November Fun Run

The Best or Nothing!

Do-It-Yourself Tech Session

Saturday, 15 November 20149:00 a.m.

Join us for breakfast on Saturday, 15 No-vember at The Egg & I, 733 N. Academy Blvd, for some good food and great com-pany among your fellow Star car owners.

Order from the extensive breakfast menu - their omelets are great. Have a cup of coffee and get in on the latest news from the Section. It’s a casual but hospitable event.

This is a Freestyle Fun Run day; we currently don’t have an organized event planned for after breakfast. If the weather cooperates, we might go for a drive and pick up some passes for the Paved Peaks & Passes program. Or if someone has an idea for a place of interest to go, we’ll follow his or her lead. This is our month to be spontaneous, as our Fun Runs were originally intended to be.

Surprise yourself - come on out and see what we’re going to do.

Sunday, 16 November 201410:00 a.m.

Time to winterize, Pikes Peak Section! Winter will be here before you know it and the Farmer’s Almanac promises it will be a doozy.

Get busy winterizing your cars - install snow tires ahead of the first blizzard; change the battery, replace worn-out windshield wipers, adjust your coolant levels, and check your belts and hoses. These are all quick and easy projects you can do it yourself at a huge savings. Remember Dan Kerbs and Gary Gagnon each saved over $1000 swapping running boards for their MLs at our last D-I-Y Tech Session. All you pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount, of course) and a $10 fee to use the service bay.

Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs will provide service techs to help you over the rough spots. Think of the sense of pride you’ll feel when you fix your Benz your-

self!

Come on down to Mercedes-Benz of Col-orado Springs on Sunday, 16 November at 10:00 a.m. for our Winter Do-It-Yourself Tech Session. Call Dave Williamson at 719-575-7976 to reserve your service bay and lift.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

I’m in For-mula One withdrawal. As of this writing, there has not been a race in several weeks. After finishing first and second at the Rus-sian Grand Prix last

month, team Mercedes AMG clinched the Manufacturers’ Championship. With the win, Lewis Hamilton increased his points lead for the driver’s championship over his teammate Nico Rosberg. With the dominance of team Mercedes AMG, it will likely be a 1-2 finish in the driver’s championship. The only mystery will be the order of the finish between the team- mates.

By the time you read this, the next race, the U.S. Grand Prix in Texas, will be completed. I absolutely love this race course; it starts with a long uphill straightaway to a sharp left-hand down-hill hairpin curve. The start of this race is always exciting with the drivers jockey-ing for position to get around the hairpin curve without crashing and ending their race. Since the race is held in Texas, the winner receives a black cowboy hat. It’s always fun to see a supposedly sophisti-cated Formula One driver don a Stetson.

Our next section board meeting is Tues-day, 4 November at 6:00 p.m., at Mer-cedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. This is our 2015 Event Calendar Planning meet-ing. Our board is always open to any new ideas for events, rallys or weekend trips;

so if you have an idea, let me or any of us on the board know about it. You can also attend the meeting - all board meet-ings are open to the membership.

Breakfast this month is on Saturday, 15 November. You can scarf up a great meal at the Egg & I while we cogitate on where we’ll go after breakfast. If you’ve got an idea for a drive, bring it. If the weather cooperates, it could be a really fun day.

Make sure to reserve a service bay for our Fall Do-It-Yourself Tech Session on Sunday, 16 November at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. Be there at 10:00 a.m. with your $10 service bay fee and enjoy some coffee and donuts before you get started on your project. This event is always a good place to take care of those winterizing needs for your Star car. A service tech will be on hand to advise, but you will have to do the work, and bring your own tools. The parts counter will be open and, as always, Section members will receive a 20% discount. Just to be safe, please contact the parts department ahead of time to make sure they have the parts you need in stock.

Finally, don’t forget our annual Christ-mas Party is next month. It will be held again at the venerable El Paso Club in downtown Colorado Springs on Sunday, 7 December. Send your reservation form in today. Seats are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline is 1 December.

As always, drive safely, and I will see you down the road.

2014 Christmas Party - 7 December 2014Don’t miss the Pikes Peak Section’s 2014 Christmas Party at the El Paso Club. Or-ganized on October 23, 1877, the El Paso Club is believed to be the oldest private town club west of Chicago. This elegant and much-envied location will be the back-drop as we celebrate the holiday season and the camaraderie of the Mercedes-Benz community. Black tie is encouraged or coat and tie, holiday/cocktail attire.

The menu includes three entrée selections: mixed grill (broiled 5 oz. filet mignon and baked 3 oz. salmon filet); or broiled 10 oz. New York steak; or chicken cordon-bleu. Accompanying the entrée will be Caesar salad, twice baked potato, fresh green beans with almond slivers and roasted to-matoes with basil, rolls & butter, water, iced tea, and coffee service. Dessert is a choice of the El Paso Club’s Goldbrick sundae or the mixed berry tart.

Included in your meal price is one glass of beer or wine and hors d’oeuvres dur-ing our cocktail hour starting at 5:00 p.m. followed by an outstanding dinner at 6:00 p.m. Additional glasses of beer or wine may be purchased. Also bottles of wine

may be purchased for the dinner table. (Please note: the El Paso Club is a private club that doesn’t deal in credit cards, so please bring cash and/or check, if you wish to purchase wine by the bottle or additional glasses of beer or wine.)

We will be holding a raffle again this year to benefit a local charity. You select the raffle prize you would like by putting one half of your raffle ticket in the container in front of the prize. One raffle ticket is includ-ed in your meal price. Six additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $5.00. You may purchase as many as you desire.

If there are any questions, please contact Gary or Diane Gagnon, 719-282-9313, or Andrea Hansen, [email protected] for information. Reserva-tions are only held with the receipt of your reservation form and payment. This is an all-inclusive evening for your $55/per per-son fee. Make your reservations now for Sunday, December 7, 5:00 p.m. Deadline for reservations is Monday, December 1, 2014, or until we sell out the space. Space is limited.

The annual Pikes Peak Section Potluck Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, January 25, at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs, 730 Au-tomotive Drive. For those of you who are counting, that’s the week BEFORE Super Bowl XLIX in Arizona! This is one of our favorite events of the year and the one our members look forward to the most.

The dealership provides the setup and beverages. All we have to do is bring the food. So, everyone, please plan to bring a dish to share – a salad, a main dish, or a

dessert. Showcase your favorite dishes – we’re flexible and we like everything.

We’ll kick off at 6:00 p.m. sharp. We’ll have great food and some surprises in store for attendees. We’ll recap our driving year and preview what’s to come in 2015. The dealership may also spice up the evening with some special auction items. Bring your wallets. All proceeds go to the Section.

Please call Glenn Hamill at 719-575-7931 or Dave Wil-liamson at 719-575-7976 to RSVP and to let them know what you’ll bring.

Holiday Lights Drive - 13 December 2014Shine up your Star Car for the 2014 Top Down Holiday Lights Tour. Tim and Marla Wiseman are hosting the event again this year.

The date is Saturday, 13 December, weather permitting. We’ll meet to unload crockpots, break up into small groups to tour holiday lights on a designated route, and end at Tim and Marla’s house for beverages and food as we thaw out fingers and toes.

We’re asking attendees to bring a dish to share. In the past, we’ve had crockpots full of meatballs, soups, dips, and trays of veggies and sweets. Think of it as practice

for the Potluck. We’ll provide the setup and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

All makes and models of roadsters are encouraged and welcome. Even if you don’t have a roadster, plan to join the fun with any Mercedes-Benz vehicle that you have – open sun roofs count. We’ll provide a detailed

map of the route to the best lights as well as group guides so you won’t get lost in the dark.

We’ll send a detailed e-mail blast a week before the drive so we can make a “guess-timate” about the weather. Be sure we have your current e-mail address.

The cost is $5 per person. Watch your De-cember newsletter for more details.

2015 CalendarThe time to think about the future is NOW. Your Board of Directors will be planning the 2015 calendar of events for the Pikes Peak Section at the November Board Meeting on Tuesday, 4 November. This is the time when we schedule everything from our drives to our weekend socials and everything in between.

We don’t want to get into a rut, planning the same things again and again. We need

some fresh ideas that will pique some interest and we’re hoping our members can help us out. Send us an email, give us a phone call, or attend the board meet-ing in person. If you’ve got a great idea for a drive or an event, we

want to hear about it.

Holiday Lights Drive - 13 December 2014

Pikes Peak Section ShirtsJust in time for Christmas, the Pikes Peak Section is re-introducing our Section shirts. The impetus for this move is the number of queries we have received from our mem-bers. They see some of our older mem-bers (older as in years of membership, not age!) wearing the Section shirts we procured several years ago and want to know how to get them. This move answers the mail for those folks.

Members can or-der from several styles of shirts, men’s and women’s both. All styles of the shirts will be a similar in color to foster Section identity. We are finalizing prices and approving the embroidery. Everything should be in place for members to order their shirts beginning

next month.

We are also considering entering the brave new world of e-commerce and establishing an on-line store where members can order shirts, caps, jackets, and accessories

embroidered with the Section or MBCA logo. We have to be sure we can sell sufficient merch-anise to recoup the substantial startup costs.

If you would like to order a shirt or have suggestions for our e-store, contact Judy Bennett at [email protected] to let her know. Look for the shirt order form, as well as additional information, in the December newsletter.

News You Can Use Jason Bogart, Vice President of the Three Rivers Section in Indiana, had a great idea to boost membership in MBCA. Many of us

keep a small bundle of MBCA membership applications in our cars to leave on the wind-shields of Mercedes-Benz vehicles we park near, or next to, as we go about our weekly errands. Jason takes this idea one step further by printing a personalized mes-sage on a sticky-note, then applying the note to every membership

application he leaves behind. To create your personalized post-it note, follow these steps:

1. Type a personalized message in a Word document. Copy and paste the message so that it appears 3-on-a-page.

2. Print the Word document from your printer

3. Apply a blank sticky note over each mes-sage

4. Feed the document with the adhesive part of the sticky note facing into the printer head-first (if you feed the loose end of the sticky note into your printer head-first, the loose edges will jam your printer)

5. Print

You now have 3 (or more) printed sticky notes to place on MBCA membership appli-cations. Print multiple pages of sticky notes from your printer at one time, to produce larger quantities

Leave your personalized MBCA member-ship application on every Mercedes-Benz vehicle you come across throughout the week. This is a great way to introduce you and your Section to prospective members on a more personal/local level.

Mercedes-Benz’s rival to the BMW X6 has just been spotted in prototype form testing at the Nürburgring. The new X6 rival will share its underpinnings with the M-Class. The vehicle was originally thought to carry an M-Class Coupe title

but lately there’s been rumors that it may be called a GLE-Class Coupe under a new nam-ing strategy at Mercedes-Benz where the M-Class is renamed a GLE-Class to reflect its position-

ing in the E-Class range of cars.

We already have a fairly good idea as to what the coupe-like crossover will look like thanks to the unveiling of the Concept Coupe SUV at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show. The prototypes appear very similar in both

overall profile and in detail to the striking concept.

In the powertrain department, expect the more potent offerings from the M-Class to be offered. This means the base trim will likely come with a 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Above this will be a mid-range model with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 good for 329 hp and 354 lb-ft, and then there will be the AMG model, most likely with some varia-tion of the Affalterbach tuner’s new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. A plug-in hybrid variant is also possible.

Due to enter production in the U.S. at Mercedes’ Alabama plant, the new cross-over is expected to arrive as a 2016 model along with several other of the German automaker’s high-riding models. These will include a new GLK-Class (GLC under the new naming strategy), an updated M-Class (GLE) and an updated GL-Class (GLS).

The Paved Peaks & Passes program is coming down to the wire for this summer. We’ve got six teams eligible for their 30 Peak patch, meaning they have completed their P3 passport.

Together we have driven all of the 36 possi-ble passes and we have driven 317 passes

total. Six of our teams have reached the “magic 30” number, with two more closing in, and three have actually driven all 36 passes. That’s an awesome accomplish-ment. Check out all the photos on our Facebook page at “MBCA Pikes Peak Section.” Get your passport today, and join the fun!

The Paved Peaks & Passes program is gearing up for the 2015 driving season. While our original cadre of P3-ers will con-tinue driving the paved peaks and passes, looking for that magic number “30,” we’ve cooked up a totally new iteration. For those who are looking for a new challenge, we’re definitely up to the task. We will be issuing a second passport for 2015 for a nominal $25 fee for returning P3-ers and $75 for new P3-ers. This passport will take you to

points of interest and roadside attractions all around Colorado - again within a day’s drive of Colorado Springs and all on paved roads.

If you didn’t get in on the original P3 pass-port, don’t despair. You can jump into our program with this second iteration and start your driving adventure. Get your passport today, and join the fun! Watch these pages for additional information.

Paved Passes & Peppers Recap The Pikes Peak Section ventured south on Sunday, 28 September to drive some passes and pick up some Pueblo chiles. It was a great day for a drive with beautiful blue skies and we picked up three passes - Raton, Cuchara, and La Veta.

First, we tried out a new breakfast eatery - Over Easy in University Village. They have a great breakfast selection, complete with mimosas and a bloody mary bar. We recommend you give them a try. Then we lined up 9 beautiful Benzes as we headed south on the “I” enroute to Raton. Miracu-lously, we all arrived at our first destination together.

Once we peeked at New Mexico and pho-tographed Raton, we headed for Cuchara Pass via the national scenic byway, the Highway of Legends, and lunch at the Dog Bar in Cuchara Valley, home of a former

ski area. This place is a local legend, and comes complete with the requisite mooch-ing dogs on the patio. We had a lot of fun deciding who saw the most animals and license plates on the trip. That rest stop was a treasure trove of out-of-state and overseas license plates.

After a leisurely lunch, we headed toward Walsenburg and La Veta Pass. From there we broke up into groups with some headed home and others headed to Pueblo for chile peppers at Milberger Farms.

If there is such a thing as exercise for a car, each of ours got a great workout that day. The leaves were not as colorful in the south but there was plenty of color to get our at,tention. Thanks to Julie and Andrew Nelson for putting this one together and leading us on our Highway of Legends adventure.

“...the Black

Shark would

make a fine

getaway vehicle

for any spy.”

Latvia’s Dartz is back with an all-new model for its Prombron brand based on the bones of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class full-size SUV. However, don’t call the new Dartz an SUV because the company says it’s much more than that. Called the Black Shark, it’s named after a Russian attack he-licopter and features enough tech goodies to embarrass James Bond and the whole Q Branch.

At present we only have a teaser shot showing the roof of the Black Shark but Dartz plans to reveal full details in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of a Russian in-fantry division. Russo-Baltique, from which Dartz traces its roots, was a supplier of mili-tary vehicles for the par-ticular infantry division before the company was disbanded in 1923.

In addition to using a GL platform, Dartz has also bor-rowed engines from Mer-cedes. Buyers of the Black Shark will be able to choose either a V-8 or V-12, with power options ranging as high as 1,500 horsepower. Dartz is keen to point out that the vehicles will feature either a “V8 biturbo V2” or “V12 biturbo V2” badge. However, the V2 here doesn’t have any relation to the engine but the fact that the Black Shark will come with two Vertu luxury smartphones.

The smartphones provide the Black Shark with a number of lifestyle-oriented apps, one of which is called BlackJet and allows you to book a private jet in just two taps. You also get access to Vertu’s concierge, giving you 24-hour access to a personal assistant no matter where you are in the world.

But why the James Bond reference at

the start of the article? Because the Black Shark would also make a fine getaway vehicle for any spy. In fact, former James Bond actors Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore have given it the tick of approval, according to Dartz.

The vehicle comes with standard bullet proofing up to ballistic level B7 as well as electrochromic windows that go from trans-parent to opaque at the push of the button. There are also door handles that retract into the body; an electric shock device for warding off paparazzi; a body made out of Kevlar and titanium to stop magnetic mines ; and Dartz’s own Golden Eye system that uses fingerprint and retina scanning for

security.

Aware of the fact that many of its customers choose to ride in the back rather than do the driv-ing, Dartz has also added a safety system called Vigiton which con-stantly moni-

tors the driver to ensure they’re awake and aware at all times behind the wheel. Dartz has even more extensive security mea-sures should you choose. These include a sniper-proof roof; a road-anazlyzing system to detect explosives in the road ahead; and a telecommunications system jammer.

“Let’s face it, you are bored of serial-made cars,” Dartz boss Leonard F. Yankelovich says of the new vehicle. “With Black Shark fully customizable features and appearance you get a car that is one-off masterpiece and forever will stay that way.”

Production of the Black Shark will be lim-ited to just five units.
