OCTOBER: PASTOR PETER’S PEN

Pastor Peter’s Pen

So I went to the potter’s house, and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at his wheel. Whenever

the pot the potter was working on turned out badly, as sometimes happens when you are working with clay,

the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot. Then God’s Message came to me:

“Can’t I do just as this potter does…(Jeremiah 18:3-5)

If you have ever sat at the potter’s wheel, there is something deeply satisfying about working, kneading and

shaping the clay that eventually makes a pot. It begins with a process of refining through repeated lifting and

pressing until the air pockets are expelled and clay is ready to be shaped. It takes a lot of practice to get the

shape you have in your head to transfer through your fingers and palms into the pot you have imagined.

More often than not, you find yourself starting over, gathering the clay in a mound again, purifying it, and

readying it to be shaped once again. The Church is going through exactly such a time, as it has over and over

again, refining, repenting, shrinking, before God reshapes it again, giving it new life.

These truly are exciting times we live in. As Christianity and faith in general slide into a morass, quickly

becoming an insignificant voice in an increasingly secularized world, we are faced with ever new and changing

possibilities for being Christ’s Church into the next decade and century. We are seeing a declining and aging

membership across all denominations. We watch as the moral legitimacy of the church’s voice is brought into

question by actions on all sides of the religious spectrum. It may be difficult for us to see how we as a small

congregation along 6A in West Barnstable can possibly be affected by the noise currently in the news. But the

average person hearing the news does not distinguish among churches; for most people “Christian” constitutes

the Roman Catholic Church and Evangelical Churches, and they believe all Christians must somehow fall under

one of those categories. So now, more than ever, we are challenged with preaching the Gospel as it has been

handed down to us through the ages.

Throughout the scriptures God demands of us singleness of heart, calling us to the Father through Christ by

being Christ to one another. We have been blinded over the years by any number of programs that focus on

gaining numbers rather than serving those whom we have been called to serve. Do we have the best choir, the

best Sunday School, is all we need a nursery, or is the need for any other model programs that grow churches?

All are often done with the focus in the wrong place. We have defied God’s commands and the priestly

prayer of Jesus, seeking division and greatness instead of humility and unity. We have siloed ourselves in

our denominations, not allowing the voice of the Gospel to be seen in our actions, as well as heard in our words.

We are living in a time when the potter is obviously refining the Church: pushing us down

and squeezing the very last air bubble out of the clay. But we trust the potter is in charge, and we

trust that resurrection is promised. As we are in the midst of this time of repentance, we have the

opportunity to return to what we have been called: to preach the Gospel of Jesus, the revealer of

God’s way of mercy, justice, and love. In that spirit we also have the opportunity to ask ourselves

how are we living as an intentional community with one another, serving instead of seeking to be

served, loving instead of seeking to be loved. I do not profess to know exactly HOW we will look in

the next 10,15, or 20 years. I do know we have to heed God’s call to worship the Father through

serving our neighbor. The church of the future may be much smaller in size, but it will be stronger in

following The Way. The potter’s intent is clear: to create the most stunning vessel the world has ever

known, the kingdom of God.

Brief service of Morning Prayer

For the month of October, we will be experimenting with a 30 minute service of Morning Prayer. This will be a mostly spoken service with no musical accompaniment. It will be offered on the fol-lowing Sundays: October 7, 14, 21. Reformation Sunday will have just one service at 10:00. We will determine at that time if the 8:00 am will continue based on numbers and need.

Position Description for a Partner in Ministry

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Barnstable and First Lutheran Church of West Barnstable are seeking

a full-time partner in ministry to serve with the people of both congregations, our pastor, and our

rector. We are growing, vibrant, multi-generational congregations located near Hyannis on Cape Cod

and have created a joint position as a witness to the power of ecumenical partnerships. Cape Cod is a

retirement destination so both congregations are blessed with members who have rich life experiences

and a desire to serve in our community. We also have intense pastoral care needs, and see an ordained

person to help our leadership and staff respond to the opportunities and needs before us. Among other

attributes, we seek a partner in ministry who is:

•An excellent preacher, proclaiming God’s love for all of God’s children in creative and relevant

sermons;

•A lively liturgist, leading worship in a variety of styles with ease and joy;

•A caring pastor, praying and serving with our lay pastoral care teams as we reach out to our

100+ members who are eighty-years or older, those facing various illnesses and approaching the

end of life, and their families who are for them;

•An active advocate for the most vulnerable members of our community, especially the elderly,

grieving, ill, imprisoned, homeless, and hungry.

First Lutheran and St. Mary’s offer diverse worship services ranging from more traditional Anglican/

Lutheran worship to a creative Wednesday evening liturgy at First Lutheran. The successful candidate

will have a love for their own tradition, an openness to learning the liturgy of the other tradition, and

flexibility in both settings. Our vestry, council, and clergy have lead the congregations through much

change in recent years, and the Spirit has opened our minds and hearts to fresh expressions of church.

As we live into our gospel callings, we seek to express the joy and hope that we find in embracing our

identity as beloved children of God. For more information, please visit our websites www.flccapecod.org

and www.stmarys-church.org

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and diocesan / synod guidelines. The call will

be issued within the denomination of ordination and previous service to ensure continuity of health care

and pension benefits. To be considered for the position, please submit a cover letter, current resume, and

two recent sermons (one of which should be an audio or video file) to the Rev. Dr. Libby Gibson

([email protected]) and Rev. Peter Hebert ([email protected]) by October 31, 2018.

GODLY PLAY

HELP WANTED! We are looking for Godly Play® DOOR PERSONS!!

Doesn’t sound glamorous? Let us explain….

Do you love kids? Do you want to know more about how Godly Play® works? Do you want to be inspired by this creative and well-tested faith development program?

The DOOR PERSON is the all-important second adult in the room.

You will assist the Storyteller, as follows:

- greet parents in the hallway (yes, you are actually “posted” at the door - thus the glamorous name!)

- help children to “Get Ready” to enter the Godly Play® circle

- act as a mentor, model certain behaviors, and manage distractions

- support the storyteller in wondering about the lesson

- organize use of the Godly Play® workspace

- assist the children in their work and in their preparation of "the feast"

- say goodbye to the children and conduct a quick post-review with the Storyteller

YOU DO NOT NEED TO LEARN OR TELL THE STORIES! - But you will love hearing them, and we dare you not to get engaged in the wondering!

You do not need to be a parent or a teacher or a biblical scholar - ANYONE is invited to join us!

YOU CAN VISIT US AS A SIDELINE GUEST TO SEE IF THIS OPPORTUNITY IS FOR YOU! (Please schedule ahead)

You will definitely be given the opportunity to work side-by-side with a veteran, as training! (Any time after October 10th.)

We are looking for a commitment of ONE or more lessons!!!! (whatever works for you!)

IF INTERESTED, please see Kathy Speroni, OR email: [email protected] - OR text or call: 774-128-6147 (be sure to leave a message).

Kim Moberg & Heather Sherburne Swanson

Bring a dessert to share!

Kim Moberg is an award winning Singer/Songwriter born in Juneau, Alaska. She is the daughter of a classical pianist mother of Alaskan Native Tlingit descent and a US Coast Guard veteran father from Kansas. Music has always been an integral part of Kim's life, helping her to adjust to the frequent moves associated with growing up in a military family. At the age of 14, Kim began playing acoustic guitar on a borrowed nylon 6 string, earning lessons by typing lyric and chord sheets for students who were taking guitar lessons from her mother. A few years later, she purchased a Gibson Epiphone guitar and taught herself to strum and finger pick to her favorite music by the singer/songwriters of the 1970’s, but debilitating stage fright kept her from pursuing her own dream of becoming a professional performer. In 2014, after a hiatus from music to raise her two daughters with her husband, Kim set out to overcome her stage fright at local open mics and fundrais-ers. . www.kimmobergmusic.com.

Heather Sherburne Swanson is a member of The Cape Violin Cello Duo; a member of The Suzuki Association of the Americas; an instructor and a participant at The Acadia School of Traditional Music and Arts; teaches at her Private Studio in Centerville and enjoys performing with her very talented friends and musical colleagues. www.capeviolincello.com

The Waves of Wellness team has been meeting

to discuss where and how God is calling this

ministry to be an integral part of life at First

Lutheran. It is the team’s hope to develop a

wellness clinic on Sunday mornings during

fellowship time. The nurses would offer blood

pressures and a general “Ask a RN” format.

As well we are hoping to introduce a “ride share”

concept to help people who don’t drive or need

transportation to and from church. In January the

WOW team will be hosting a Wellness Forum

Series to raise up topics relevant to enhancing

the quality of life of seniors. Stay tuned for more

details, if you have interest in being a part of this

exciting new ministry please see Pastor.

You filled the globe

Next challenge:

a Well: $2500.00

Current collection for

the well: $1000.50

Through your donations at worship we are

helping break the cycle of hunger & poverty.

Every Sunday, during offering time, our youth collect your

donations (dollar bills & loose coin) for the ‘piggy

bank’ (globe). Through your generosity a family farm has

been purchased ($715.00) and we are well on our way to

purchasing a well: $2500.00. This is no small feat!.

The lack of access to clean water is one of the biggest

challenges to overcoming poverty. It’s also one of the most

powerful opportunities to create change. With a simple well, or

spring box, as many as 500 families gain access to clean, safe

water. Communities are healthier. People spend less money on

medical expenses and more on food and education. And instead

of spending hours each day gathering water for the family,

women and children have time for work and school. Talk about

a future filled with hope!

According to Defense for Children International – Palestine,

“Israel has the dubious distinction

of being the only country in the world that

systematically prosecutes an estimated 500 to 700 children

each year in military (not civilian) courts lacking fundamen-

tal fair trial rights.” The sound of Rachel “weeping for her chil-

dren” can be heard in all Palestinian and Israeli mothers and

fathers who yearn for a better future for their children.

The time has come for all of us to respond to

Rachel “weeping for her children.” Tree of Life will amplify the

courageous work being done by human rights organizations as

they respond to this crisis.
