What was I doing thirty years ago? Let me see; play pick-up stickswith neighbours, play hide and seek with cousins, go on imaginarytea parties with my dolls….. Arggghhh! I AM GETTING LONG IN THETOOTH! Sorry, sorry, sorry typical early thirties women’s response toage. Coming back to the point, backward compatibility is some whatundervalued by people nowadays? Today we cannot even get ourcomputer to remain obsolete proof in less than a decade! Lets take that into context, *11977 Nikon shifts SLR lens type to AI(Automatic maximum aperture Indexing). Yes that was almost thirtyyears ago when AI lenses were introduced and today on your shinynew Nikon D200 when its get mounted you get metering! How’s thatfor a hat trick?

Forgive me for rambling but I do get nostalgic when a classic like theAF 105mm/f2.8D gets refreshed (see our latest lens announcementpage 19)! Do not get me wrong, I strongly believe that any productthat can be improved should and when the quicker it is done the better!Since the launch of our AF-S DX VR 18~200 Nikkor Zoom f3.5~5.6G,I have never seen so much excitement from consumers for a lens since!Hopefully this new lens will generate as much enthusiasm as theprevious launch.

Along the same vein, our latest reiteration of our software NikonCapture NX is going to bring a sparkle of imagination in a many auser’s way in which they are going to do post processing. Not to blowour trumpets but I feel this software is going to be a welcome editionfor many photographers; professional and amateurs al ike!

This issue also has the privilege to feature David PC Tay, who is theCEO of SPH Magazines which has among its stable of magazines inthe likes of Her World, Home & Décor, Her World Brides, Citta Bella etc. He is also the President of The Photographic Society of Singapore, oneof his various high profile portfolios. Despite his busy schedule, hetakes time off to explore the world with his newly acquired D2X system.

By the way, do take a look at the winning entry from Mr Wong ChekPoh titled “RAFFLES CITY” from our photography contest. Goodcomposition from a unique point of view plus nice geometric lines.Interestingly enough, the play on light and shadows made this evenmore appealing. Congratulation Mr Wong, you will hearing from usvery soon. By the way, you got to love our AF DX 10.5mm Fisheyef2.8 lens!

Having seen the rave about Wifi technology inCoolpix P1/P2, Nikon take one step forward withthe introduction of Coolpix P3 and Coolpix P4.

The COOLPIX P3 and P4 feature a 1/1.8-inchCCD. And because they offer 8.1 effectivemegapixels of image resolution that ensure shotsstay breathtakingly clear even when significantlyenlarged.

With the 11 wide-areas, it enables the CoolpixP3 and P4 to focus more accurately throughanalysis of a larger area of the frame. As a result, photographers can experiment with moreimaginative compositions, with main subjectspositioned away from the center or multiplesubjects, and still be assured of crisp, sharp results. For those who want more control, Coolpix P3 andP4 offers Aperture Priority Mode which allow theuser to control the aperture of the camera thuscontrolling the depth of view. A large aperturesfor attractive background blurring or stop down

to small apertures to extend crisp focus into thedistance – all while the camera automaticallyselects the most appropriate shutter speed foroptimized exposure.

To promote a higher level of photographic funand freedom, Coolpix P3 comes equipped withIEEE 802.11b/g LAN support.

There is also range of Advanced Scene modes (9Advanced Scene modes; 7 Scene modes) that givephotographers the ability to capture a single scenewith entirely different moods through the use ofthree effects that vary brightness, color intensity, sharpnes s , no i se reduc t ion and more .

For sports lover, COOLPIX P3 and P4 also featurecontinuous shooting at up to 1.8 frames per second. This capability is also complemented by 5 shotbuffer shooting that allows users to keep shootingin a continuous burst and have the camera recordthe last five images taken. Such functionality can

be great when trying to capture an event thatcould happen at any imminent moment.

The COOLPIX P3 and P4 make it easy to shootmovies with sound, with a choice of three modesoffering up to 30fps performance. There’s also aTime-lapse movie mode that uses pictures shotwith the Interval timer shooting function to createa movie in which the action appears speeded up.

Images can even be improved in-camera throughthe use of three innovative Nikon functions.Face-priority AF cleverly detects people’s faces toachieve sharp focus on them, no matter wherethey happen to be located in the frame.In-Camera Red-Eye Fix helps users make red-eyea thing of the past. Detecting the annoying red-eye effect that can sometimes occur in flashphotography, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix providesautomatic compensation for more flattering,natural-looking portraits in low light. There’s alsoNikon’s unique D-Lighting function available inplayback mode, which can improve underexposedimages or shots taken with too much back lightby creating a copy of an image with added lightand detail wherever necessary and well-exposedareas left exactly as they were.

Vibration ReductionThe most exciting element of the COOLPIX P3 and P4, is theinnovative VR (Vibration Reduction) capability. Originallydeveloped for Nikon SLRs, lens shift VR capability is availablein two modes that compensate for camera movement to realizea shooting experience akin to shooting at shutter speeds threestops faster.

The VR comes in two modes, Normal and Act ive .In Normal mode, VR compensate for minor movement that mayoccurs during handshake while Active mode compensate formore pronounce movement for example when the photographeris on a moving platform. VR also works in Movie taking mode, which enable to user to capture less shaky video footage.

AF-S VR MICRO-NIKKOR 105MMF/2.8G IF-ED

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased toannounce the introduction of the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED, the world’s firstmacro lens equipped with Nikon Silent WaveMotor (SWM) and Vibration Reduction (VR)systems. It offers a host of Nikon's advancedoptical features and technologies such as NanoCrystal Coat, Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass andInternal Focusing (IF) . The AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor105mm f/2.8G IF-ED is engineered for use withboth Nikon DX format digital and 35mm filmSLR cameras.

This lens has been developed to meet userdemand for a 105mm macro lens equipped withSWM, IF and VR system.

The SWM ensures fast and quiet autofocusing andquick switching between autofocus and manualoperation. The IF system also offers a non-rotatingfront lens element that facilitates the use of circularpolarizing filters.

With the enhanced VR system (VRII), photographerscan capture sharp images at shutter speedsapproximately 4 stops* slower [at near infinity to3m (1/30x reproduction ratio)] than wouldotherwise be possible. The negative effects ofcamera shake are greatly amplified in close-upphotography and can affect image sharpnessgreatly. The incorporation of Nikon VR technologyin a Micro-Nikkor lens expands versatility by, forthe first time, providing the sharpness benefits ofVR and improv ing hand-he ld c lo se -up

MAJOR FEATURES

• The world’s first macro lens offering reproductionratios of up to 1:1 and featuring the Nikon VibrationReduction System (VRII) allows high-quality hand-held macro shooting.

• The VRII function minimizes camera shake by offeringthe equivalent of a shutter speed 4 stops* faster atnear infinity to 3m (1/30x reproduction ratio)shooting.

• The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast andquiet autofocusing, and quick switching betweenautofocus and manual operation.

• Nikon ED glass element minimizes chromaticaberration. Outstanding Nikkor optical performancemakes it suitable for photography with both Nikondigital and 35mm film SLR cameras.

• Nikon Nano Crystal Coat further ensures superioroptical performance by virtually eliminating internallens element reflections.

WATERIN

MOTION

. . . /continue on page 20PG26

In this second part of a series of techniques sharedby Steven Yee, he shall share with you the tips onhow to capture that motion of the water. StevenYee is the instructor for the Nikon D50 andD70/D70s workshop which he conducts atThe Photographic Socie ty of S ingapore.More o f h i s work s can be f ound onwww.stevenyeephotography.com

“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained inwater.” (Loran Eisely, The Immense Journey, 1957)

No doubt about it, some of the most stunning imagesever captured has some elements of water in it.Everyday, we get in touch with water. It can be theflow of your bath tub tap, or the fountain that is infront of your office building. If we go for our travelholiday, we will also chance upon the gentle streams, cascading waterfalls, beautiful fountains or even thestrong gushes of waves hitting the shoreline.

Somehow, most of us would probably ask some ofour family members to pose a shot with the waterfeature. We often overlook the fact that with amagical touch of your play of exposure, you canturn the scene into a magical world of fantasy, withthat blur motion of the flowing water.

It may sound daunting for some to believe that theyare able to capture such splendid images which the

professional photographers capture with ease. Witha little bit of effort and experimentation with thefollowing tips, you are on your way to getting thatvery first professional looking shot of water in motion.

The secret behind getting the water blurred in motionlies in the shutter speed. When we do photographyof water in motion, we have 2 choices, either tofreeze the water with a fast shutter speed of at least1/125 or blur its motion with a shutter speed of lessthan 1 second. Usually, we would like to capture themotion blur of the water.

For the benefit of those who missed the previousissue, here is a recap. As you look through yourviewfinder (for DSLR users) or your LCD screen (forCoolpix users), you may find something appearing:125 f3.5 – it means that you have a shutter speed

of 1/125 with aperture f3.515” f22 – it means that you have a shutter speed

of 15 seconds with aperture f22

The clue here is f22 is a smaller aperture than f3.5,which means that with f22, you will have a slowershutter speed as compared to f3.5. Smaller apertureallows less light to enter the lens, hence you willneed more exposure time in the form of a slowershutter speed. To clarify, 1/125 is a faster shutterspeed compared to 15 seconds. For the DSLR users, you can set aperture size easily to f22 with theAperture Priority Mode. For the Coolpix users, aswith all compact digital cameras, your limitation liesin the fact that your smallest aperture is likely to bef8 or f11. The smaller the aperture, the slower theshutter speed. If you can understand this fundamental, you are on your way to getting the image done.

To capture that motion blur of the water, your targetshutter speed is 1 seconds or slower. We shall discusson how to get it done:

• Setting your camera to Aperture Priority Mode, adjust your aperture to a small one until the

camera meter reads 1 second for shutter speed.Sometimes, the lighting might be a bit too strongand it is impossible to achieve 1 second. Youcan overcome this problem by setting your ISOto the lowest, putting a piece of Neutral Densityfilter or Polarisor filter onto your lens, which willhelp allow less light to enter the lens, henceresulting in slower shutter speed.

• Setting your camera to Shutter Priority Mode, adjust your shutter speed to 1 second. Just awarning, if you use this method, you have toensure that the aperture does not blink or showHi, which means over exposure. If you have overexposure, you may like to set your ISO to thelowest and put on the Neutral Density filter orPolarisor filter.

• Setting your camera to Manual Mode, adjust theaperture and shutter speed on your own withthe aim of reaching 1 second for the shutter

speed. Use a lowest ISO, with the Neutral Densityfilter or the Polarisor filter if need be.

Usually, you may end up using settings like 1” f22at ISO100 or ISO200 (subject to differing lightingconditions) with the Polarisor filter if you want toshoot the water in motion blur in the day time. Forthe DSLR users, it is not be a problem for you to setthe aperture to f22 with most lenses. For the Coolpixusers, your limitation of f8 or f11 being the smallestaperture will mean that it is quite hard to achievethe 1 second shutter speed with your compact digitalcamera. In your case, you may set your aperture tof8 or f11, use a lowest ISO, add the Neutral Densityfilter or Polarisor filter (with the Cokin filter attachmentfor compact camera), which may probably give youreading like 8 f11 (subject to differing lightingconditions). This setting may get you some degreeof water in motion blur. As the saying goes, “betterthan not trying”.

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1 second, Aperture f25, D2X, 18-70mm DX lens. I chanced upon a flowing stream during a trip in China. We asked the driver to stop the car and explore possibleangles. There are not many rocks or contours in the water. Shooting the water flow alone will be quite boring. In the end, I decidedto use the twigs as a frame effect to complement the flow of the water.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1 second, Aperture f25, D2X, 80-200mm f2.8 ED lens. When we shoot the flow of a waterfall, it is good that we take into consideration the flow direction of the water.A straight cascading water will not be as interesting as the above, where the water flow gets interrupted by the rock formation, whichresults in a more interesting flow pattern.

At shutter speed slower than 1 second, we willdefinitely need a tripod as well as a cable releaseor a remote control. If your camera does not supportthe use of the cable release or the remote control, you may like to activate the self timer in the camerato trigger the shot. If at all possible, avoid pressingthe shutter release button for such slow shutter speed, even if you have a steady tripod. You may like toavoid any form of camera shake if possible.

Another thing to share with you is the degree ofmotion blur of the water. Regardless with 1 second,2 seconds, 3 seconds or slower shutter speed, thewater will be equally blurred. The cause of concernhere is as the shutter speed gets too slow, you mayend up with other subjects blurred such as the movingleaves due to the wind etc. Hence, if you purely wantthe water in motion blur with the rest of the imageas sharp as possible, you may like to settle for justthe 1 second shutter speed with a decent tripod.

Things to look out for if you want to shoot the waterin motion blur:

• Look out for the direction of flow of the water.

• Avoid the angle where the water is lit by thestrong sunlight. This will cause a white “burnt”patch in the image.

• Look out for complementing subjects, such asleaves, rocks, anything that is stationary. Youwill need something stationary to contrast againstthe moving water.

With the above in mind, you can use this techniqueand tips in your search for the water feature. Trysome of the local places such as the Bird Park, Zooor Botanic Garden which has some nice waterfeatures. These can be good practice targets for yourfuture photography expeditions to waterfall “infested”places like China’s Jiuzhaigou etc.

COMING NEXT...Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shallshare with you how to get great shots with the useof reflections. He shall explore the properties ofreflection, the tips and creative angles that youcan adopt for your practice. Look out for it.

To capture motion blur of the water but with some degree of sharpness for the branch is technically challenging. Hence,I decided to try the 1 second shutter speed. It works!

Despite his busy schedule as a Chief ExecutiveOfficer of SPH Magazines, he has given Singaporephotography its much-needed support. He hasserved the PSS since 1975, and has been itsPresident since 1990 – the longest serving PSSPresident todate.

As a practitioner of the art, David Tay is widelyknown for his creativity. He was the first Singaporephotographer to be awarded the coveted CulturalMedallion in 1982 for his artistic achievementsand contributions to photography. His talent wasalso recognised by The Royal Photographic Societyof Great Britain and the International Federationof Photographic Art which have awarded him theFellowship (FRPS) and Honorary Excellence (HonEFIAP) distinctions respectively.

Mr Tay‘s passion in photography started in 1960,since then, he has always encourage youngstersto scale greater heights in the field of photographyand is ever ready to give them assistance andguidance. Although Mr Tay has written manyarticles over the last decade on the benefits andtrends of digital technology changing the landscapeof photography, surprisingly, he himself hadresisted using digital cameras. He was aware ofthe convenience and advantages they offered, butstayed faithful to his Hassablad and Leicas. It isperhaps a case of “old habits die hard”.

Three months ago, he acquired a D2X with70-200mm and 15-55mm lenses. He had his firsttry with the new “toys”at this year’s ChingayParade. Mr Tay himself was so pleased with theresults from his digital SLR that he abandoned hisconventional cameras on his vacation in Southern

PRESS RELEASE10 FEBRUARY 2006

PHOTOGRAPHERS GOINGP L A C E S : S I N G A P O R EYOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERAWARD OFFERS AN IDEALSTEPPING STONE FORYOUNG PHOTO BUFFSImagine getting started on photography at thetender age of 9! That was exactly what StevenYee did. Today, at the age of 26, he is a young, accomplished photographer and HonorarySecretary of The Photographic Society ofSingapore. He has also secured honours anddistinctions with The Royal Photographic Societyof Great Britain and the International Federationof Photographic Art among others. Having helda few solo exhibitions and his work published inseveral photo publications, Steven also instructsat PSS and photography workshops. However, there are not many others like him. In fact, youngand zealous photographers who venture to pursuetheir passion are hard to come by.

In this time and age where paper chase is rampant, parents feel the pressure to conform and encouragetheir children to focus on academic performance. Recounts Darren Soh, 29, full-time independentphotographer who began exploring photographyat 13, “… Initially, my mother was not exceptionallysupportive of the fact that I had an honours degreeand decided to be a photographer instead oftrying for a ‘real’ job.” Thankfully of course, sheis now one of Darren’s biggest fans. Darren’sworks have been f requent ly featured ininternational magazines such as DestinAsian andTIME magazine. Many may also have seen his

works in numerous solo and joint photo exhibitionsheld in the past 7 years. Amongst the manyaccolades he has received are InternationalPhotography Awards–Architecture Category(Honorable Ment ion) and Commonweal thPhotographic Awards (Highly Commended) 2004.

An internationally-acclaimed photographer whois testament to the fact that photography could bemore than a passion is none other than RusselWong. With a portfolio that includes celebritiesranging from political leaders to internationalsuperstars, Russel started photography at 18. Asa business undergraduate at the University ofOregon, he catapulted into a photographic careerunexpectedly when his photo of world record milerSebastian Coe made the cover for Track & FieldNews in the United States. A self-confessed ‘crazytrack nut’, Wong had cycled to a Sunday morningtalk in the park by Coe, shooting him on a roll ofKodachrome and a $160 manual Topcon camera– a gift from his father who’s a fervent amateurphotographer. A broad look at Wong’s careerand development over 25 years discloses a practicethat is marked by a confluence of opportunities, resourcefulness, obsessive drive and focus, a lethalcombination of strong commitment, tenacity andrelentlessness.

In the same league but of a different genre, LeeTiah Khee, Chief Photographer of Lianhe Zaobaoalso started photography at a tender age. In fact,he began without a camera! Due to disadvantagedfamily circumstances, Lee used to borrow camerasfrom his friends to participate in the activities ofhis school’s photo club. The ultimate confidencebooster came when he won the gold medal of anational student photography competition (juniorsection) at the age of 14. Soon after, heparticipated in even more contests, working &studying part-time to finance his hobby. At 17,he was awarded Overall Best in the ASEAN PhotoSalon. Little did he know that from hobby topassion, photography – more specifically, photojournalism – became his vocation. “I’minquisitive by nature about things and peoplearound me. Subjects or scenes with a humantouch always excite me and I love the challengeof capturing the mood and character of the peopleinvolved.” Truly, photojournalism is one of thebest ways to do this, especially if well-framedphotographs are taken at the right place and atthe right time.

Sharing his vision on the future of photographyin Singapore, SYPA Steering Committee ChairmanKwek Leng Joo said, “A vibrant and culturednation requires an open and active arts scene.Photography, the art that represents emotions andthough t s and a power f u l med ium fo rcommunication, ought to be promoted amongstthe young. I t is sad to note that youngphotographers only account for a very smallpercentage of the local photographic community. This is evident in major photo clubs which havean average of only 5 to 10 junior members. Thisis precisely why we were spurred to introduce thefirst-ever Singapore Young Photographer Award(SYPA). We hope to discover and nurture buddingphotographic talents and attract more youngstersto pursue photography.”

Projected to be given out bi-annually, SYPA aimsto scout for photo talents between 13 and 25 yearsof age. Apart from winning attractive prizes ofup to $5,000 cash, winners will be invited tophotography enrichment courses and activitieswith mentorship by experienced photographers.

This Award is an extension of the To Singaporewith Love photo tribute celebrating the nation’s40th birthday last year. The opening date forsubmission is Friday, 10 February 2006 and theclosing date is 15 June 2006. All winning entries,as well as works of Steven Yee, Darren Soh, RusselWong and Lee Tiah Khee will be displayed duringthe prize presentation ceremony-cum-exhibitionin July.

Darren believes that “SYPA can be a very importantstep in the right direction” in elevating photographyto a professional level in Singapore. Otherphotographers interviewed also expressed delightand support for this inaugural Award which theyfeel will help to ignite the interest and passion inphotography amongst the young.
