A Message from Executive Director Richard Kravetz
Our Power is in our People I am proud to share some exciting developments supporting the work we do here at Domestic Violence Solutions. Blue Shield of California has embraced our organization through a division called Blue Shield Against Violence, which recently organized a cohort of 20 top professionals in our field to perform and participate in specialized trainings, and network with other top providers all over California. Blue Shield’s Strong Field Project works to ensure that the best and most current practices are known and utilized at DV agencies statewide. After an in-depth selection process, DVS’ Residential Programs Director Kim Barnett, MA, has been selected to participate in this 18 month long program! We know how much Kim has to contribute to this project, and are excited to know that she will bring her experiences with the project to her work right here at DVS. In addition, Blue Shield, working with The Women’s Fund of California, has awarded DVS an “Organizational Strength Grant” – in the amount of $100,000 – to upgrade DVS’ IT structure, reduce our carbon footprint, and reduce costs through the efficient use of ‘green technology’ across all seven of our county-wide facilities. The upgrade of our record and statistic-keeping functions, and the enhancement of our ability to communicate effectively among facilities spread across 75 miles, will be a huge help to our staff and our clients. It will reduce our costs, and allow DVS to become ‘state of the art’ in each area; something we could not have done without the assistance of Blue Shield and

The Women’s Fund. Blue Shield also funded a review of DVS’ financial profile and accounting procedures by the national Non-Profit Finance Fund, which issued its report to our Board at the end of May. The review will help DVS with its strategy for dealing with the challenging financial climate we anticipate coming in the next months and years. DVS’ Controller, Roberta Weighill, and Accounting Manager, Crystal Martinez, were complimented for their thoroughness and efficiency in managing DVS’ accounts. The procedural gyrations required to apply for grants and the bureaucratic red tape necessary to manage and be accountable for them once they are granted is simply mind-boggling. And so it is especially gratifying to see that Roberta’s and Crystal’s efforts were so praised by an organization of NPFF’s stature and expertise. Our Grant Manager, Nic Daniel masterfully obtained most that Blue Shield had to offer this year. Our Teen Services Coordinator, Christy Haynes, MA, recently presented a powerful new tool in DVS’ teen program – a multi-media production at Santa Barbara High School of What is Love. Presented in an assembly format, this student participation program on teen dating

President’s Report
Welcome Emeriti and Honorary Council The challenges faced by DVS in the last year have been daunting but not insurmountable. One of the results of our continuing effort to meet these challenges and evolve as an organization, has been the realization that we are not alone in our passion to protect women and children from abuse. Recognizing that our values are shared and supported by many formidable people in our community, we, as a Board, have decided to formally acknowledge and recruit these like-minded individuals by creating an Emeritus Board and an Honorary Council. The Emeritus Board will be composed of former active DVS Board members, who continue to support our mission through their current participation and donations to events and projects. Although they have no voting rights, they will be periodically consulted for their input and expertise. We welcome the following new founding members of our new Emeritus Board:Emerti

and domestic violence depicts an actual survivor’s story in dramatic detail. The participation of law enforcement and legal counsel specializing in teen-issues, and Christy’s inter-active discussion stimulated a lot of thought provoking discussion in each of four separate assemblies, attended by every student in the school. In addition to being well-received by students and faculty, many students approached DVS counselors (present for this purpose) for information and/or support after the presentation. We plan to present What is Love in high schools throughout the county in the coming weeks and months. Reaching our teens is a profoundly powerful way to prevent or interrupt the cycle of violence, and we are proud of, and excited about what Christy has accomplished. And, there is a recurring theme laced throughout these paragraphs: DVS is so fortunate to have the very talented
and dedicated personnel we rely on, year after year. As complex as it is to operate a County-wide non-profit, with multiple residential and non-residential programs, and the labyrinth of funding sources and reporting obligations, the success of DVS comes down to the people who work here. Finally, in a year when California has cut its social services budget to the bone, the legislature and governor recently restored $20.4M in funding to California’s domestic violence shelters! This will provide crucial funding for DVS this year, and enable DVS to continue working to upgrade our programs and infrastructure, and continue our work to stop the ‘silent epidemic’ of domestic violence in our beautiful county. Thank you for your interest, your own commitment, and your support. We cannot do this work without you. Richard Kravetz Executive Director

Holiday Happiness for All For most of us, the holiday season is one of the busiest yet happiest times of the year, a time for planning family get togethers, decorating our homes and tackling our gift lists. But domestic abuse is not a seasonal issue, and the shelters at DVS are often overwhelmed with even more new residents, especially at this time of year.
Many people have been compassionately drawn to help DVS over the holidays, with at least four parallel volunteer groups striving to ensure that all the families at the DVS shelters experience some joy over the holiday season. Members of the annual Springtime Committee, The Secret Sisters, The 3 Wishes Candy Cane program and The Unitarian Society have provided everything from Christmas trees and decorations to gifts and holiday meals to shelter families.
DVS Client Advocate Bonny Uribe has agreed to coordinate all these generous donations into one program now known as Holiday Happiness for All.
Co-President Claudette Roehrig was first introduced to the needs and programs of DVS five years ago when Board Member Kathy Borgers explained DVS’ mission. Claudette was so touched, she immediately launched The 3 Wishes Candy Cane program. All the children at the shelters were asked which three things they wanted for Christmas. Claudette attached one wish per candy cane with the child’s first name, gender and age and distributed them in three different places she visited most often – her gym, her hair salon and her horse boarding facility. The participants put the candy cane on their wrapped presents, and Claudette and her family made sure the gifts were delivered to the shelters. This program was received most generously by the participants, and it has become a special annual event for Claudette and her family who now look forward to helping in this way every year. The Roehrig family and the many enthusiastic participants have provided amazing gifts including bikes, clothes, dolls, and IPods.
Another ongoing program was started by former Board Member Sally Hamilton who for many years has
coordinated gift giving with her church, The Unitarian Society. Each year she asks Bonny for individual gift wishes for women and children and gets the word out for others to buy, wrap and deliver the gifts to the shelter the Sunday before Christmas. Last year Sally delivered nearly 80 gifts!!
Longtime Springtime and Emeritus Board member Susannah Rake rallied fellow Springtime committee members to arrange for local Christmas tree lot owners to, at first, offer discounts or donate Christmas trees to the shelters. For the past four years, and currently, the local Prudential California Realty offices have generously embraced the Christmas tree donation program. Other Springtime members including Laurie Tilson and her Special Sisters provided decorations, holiday meals and personally selected gifts.
It is Claudette’s belief that people want to give and these programs make it easy and possible. Many participants have felt a connection to a child or family even though they have never met. Sometimes people pick a family who resembles their own – a boy and a girl who might be about the same age as their own children. It has been extremely rewarding and challenging for all involved to make sure every wish is granted, since there can be up to 21 families housed at the shelters in Santa Barbara at any one time, and last minute check-ins are common during the stressful holiday period. The Lompoc and Santa Maria shelters house an additional 20 families, and they too would greatly benefit from our generosity. Contact Bonny Uribe at [email protected] with any questions and to participate in Holiday Happiness for All.

Thank you Alegria Road Social Club
Domestic Violence Solutions operates a transitional housing program, known as “Second Stage”, for women who have met their goals during their stay at the emergency shelter. Women and children may reside up to 18 months in one-bedroom apartments, while receiving group and individual counseling and other supportive services. Second Stage is designed to help survivors of domestic violence make long-term positive changes for themselves and for their children.
Each time a woman graduates from Second Stage, she often needs many items to set up her new home. Thankfully, an especially dedicated group of volunteers and donors known as the Algeria Road Social Club jumps to action that when that call comes in. DVS client Advocate Bonny Uribe knows she can count on the Alegria Road volunteers when an apartment needs a “set up”.
Dick and Judy Cousineau have been helping to furnish apartments at Second Stage since 2004. Dick and his first wife had both supported a domestic violence shelter in Whittier, California, and after Dick’s wife died he moved to Santa Barbara, married Judy, and they both began helping the emergency shelter. They provided shoe box size containers that were filled with toys for the children who arrived at Second Stage.
Soon, the Cousineaus recruited their friends on the street to help furnish the apartments for DVS Second Stage housing, and at that time claimed the name Alegria Road Social Club. John Torell, a member of their Neighborhood Association, is the newest member, and is known for his love of shopping, travel and fine restaurants. Pat Ward, a retired social worker, worked with
domestic violence and rape crisis issues when she lived in Connecticut. Pat is also a member and volunteer for the Assistance League of Santa Barbara and loves buying kitchen items for the shelter. Janet Sevatus started giving financial help two years ago and likes that her money goes to a local organization. Julie and Dan Moore have been gifting for five years. Julie loves shopping for children’s gifts because it makes her feel like she’s shopping for her own grandchildren.
DVS and its clients are truly grateful to these special folks who have helped so many families as they reestablish their lives and homes in a safe and supportive atmosphere.
