my letterbox and I decided to investigate further intotheir courses. I completed their fiction and non-fiction course and it wasfrom that point on I began writing my first novel ‘Waiting for a Star toFall’, which I have self published via CreateSpace. “I've got many more ideas for my next novel or novels and one day I

would like to tackle a screen play - which may be a bit ambitious, but nowI've come this far, I'm not going to stop following the dream.”'Waiting for a Star to Fall' was published on Amazon, and the CreateSpacewebsites and is available on Kindle. It follows the life of Aly Hugheswhose life just isn't quite going as she wants it to and goes from bad toworse in a matter of days. In a bid to turn it around and make a fresh start, she leaves her home of Cork and heads to New York to join her two bestfriends. The book follows their lives with the focus on Aly and furtherproblems she encounters on the road to find her 'one'.'Waiting for a Star to Fall' will strike a chord with many who have lefthome to live in countries throughout the world as there is a considerableamount of Irish sayings and slang in there, or as Elaine calls them‘Irishisms’. You can find out more on Twitter @ElaineCremin and facebook

SummerI met a lady recently at asocial function who hadmet me in our pharmacyin Douglas with acomplaint regarding theskin on her lip. She hadalready spent asignificant amount ofmoney on trying toresolve this issue andwas “at the end of hertether”. She was thrilled to let me know that the simple€6 cream I recommended had completely resolved herproblem.

“If only I had come across this pharmacy a month ago!”Such positive feedback is excellent but it got methinking, the nature of our countries position makes usprone to acute skin conditions in our changeablesummer weather.

The beauty about skincare in pharmacy is that you don’tnecessarily need to access the healthcare professional toget the best advice. In the vast majority of cases we haveskincare specialists who can resolve these issues for youin a matter of minutes. They also know when to refer tothe pharmacist if something needs a second opinion.

The skincare expertise in Pharmacy First Plus isunderutilized so feel free to drop in and ask about theoptions available to you to protect your skin!

Mouth CancerOral/mouth cancer is among the 10 most common cancers worldwide.98% of patients affected are over the age of 40, but it is increasingly seenin younger people. Men are more commonly affected than women, though the difference in incidence is less marked than it was in the past.

The cause of oral cancer is complex and there are many factors involved.Risk factors include:1. Tobacco causes oral cancer.2 Alcohol use, particularly beer and spirits.3. The combined use of both tobacco and alcohol is associated with agreater risk of developing oral cancer than either exposure alone.4. Sun exposure is associated with an increased risk of lip cancer.5. Diet poor in fresh fruit and vegetables.6. Poor oral health.

The signs and symptoms of oral cancer often resemble a lump, a red orwhite patch or an ulcer. If any such lesion does not heal normally within3 weeks, attendance at your dentist for examination is recommended. It isworth noting that pain is usually a late feature in oral cancer.

Early detection and prompt treatment offer the best hope to the patientwith oral cancer. Every time you visit your dentist for a routineexamination, an oral cancer screen is performed. Both the medical cardand PRSI schemes entitle patients to free annual dental examinations.

News from Times Past with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society

It is not a bad thing to be inquisitive, or to wonder, about your locality andits many historical aspects. Do not stay indoors at home, but go outside, look at and explore your area. If anyone takes the trouble and looks in theright places, a great many things about our past and heritage which areworth finding can be discovered. You may ask yourself why others seemto be the lucky ones and find things, or, why all the things worth findingseem to be already found. This is not so. Do not be discouraged becausewhile being out and about, you may be looking for one thing but maycome across a different item of interest, completely unexpectedly. To begin exploring, a very handy thing to have is an Ordnance Surveymap of the area. The Ordnance, which was the Department Of Stores forthe British Army, in the Tower of London, had its surveyors make maps ofIreland, England, Scotland, Wales and all the islands for the army. Thismammoth task took almost 100 years to complete and some of the firstmaps were published in the early 1800’s. Although the first surveyorswere unable to put as much as the modern cartographers or map-makersinto their maps, if you compare an early and a later map, you can easilysee the differences. These maps are a wealth of information and can bebought reasonably cheaply at most good stationery shops. A 1 inch to themile map will be sufficient to show the general area while a 2 or 3 inchmap will mark the limits of fields, roads, houses etc. Better and bigger stillat 6 inches to the mile, this large scale map will contain many smallerthings such as wells and bridges, ponds and parish boundaries, as well asnaming them. If you explore around your own home, be it in a town, village or in thecountry, one of these 6 inch maps can tell you where to find such things asold roads, footpaths, dis-used and abandoned old railways and it will guideyou to churches, towers, castles, various ruins, standing stones, burialmounds and chambers, old forts, houses, battlefields and monuments. Itwill also direct you to woods, marshes, bogs, rivers, weirs and waterfalls.Older maps could possibly show a small group of houses or a farm which, maybe, today does not exist anymore. A further help in your search couldbe a call to your local friendly library or a second-hand bookshop. Both ofthese places will have reference books on local history or specialist bookson just about any aspect of it you may wish to cover, from ancient coins toplace-names to holy wells.A good place to begin your exploring is in your own home, especially ifit is an old or unusual one. Sometimes the old deeds of the house may beavailable and are well worth looking at to see the terms under which thehouse was built or let. If it is old, it may have been built with stones orbricks and these can be a further clue to its age as perhaps the bricks hadto be imported from other places and could bear the maker’s name anddate of manufacture. Exploring then leads to the finding and collecting ofinformation about various subjects. Collecting of objects does notnecessarily mean the removal and taking of items from their historic sites. This is a job best left to the archaeologists. A notepad and pencil can beused to great effect by recording all available information about the itemor perhaps sketching it. Further, as most modern cameras are very easyand cheap to use, a collection of photographs could be built up of the moreunusual and rare objects. I myself, have a photographic collection of over seventy different typesof letter postal boxes and, amazingly, over fifty different types of publicwater pumps. These photographs should make interesting viewing in yearsto come as An Post are replacing the old, decorated boxes with a rathernon-descript modern type and the roadside public water pumps are simply‘vanishing’.There are many other things worth searching for around the area such asfords or stepping stone crossings of the local rivers Martin, Shournagh andBlarney. With the re-alignment of roadways, many old bridges, which aretaken for granted, are being knocked and replaced by modern ones. Oneexceptional case is ‘The Gothic Bridge’ on the outskirts of Blarney. Thisbridge, which is located at the base of the Killard Road at the rear of TheScout Hall, has been spared the developer’s hammer and its beautifulornamentation is well worth a second glance. Many small factories andwater powered mills once flourished along the banks of these rivers and

many of their ruins are still visible. Each one has its own varied andinteresting story, fairly easily researched. What is the story behind the oldfish weirs or dams or the springs and holy wells, such as All Saints Well?Well worth investigating! The Blarney District, being noted for its limestone content, has manyold lime kilns built near its rivers. Most were built around the early 1800’sand can be seen on the early Ordnance Survey maps. Due to theNapoleonic Wars, when food was scarce, farmers ploughed more land tomeet the increased demand; large quantities of lime were needed tosweeten the earth for the extra crop production.Another thing that is pleasant and interesting to know about is themeaning of the name of the place where you live. As words andpronunciations change over a period of time and names get transformed,place-names cannot always be taken to mean what they seem to mean. Forinstance, the name Blarney or Blárna means Little Field. Collins EnglishDictionary states that Blarney means deceitful talk, flattery, cajolery, coaxing or to deceive by smooth talk. An excellent book on the subject is‘Parish Histories and Place Names of West Cork’ by Bruno O’Donoghue. All of the local parishes and townlands are named and explained in gooddetail, with other unusual, and interesting, bits of information included aswell.Churches are another source of varied and interesting information. Theyew trees, which seem to be invariably planted in most church-yards, wereonce regarded as sacred. These trees which were worshipped by theancient pagans, before they became Christians, are believed to ward offevil spirits and also are said to be associated with longevity. The famousFlorence Court yew in Co. Fermanagh is claimed to be the source of mostornamental yews referred to as "Irish yew". Sometimes you will findgraves or headstones inside a church. These, almost always, belong to richpeople or to priests who had served faithfully in the parish. In olden days, poorer people’s graves were located within the churchyard but furthestaway from the church, while the wealthier were buried nearer to, or eveninside, the building, with the priests often being buried in front of the altaritself. A prime example being the grave, at the epistle side of the altar ofSt. Mary’s Church, Waterloo, of Father Matt Horgan. Many of theseheadstones within the churches will give a brief history of the personburied beneath with, perhaps, a carving of a face or some other symbol oremblem placed above the plaque. Eventually, when there was no moreburial room left within the churchyards, new separate graveyards had to befound.Carvings of doves, lambs, dragons, serpents and many other birds andanimals as well as plants and trees have religious meanings and are to befound in all sorts of nooks and crannies, high up and low down, within thechurch. The stained glass windows, if looked at properly, can also tell alittle bit of local or religious history. The above is just a little of what can be discovered in your local area. Soby taking your notebook or camera with you and strolling around thelocality, looking and finding, a whole new and rewarding interest in yourlocal heritage can be opened up to you.

An interesting addition to your new-found hobby might be to becomea member of the local Blarney and District Historical Society whichpresents a series of interesting and topical lectures and field trips eachyear. This month, July 2015, the Society is celebrating thirty years inexistence, being founded in July 1985. In that time, it has presented almost four hundred lectures and field trips, produced nine ‘Old Blarney’ journals, with number ten due to be launched later thisyear, as well as four ‘Old Blarney’ photo-journals. Back numbers ofthese journals are available by contacting Brian Gabriel on 087-2153216 or at our advertised, monthly meetings.

Our A.G.M. takes place on 10th September 2015 at 8.00 p.m. in ScoilMhuire Gan Smál (Blarney Secondary School). All are welcome to attend.

June has been a total blur! It was a very drymonth and we had to start watering a lot of ournewly planted areas which meant that the weedsalso got a boost. Growth rates increasedsignificantly over the last few weeks and we havebeen literally run off our feet trying to keep up.Our students and volunteers are a big help in keeping things lookinggood at this time of year.Over the last few years we have added significantly to our summer

colour, and there’s now something of impact almost everywhere youlook. The roses are amazing throughout the gardens. The TropicalBorder and Poison Garden are both looking great and the HerbaceousBorders are spectacular! One feature that's often missed are the flowerson trees in our arboretums. Our Liriodendron tulipifera or Tulip Tree iscurrently in full flower in the lower arboretum. The new Seven Sisters garden is starting to take shape and I’m

impatient to see how it looks once all of the grasses mature. The nextstep will be planting bulbs through the grass beds and woodland areas inthe autumn. In the glasshouses our peaches have ripened and the nectarines, apricotsand grapes are all coming along nicely. Pretty good crops all round. Thestrawberries were slow this year but seem to be picking up now that wehave had a little rain. Our new rows of raspberry and loganberry canesare looking good too. There will be plenty of summer fruits ice creammade this year!Jobs for July will include pinching out tomatoes and cucumbers side

shoots, thinning growth on our grape vines and also thinning the fruit toimprove the overall crop. Ongoing watering and feeding is veryimportant. We feed every second week with phostrogen for theornamentals and seaweed for the vegetables. In this dry weather youshould make sure the plant has been watered prior to feeding it so that itdoes not take up too much too quick. Hedge clipping will be a big jobhere over the next few weeks. It’s always nice to get the fluff back offand tidy things up a bit. Now is a good time for taking cuttings in the garden. Many shrubs will

root readily and it’s a good way of increasing your plants without theexpense. I always encourage plant swapping and if you have a fewspares then it gives you something to bargain with. We will be takingcuttings from a lot of our rarer trees and shrubs over the summer andautumn. Not only will it give us material for swapping with othergardens, but it will also act as a back-up stock should one of the motherplants die.Blarney in Bloom is on Saturday 11th July from 10am – 5pm and

promises to be a great event. There’s a huge amount going on around theestate including specialist plant nurseries, garden equipment and afarmers market, family orienteering, birds of prey, garden talks, arts andcrafts demonstrations and children’s entertainment. It will be a greatvalue family day out and of course all will benefit a very worthy charity,Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. Adam

Thetwo lads had a good game for Cork with Mark Coleman getting man ofthe match scoring seven points in total, three from play.

U16s Have Perfect Start To Their Hurling Championship. On a dampand foggy evening in Delaneys, a venue Blarney haven't had muchsuccess in on recent visits, our U16 Hurlers outplayed Douglas on ascoreline of 3-20 to 0-3 in the Premier 2 Hurling Championship. An early brace of goals by Blarney Full Forward Eamon O’Mahonyseparated by a James Dineen point was as a perfect start for the Blarneylads. The Douglas free taker struggled to judge the wind as his earlyefforts drifted wide but Blarney free taker Barry Dennehy was on form, splitting the posts with his first two frees before adding a third point fromplay. Blarney dominated the puck outs and held the majority of possession

throughout the first half. Blarney worked the ball up the field through themidfield partnership of Eoin Hyland and Conor Power. The Full Forwardline made the most of these chances, scoring themselves or winning freesfor Dennehy. At the interval Blarney led 2-9 to 0-2. Blarney started the second half as fast as the first, Eamon O’Mahonyscored a point within a minute and following this Declan Hanlon scoredback to back points from the right flank. Eoin Hyland won a resultingpuck out and subsequently added his name to the score sheet. As the game wore on, it was clear that Brian Walsh was a dominate forceat Centre Back, mopping up the ball throughout the match. He was theplatform that allowed the team to attack with confidence. The rearguarddealt well with everything that came their way and were great support tothe half-backs. Hanlon and Dineen continued the scoring in the second half adding two

points each to their tallies to finish up with 4 and 5 points respectively, butthe attacking performance of the game went to Eamon O’Mahony. Headded 1-2 in the second half to completed his hatttick and finished thegame with a resounding 3-3. Substitute Shane Barrett tagged on a point with a few minutes to go

before Conor Power had the final say with a point from midfield. Thisfinal point meant the scored finished Blarney 3-20 Douglas 0-3. Well done to all involved!

U21 Hurlers Proceed To Next Round. The pitch was in great conditionon the 23rd of June last in Ovens where Blarney took on Ballinora in thefirst round of the Muskerry U21 Hurling Championship. There were a fewchanges to the starting fifteen from the match program with Kevin Cre-men and Darragh Kelly making the starting line up.Blarney started the brighter team and were two points up after four min-utes thanks to Kevin Cremen and Conor Forde. It was a low scoring open-ing quarter where with the scoreboard reading 4 points to 2 after 16minutes. As the half progressed Blarney found their rhythm with Cremenhitting over another point before Shane Mulcahy broke through the Balli-nora defence to finish well for a Blarney goal. Mark Coleman pointed a 65 metre free soon after to leave the half timescore Blarney 1-6 Ballinora 0-3Blarney playing with the wind in the second half started well with apointed free from Coleman and Cremen scoring another from play. How-ever on the 9th minute of the half, corner forward Michael John Shine re-ceived a red card born out of frustration from the previous play. Ballinora, last year's U21 B champions, did not capitalise on Blarneybeing reduced to 14 men. Blarney still dominated possession and pickedoff their points as the half progressed with Sean Crowley, Shane Mulcahyand David Dunlea all contributing to the score sheet. Junior Hurlers Win Replay. On the 17th of June last, Blarney defeatedlocal neighbours Inniscarra in the first round replay of the Muskerry Jun-ior A hurling championship. Both sides ended all square a few weeks backin Donoughmore and it was another close encounter in Coachford yester-day evening. The game started slowly with both teams taking time to settle into the

game. After 10 minutes it was 2 points to one in favour of Inniscarra, withBlarney's only score coming from a Michael John Shine free. Five min-utes later Owen O'Connor scored a fine point from distance to level thegame. Daniel Cronin and Sean Twomey showed their experience to leadboth back lines to keep the Inniscarra forwards at bay.Blarney began to settle more into the game with Shine hitting over anothercouple of frees, while Conor Ford showed pace and skill to hit over apoint from the left wing. It was tit for tat for the remainder of the first half, with Ford hitting over his second point of the half just short of half time.On the 30th minute, Blarney were dealt a blow when Ross McNamara leftthe field injured, replaced by Ray Murphy who returned to action after fin-ishing his exams. The half time scoreline read Blarney 0-7 Inniscarra 0-5.

The second half started with a flurry of points from both sides. RayMurphy, Shine leading the way and then Anthony O'Shea hitting over afine point 7 and half minutes in. Blarney had quality players at their dis-posal on the bench with Peter Philpott, Cormac O'Mahony and KevinCremin all introduced within 15 minutes of the restart. On the 18th minute Shine opened his account from play while also puttingBlarney up by one. The scoreboard read Blarney 11 points Inniscarra 10.Kevin Cremin brought the Blarney following to their feet with a fine scorefrom the right wing, a score which brought confidence to the whole team.Blarney kicked on from that score with Peter Philpott pointing a 65 metrefree, Ray Murphy scoring from play on the 28th minute and Shine againpopping over a free with one minute remaining. Blarney 0-16 Inniscarra0-12
