Denver Nature & Science MuseumSaturday, 15 August 2015

9:00 a.m.The Denver Nature & Science Museum is the destination for our August Fun Run. We’ll be traveling to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, where we will explore exhibits on dragons, unicorns, and mermaids; the Silk Road; Egyptian mum-mies; and North American Indian cultures, just to name a few.

A wide variety of exhibitions, programs, and activities help museum visitors learn about the natural history of Colo-rado, Earth, and the universe. The

500,000-square-foot building houses more than one million objects in its collections including natural history and anthropo-logical materials, as well as archival and library resources.

Every few months, the museum features different themes. This month through January, the feature is poisons (bwah-ha-ha). You will learn about where cer-tain poisons come from. Believe it or not, some poisons are good; come find out which ones they are.

In the museum, there are elves, or as Sylvia calls them, gnomes. These elves

are located throughout the museum. Find as many as you can. At lunch, there will be a surprise for the person that identifies the most of them.

This will be a very edifying trip with some much-needed socialization at lunch fol-lowing the tour. So, join us at the Citadel Crossing Egg & I Restaurant at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 15 August. If you’re not into breakfast, meet us in the parking lot. We will depart for Denver at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Please RSVP to Henry or Sylvia Russell so we have an idea for a head count for lunch. Contact them at [email protected] or 719-599-5503.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

It was great to see such a good turnout for our July events, the Joint Section Picnic and the Presi-dent’s Rally “Back to the Future.” Many thanks to Clark and

Karen Absher for planning the picnic at Maguireville up in Monument, CO. The collection of antiques was impressive, from all sorts of implements to a full-size Conestoga wagon to many intriguing items too numerous to mention. There was even a restored railroad caboose.

With twelve cars and twenty-eight people at lunch, the “Back to the Future” rally was the best-attended car rally our sec-tion has had in quite a while. I really appreciate all who participated and hope everyone had a great time.

For our August Fun Run, after our monthly breakfast, we will be driving up to Denver to tour the Nature & Science Museum. Please join us at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday 15 August at the Egg & I res-taurant in Citadel Crossing for breakfast with the fun run to follow.

Don’t forget our summer highlight event - our annual Drive-In Movie Night. It’s on Labor Day weekend on Sunday, 6 September. This is a truly fun event that includes a movie-themed car rally that ends at the Dan and Cheryl Kerbs home-stead for grilled steaks with all the sides. At dark, we’ll all enjoy the movie from the comfort of our Star cars with the sound played through our vehicles’ sound systems. Of course, popcorn and candy is available from the movie concession stand. Don’t miss this event and please RSVP ASAP to reserve your spot.

As you can see, we have some great upcoming events planned and I hope to see many of your there.

In my monthly Formula One racing up-date, the next opportunity for Mercedes Petronas to shine was the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, Hungary on 24-26 July. As we go to press, the results are not known, but we can be sure that Lewis Hamilton, currently leading in the Driver’s Championship standings, fol-lowed closely by teammate Nico Ros-berg, will be at or near the top. Tune in to the BBC to watch the race and see the results.

As always, drive safe (achtung pot-holes!), and I will see you down the road.

AndrewBye-Bye Shooting Brake by V. VijayenthiranAlthough Mercedes-Benz’s CLS Shoot-ing Brake was launched with great fan-fare back in 2012, senior management in Stuttgart have reportedly quashed plans for a successor. The vehicle, es-sentially the station wagon cousin of the

svelte CLS sedan, never made it to these shores, and a lack of interest in most other markets outside of Europe are said to be the reasons for the successor model’s demise.

Come prepared for your adventure!

“The night is when history comes alive,” so don’t miss the fun at Drive-In Movie Night, Sunday, September 6. Please join us for a great drive, dinner, and a movie “under the Stars” on Sunday, September 6. We’ll meet at 3:00 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center, 201 S. Fairview St, Woodland Park, CO to begin our adventure.

The cost for this entire event - dinner and the movie - is only $30 per person (not including the optional tour of the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Center).

We’re busy planning this great event and you can bet we’ll have steaks on the barbie and accompanying side dishes along with suitable beverages, adult and otherwise. Line up your Star car and grab some pop-

corn as you relax under the stars. It’s one of the best times you’ll have all year.

Email Dan Kerbs at [email protected], or give him a call at 719-594-6017. Reservations must be made not later than 1 September.

Just so you know, one and two is not the show so you may want to do your home-

work before you go.

Hint: we look forward to seeing you on 15 August for the trip to the Denver Nature & Science Museum. You may not want to miss it!

Wine-Making Made Easy - 10 September 2015The owners of Old West Homebrew Supply have reserved, for the Pikes Peak Section, their popular wine making class for the month of September. The 10 Sep-tember class starts at 6:30 PM and will take the mystery out of wine making with a hands-on 3-hour evening session in a re-laxed environment. Participants will sample a variety of wines, eat hors d’oeurves and desserts with port wine. At the end of the class you get to take a bottle of wine home as an extra bonus. All of this for a small class fee of $29.95/person. This makes a great couples’ evening.

The course is led by Gary Gagnon and provides instruction on the equipment, techniques, supplies, and methods you need to transform a Wine Expert wine kit into over 2 dozen bottles of enjoyable, high-quality wine.

There are only 12 seats available for this

class and early registration and payment is required. To reserve your class seat, call Old West Homebrew and Wine Supply at 719.635.2443. You will have to provide your name and payment at the time you call and reserve your spot.

Old West Homebrew Supply is located at 229 East Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO. Here is the url for the class location map: http://preview.tinyurl.com/ls29sj3 (please copy and paste the url into your browser).

The point of contact for this class is Gary Gagnon, 719.282.9313 or [email protected]. Please RSVP by 22 August.

The 2015 Paved Peaks & Passes pro-gram is doing great. Our 15 teams have driven to 218 points of interest (POIs) across southern Colorado. On Saturday, 19 September, we’ll be picking up a few more POIs after our monthly breakfast at The Egg & I restaurant at Citadel Crossing.

It’ll be a nice, leisurely drive through the Colorado countryside, weather permitting. It’ll be a perfect day to take the roadsters out of the garage and put the tops down or open the sunroofs. Let the wind blow

through your hair (or not) and don’t forget the sunscreen.

For those who have not been able to pursue their POIs as aggressively as they would like, this drive will jump start your passport.

We’ll decide the exact route closer to the Fun Run date but wherever we go, you can be sure of great camaraderie and great driving experiences. Come on out and join us.

POI Drive - 19 September 2015

The Pikes Peak Section elections are coming up soon and it’s time to think about the direction the club is going. The Pikes Peak Section Board of Directors decides the types of events the Section holds and the frequency of those events, and, pro-vides for the detailed management of those events. The members of the board are key to the ongoing success of our section.

This year, we’ve got five board members up for reelection. One of those board members has decided not to seek reelection, opening a vacancy on our board.

If you are interested in getting involved with the day-to-day management of the Sec-tion and if you’ve got the time to devote to planning and directing one event per year, we’re looking for you. The position requires attending one board meeting a month and participating in monthly Section events

hosted by your fellow board members. There’s a level of professional courtesy and synergy in attending and supporting events planned by your fellow board members. If you are interested in serving your Section, please contact Charlie Bennett at charlesi-

[email protected] or 719-576-9737.

The 2015 elections will be held on Tuesday, 13 October at 6:00 p.m., and we have reserved the Wine Room at Biaggi’s Italian Restaurant, 1805 Briargate Parkway (Prom-enade Shops at Briargate)

in Colorado Springs.

The dinner and elections are open to all members and you are encouraged to at-tend on a no-host basis. The Section pays for the meals of board members and poten-tial board members as a thank you for their service. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Judy Bennett at [email protected] or 719-576-9737.

Section Elections - 13 October 2015

Did You Know?In August 1888, Bertha Benz, the 39-year-old wife of German engineer Karl Benz, made history when she became the first person to complete a long-distance trip by automobile. The trip helped popularize Karl Benz’s latest invention—and likely saved him from professional and financial ruin.

D-I-Y Tech Session - 22 November 2015

Time to start thinking about the changing seasons. Yes, I know it’s only August, but the days are already getting shorter and it won’t be long before the leaves start falling and the precipitation changes from rain to sleet. Depressing, isn’t it?

So, what can you do about it? We recom-mend you attend the Fall Do-It-Yourself Tech Session at Mercedes-Benz of Colo-rado Springs, 933 Automotive Drive on Sunday, 22 November. You can check your

battery, top off fluids, replace windshield wipers, change your oil, or do anything you can think of to get your Star car ready for winter weather.

We’ll start off at 10:00 in the service bays. As usual, Dave Williamson will have his techs on hand to offer advice and lend a hand if necessary. Call him at 719-575-7976 to reserve your bay and lift. Cost is only $10.

Breakfast & Fun Run - 17 October 2015The October Fun Run is going to be a nice leisurely drive in the mountains. It should be a great day for a leaf-peeping drive, weather permitting. We’ll head up to the hills where the aspens will be changing into their Fall finery. We’ll see lots of gold sprinkled with other fall colors of red and orange.

Join us for breakfast at The Egg & I res-taurant at Citadel Crossing at 9:00 a.m.

or meet us in the parking lot at 10:30. We might even drive past some POIs so bring your passports along for the drive.

2015 Holiday Party - 13 December 2015Save the date! Sunday, December 13 is when we kick off the holiday season in style with our annual Holiday Party at the El Paso Club in Colorado Springs. We’re hard at work to make this a memorable evening for our members.

As has become our custom, the evening will be a nostalgic nod to the elegance of the past when guys and dolls dressed “to

the nines” and enjoyed an evening of con-versation, dining, and fun. So go dig out your cummerbunds and bow ties and your sparkly jackets and heels. It’s time to dress up, people!

Look for your reservation form in the Sep-tember newsletter. Or you can give Judy Bennett at call at 719-576-9737 to get on the guest list.

Pikes Peak Section Enchanted Weekend

“Highlights

include driving

the Enchanted

Circle Scenic

Byway and

visiting the

Black Mesa

Winery....”

The Pikes Peak Section is headed south to New Mexico this fall for a 3-day regional event called The Enchanted Weekend. We plan to leave Colorado Springs on Friday, 9 October for Taos, NM. Highlights of the weekend include driving the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway and visiting the Black Mesa Winery and other points of local inter-est.

The Enchanted Circle is an 83-mile loop through mountains, valleys, mesa, and national forest, all unique to northern New Mexico. We’ll drive from Taos to Questa via Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. This beautiful countryside offers dramatic moun-tain vistas of aspen and pine in the shadow of 13,000-ft Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the state.

Then it’s a 37-mile drive down a winding canyon road along the Rio Grande River to the Black Mesa Winery. Black Mesa Win-ery has garnered multiple “Best of Show”, “Best in Class” awards, and “Double Gold” and gold medals in international competi-tion. Black Mesa’s wines meet the high-

est standards for wine, not only for New Mexico, but also on the international stage. Need more activities? Taos Pueblo is a living Native American community and National Historic Landmark. The multi-story adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over a 1,000 years.

We will be staying at the historic La Fonda de Taos Hotel on the Plaza. Our renowned hospitality suite will be open on Friday and Saturday nights before and after dinner. The event cost for this weekend is $37 per person and includes a continental breakfast, box lunch, snacks and drinks in the hospitality suite for two nights, dash plaques and prizes. We plan to return home Sunday, although it’s possible to stay over to Monday and have breakfast with anyone who wants to spend Sunday shop-ping or sightseeing.

Contact Dave Carpenter at [email protected] for more information or to sign up. Registration deadline is 1 September 2015. Please plan to join us for this delight-fully enchanted weekend.

G500 4x4² Confirmed by Viknesh VijayenthiranMercedes-Benz is expanding its G-Class lineup with a new variant aimed at the serious off-roader. The vehicle is the awe-some G500 4x4², first shown as a concept at March’s Geneva Motor Show and now headed for production.

Mercedes says the “outstanding” response to this ex-treme G-Class con-cept persuaded it to put the vehicle into production. How-ever, with prototypes spotted in the wild months before the

concept’s reveal, there wasn’t any doubt about Mercedes’ plans.

Compared to regular G-Class variants, the G500 4x4 adopts the raised ride height (now 450 millimeters), permanent all-wheel-drive system, reduction transfer

case, trio of differential locks, and portal ax-les of the insane Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6.

The portal axles are what contribute to the raised height: unlike conventional axles, the wheels are not at the height of the axle but are instead situated lower thanks to the portal transmission. Owing to the consid-erably wider track of the portal axles, the designers have added large 22-inch wheels wrapped with massive 325/55 size tires to help fill the wheel arches.

Power comes from the Mercedes-AMG-developed twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, rated at 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque in the G500 4x4. The same engine has also been confirmed for the regular G550 starting from the 2016 model year.

The G500 4x4²’s availability in the U.S. is yet to be confirmed but, overseas you can order it now, with deliveries to start in September.

Joint Section Picnic Recap The Pikes Peak and Mile High Sections enjoyed a very rare treat for our Joint Section Picnic on Saturday, 11 July. We gathered at Maguireville, home of Jim and Donna Maguire, collectores extraordinaire.

Our wonderful hosts and our most capable organizers, Karen and Clark Absher, had an entire picnic for our 53 attendees set up in the barn that housed reproductions and treaures of historic rurall America.

We toured the barn, upstairs and down-stairs, as well as the many outbuildings, including the TB cabin, the teepee, the caboose, the stage depot, and the machin-

ery building. Maguireville should rightfully be designated a nationalm or at least, a Colorado treasure.

Then it was down to eat - barbeque with all the fixin’s, and we finished up with a hefty piece of MBCA Joint Section Picnic cake. During dessert, Jim regaled us with the story of his beloved his-torical treasure trove. Thanks to Jim and Donna and Karen and Clark for an extraordinary day.Check out all the pictures on Facebook at MBCA Pikes Peak Section.

President’s Rally RecapOur President was up to his usual tricks with our annual President’s Rally on Sat-urday, 18 July. Twelve cars and 25 intrepid participants tackled the “Back to the Fu-ture” theme in honor of 2015 (as well as 1885, 1955, and 1985). Andrew really went easy on us by giving us turn-by-turn directions and making all questions multiple choice/guess. Even with those head-starts though, it was not an easy rally.

Just when we thought we knew the an-swers, it turns out...well, not so much. Still we all managed to complete the course and rendezvous at the desig-nated lunch area, the Black Bear Diner. With the juke box blaring out 50s tunes and Julie with her trusty red pen to mark all the wrong answers, we were ready for some sustenance.

After toting up the scores, we cel-ebrated the top scorers. The Patel family came in 4th, Henry and Sylvia Russell came in 3rd, Tom Croak and

Joyce Blutt came in 2nd, and Charlie and Judy Bennett eked out the win by just one point!

Congratulations to all who sur-vived the 2015 President’s Rally. Well done, Andrew!

...all the

prejudices

regarding

diesel vehicles

are well out of

time.”

Mercedes-Benz has set a new record for the diesels in the legendary Pikes Peak hill-climb race with a near-production C300 d 4MATIC: Test driver Uwe Nittel com-pleted the almost 12-mile-long route which includes more than 150 bends at a range in altitude of nearly 4620 feet in just 11.37 minutes.

“With extensive simulation measures, gru-elling durability road tests and exhaustive trial driving at test sites all over the world, Mercedes-Benz’s testing programme is undoubtedly one of the most rigorous in the automotive branch,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Pikes Peak raised the crossbar still further. And the virtually series-production C300 d 4MATIC demon-strated in this test that sporty performance and clean exhaust technology go together perfectly.”

The test drive at Pikes Peak also demon-strated how well Mercedes-Benz diesel powertrains are adapted to the special requirements of the US market, which include extreme climatic conditions.

The course’s numerous switchbacks put the suspension and the 4MATIC powertrain through their paces when accelerating out of the bends. Another challenge for the diesel engine was the thin mountain air – the finishing point is an impressive 14,000’ above sea level. Test driver Uwe Nittel, 46, reports: “Shoving a series diesel saloon

with automatic transmission up Pikes Peak sounds like a crazy idea, but it was a lot of fun. And it showed that all the prejudices regarding diesel vehicles are well out of time.”

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) is arguably the most spectacular and demanding hill-climb race in the world. The uphill gradient averages seven percent. PPIHC is also one of the very oldest motorsport events. Races for automobiles and motorcycles have been held here since 1916, and this year’s event was the 93rd in the course’s history.

The 150 kW (204 hp) C300 d 4MATIC fitted with a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission competed in the hill-climb race in largely series-production configura-tion. As is customary for a racing car, the interior was cleared out. The modifications included the safety measures required by the regulations, such as a roll-over cage, racing tank, fire extinguishing system,

enhanced brakes and ultra-high-perfor-mance tires (UHP).

The environment-friendly engine technology remained completely un-changed. Thanks to the highly effective emission control system, the C300 d is the first diesel model to undercut the American ULEV 70 emissions limits, which are among the strictest in the world.

The C300 d is powered by a four-cyl-inder diesel engine with fourth-gener-

ation common rail direct injection featuring piezo injectors, two-stage turbocharging and exhaust gas recirculation. A highly sensitive engine control system responds precisely to the most diverse operating conditions, thereby optimizing the com-bustion processes. The emission control system incorporates a close-coupled electrically heated oxidation catalytic con-verter and a diesel particulate filter which is located in the area of the bulkhead. This shortens the regeneration times.

Congratulations, Mercedes-Benz!
