When Vijayalakshmi Sivakumar, a resident of Mandaveli started making beaded and paper quilling jewellery 10 years ago, little did she know that it would turn into a successful business in the years to come.

Back then, the resi-dent of Ammani Ammal Street got curious to learn this art form after she came across some “poor quality beaded jewels sold at high rates”.

Says Vijayalakshmi, “I wanted to make good quality jewels for my daughter and family members.”

So she enrolled in a fancy jewellery-making class. Soon this craft became her hobby. And Vijayalakshmi began making simple chains and offered them to family members.

Impressed, her relatives encouraged her to continue making this type of fancy jewellery. Slowly, she dab-bled in different forms of the craft. The sales began to climb.

Now, she has over 50 regular customers from both India and abroad. “And I’m busy with orders through the year.”

So how did all this happen? Vijayalakshmi says word of mouth buzz and promo-

tion via ‘shopping groups’ on Facebook helped a great deal in boosting her business. “People prefer my jewels as they are of good quality and are priced at a reason-able rate, that is 50 % less than the market price.”

Says Vijayalakshmi, “Initially, I started with only beaded jewellery and on the request of customers, I learnt and made jewellery out of quilling paper, fabric, and silk thread. I always keep looking for new designs and incorporate them into my work.”

The watchman knocked on my door.“Corporation people are here. They want to see you.”There were three of them. All wearing masks. The woman

was taking down notes, the senior of the trio was shooting pictures on his cellphone and the third, a man in his 30s was working on a spare hand pump that we have near the motor room.

“Sir, please look at this water,” the woman said.It was muddy and stale, having remained in the underground

pipeline for months.“Look closely and you will see hundreds of larvae,” she said.I did and acknowledged her observation.

The trio, from the local zonal office of Chennai Corporation were going around my area educating residents on the need to nullify opportunities for mosquitoes to breed. The woman pointed to a few empty mud pots and depressions in the covers of the drain system in our premises where there seemed to be some life in the rainwater.

“There are larvae there,” she pointed out.I told them I appreciated their effort and would do all we

could to support the fight against mosquitoes. Earlier that morning, a new set of civic workers were seen

cleaning the streets and dumping waste in the new garbage bins. Yes, the new private agency contracted by Chennai Corporation to operate in many parts of the city had rolled out its operations after some delay.

Now, the promotionals of this agency said it would promote source segregation of waste. That is, ask residents to put their dry, wet and dangerous waste in three bins kept inside our bungalows or apartment campuses, to let the workers collect the waste from this segregation.

The agency’s staff are telling us that they will go door-to-door to encourage source segregation of waste. Now, it is up to us to make this system work. And this needs the co-operation of all residents - since ours is a city of apartments now.

My friend on the other side of the Adyar neighbourhood shared photos of red, green and blue bins placed near the gate of his bungalow. I assumed these bins were given by the agency. Later, I got to learn that residents have to provide for their own bins - which is not a costly buy really.

Chennai has earned a bad name. It has been listed as one of the dirtiest cities in India. That is true. It has been true for many years now. We fling our bags of waste at street corners, we dump mattresses, washroom sinks and old clothes in overflowing bins and we urinate around these bins.

Waste segregation is a simple effort. So is recycling. A dirty city does not go well with the image of frothing hot coffee and fragrant mallipoo.

If you are standing on what is called the ‘broken bridge’ on the Besant Nagar side of the area where the Adyar river flows into the sea or strolling on the sands at the far end of Srinivasapuram, beyond Pattinapakkam you may come across a few people fishing in the estu-ary and the river.

These are inland water fisherfolk at work. There are a few fisherfolk who look for fish in the river side and not in the sea. They look for particular species

of fish that thrive in this region. The past weeks, a few fisherfolk were

seen fishing in the Adyar estuary off Srinivasapuram. The men say that on some days the catch is good. They say some people prefer the fish breeding in these waters. Sadly, due to the bur-geoning habitation in Srinivasapauram where open land has been converted into shacks or huts, the mounting garbage is dumped on the estuary’s waterfront and this pollutes the waterbody.

Sri Anjaneya Temple in Alwarpet has re-opened fol-lowing the state’s guidelines that were announced in early September. It now allows devotees inside only after man-datory temperature checks and use of hand sanitisers.

The temple has also placed barricades to regulate the movement of people. Said a staff at this temple, “As per the government instructions, archanai is not carried out.

Water-harvesting systemhelps channel rainwaterinto temple tank

If there was a pleasing sight on Monday evening last when it rained steadily for over an hour then it was the sight of water gushing into the tank of Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore.

And this happened because of a recent civic project under-taken near the tank.

On Monday, even as the rain poured down amidst thunder rolls after 4 p.m. water was seen gushing out of at least 5 out-lets into the eastern side of the temple tank. It ran down the stone steps and slowly spread and settled on the tank bed.

Recently, Chennai Corporation undertook to relay East Tank Street, the street that runs between the tank and the western boundary of the temple, linking North and South Mada Streets.

Drainpipes were laid alongside the tank boundary, cham-bers were created and filters set in to trap waste which is car-ried by the water – built into this system were pipes created at about 5 places along the main drain which projected into the steps of the temple tank.

All this was done to channel the rainwater that fell on the street into the tank. And this is what happened on Sept. 28 evening.

The re-opened The Mylapore Club in Luz is witness-ing a lot of activity now.

The canteen reopened last week, with members al-lowed to have tiffin items inside the club. Some 75% of the items are back on the menu list.

The popular Sunday meals has also been introduced but for takeaways only – some 100-plus takeaways were recorded last Sunday. All the staffers at the canteen wear masks.

The popular gym here has also reopened after a gap of 6 months. Members have slowly started trickling in.

The Head of the sports committee of the Club, Sand-eep Srinivasan was seen joining others at his work out when we dropped in.

The shuttle court is easily the most used facility now since the reopening of the club for members. The morning slots have been packed over the last two weeks, says the marker of many decades, Muruganandam. Only in the evening, there are one or two slots available, he says.

At the tennis court too, members are back and have been practising regularly over the last fortnight.

A number of club members (former first division cricketers) provide one to one coaching for young boys and girls at the cricket nets housed within the Mylapore Club.

The coaching activity at the cricket is still on hold as many of the wards are non members and the club is still closed for non members.

Also the coaching provided by the Mylapore Club Academy has not reopened. For the moment, the Mylapore Club cricket team is looking to practice under the floodlights ahead of the upcoming ‘club cricket’ season.

The new agency con-tracted by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to collect and clear garbage in many zones of the city has started its work in one ward of Mylapore which falls under the GCC Adyar zone – ward 173. ( areas around R K Nagar and KVB Gardens colonies in R A Puram).

Operations began in Ad-yar zone on October 1 when the chief minister launched the new facility.

The same day, workers of the new agency were seen cleaning the streets in R. K. Nagar in south R. A. Puram. ( seen in the photo used here)

Urbaser Summet, the new agency has placed garbage bins at street corners, in some places two bins. It is using electric three-wheelers to transport waste locally.

Men and women have been equipped to clean the streets in each ward.

Workers of the agency are also asking res-idents in independent houses and apartment blocks to use three bins – preferably different coloured ones or red, blue and green ones,

asking residents to segregate waste in their premises; this will be cleared by the civic workers when they stop at every gate daily and transfer this into three-wheelers .

Source segregation is being promoted rightaway but on a voluntary basis. However, people continue to dump their waste into the large bins kept at street corners.

The agency says all of Mylapore which falls under Teynampet zone of GCC will see its operations unfold in the weeks ahead.

It was time to remember one of India’s great actors – late Sivaji Ganesan – on his birthday. His 93rd birth an-niversary fell today, October 1.

TN deputy minister O. Paneerselvam and his colleagues and supporters as well as Sivaji’s son, Ramkumar and grandson, actor Vikram Prabhu and their friends were at the Sivaji Ganesan memorial which has been built by the state on the banks of the Adyar river, north of the Thiru Vi Ka bridge.

The actor’s portrait, which was placed alongside the life-seize statue were decorated with flowers. ( This is the statue that was shifted here after it was first installed on the Marina beach road traffic junction - near Gandhi statue and QMC’s main gate.

Sadly, this memorial is hardly visited at other times of the year. There is nothing interesting to see or interact with inside the memorial for a visitor.

TN Slum Board offi-cials have made it clear to residents of the Board’s tenements in Vaniyampathi in R. A. Puram zone that they will have to move out to allow for the demolition of the old blocks and con-struction of new ones in the same campus. Some residents took the issue to court and have got relief - eviction cannot be carried out till legal issue is settled.

Earlier this week, the officials were on the campus to give a final call to resi-dents to pack up. A small group staged a protest saying they were economically affected due to the pandemic conditions and needed time to vacate.

But officials stood firm on the dead-line. The same day, workers used JCBs began to demolish illegally built struc-tures around the blocks.

The 13 blocks which house some 400-plus families will soon be demolished once people move out. The Board had

given residents notice to vacate as well as orders of allotment of new flats just when the virus broke out. Families were asked to move out by April end but were given more time.

One resident said that at least 50% of the residents have already vacated the

blocks and found resi-dence in and around Mylapore or moved to the suburbs. Now, the rest are desperately looking for rental accommodation.

“Rents for sin-gle bed places are about Rs.8000 in the Mylapore area and we have to look hard to get a place,” said one woman who claimed she was

born here.It is learnt that even those who lived

in illegally built shacks here have been given allotment letters for flats in the new blocks when they are ready but this claim could not be confirmed with the Board officials.

Slum Board asks Vaniyampathi tenements’ residents to move out, demolition work begins

Marriages in 12 hrs, thank you. The Mandavelipakkam experience.

Nowadays, when T. R. Prakash, the secretary of Kalyana Nagar Association at Mandavelipakkam gets a call from people wanting to fix a hall he manages here for a wedding, they tell him they want to hire it only for 12 hours.

Yes, they want to pay for half-day hiring and are clear about going through the wedding tradi-tionally, inside 12 hours.

The calls are not many now but people keen to per-form weddings here want to follow the pandemic regula-tions and play safe.

Says Prakash, “When we first opened our facility some weeks ago, we offered a concession of 50% on the rent but now we are back to our regular rates.”

This Association has two halls. The non a/c hall on the ground floor, has a kitchen and the rent is Rs. 30000 for 12 hours, from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The hall on the first floor does not have a kitchen but has air-conditioning and is rented out for Rs. 40000.

Both the halls have restrooms and a sufficient number of changing rooms too. Says Prakash, “Though initially we weren’t allowed to operate air conditioners, now we have been allowed to do so.“

He adds, “People who want to conduct marriages don’t seem to want to rent the halls for two or three days now.

They book the hall for 12 hours and when the muhurtham and lunch is done, they pack up and leave by 1 p.m. We have had four such marriages this past few weeks.”

People who want the hall for a few hours in the even-ing, after 4 p.m., will be given a concessional rate.

The association is located at 29, West Circular Road, Mandavelipakkam.

The office is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4.30 to 7 p.m., Mon – Sat. Call 24952997 or call A. Swaminathan, the manager, at 9840572056.
