ConGraTulaTionS to trp employers WHo reAcHeD tHeir 60% tArGetValley Metro and the Maricopa County Trip Reduction Program (TRP) would like to congratulate and recognize the TRP employers who have recently met or exceeded their drive-alone rate and/or miles-traveled goals at one or more worksites. Following is a list of the TRP employers who achieved the 60% floor:

Managing the Trip Reduction Program, rewarding participants and recruiting new ones is not an easy task. A successful program takes persistence, creativity and support. Just ask transportation coordinator, Darlene Stogner, of Bechtel.

Ms. Stogner currently has a mix of Alternative Mode Users (AMUs): 7 bus riders, 36 carpoolers, 18 vanpoolers and 3 walkers commuting to Bechtel’s Glendale office.

Although there are challenges for retaining and gaining new AMUs, Ms. Stogner explained “We have a sustainability program which includes several AMUs, so it is natural for them to promote the Trip Reduction Program and echo the message of sharing the ride. Word of mouth is the best source for getting information out.”

Ms. Stogner explained the current alternative modes being used. “Vanpool has been an effective alternative mode for many employees, some since 2002! Our east van travels 96 miles round trip and our Anthem van travels 39 miles round trip.

The average carpool travels 20 miles round trip and the bus riders travel an average of 30 miles round trip.”

Recently, Ms. Stogner held a trip reduction event and explained how the goals of the event were reached. “The goal of the event was to recognize 63 participants, or “stars”, for their ongoing commitment to reduce the carbon footprint. In addition, we have new employees joining us on a regular basis and this is another way of getting the information to them. We are always looking for new participants and this allows the opportunity to reach out and have questions answered.”

The event was successful with 135 employees stopping by, 13 expressed interest in carpool options and five who want to form a vanpool in the Surprise area.

Ms. Stogner credits the event’s success to great support from co-workers. ”It was time-consuming, but we accomplished our goal. My advice would be once you have your plan and ideas in place don’t change them, start early and ask for help.”

October is Rideshare Month, when Valley Metro encourages residents and commuters to use alternative modes of transportation, such as carpool and vanpool. Participants can save money, prevent pollution and reduce stress and traffic congestion.

Join in month-long activities. Register at sharetheride.com to find a carpool or vanpool, and track your commutes and enter to win great prizes. Pledge to try transit at your workplace and compete with Valley employers. Enjoy the many benefits of sharing the ride!

Every 49 miles driven equals one pound of pollution.
