Syllabus of Master of Arts (English)General Directions
1' The entire course of M.A. (Engrish) consists of 1g (eighteen) papers.semester I &II shall have four papers each (a total of g out of which fourshall be compulsory and four optional); Semester III & IV shall also havefour papers each (a total of l0 out of which two shall be compulsory andeight optional). one paper (paper XIII) shall be ailotted to dissertation-work' If a student does not want to undertake dissertation-work, he/she canopt for a paper named 'Resaerch Methods'. one more paper-.skillEnhancement/social ouffeach' (paper xvl[, sem IV) based, on practicartraining is to be obted in the second year. In case a student does not want totakethis paperbased on practical skins, he/she can opt for paper named'creative writing and soft Skills'. The details of these papers (xI[ &xvm) along with their corresponding alternatives appear later in t\edocument.
2. At the beginning of every session, each department wourd announce theoptions it wourd offer to students on the basis of available resources.3' There are two compulsory papers in Semester I, and correspondingly inSemester II, whereas in semester III& IV, there is onry one compulsorypaper each semester.
4. For the optionar papers, the students are advised to choose correspondingoptions across the semesters. For instance, anyone who opts .Academicwriting -I' in semester r, for sake of speciarization, is advised to opt for'Academic writing -II'. Similarry anyone who opts .curturar
Studies _I, insemester I, for the sake of specialization, is advised to opt for ,culturalStudies -II'.
5' All the books prescribed as well as suggested are available either online orin the printed form. The teachers are expected to teach onry those parts orexcerpts (ofthe texts) that have been prescribed in the course.6' Each paper shall be evaluated both internally and externally. out of a totalof 100 marks per paper, each candidate shalr be externafly evaluated for g0marks, and internally evaluated for 20. The internal assessment would begiven on the basis of attendance (5 marks), class participation (5 marks) andmid-term examination (10 marks). The papers lexcept paper XIII thatinvolves Dissertation-work & paper xvlll (which is based on practicalskills) across all the semesters have been divided into five units. In the finalexamination of each paper, five questions (one from each unit) would beasked with internal choice. Each question shail cany 16 marks with a wordlimit of about 500- 600words.

The Institute started in July 2007 asa collaborative effort of three departments of panjabUniversity viz. Department of Education, Department of Lifelong karning and Department ofCommunity Education & Disability Studies. Presently, four year integrated B.A. B.Ed. course(approved by NCTE) is offered in the Institute of Educational Technology & VocationalEducation with an intake of 50 students. This course is designed as per the latest guidelines ofNCTE.
The objective of the Institute is to prepare prospective secondary school teachers, who arededicated & committed to teaching profession, socially aware & concerned, morally upright andspiritually oriented. The focus of this four year course is to provide quality teacher educationthrough a rigorous, consistent and comprehensive programme equipping with theoreticalknowledge and practical pursuits.

'i1. B.A. B.Ed. is a Four Year IntegiJted Course comprising of eight semesters. Each
academic year is divided into two semesters:a) From July to Decemberb) From January to May
Minimum qualifications for admission to first semester of the course will be: 10+2Examination of any Board./University, which is recognized by the Panjab Universityas equivalent, to it with at least 50vo marla (45vo marks in case of sC/sr).
Every candidate admitted to the course shall pay such fee and firnds or other chargesas may be prescribed by the Syndicate/Senate from time to time.
A candidate admitted to the course shall be eligible to appear in a semesterexamination if he/she has attendod at least SOVo of the lectures required in prescribedcourse component during the semester and 90Vo for school internship. Provided thatthe deficiency in this attendance requirement may be condoned as follows:a) Up to l0Vo lecttxes in various special lectures/visits to schools or other
institutions by the Head/ Chairperson/ Director.b) The vice-chancellor, in exceptional cases, on the recommendation of the
Head/Chairperson/Director, may condone up to l0lectures to the best advantageof the student, beyond the condonation done by the Head/ Chairperson/Directorl
a) A paper of 100 marks will be equated with 5 credits.b) The total credits a student of B.A. B.Ed. Course will earn is 380. This also remains
minimum numbers of credits that a student of B,A. B.Ed. Course must clear to passthe Course.

6. To be declared pass in a semester examination, a candidate must have obtained atleast:a) 40Vo marks in each paper of the semester examination.b) 40Vo marks in the internal assessment/project reports/ term papers/ visits to
schools or other institutions etc for each paper. These marks shall be on suchbasis/ criteria as approved by the Syndicate/ Senate from time to time.

i) Promotion from 1"t tozfr,3'd to 4ft, 5ft to 6th,7fi to 8'h semester shall be allowedif a candidate has fulfilled the attendance and other requirements even thoughhe/she has failed/ has failed to appear in the examination for the semesterrespectively from which he is being promoted., with a reappear.
ii) Promotion from 2fr to 3'd,4'h to 5'h, and 6fi to 7'h semester shall be allowedonly if s/he-has passed at least 607o of the papers of the l't to Znd, 3d to 46,and 56 to 6ft, semester respectively as the caie may be.
iii) A candidate who gets reappear in paper(s) may pass the same in a total of twoconsecutive chances irrespective of promotion. However, if a student has cleared80Vo of the papers of all the semesters preceding the semester in which s/tre hasto be admitted, he will be entitled to avail one more chance to clear the remainingpapers on the recommend4tion of the Head/ Chairperson/ Director,iif thecandidate fails to clear the rernining papers even after availing all these (three inall) chances, he will seek fresh'admission in first semester provided he is eligibleto continue as per rules. (Ihls para was substituted by syndicate in its meetingheld on 24.9.2006, Agenda ltem- 7l ).
iv) All the papers of the 4 yeru course must be passed within 6 years from the date ofthe admission to the first semester of the course. However, the number ofchances to be availed per subject will be governed by University rules.
The medium of instruction shall be English only. However, examination
may be allowed in English, Hindi or Punjabi.
Candidates will be allowed to improve their performance in any paper. The number ofchance will be governed by the prevailing University rules.
The teaching learning processes willbe as follows:
a) In all the papers 60Vo academic transactions will be teacher directed by way oflectures, discussions and presentations by the teacher.
b) 207o marks will be allocated to internal assessment based on mid termexamination, classroom discussions, attendance, seminar and snap test.
c) The remaining2U%o will be covered in the form of Individualized sessional work(supervised by the concerned teachers) comprising project work, teampresentations, individual term papers, and assignment. In all papers exceptEnglish (Compulsory) and Punjabi (Compulsory)/HcP. In these papers, Ccomponent mentioned above is not there.

The students will be associated with one teacher, who will supervise individualprogress on school related practicum, improvement in life skills, sessional work of various
