A full-sized luxury sedan capable of sub-6.0 second runs to 60 mph and fuel economy of 70 mpg or better may seem a little farfetched but it’s a promise Mercedes-Benz has made for its 2015 S500 Plug-In Hybrid, which made its world debut last month at the Frankfurt Auto Show and is due in showrooms in late 2014.

Drive comes from a hybrid drivetrain that consists of a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 connected in parallel with an electric mo-tor. The engine delivers 328 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque while the

electric motor adds an extra 80 kilowatts (107 horsepower) and 250 pound-feet of torque.

On a single charge of its 6.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, Mercedes estimates owners of the S500 Plug-In Hybrid will be able to drive for up to 18 miles with zero emissions. Owners can expect fuel economy in excess of 50 mpg if setting off with a fully charged battery. Despite this efficiency, the car still comes equipped with all the niceties one would expect in an S-Class.

Mercedes News

First I would like to thank Dan and Cheryl Kerbs for again host-ing our Sec-tion’s Drive-In Movie Night. Even though it rained most of the day and during the rally portion of the event, the weather

cleared up for dinner and the movie. Thanks also to the many Section mem-bers who helped in the food preparation and serving as well as the set-up and take-down. All the work contributed to the best attended Drive-In Movie Night yet.

This month, following breakfast at our new venue, The Egg and I, please travel with us up to Fort Collins, CO for a tour of

the Budweiser Brewery and Clydesdale Hamlet. It should be a fun trip and where else in Colorado can you sample a glass of draft while viewing a draft horse?

As you know, Colorado was hugely af-fected by the recent floods. Unfortunately, our Fall Drive to the Westfalen Hof res-taurant on Hwy 72 was cancelled when the road was washed out by the flood in Coal Creek Canyon. Please do what you can to help the victims in their time of need.

Finally, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Diana and Alec Pool, former members of the Pikes Peak Sec-tion. Diana and Alec were killed in a car accident on 22 September.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

2013 MBCA National Election

The latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s B-Class compact MPV has been confirmed for the U.S. market, launching early in the new year in electric guise only.

The current model, the second generation of the compact MPV, comes packed with a decent bit of kit, including dual-clutch transmissions, alternative powertrains and an advanced user interface.

For the exterior, look for a new grille and bumper combo, with styling made similar to that seen on the rest of the Mercedes range, particularly on the latest compact offerings such as the CLA and GLA. The headlights are also new and the rear dif-fuser and exhaust pipe design now match-

es that seen on prototypes for the next-generation C-Class.

Inside, look for only minor tweaks to the trim. There could be some new connectivity features and additional driver assistance packages, too.

It will come with a variety of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel units, with output rang-ing from about 109 to 156 horsepower. The electric version to be sold in the U.S. will come with a 134-horsepower rating and a driving range of about 115 miles.

The facelifted B-Class is expected to be revealed in late 2015, most likely at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany.

D-I-Y Tech Session - 17 November 2013It’s hard to believe but summer is drawing to a close. With the first snow visible on Pikes Peak, we should be thinking ahead to winterizing our vehicles for the coming months. What better way to do that than at our fall Do-It-Yourself Tech Session.

Come on down to Mercedes-Benz of

Colorado Springs on Sunday, 17 Novem-ber. Put your car up on the rack, check the antifreeze, put on new brakes, change the oil or whatever repairs or maintenance you want to do. It costs just $10 plus parts. Call Dave Williamson at 719-575-7976, to reserve your service bay.

MBCA Ladies Tea Lunch - 15 November 2013by Julie Nelson

Several years ago, when Andrew became the Rocky Mountain Regional Director for the Mercedes-Benz Club, I traveled

with him to the fall national board meeting in Los Gatos, California. We board mem-bers’ wives enjoyed shop-ping in the quaint Los Gatos downtown, and taking tea at Lisa’s Tea Treasures. There I made a promise to the Mer-cedes Ladies—anytime the national board meeting is

in Colorado Springs, afternoon tea will be served at the Nelsons’.

So, in the spirit of tradition and friendship,

you are invited to join Mercedes Ladies from around the country on Friday, Novem-ber 15, 11:30 a.m., for a tea luncheon at our home, 1027 Adams Drive, Colorado Springs.

A buffet of tea treats will include savories such as classic cucumber-dill and other sandwiches, tiny quiches and sausage rolls; scones with cream and preserves; and, sweet bites such as pecan pie bars and Irish cream delights. A selection of fine teas will round out our menu.

The cost for the tea luncheon is $10 per person. Dress is casual. Please RSVP to Julie, (719) 634-7522 or [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there!

Pikes Peak Section members are cor-dially invited to attend a reception for the Mercedes-Benz Club of America National Board of Directors. The reception will be held at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs at 730 Au-tomotive Drive on Friday, 25 November at 7:00 p.m.

Come out and meet your directors and officers who are in charge of chart-

ing the future of our club. Beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be served, courtesy of Mer-cedes-Benz of Colorado Springs and the MBCA. There is no charge for this event.

Shine up your Star Car for the 2013 Top Down Holiday Lights Tour. Steve Dierks and his bride Barb are planning the event this year as he transitions back to “civil-

ian” life when his term as MBCA President ends. They haven’t picked a date yet so check back next month for details. Defi-nitely put this one on your calendar!

Summer has come to an end and I have an-other tip that will help keep your MB looking good.

I’m sure most of you older drivers remem-ber when the

brake pads and brake shoes were made with asbestos. We didn’t have the problem that we have to-day - wheels getting black with dirt residue from the new compounds used in today’s brake pads. I’ve noticed I can clean my wheels, then drive downtown; and when I get back home I notice a light coating of brake dust on the front wheels. There is nothing I know of on the market that will keep this from happening. However, I have discovered a product that will

greatly reduce the dirt and debris that tends to stick to the wheels and it makes the wheels easier to keep clean.

The product is called Advantage 20X Clear Multi-Purpose Cleaner. You can find it at www.advanage20x.com or by calling 877-588-8390. You mix 1 oz of Advantage with 7 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Then spray the wheels with the solution. This strength will also remove road tar, clean

tough carpet and food stains, along with many other uses. If you use it to remove road tar from the paint work, remember to apply a good quality wax over the area

where you removed the tar. Make sure the entire wheel is covered, then wipe of the excess with a clean microfiber cloth. You will find the wheels clean easier and they will collect less dirt. I’ve noticed the wheels stay cleaner longer with regular use (use after washing the car, for example).

In closing, Meguiar’s has released a new product called Meguiar’s White Wax (http://superiorcarcare.commerce-search.net/search?catalog=everythingautomotive&.autodone=http%3A%2F%2Fsuperiorcarcare.net%2Fnsearch.html&query=meguiar%27s+White+wax&x=0&y=0) for white cars, $14.95. They also have a Meguiar’s Black for dark cars. Both are good waxes. However, I tried the White Wax on my 2013 GL-450 (white) and a 2009 Ford Explorer (white). I was unable to detect any difference in my car’s shine. The older Ford showed no more improvement over standard Mequiar’s wax. In my opinion, it’s not worth the extra money or time it takes to apply it.

Until next month, Happy Motoring.

After having breakfast at the Golden Cor-ral for the last 6 years, we think it’s time for a change. So we’ve found an alternative in the newest The Egg and I restaurant. It met all of our criteria: it’s brand new, we can order from the menu as much or as little as we wish, service is friendly and quick, and the food is delicious. Best of all, they have a private din-ing room where we can meet and it’s free!

The menu specializes in breakfast, natu-rally. Dishes range from 8 types of eggs benedict to skillets and hash specialties. Of course, they have breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros, as well as om-

elets, frittatas, pancakes and waffles, too. And everything is made to order. Prices are generally under $10. So personalize your breakfast experience with fresh, hot,

reasonably-priced menu choices.

The Egg and I is centrally located at 733 N. Academy Blvd. (just east of the Citadel Mall in the Citadel Crossing Shopping Center).

It provides easy access to all points north, south, east or west via Platte Ave or Acad-emy Blvd.

Please join us for our inaugural The Egg & I breakfast on Saturday, 19 October at 9:00 a.m. It’ll be a great way to kick off the drive to Fort Collins and the Budweiser Brewery.

Drive-in Movie Night RecapIt was definitely a good year and Dan and Cheryl Kerbs hit another home run with the 2013 Drive-In Movie Night. Although the day dawned gray and rainy, we didn’t let that stop us from having a fabulous time. Forty Pikes Peak Section members, with three couples from the Mile High Section, participated this year.

We started out the afternoon at the Wine Shoppe at Flying Horse Ranch where we mingled and checked out their wide array of garden merchandise while sampling a bit of the grape. Suitably forti-fied, we hit the road and started our CDs. We wandered through parts north answering movie-related questions along the way. Our first stop (in the rain!) was the tennis courts at Glen Park where we served up soggy ten-

nis balls to Dan and Clark. Back in our cars, we headed to Palmer Lake. Our second stop was The Villa at Palmer Lake for some bacon-wrapped dates and more wine. A perfect mid-rally rest stop.

Then we were off through some scenic country along Spruce Mountain Road. We were on roads many of us had never seen! Roller Coaster Road was fun (twice!) with its ups and downs. So it went all the way to Dan and Cheryl’s house where we kicked back in the garage and under the tents. It was the perfect setting, complete with a canary-yellow Smart car.

The rain persisted, albeit at a gentle rate but Dan had a tent over the grill so we managed to stay nice and dry. We grilled

up steaks and feasted on scalloped pota-toes, French-style green beans, baguettes, and a delectable assortment of desserts that included cream puffs, cheesecake,

eclairs, and mini fruit tarts. Ooh la la. Tres French. Rally winners and prizes were announced with dessert. First place went to Steve and Barb Dierks; sec-ond place to Andrew and Julie Nelson and third place to Henry and Sylvia Russell.

By dusk, the cars were lined up and the rain let up too so we were perfectly situ-ated. Those with convertibles were particu-larly happy for the dry weather. For those who couldn’t attend, have you guessed the movie yet? It was A Good Year, starring Russel Crowe. Some might call it a chick flick but it was a lovely, gentle story. Atypi-cally for today’s cinematic offerings, it had no shoot-em ups or overt sex scenes, and we loved it. It was great fun picking out our rally clues and props in the movie.

All too soon, our evening was over as was the canoodling in the front seat. It was a great time and mega kudos to Dan and Cheryl for a spectacular event. Hope to see you all next year.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Daimler, the maker of Mercedes-Benz and Smart cars, has announced that it will start selling a self-driving car by 2020.

It is thought the car will be able to drive on its own in most situations but will still hand control back to the driver during difficult situations such as dealing with traffic lights.

The move could help Daimler regain its position as the leading luxury car market from its rival BMW.

‘We want to be the first to launch autono-mous functions in production vehicles. You can be sure: we will accomplish that in this decade,’ said Daimler head of development Thomas Weber.

The technology featured at last month’s Frankfurt car show won’t come to market for another 10 years.

The German car maker has been working on improving its driverless technology over the past few years and recently became the world’s first car manufacturer to dem-onstrate autonomous driving in rural and urban traffic.

Last month, a Mercedes Benz S 500 Intelli-gent Drive research vehicle, drove autono-mously through a 100-kilometre-long route from Mannheim to Pforzheim in Germany.

The driverless S-Class was able to deal with some difficult situations involving traf-fic lights, roundabouts, pedestrians, cyclists and trams. A particular challenge for au-

tonomous vehicles is the way in which they communicate and interact with other cars.

Coming to an agreement with an oncoming vehicle on who should proceed first around an obstruction is something that requires a very great deal of situational analysis.

‘Where a human driver might boldly move forward into a gap, our autonomous vehicle tends to adopt a more cautious approach,’ said Prof Ralf Herrtwich, head of driver assistance and suspension systems at Daimler.

‘This sometimes results in comical situ-ations, such as when, having stopped at a zebra crossing, the vehicle gets waved through by the pedestrian – yet our car stoically continues to wait, because we failed to anticipate such politeness when we programmed the system.’

The research vehicle was equipped with production-based sensors for the project. Developers taught the technology platform to know where it is, what it sees and how to react autonomously.

With the aid of its highly automated ‘Route Pilot’, the vehicle was able to negotiate its own way through dense urban and rural traffic. The driverless S-Class was also able to deal with some difficult situations involving traffic lights, roundabouts, pedes-trians, cyclists and trams.

Existing technology already partly auto-mates driving to assist during, for instance, traffic jams, by maintaining a safe distance with the car in front.

In July, the UK government said it will allow driverless cars on public roads for the first time during trials to take place this year. During the ground-breaking road tests, an expert will have to remain in the driving seat.

The future: Most big car-makers are al-ready developing self-drive technology and incorporating elements of it into cars already on the road. Mercedes, as usual, leads the way.
