What an end to a fantastic year inScoil Chroí Íosa. Amalgamation hasproven to be a huge success as theschool has come up trumps manytimes in the last few weeks.
Scoil Chroí Íosa girls done us proud with theiroutstanding performance in the recent Sciathna Scol final against Rathcormac in Pairc UíChaoimh. With continuous winningperformances throughout the journey to thefinal, confidence levels were high on the day. With a hat-trick from Sarah Holland there wasno fear of defeat. Well Done girls, many morevictories to look forward to in the future. We had an exceptional year in Cork Citysports this year with a total of 10 trophies.Well done to all who took part on the day.Usain Bolt watch out!
Our school Polytunnel was erected lastweek. A big ‘Thank You’ is due from all hereat Scoil Chroí Íosa to the second year pupilsfrom Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Tom McGrathand his colleagues from Blarney Tidy Towns,Stephen Sewell who oversaw the project fromstart to finish and Adam and Chris from
Blarney Castle. The school are indebted to SirCharles Colthurst for sponsoring the tunnel.
We recently enjoyed some new fun-filledactivities to promote our Active School Week, activities included Break-time Challenges,Principal Penalties, Bike safety and Walk onWednesday (WOW).
The highlight of the week was mostdefinitely the ‘Flash mob’ performance in thesquare on Friday. Curiosity got the better ofthe locals which drew them to the green forthe lively performance of the ‘Cha Cha Slide.’Check out youtube if you were unfortunateenough to have missed it.
The staff and students of Scoil Chroí Íosawould like to extend their deepest and sinceresympathy to the Linehan family on the recentpassing of Annette Linehan. Our thoughts andsympathies are with them at this difficult time.

Sport with Muskerry DashThe Muskerry Hunt articles published in earlier issues of theMuskerry News drew a large number of requests for onefurther item, so here it is!The ferocity of the east wind gripping the English countryside was tempered bythe time it reached Co. Cork It still did no favours to the Muskerry Houndswhen they met at Aghabulloge and the conditions were frustrating for a packwhich had enjoyed great sport this season. However, we were fortunate to behunting at all and in Ireland there is never a dull moment for one is always onthe move. The Muskerry is one of the few packs of hounds in the British Isles still bred
on the old English foxhounds lines. It is the oldest pack in Ireland and wasformed in 1742 by Mr. John Rye. He kennelled hounds at Rye Court, Farnanes, and they returned there in 1980, through the generosity of his descendant MissRosaleen Tonson-Rye. Long periods of mastership have guided these houndswhich hunt the lovely rolling country to the west of Cork City. For two seasons,1879-81, hunting ceased due to the land league agitation and hounds went toCannes in the South of France. On their return in 1882, the masterships wereheld for the next 16 years by cavalry officers stationed at Ballincollig Barracks. The 20 years between the wars saw only two masterships: those of Major A
Hornby and Sir George Colthurst; and for more than 40 years the pack has beenclosely associated with the Mahony family. In 1943 the late Major ErnestMahony assumed the mastership with his late and much-lamented son, Jack, who died in 1985. Father and son were Masters, with Jack hunting hounds from1959, until he went to the Galway ‘Blazers’ in 1972. Until he died his was theguiding hand of the Hunt and he bred the hounds which were kennelled at hisfamily home, Cloghroe. The Muskerry’s long links with the Mahonys wereborne out by the presence of four generations at the meet. Mrs. Ernest Mahony, aged 95 years, was car following and her son, Mr. Craufurd Mahony, a formerJoint-Master, was also on foot. Mounted were her daughter-in-law, Mrs. JackMahony, as devoted to the Muskerry Hunt as her late husband was; her grand-daughter, Mrs. Nicholas Westendarp, and her great-grand-daughter, MissClodagh Leavy. (A notable feature of Irish packs is the number of women whohave carried the horn.)Mrs. Westendarp, became the Joint-Master in 1977, joining Mrs. RonnieMurphy who has been one since 1974. Their untiring work, in which theyassisted by Mr. Nicholas Westendarp, the secretary, ensures the Hunt’s success.Ireland’s agriculture has advanced dramatically during the past decade. In
such a forward climate hunting has to stop early and most packs do not huntafter St. Patrick’s Day. But, on this occasion, in extremely dry conditions, therewas hardly a hoof-mark to be seen – a relief for the Masters but not for thehounds and huntsman for it was a fickle scenting day. There is plenty of goodfox cover. The sharp green patchwork of small fields lies beneath the hill-topscovered in rocks and gorse and there are wild stretches of bog-land from whichstartled snipe flit away as hounds draw through. The depredations of those whoseek pelts have fortunately diminished as the lure of high prices has gone.Finbarr Murray, huntsman since 1983, had 131/2 couple on. Most were first andsecond season hounds because two years ago the pack was decimated byrunning on to land on which there was poisoned meat. It was a great credit toMurray that his young pack was so steady and persevered unceasingly for himall day. He is a protégé of the Mahony family, having been in kennels since hewas a boy, and he takes the opportunity to add to his experience by hunting thelocal harriers on Sundays. There were only 12 mounted followers to see hounds find a brace in
Bishop’s Bog behind the village. The vixen quickly found safety in a stone-faced bank. Murray, in addition to Mrs. Westendarp’s help, has three tirelessfoot followers who also act as terrier-men. They were never out of touch andfrequently saw a fox away through some corner inaccessible to a mountedfollower. They spotted the dog fox away but he was marked to ground in aquarry after a short time.Coffey’s Bog seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see. Drawing wide, hounds deep voices came back to us on the chill wind, indicating a fox afoot.Murray saw him leave the westerly end of the bog and hounds had a good startup the boreen. Turning out on to the hill above, they checked in the wind. Thereis not much tillage is this country but here two fields of dry plough were afurther hindrance as the huntsman had his hounds on. They hit the line off left-handed back to the bog but no more could be done. The next draw was Mr. Sean Twomey’s farm. There is always a welcome for
the Muskerry when they draw the rocky scrub on the mountain above his neatdairy pastures. To the west, the mountains were topped with snow and the bitingwind brought flurries of snow into our faces. There was a fox but he needed theutmost persuasion to leave the warmth of the scrub. Mrs. Westendarp viewedhim making for the road where he was headed back. Eventually hounds forcedhim to leave upwind. Mrs. Murphy on her sharp grey showed us the way oversome stone-faced banks, the stone rattling behind us. Away on the right, Mrs.Fergus Sutherland was taking her own line. Hounds were a mile away by thetime we reached the road. They then swung back to Tom Murphy’s Mountainand we heard Murray blowing to ground. At 3.15, hounds found again in Mr.Chucky Twomey’s bog. It was a start full of promise that raised our hopes for anevening hunt. We scrambled and pushed to catch up, but as we reached the roadthe hounds were marked in a big sand earth.Mrs. Murphy decided it was time for home. Murray was not able to reward
his hounds as there is an agreement with the local harriers who hunt the countryon Sundays that foxes will not be dug – a legacy from the seasons when foxeswere hard to find. Hunting is an absorbing passion in Co. Cork; there arereputed to be some 18 packs of harriers hunting on Sundays and co-operation isimportant. That the Masters can count on great support was underlined by thefact that Mr. Jim Willis, a local farmer, and Mr. Peter Musgrave had, withoutbeing asked, gone back to repair the banks. They returned to report all well aswe tried to raise our body temperatures with the traditional hot whiskey whichevery bar in Ireland will serve to the hunting man.

We all know the grind of cleaning up afterourselves…well it’s even worse when you haveto clean up after someone else! The Muskerry News and Blarney Tidy Towns are delighted toannounce the launch of ‘An Bhlarna Award’ which serves toacknowledge those in the community who do their bit in thecampaign to keep Blarney litter free.
This award is in recognition of individuals and businesses inBlarney who play their part in our anti-litter campaign by justpicking up rubbish, even when it isn’t theirs! Blarney takes littervery seriously and has worked very hard to climb the rankings inThe Tidy Towns competition. Tom McGrath and his team ofvolunteers have made huge efforts to improve the look and feel ofour village and surrounds, to the benefit of tourists and residentsalike. Unfortunately we are not all litter intolerant and the reality isthat a lot of our litter is home grown. Education goes a long way andif we get through our school years and are still littering, the onlyanswer is zero tolerance and a hefty fine!
It was so frustrating to see this in action after our most recentcommunity clean up prior to the Tidy Towns judging. Littereverywhere! We had been planning to go and get some bags andgloves to clear it, then lo and behold….out comes the crew at TheBlarney Launderette and with a few sweeps of the brush, the rubbishwas removed! Wouldn’t it be just fantastic if we all took care of thepatch outside our own front door? It seems such a small thing butcollectively adds up a very clean Blarney. We feel it’s time toacknowledge the many that do just that… and even better …copythem! This month’s inaugural An Bhlarna Award is sponsored by
www.irishmadegifts.com and goes to Blarney Dry Cleaners andLaundry Can you think of anyone better to kick off this monthlyanti- litter award than a company that specialises in cleaning? Wethink not. If you have any suggestions for next month’s award be they man, woman, child or business just drop us a line here [email protected].
In June we had several cleanups in the River Martin along thestretch on the Waterloo Road. Shane Carroll started a cleanup in theriver some months back, and so far, in excess of 30 bags of assortedrubbish has been removed. Much of the material had been washeddown when the river was in flood, and became entangled in thebranches of fallen trees. The results of the 2nd period of judging in the Anti-LitterChallenge saw a great improvement over the first period. We havemoved up a place, and in the process, achieved the 4th highest marks inthe county. So lets keep up the good work. Why not bring a small bagand gloves with you as you go for a walk/run. We have had a numberof takers for this activity over the last few months, some saying that it'sbetter than therapy!June also saw the addition of another planted area on the relief
road.Who would have thought that we would be asking for volunteers tohelp with watering plants in Blarney? Thanks to the hot weather, wehad to do this, and we got a great response from many people.Particular thanks to Adrian O'Connell who supplied us with a 1000 litrecontainer of water for this job.One of our Tidy Towns volunteers recently witnessed a person stopher car and then proceed to dump 3 bags of rubbish at the side ofthe road. Photographs were taken of the bags and car registrationnoted. The matter has been reported to the Gardaí and is being broughtto the attention of the County Council, Environmental Section who arecurrently pursuing same. We sincerely hope that this will lead to actionagainst this kind of activity.

St. Lachteen's National School, Donoughmore recentlycelebrated receiving their second Green Flag at a reception heldat Silversprings Hotel. The flag was raised by Cork City F.C.player Colin Healy and the occasion was marked by a celebrationof pupils, teachers and parents. The Green Schools Commiteecomprised of pupils from each class have worked tirelessly underthe guidance of Ms. Susan O' Hanlon for the past school year inpreparation for getting their second green flag. Energy conservationwas the main focus for this green flag and pupils put in atremendous amount of work to ensure lights were switched off andelectrical items were unplugged when not being used. The pupils had a second reason to celebrate on the day also, asthey had been planning to make a surprise presentation to theschool principal Ms. Deirdre Kelleher on her upcomingwedding in July. The pupils had been excited about their littlesecret and were relieved to finally reveal the surprise they had beenkeeping with the help of their teachers. The teachers, staff, pupilsand parents wish Deirdre and her fiance Ger the very best for thefuture and hope their wedding day will be filled with cherishedmoments.Meanwhile the school were thrilled to have had the opportunityto establish links with a school from Freshford Co. Kilkenny,Scoil Lachtain over the past few months. The Kilkenny schoolwere interested in developing a relationship with a Cork schoollinked to the same saint as themselves, St. Lachteen. Pupils fromboth schools have been exchanging letters and learning about eachothers schools, lives and counties. The pupils are delighted to havea pen pal from Kilkenny. As part of the twinning of the two schoolsand in keeping with The Gathering 2013 Scoil Lachtain visited St.
Lachteen's N.S. for their school tour. Their visit coincided with theannual school sports day in Donoughmore and great fun was hadwhen the schools amalgamated to take part in the schedueledsporting events. As part of The Gathering the Kilkenny schoolpresented the Donoughmore school with a beautiful framed sketchof St. Lachtin's Arm, the logo which features on the school crest inDonoughmore and is also the crest for Donoughmore GAA andCommunity Centre. Both schools are united in their historic link toSt. Lachteen, and students felt very proud to be gathered together inrecognition of their patron saint. An end of year celebration to mark the graduation of 6th classpupils took place on Tuesday 17th June. Parish priest Fr. O'Riordan and Fr. Downey concelebrated the mass at St. Lachteen'sChurch and prayed for the pupils as they make the transition fromprimary to secondary school. A graduation ceremony was heldfollowing the mass in the school hall and certificates werepresented to the pupils by Millstreet teenager Joanne O'Riordan. Aspart of a class project organised by Mrs. Mairead Harrington, a 4thclass student Maeve Barrett, had written a letter to Joanne and wasthrilled to receive a letter of reply from the North Cork girl whohas total amelia and was born without limbs. Maeve went one stepfurther and invited Joanne to their school as she is seen as acelebrity by pupils in Donoughmore owing to her "no limbs nolimits" attitude to life. Pupils were delighted to meet Joanne andfound her words of encouragement on the day to be very inspiring.A very busy and successful school year has come to an end. Thestaff of St. Lachteen's wish their graduating pupils the very bestwhen they begin their secondary school journey in September andwish all of their pupils a great summer.

June has been a pretty good month here in the gardens. We have hadplenty of sun, and actually had to start watering a lot of our newlyplanted areas. Growth rates increased significantly over the last fewweeks and our herbaceous borders are now starting to lookimpressive.
In the glasshouses our peaches have ripened and the nectarines, apricots and grapes are all coming along nicely. Pretty good crops allround. The strawberries did well this year and by planting a batchindoors we extended our fruiting season. We used old guttering hungfrom the roof supports of our poly tunnel. It used very little space andprovided a perfect growing environment. There will be plenty of jammade this year!
We have just completed the rebuilding of the banks at the Himalayanwalk. This had previously been excavated and used as a dump andstorage area. It was a bit of an eye sore and a large mature yew treewas suffering as a result of exposed roots. We needed to bring in 200tonnes of soil to bring the levels back up to match the rest of the area. Now all that remains is the planting up. We will be putting nativetrees at the back of the bank, and rhododendrons along the front.
Jobs for July will include pinching out tomatoes and cucumbers sideshoots, thinning growth on our grape vines and also thinning the fruitto improve the overall crop. Ongoing watering and feeding is veryimportant. We feed every second week with phostrogen for theornamentals and seaweed for the vegetables. In this dry weather youshould make sure the plant has been watered prior to feeding it so thatit does not take up too much too quick. Hedge clipping will be a bigjob here over the next few weeks. It’s always nice to get the fluff backoff and tidy things up a bit. We will also be summer pruning in theorchard later this month.
Now is a good time for taking cuttings in the garden. Many shrubswill root readily and it’s a good way of increasing your plants withoutthe expense. I always encourage plant swapping and if you have a fewspares then it gives you something to bargain with. We will be takingcuttings from a lot of our rarer trees and shrubs over the summer andautumn. Not only will it give us material for swapping with othergardens, but it will also act as a back-up stock should one of themother plants die.
Blarney in Bloom was on Saturday 13th July from 10am – 5pm andwas a great event. For those that missed it, there was a huge amountgoing on around the estate including specialist plant nurseries, gardenequipment and a farmers market, family orienteering, birds of prey, garden talks, arts and crafts demonstrations and children’sentertainment. It was a great value family day out and of course all tothe benefit a very worthy charity, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.Same again next year!
I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. Adam

Brighter, Whiter Smiles! Our Smile is often the first thing others notice. Whiter, brighter teeth can give us moreconfidence and make that smile all the more ready to appear. A beautiful smile is nowmuch more readily achieved than ever before. The first stage to obtaining a beautiful smile is to ensure that the teeth and gums are
healthy. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up so that any cavities or gum problems canbe treated early before they turn into bigger problems. The sooner problems are detectedthe simpler they are to treat and the less noticeable they will appear. Everybody with PRSIcover and a Medical Card (over 16 years old) is entitled to a free dental check up once ayear. There are many causes of tooth discolouration. The most common are smoking, coffee,
tea and red wine. An extensive scale and polish can sometimes remove the majority ofthese stains without any further treatment required. Deeper more extensive discolourationhowever may require further treatment such as tooth whitening.Tooth Whitening is suitable for most people as long as the teeth and gums are healthy.
So called whitening products are available in the supermarkets and Pharmacies, these havebeen found to have limited affects on discolouration due to the amount of bleaching agentcontained. EU directives have limited the strength of whitening agents sold over thecounter to less than a tenth of that which can be prescribed by your dentist. The steps involved in tooth whitening are simple. Impressions of your teeth are taken by
your dentist from which special custom fitting trays (like thin mouthguards) are made.Whitening gel is then placed in your custom trays which fit snugly over your teeth. Thewhitening gel breaks down and oxygen ‘dissolves’ the stains inside your teeth. You canwear the trays when you want to, over night or any time during the day. The whitening gelis available in different strengths and your dentist can recommend the best product to suityour teeth and lifestyle. Everybody’s teeth will whiten at different rates but on averageexcellent results are obtained after about 5-14 days. The results will last indefinitelyalthough can be refreshed when required if restaining occurs (coffee/tea/smoking!)Clinical studies have shown that bleaching using this method is safe for teeth and gums. Aminority of people may experience temporary sensitivity to hot and cold.

If you suffer with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, you know how demanding life can be.
One fibromyalgia patient said it like this…
“For people who take good health for granted,it’s hard to imagine a condition that makessimple tasks great tests of will anddetermination.”
Contrary to what some people believe, you'renot lazy or crazy. Fibromyalgia is a real diseasewith real pain.
Maybe your past doctors don't even thinkfibromyalgia is a real disease, but you know itis. You feel it every day -- when you wake up inthe morning, when you try to keep your housecleaned...even simple tasks like cooking dinnerbecome a chore.
Mark Pelligrino, MD (author of The FibromyalgiaSurvivor), reported that after studying over2,000 fibromyalgia patients files, he found two-thirds of fibromyalgia patients started havingsymptoms after a traumatic event like a caraccident, work injury, or a fall.
Another study published in the 1997 issue ofArthritis And Rheumatism, said fibromyalgia is13 times more likely to occur following neckinjury than following a leg injury.
Prescription drugs are at best "masking tape"that covers up the daily warning signs of apainful disease.
Pain pills, even over-the-counter medications, don’t fix the cause of your problem. They maybe necessary for a momentary crisis, but usingthem long term is no way to live. Many of thesepain medications are quite addicting and havevery real side effects.
Have you been everywhere, tried everything, and are still suffering?
Fibromyalgia is often called the invisibledisease. You look fine on the surface, butunderneath you’re often exhausted and inexcruciating pain.
My name is Dr. Eric Kelly, owner of GlanmireChiropractic Clinic. Over the past ten years I’veused gentle treatments to help thousands offibromyalgia and chronic fatigue patients feelbetter and live healthier, more joyful lives.
Because of this, I’m running a special offer forwomen with fibromyalgia.
For 15 days only, €40 will get you all theservices I normally charge new patients upto€265 for!
What does this offer include?
• An in-depth consultation about your healthand well-being where I will listen…reallylisten…to the details of your case.• A complete neuromuscular examination.• A full set of specialized x-rays to determine ifa spinal problem is contributing to your pain orsymptoms… (NOTE: These would normally costyou up to €195).• A thorough analysis of your exam and x-rayfindings so we can start mapping out your planto being pain free.• I’ll provide answers to all your most probingquestions about fibromyalgia
The offer is only good until August 2nd. Theappointment will not take long at all and youwon't be sitting in a waiting room all day either.
Finally, A Proven SolutionFor Fibromyalgia Pain
Numerous studies have shown the benefits ofchiropractic care in fibromyalgia patients.
Dr. Frederick Wolfe, a well-known investigator offibromyalgia and clinical professor at theUniversity of Kansas School of Medicine, ran astudy on fibromyalgia.
He asked patients to indicate drug or alternativetreatments that best relieved their pain.
Dr. Wolfe found that changes in lifestyle workedbetter than drugs and stated “Chiropractictreatment also scored among the most effectivemeasures.”
Another study examined the effectiveness of
chiropractic in relieving fibromyalgia symptoms.
After just a few chiropractic treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered from less painand fatigue, and actually enjoyed bettersleep.(JMPT 2000)
And best of all, there will be…
No Harmful Drugs, No Uncertain Procedures,And No Intimidation.
Call 021-4824450 anytime between the hoursof 7:30 am and 6:00 pm Monday through Friday.Tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for theSpecial Fibromyalgia Evaluation before August2nd.
I look forward to helping you get rid of yourpain so you can start living a healthier, morejoyful life.
Sincerely,Dr. Eric Kelly D.C.
P.S. Imagine how great you could feel withoutyour constant fatigue and nagging pains.Imagine waking up each morning, jumping outof bed, and enjoying the day…no more wakingup and feeling like you got hit by a truck.
Imagine not having to take handfuls of painpills that haven’t helped much and havedangerous side effects.
What would it feel like to finally have hopeagain? Call today 021-4824450
If you suffer from Fibromyalgia orchronic fatigue there is hope.
If You Suffer From Fibromyalgia,It's Not Your Fault!
Do You Have Any of theFollowing Symptoms?• Aching all over• Disturbed sleep• Tender points in the
neck & shoulders• Recurring headaches• Fatigue & Stiffness
Now in Glanmire, a local clinic is helping fibromyalgia sufferers have less pain, more energy, and enjoy life.
Clinical studies have shown the majority of fibromyalgia patients started having symptoms after atraumatic event like a car accident, work injury, or a fall.
