СВЯТО ГОСПОДНЬОГО ВОЗНЕСІННЯ

Празник Господнього Вознесіння завжди

припадає у четвер на сороковий день після Христового Воскресіння. Це один з великих Господських празників і має дев'ятиденне по-празденство. Він звеличує подію Христового Вознесення на небо та підкреслює її значення для Христа і для нас. Святий Йоан Золотоустий у своїй проповіді на Вознесіння каже: "Сьогодні людський рід совершенно примире-ний з Богом. Зникла давня боротьба й ворожне-ча. Ми, що були недостойні жити й на землі, вознесені на небо. Сьогодні стаємо наслідника-ми небесного царства, ми, що не вартуємо й земного, виходимо на небо й унасліджуємо престол Царя і Господа. А людська природа, перед якою херувим боронив рай, піднесена тепер понад усякого херувима".

У пам'ятках трьох перших сторіч нічого не сказано про цей празник. Не згадує про ньо-го й письменник Ориген († к. 251), який пере-раховує християнські празники у восьмій книзі свого твору Проти Цельсія. Знавці обряду вва-жають, що в перших трьох віках цей празник святкували разом з празником Зіслання Свято-го Духа. Сильвія Аквітанська не називає цей празник Вознесенням, а тільки "сороковим днем після Пасхи".

У IV столітті празник Господнього Воз-несіння стає загально визнаним. Історик Со-крат († к. 440) називає його "всенародним праз-ником" (Історія Церкви, 7, 26).

Празник Вознесіння звеличили своїми проповідями святий Йоан Золотоустий, святий Григорій Ниський, святий Епіфаній Кипрсь-кий, Лев Великий й инші. У IV столітті цариця Єлена поставила храм в честь цього празника на місці Христового Вознесіння.

THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD

The feast of the Lord’s Ascension always falls

on a Thursday, on the fortieth day after Christ’s resurrection. This is one of the principal feast days of our Lord and therefore, has a post feast of nine days. It celebrates the memory of Christ’s Ascen-sion into heaven and underscores its significance for Christ and for us. St. John Chrysostom, in his homily on the Ascension says: “Today the human race is completely reconciled with God. The an-cient battle and enmity have disappeared. We, who were unworthy to live even on earth — are now lifted up to heaven. Today we become heirs to the kingdom of heaven, we, who do not even deserve earth, we ascend to heaven and inherit the throne of the King and Lord. Human nature, against which the cherubim guarded paradise, is now raised up above all the cherubim.’’

Sources of the first three centuries do not speak of this feast. Not even the writer Origen (f 251) mentions it, although he lists the Christian feasts in the eighth book of his work “Against Celsus’’. Liturgical experts are of the opinion that in combined with that of the feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost). Silvia Egeria does not call this feast the “Ascension”, but only “the fortieth day after the resurrection of Christ.”

In the fourth century the feast of the Lord’s Ascension became a universal feast, celebrated everywhere. The Historian Socrates (fc.440) calls it a “general feast”. (History of the Church, 7,26)

The feast of the Ascension was highly extolled in the sermons of St. John Chrysostom, St. Grego-ry of Nyssa, St. Epiphany of Cyprus, Leo the Great and others. In the fourth century, Queen Helena erected a church at the place of Christ’s Ascension in honor of this feast.

"Господь вознісся на небо, — співаємо в першій стихирі на великій вечірні Вознесення, — щоб зіслати Утішителя світові. Небо приготувало престол його, а хмари — вознесіння Його. Ангели дивуються, бачачи чоловіка понад собою. Отець чекає на Того, що Його від віків держить у своєму лоні. А Святий Дух каже всім ангелам Його: "Візьміть, князі, ворота ваші; всі народи плескайте руками, бо вийшов Христос там, де був перед тим".

ЖИТТЯ СВ. КОНСТAНТИН ТА ОЛЕНА ПАМ'ЯТЬ СВЯТКУЄМО 21 ТРАВНЯ

Цей великий і відомий правитель християн був сином Констанція Хлоруса (правителя найбільших західних частин Римської імперії) і блаженної Олени. Він народився в 272 році в (за даними деяких джерел) Найсса з Дарданії, міста на Геллеспонті. У 306 році, коли батько помер, його проголосили наступником престолу. У 312 році, дізнавшись, що Максентій і Максимін об'єднали сили проти нього, він рушив до Італії, де, перебуваючи на чолі своїх військ, побачив у небі після полудня, під сонцем, променистий стовп у вигляді перехрестя словами: "Цим ти переможеш". Наступної ночі наш Господь Ісус Христос явився йому уві сні і оголосив йому силу Хреста та його значення. at the glory of Christ (God and Man), who is now seated at the right hand of the Father. He ascended into heaven, in order to send us the Comforter — the Holy Spirit — and to “prepare a place for us,” (John 14,2) as he promised.

“The Lord ascended into heaven,” we sing in the first stichera of the Great Vespers service of the feast of the Ascension, “in order to send the Comforter to the world. Therefore, heaven prepared a throne for him and the clouds assisted him in his ascent. The angels wonder as they see a man more exalted than they. The Father receives into his bosom him, who is eternally with him. The Holy Spirit commands all his angels: “Lift up your gates’ lintels, O princes; all you nations clap your hands; for Christ has ascended whither He was before.”

THE LIVES OF STS. CONSTANTINE & HELENA CELEBRATED MAY 21ST

This great and renowned sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Ro-man empire), and of the blessed Helena. He was born in 272, in (according to some author-ities) Naissus of Dardania, a city on the Hel-lespont. In 306, when his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Ita-ly, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The fol-lowing night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately or-dered that a labarum be made (which is a ban-ner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of Octo-ber, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Li-cinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once

чином він став монархом над Заходом і Сходом. Під ним і через нього припинилися всі переслідування проти Церкви. Християнство перемогло і ідолопоклонство було повалено. У 325 році він зібрав Перший Вселенський собор у Нікеї, до якого сам особисто звернувся. У стародавньому місті Візантії він заклав основи нової столиці свого царства та урочисто відкрив її 11 травня 330 р., Назвавши його своїм іменем Константинопіль. Оскільки трон імператорського правління був переданий туди з Риму, він отримав назву Новий Рим, жителі його володінь називались римлянами, і це вважалося продовженням Римської імперії. and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he him-self personally addressed. In 324, in the an-cient city of Byzantium, he laid the founda-tions of the new capital of his realm, and sol-emnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Ro-mans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Ni-comedia, he requested to receive divine Bap-tism, according to Eusebius (The Life of Con-stantine. Book IV, 61-62), and also according to Socrates and Sozomen; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21 or 22, the day of Pentecost, having lived sixty-five years, of which he ruled for thirty-one years. His re-mains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apos-tles, which had been built by him (see Homily XXVI on Second Corinthians by Saint John Chrysostom).

As for his holy mother Helena, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After this, Saint Helena, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Saviour was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and many others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about eighty years of age, according to some in the year 330, according to others, in 336.
