Introduction | What is OCW?

An OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners throughout the world.

o OCW is not a distance-learning initiative: there are no degrees granted, no student/faculty interactions and no transcripts.

o OCW is a collection of high-quality learning materials presented in the form of courses.

o OCW materials are there for the taking (and for transformation).

Introduction | What is OCW?

OCW is not a distance-learning initiative: there are no degrees granted, no student/faculty interactions and no transcripts.

o But OCW can complement a distance-learning initiative, taking content from and directing learners toward an existing e-learning curriculum.

o OCW has much to learn from e-learning methodology.

Introduction | What is OCW?

High-quality learning materials, such as:o Planning Materials: syllabus, due dates,

learning goals, grading standards.

o Subject Materials: lecture notes, readings, discussion questions.

o Learning Activities: daily assignments, problem sets, exams, paper topics, projects.

o Related Resources: tools, links, guides, suggestions for further study.

Introduction | What is OCW?

OCW materials are there for the taking (and for transformation).

o Reuse: use the work verbatim, just exactly as you found it

o Rework: alter or transform the work so that it better meets your needs

o Remix: combine the (verbatim or altered) work with other works to better meet your needs

o Redistribute: share the verbatim work, the reworked work, or the remixed work with others.

Your institution was founded with a mission to… insert your mission statement here

• MIT: Best serve nation and world

• JHSPH: Improve global public health

• Utah State: Teach. . . so that members of the working classes might obtain a practical college education

• Notre Dame: Catholic social mission

• UN University: contribute, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are a concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States.

Michigan State University’s Mission

Our mission is to advance knowledge and transform lives by... advancing outreach, engagement, and economic development activities that are innovative, research-driven, and lead to a better quality of life for individuals and communities, at home and around the world…

“Land-grant to World-grant Institution”

Page 16: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Discussion

An OCW site will help us serve that mission by increasing the reach and effectiveness of…

name one or more mission-oriented activities.

Page 18: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Goal | Reputation

An OCW site can showcase areas of excellence in our university, such as name specific programs. Heightened awareness of these programs not only will attract talented students and faculty to our school but also will increase the visibility of our faculty within their disciplines.

Page 19: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Faculty Reputation

OCW enhances faculty reputation

• 34% of faculty who have published on MIT OCW agree the site has increased their professional standing

Page 20: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Faculty Reputation• Capture and Disseminate

o faculty work has greater impact than merely in the immediate classroom or event

• Recognition among Peerso quicker than peer-reviewed journalso name is out there as an experto examples: www.nanohub.org

• Recognition within Institutiono evidence of work is displayed and recognized by the

university

Page 21: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Discussion

To what reputation does your institution aspire?

Page 22: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Recruitment

• A 2005 Poll showed that 50% of incoming MIT students were aware of MIT OCW.

• 35% of those students based their choice of MIT at least in part on their experience of MIT OCW

• By mid-October of their first year, 95% of those students had visited the OCW site.

Page 23: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Retention

An OCW site provides students with the potential for self-paced review of study materials before, during and after taking a course. Such review greatly increases a student’s chances of success in both that course and subsequent courses which build upon its teachings.

Page 24: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Advising

The ability to view OCW materials prior to enrollment allows students to make more informed choices about which courses and majors are right for them.

Likewise, advisors will be able to base their recommendations on concrete information about courses, their requirements and their benefits.

Page 25: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Evaluating

The ability to view OCW materials at the time of tenure and promotion allows colleagues to make more informed evaluation of faculty course design and execution.

Likewise, a center for teaching and learning is able to base its recommendations on longer-term observation of a faculty member’s courses, rather than on a single classroom visit.

Page 26: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | Service Learning

• Extending the effects of annual Notre Dame Forum

• Promoting localization of service models—transforming "plunge" projects into community-based learning.

• Attracting collaborators

Page 27: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | International Engagement (internal)

• 82% of faculty say OCW is an important element of MIT’s international engagement

• Supports student groups working internationallyo MIT International Science and Technology

Initiativeso Africa Internet Technology Initiative

• Sparks international collaborationso Dean Daniel Hastings and Italian Space Agency

Page 28: OCW- Open Sharing, Local Payoff

Open Sharing, Local Payoff     October 28, 2008

Goal | International Engagement (external)
