Graham Jones explanation of the US electoral system on Tuesday evening was regarded with great interest from members. It is easy to see why some Americans don’t bother to vote in a country where it isn’t compulsory. In the USA, the Philippines and in Australia the media is currently focusing on the character of politicians and policies or lack thereof. Politics and politicians come and go. Page 3: of theclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000007970/en-au/files/... · 2016. 5. 17. · 17 May 2016 3 PP Greg Dux gave a Rotary Minute (or 3) about Rotary in Russia. Prior to the breakup

17 May 2016 3

PP Greg Dux gave a Rotary Minute (or 3) about Rotary in Russia. Prior to the breakup of USSR in 1991

several attempts had unsuccessfully been made to establish Rotary in the Communist Regime. In 1988

Swedish Rotarians met with the USSR Ambassador who gave support to the proposal, and RI President

Hugh Archer visited and outlined conditions such as freedom of speech at meetings, freedom of selecting

members, freedom of travel and visits, and the right to pay dues to RI. These revolutionary (excuse pun)

ideas were taken to the Deputy Foreign Minister who agreed to them. The first club was established in

Moscow followed by 10 more in regional capitals for a 2 year trial. In June 1990 the Moscow club was

chartered, and the USSR collapsed in December 1991. The trial was forgotten and Rotary continues today

and is growing.

President Lea Rickwood welcomed members and guest Alison, Steve Penfold’s partner. Lea attended

the District Conference at Murwillumbah over the past weekend, and was inspired by the quality of

speakers and the outstanding projects by clubs in our District. She encouraged members to get behind

incoming DG Michael Irving at next year’s event in Ballina. Our club received a membership award for

the launch of the Griffith Uni Satellite Club, which now makes Southport the largest Club in the District.

Leanda Cooper reported on arrangements for the Aunties and Uncles family day this coming Sunday,

and also advised that there were several submissions to hand for donations from the Carousel Fund.

Marion Jones advised that next week’s meeting will be a combined one with Broadbeach RC at their

“shed” at Ashmore. She mentioned the upcoming ROMAC Trivia Night at the GC Arts Centre on Friday,

May 27th

, and a Michael Irving arranged “Purple Pinkie Day” at the Robina Town Centre in early July

.

David Randall was seeking help with interviewing prospective awardees in the Youth programmes run

by the club.

Bill Connelly spoke about a fundraising evening on Friday August 26th

to raise money for DG Partner

Roz Irving’s nominated charity, the Fred Hollows Foundation. The event will be held at the Italo-

Australian Club at Clear Island Waters and will double as a farewell to our Rotary Friendship Exchange

visitors.

Allan Thompson invited members to attend a breakfast meeting of the Satellite Club on a Thursday at

7.30am.

After dinner Sergeant Allan Thompson conducted a quick fire session, the usual $2 donation to Polio

Plus, a generous donation from Murray Bertrand, Steve Penfold was pinged for putting the wrong fuel in

his car, Leanda Cooper was happy to pay considerably for not saying the words Cl---on or Tr—p in

relation to US Presidential candidates. Apparently stuck on what to do next, the Sergeant asked his

collectors to empty the tables of all the coins on them. Which they did, and that was that!

Heads and Tails winner David Randall. Raffle Tracy Narain.

Our speaker this evening was our own Graham Jones, who, having the benefit of several year’s

residence in the US, attempted to explain to us the complexities and idiosyncrasies of the American

electoral system. He was assisted by a Power Point presentation, which did make the going a little easier.

Rather than report every little twist and turn here I’m sure any member who seeks further knowledge on

the subject would be best served by contacting Graham direct. Suffice it to say, that the possibility of

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump going head to head is not one to relish.

Liz Hamilton gave a vote of thanks to Graham, and President Lea closed the meeting with an

uncommon rendition of the National Anthem, to appease this week’s Chairman.

Meeting concluded at 7.40pm

Aunties and Uncles, Gold Coast (A&U GC) (a non profit organisation) is a mentoring program for

working with vulnerable and socially isolated children between the ages of 1 – 11 yrs old. Mentors (aka

Aunties and Uncles) offer each child time, attention, care, stability, guidance and exposure to new

experiences and opportunities to empower them to reach their potential and establish their future.

The Carousel Committee received a request from Aunties and Uncles, Gold Coast to fund their annual

family activity day for the children, their mums and dads and siblings who are in the program, mentors

and staff. The committee felt that rather than just provide them funding it would be a good community

project for the club.

The Club members were presented with the idea and it was agreed that it would be a wonderful club

activity to host their Annual Family Picnic Day in conjunction with the staff at A&U. Details of the event

are as follows:

Date: 15 May 2016 (Sunday)

Location: MacIntosh Island

Attendees: 60-70 people

Time: 11:00am – 2pm

Children Age Group: 8 -12

Activities: games for the children and families Lunch: sausage sizzle, sandwiches, fruit and drinks

Guests bring their own chairs, drinks, hats and sunscreen

Club members are asked to arrive at the park at 9am to help set up.

Next Tuesday May 17, we will join Broadbeach Rotary for their meeting at their Hub which is at 32

Hinde Street in Southport/Ashmore.

The time is 6 for 6.30 pm and the cost is $20 per person. Drinks are at own cost.

Do come and enjoy fellowship with a neighbouring Rotary Club as we share what we are both

doing in our community.

If you didn't sign the sheet on Tuesday night, please let Marion know ASAP

Rotary District Conference in Murwillumbah May 6-8, 2016

The three Rotary Clubs in Murwillumbah organized an excellent District Conference over last

weekend with over 400 registrants. Among the guest speakers of the highest caliber were

Australian of the Year David Morrison and Young Australians of the Year, Nick and Lucas of

Orange Sky Laundry. Dr Danielle Stanisic presented her research into a vaccine for Malaria and a

young couple told of the hostel they have built in remote Nepal to enable local children to go to

school and the help they are giving to the local community to become more self supporting.

It was an honour to have Rotary President Nominee Ian Riseley and Juliet from Melbourne join

the conference. Juliet was District Governor in the same year as our own Graham Jones.

Southport Rotary took out the Award for the biggest membership increase in the District, thanks

to our Satellite Club.

Thanks to all who donated to the Silent Auction which raised $2835 so far, with our contribution

of over $300 much appreciated. The proceeds of the Silent Auction will support the District

Human Brain Research Project which provides a scholarship for a PhD student to work on Dr

Peter Silburn’s team which does deep brain stimulation for people suffering from Parkinson’s,

Tourette’s and other neurological disorders.

Make sure you put the dates for next year’s District Conference in Ballina in your diary-May 5-8.

We will look at making a group booking for this, our DGE Michael Irving’s Conference.

Thoughts for the week.

Trump: "It's not a toupee, I just found the Bush that Jeb lost."

How is Donald Trump going to create middle class jobs? By paying them to cheer for him during campaign events.

Why is Donald Trump always seen with Melania? Because all his other wives support Hilary.

Which 2 food groups make up Donald Trumps diet? Meat and Democrats

If minorities have the race card and women have the gender card, what do rednecks have? The Trump Card

What's the difference between Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan? If Trump gets Alzheimers his IQ will go up

Why shouldn't Republicans worry about losing in 2016? Apparently depression is covered by Obamacare

Why is Hillary getting ready for an 8 year term? Because her vision is 2020

Why should conservatives vote for Hillary? Because a woman's place is in the White House

Apparently Monica Lewinsky won’t be voting for Hillary Clinton this election

She says the last Clinton presidency left a bad taste in her mouth.
