Introduction | What is OCW?

An OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners throughout the world.

o OCW is not a distance-learning initiative: there are no degrees granted, no student/faculty interactions and no transcripts.

o OCW is a collection of high-quality learning materials presented in the form of courses.

o OCW materials are there for the taking (and for transformation).



OCW is not a distance-learning initiative: there are no degrees granted, no student/faculty interactions and no transcripts.

o But OCW can complement a distance-learning initiative, taking content from and directing learners toward an existing e-learning curriculum.

o OCW has much to learn from e-learning methodology.

High-quality learning materials, such as:o Planning Materials: syllabus, due dates,

learning goals, grading standards.

o Subject Materials: lecture notes, readings, discussion questions.

o Learning Activities: daily assignments, problem sets, exams, paper topics, projects.

o Related Resources: tools, links, guides, suggestions for further study.



OCW materials are there for the taking (and for transformation).

o Reuse: use the work verbatim, just exactly as you found it

o Rework: alter or transform the work so that it better meets your needs

o Remix: combine the (verbatim or altered) work with other works to better meet your needs

o Redistribute: share the verbatim work, the reworked work, or the remixed work with others.

Goal | Recruitment

• A 2005 Poll showed that 50% of incoming MIT students were aware of MIT OCW.

• 35% of those students based their choice of MIT at least in part on their experience of MIT OCW

• By mid-October of their first year, 95% of those students had visited the OCW site.


Goal | Retention

An OCW site provides students with the potential for self-paced review of study materials before, during and after taking a course. Such review greatly increases a student’s chances of success in both that course and subsequent courses which build upon its teachings.


Goal | Advising

The ability to view OCW materials prior to enrollment allows students to make more informed choices about which courses and majors are right for them.

Likewise, advisors will be able to base their recommendations on concrete information about courses, their requirements and their benefits.


Goal | Evaluating

The ability to view OCW materials at the time of tenure and promotion allows colleagues to make more informed evaluation of faculty course design and execution.

Likewise, a center for teaching and learning is able to base its recommendations on longer-term observation of a faculty member’s courses, rather than on a single classroom visit.
