Offensive Huddle

The huddle is a very important aspect of the game. Treat it as such. We are all business. When the center yells “huddle” get there and be quiet. The QB is the only player who talks while in huddle.

The center will call the Huddle 10 yards from the L.O.S.

QB – 1) Give Down and Distance

2) Repeat the play twice (once to each side of the huddle)

To break the huddle the QB will say “Ready”, and every player in the huddle yells out the word BREAK!

Starting CountIn the huddle our Quarterback will always call for the ball to be snapped on either “Set” on “1”, on “2”, or on “3”. The cadence is called the following way

Set 2 – 36 – – 2 – 36 – Hit – Hit – Hit

We go on the snap count that was called in the huddle.

36 – Dummy Call

Audible SystemOur Audible System is a very simple one. The snap count number will determine if the QB is changing the play at L.O.S. This means the snap count number called in the huddle is the Live Number. (Set is not included — we have to go with the play called in the huddle if we want to snap the ball on Set). The Live Number means we are changing the play called in the huddle to the play the quarterback is calling at the L.O.S.

Page 4: OFFENSIVE PLAYBOOK UTE CONFERENCE - · PDF fileOFFENSIVE PLAYBOOK UTE CONFERENCE. 1 ... I/Pro Spread Rt/Lt ... Reach Block the man on you, sealing him to the inside. FS

3

Example:

Play in the Huddle … Twins RT 46 ISO on 1

L.O.S. …Quarterback knows the play called will not work. He can check out of it in the following manner.

Set – 1 – 33 (QB will repeat the snap count that was given in the huddle)

1 is the Live Number. The play is being changed to 33 from 46. --- The snap count now is on (2)

Rule: All plays checked off at the L.O.S. will be on “2” Even when the play in the huddle is called on “2”.

**Note: When the snap count that was called in the huddle is repeated by the QB at the L.O.S., we are changing the play. The ball will then be snapped on 2.

OFFENSIVE NUMBERING SYSTEM

Our offensive gaps will be numbered from left to right 1 through 8. The offensive backfield will also be numbered in the following fashion. The quarterback will be number 1, the flanker number 2, the fullback number 3, and the tailback number 4.

When calling a play, the first number is that of the back who will carry the ball and the second number is the hole he will run through. (Below is an example of our numbering system.)

33/36 VEER

(Inside Veer)

INDIVIDUAL TECHNIQUES:

QB: Open to play-side with a 45° angle step back towards the fullback, reading the charge of the dive key read. If the dive key charges straight ahead or loops to the outside, give the football to the fullback. If the dive key slants inside, pull the ball andattack downhill towards your next read, which is the KEEP-PITCH KEY READ. If the Keep-Pitch keydoes not commit to you, cut up the field and run the ball.

FB: slash at the outside foot of the play-side guard. Run to daylight if the ball is handed off. If the ball is not handed off, fake dive action and help on the seal blocking of the crease to the inside.

TB: Sprint to the sideline thinking “pitch” and maintain proper pitch ratio with the B whether the QB is attacking downhill or cutting up field.

SE: Stalk block deep outside 1/3

FL: In Pro: Stalk block deep outside 1/3 – Twins: Stalk block pitch support

TE: Pro/Twins: Arc block pitch support

32/37 Veer

(Outside Veer)

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS:

QB: Open to play side, stepping parallel to the L.O.S. (Do not bow back into the backfield). You must make sure you stay on the L.O.S. to insure that the play hits as quickly as possible. Give the ball to the fullback, if the dive key read does not attack the QB/ fullback mesh point. If the dive key attacks the fullback, fake a handoff, skip around the collision, and attack up field. The keep-pitch is now made up-field on whichever secondary defender forces on the quarterback as the pitch back trails for the possible up-field pitch.

FB: The fullbacks’ initial step is identical to the dive path on the 33/36 (inside) Veer. On the second step, the fullback slashes for the outside foot of the play-side tackle. If the ball is handed off, run to daylight. If the ball is not handed off, fake the dive action and help on the seal blocking of the crease to the inside.

TB: Sprint to the sideline thinking “pitch” and maintain proper pitch ratio with the QB. Once the QB attacks up-field he must keep the pitch ratio because this is where the pitch most often takes place.

SE: Stalk block deep outside 1/3

FL: In Pro: Stalk block deep outside 1/3 – Twins: Stalk block pitch support

TE: In Pro/Twins: Base block down over to your inside. (You may be involved in a combo or double team block with the onside tackle.)

32/37 Lead Option

INDIVIDUAL TECHNIQUES:

QB: Open to play-side with a 45° angle step back towards the fullback. You should obtain more depth on this step than normal to draw you farther away from the line of scrimmage. There will be a quick fake to the fullback. You will delay one count to allow the tailback to get to the proper pitch ratio. Continue to attack downhill towards the keep-pitch read. If the keep-pitch read commits to you, pitch the ball. If the keep-pitch read does not commit, cut up-field and run the ball.

FB: Take the same first step that you would on the 32/37 (Outside) Veer action, then cut to the outside (towards the sideline), reading the pitch support defender. You are on an Arc route towards defender.

TB: Carry out normal inside Veer pitch-option assignments. Once the pitch is received however, stay on the fullback’s (arc blocker’s) outside hip to help set up the Arc block.

SE: Stalk block deep outside 1/3.

FL: Stalk block deep outside 1/3.

TE: Seal down inside on first linebacker. (You may need to help combo block with the tackle.)

41/48 TOSS SWEEP

INDIVIDUAL TECHNIQUES:

QB: Open to the play-side with the same 45° angle step used on the 33/36 Dive or inside Veer. As you step pitch the ball immediately to the tailback and then carry out your Veer option fake.

FB: Take the same first step that you would on the 33/36 Dive or inside veer. Then sharply cut laterally towards the sideline, bending up-field towards the second pitch support defender and block him.

TB: Sprint to sideline taking the immediate pitch, turn up-field looking to cut off the block of the fullback.

SE: Stalk block deep outside 1/3

FL: In Pro: Stalk block deep outside 1/3 – Twins: Crack back block to the inside on the first threat (most likely LB)

TE: In Pro/Twins: Reach Block the man on you, sealing him to the inside.

TB: Take two steps laterally towards the sideline, then cut up-field sharply into the 3/6 hole receiving a deep handoff from QB. The handoff should take place immediately after you cut up-field. Cut off fullbacks’ block. (In Pro-use crossover step technique)

SE: Stalk block deep outside 1/3

FL: In Pro: Stalk block deep outside 1/3 - Twins: Stalk block pitch support.
