THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15

In those days: Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian; and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here am I.” Then he said, “Do not come near ; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Responsorial Gradual Psalm 103

Saturday: The Lord is merciful and gracious.

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12

I want you to know, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same supernatural food and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless with most of them God was not pleased; for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things are warnings for us, not to desire evil as they did, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as a warning, but they were written down for our instruction, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.Verse before the Gospel

Gospel Luke 13:1-9

There were some present at that very time who told Jesus of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus? I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Behold, these three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down; why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Let it alone, sir, this year also, till I dig about it and put on manure. And if it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”We then sit for the homily. After this we stand to recite the Creed, which may be found on the accompanying purple card.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

During the preparation of the altar with the bread and wine, and as the gifts are honoured with incense, the following chants are sung by all:

Offertory Chant Psalm 19

As needed, the Lent Prose may also be sung at this point:

Then the Bishop invites the people to pray, and all reply May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Bishop then sings the Prayer over the Offerings.Prayer over the Offerings

Be pleased, O Lord, with these sacrificial offerings, and grant that we who beseech pardon for our own sins, may take care to forgive our neighbour. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer is begun by the Bishop. This concludes with the Sanctus, which may be found on the purple card.

THE COMMUNION RITE

Then follows the Our Father and the Agnus Dei, which can also be found on the purple card. During the distribution of Holy Communion, the Communion Chant is sung by the choir. After this the choir sings this motet by Palestrina. This verse, depicted in the Bishop’s coat of arms, describes our longing for God.

Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum, ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus.

Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks: so longeth my soul after thee, O God.

Following the motet, this hymn may be sung by all:

Sole hope of all the world, and Lord, Bestower of the great reward, Receive the prayers your servants raise; Accept our psalms and hymns of praise.

And though our consciences proclaim Our deep transgressions and our shame, Cleanse us, O God, we humbly plead, From sins of thought and word and deed.

Our sins remember thou no more; Forgive; thy mercy can restore; So take upon thee, Lord, our care, That pure in heart, we make our prayer.

Therefore accept, O Lord, this tide Of fast which thou hast sanctified, That we may reach by mystic ways The sacraments of Paschal days.

May he who is the threefold Lord On us confer this high reward In whom so long as worlds abide One only God is glorified.

Then the Bishop invites the people to pray, and all stand.

Prayer after Communion

As we receive the pledge of things yet hidden in heaven and are nourished whilst still on earth with the Bread that comes from on high, we humbly entreat you, O Lord, that what is being brought about in us in mystery may come to true completion. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer over the People & Apostolic Blessing

At the end of the Mass the Deacon announces the Apostolic Blessing and Plenary Indulgence. The Bishop sings the Prayer over the People and gives the blessing. As the Mass concludes, we sing Ave Regina Cælorum._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
