Preface to the Ordination RitesThe Holy Scriptures and ancient Christian writers make it clear that from the apostles’ time, there havebeen different ministries within the Church. In particular, since the time of the New Testament, three distinctorders of ordained ministers have been characteristic of Christ’s holy catholic Church. First, there is the order of bishops who carry on the apostolic work of leading, supervising, and uniting the Church. Secondly, associated with them are the presbyters, or ordained elders, in subsequent times generally knownas priests. Together with the bishops, they take part in the governance of the Church, in the carrying out ofits missionary and pastoral work, and in the preaching of the Word of God and administering his holySacraments. Thirdly, there are deacons who assist bishops and priests in all of this work. It is also a specialresponsibility of deacons to minister in Christ’s name to the poor, the sick, the suffering, and the helpless.

The persons who are chosen and recognized by the Church as being called by God to the ordained ministry are admitted to these sacred orders by solemn prayer and the laying on of episcopal hands. It hasbeen, and is, the intention and purpose of this Church to maintain and continue these three orders; andfor this purpose these services of ordination and consecration are appointed. No persons are allowed to exercise the offices of bishop, priest, or deacon in this Church unless they are so ordained, or have alreadyreceived such ordination with the laying on of hands by bishops who are themselves duly qualified to confer Holy Orders.

It is also recognized and affirmed that the threefold ministry is not the exclusive property of this portion of Christ’s catholic Church, but is a gift from God for the nurture of his people and the proclamation ofhis Gospel everywhere. Accordingly, the manner of ordaining in this Church is to be such as has been, and is, most generally recognized by Christian people as suitable for the conferring of the sacred orders ofbishop, priest, and deacon.

Concerning the Ordination of a BishopIn accordance with ancient custom, it is desirable, if possible, that bishops be ordained on Sundays andother feasts of our Lord or on the feasts of apostles or evangelists.

When a bishop is to be ordained, the Presiding Bishop of the Church, or a bishop appointed by the Presiding Bishop, presides and serves as chief consecrator. At least two other bishops serve as co-consecrators.Representatives of the presbyterate, diaconate, and laity of the diocese for which the new bishop is to beconsecrated, are assigned appropriate duties in the service.

From the beginning of the service until the Offertory, the chief consecrator presides from a chair placedclose to the people, so that all may see and hear what is done. The other bishops, or a convenient numberof them, sit to the right and left of the chief consecrator.

The bishop-elect is vested in a rochet or alb, without stole, tippet, or other vesture distinctive of ecclesiasticalor academic rank or order.

When the bishop-elect is presented, his full name (designated by the symbol N.N.) is used. Thereafter, it isappropriate to refer to him only by the Christian name by which he wishes to be known.

At the Offertory, it is appropriate that the bread and wine be brought to the Altar by the family or friendsof the newly ordained.

The family of the newly ordained may receive Communion before other members of the congregation.Opportunity is always given to the people to communicate.

The Ministry of the Word

The people sit.

The Lesson Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:

‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’

The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled withsmoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilthas departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’

The Epistle Acts 16:16-31

As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divinationand brought her owners much gain by soothsaying. She followed Paul and us, crying, “These menare servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she didfor many days. But Paul was annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I charge you in the nameof Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw thattheir hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market placebefore the rulers; and when they had brought them to the magistrates they said, “These men areJews and they are disturbing our city. They advocate customs which it is not lawful for us Romansto accept or practice.” The crowd joined in attacking them; and the magistrates tore the garments

off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows uponthem, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely. Having received thischarge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listeningto them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison wereshaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and every one’s fetters were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was aboutto kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do notharm yourself, for we are all here.” And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fearhe fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out and said, “Men, what must I do to besaved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

The Gospel John 15:12-17

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one hasgreater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know whatthe master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everythingthat I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him inmy name. With your fellow bishops you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world.Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope. Your joy will be to follow him who came, not to beserved, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Offertory Anthem Greater Love Hath No Man John IrelandMany waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Greater love hath no manthan this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who his own Self bare our sins in his own Body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified, in theName of the Lord Jesus; Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that ye should shew forth thepraises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 All people that on earth do dwell, 3 O enter then his gates with praise,Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice. approach with joy his courts unto;Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell; praise, laud, and bless his name always,Come ye before Him and rejoice. for it is seemly so to do.

2 The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, 4 For why? the Lord our God is good:without our aid he did us make; his mercy is for ever sure; we are his folk, he doth us feed, his truth at all times firmly stood, and for his sheep he doth us take. and shall from age to age endure.

5 To Father, Son and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from men and from the angel-hostbe praise and glory evermore. Amen. –W. Kethe

Page 25: The Liturgy for - Episcopal Diocese of PittsburghEcce sacerdos magnus Anton Bruckner Ecce sacerdos magnus, Behold, a great priest, qui in diebus suis placuit Deo. who in his days pleased

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, FatherAlmighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages.

Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The people stand or kneel.

The Bishop continuesWe give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us increation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets;and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us outof error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had giventhanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,25

Page 26: The Liturgy for - Episcopal Diocese of PittsburghEcce sacerdos magnus Anton Bruckner Ecce sacerdos magnus, Behold, a great priest, qui in diebus suis placuit Deo. who in his days pleased

Bishop and PeopleWe remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

The Bishop continuesAnd we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In thefullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenlycountry where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All pray together

The Signs of Office

The RingThe ring may date from as early as the 13th century and bears a gold inlay bas-relief of ChristPantokrator based on the image found in Byzantine coins. An immigrant fit for Pittsburgh, possibly Syrian in origin, and made of iron and silver alloy, the ring has traveled widely over theyears, coming to the Iron City most recently from Jerusalem.

The CrozierIn memory of the new bishop’s first American ancestor, a Welsh Anglican priest sent to Marylandby the Bishop of Oxford in 1702, the staff is made of Welsh cherry in a traditional Welsh design. The center layer of the crook is aluminum and culminates in a cross, referring to the motto, crux est mundi medicina. The staff was made by Joe Musialowski of Cheshire, England, who frequently makes crooks for working shepherds.

The Pectoral CrossThe Cross incorporates three steel nails, smaller replicas of those sometimes used in crucifixionsaround the time of Jesus; their arrangement is similar to a pattern from the Community of theCross of Nails, an international community of reconciliation founded at Coventry Cathedral. The gold medallion at the center reproduces the Lamb of the Resurrection from the pectoral cross of the English bishop and theologian Charles Gore. At the foot of the cross is a red sapphireset in a gold disk, representing the parishes of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The cross was created byjeweller Joanna Gollberg of Asheville, North Carolina.
