We have an expanded VFL Competition and an expanded VAFA Competition with the new G and F Sections.it was a pity to see two forfeits in H Section . Let us hope next week bring better news . At least, the Head of

the River is over !At the Harry Trott Oval, last year's A and B Section Premiers clashed and Old Paradians emerged victorious

over Collegians by an astounding 77 points . The Lions were just 2 goals down at three-quarter time in whatwas a fast and furious game - but they couldn't stand the finish of Parade who kicked 11 goals in the last quarter.

The Lions missed Simon Williams, Stuart Hinchen, Greg and Keith Parsons, David Hoyle and Ian Roberts:For Paradians Frank Gleason was a very busy rover with 6 goals and half forwards G re g Powick and MichaelSkerrett proved a handful .

But remember, Collegians lost their first three games last year. However, thre's no doubt the Lions were upagainst a fine side in Old Paradians .

It was not a happy day for the other A Section Grand Finalist North Old Boys lost by 53 points to 1986 BSection Runners Up Old Xaverians. The star for the Xavs was big bad Steve Cu rtain who kicked 11 goals- 5 of them in the second quarter in which the Old Xavs kicked 10 goals to seal the game. Back from theVFL, half forward Vaughan Carlin, Dermot Dann (Mlbourne) & Mick Atkins (Footscray) were valuable play-ers for the Xavs . Greg Carro ll made a welcome return for North, but their best was half forward Paul Booth .

University Blues were outclassed by 25 oints at Ormond . The Blues made their score respectable with a6 goal last quarter but they were blitzed by Ormond in the 2nd quarter. Newcomer Paul Nanke rvis imprssedon the wing for Ormond.

Old Scotch defeated Caulfield Grammarians by 28 points at Albert Park . Scotch always seemed to havethe edge - their skills wer better especially their handba!l and kicking to position . Dar re n Campbell kicked5 goals for the Cardinals .

De La Salle scored a 34 point win over BulleenTemplestowe on the revamped Ted Ajani Reserve . De Lahad a 9 goal third quarter which set up their victory and Colin Lowe kicked 8 goals from fu!l forward .

Here are my tips for this week .A SECTION: B SECTIONOld Scotch v ORMOND Ivanhoe v PARKSIDEUniv. Blues v BULLEEN-TEMP (Elsternwick) St . Bernards v THERRYNORTH O .B. v Caulfield Grammarians St . Peter French PreviewsRound Two

Cricket conditions prevailed on the opening day of the 96th season of Amateur Football which commencedlast Saturday, and no doubt quite a number of games were won, in the end, by teams which had put in a hardpre-season .

I said last week that I'd be happy with 12 winners and missed that target by just one . How did you go? Whilston last weeks efforts congratulations to Paul Considine who has been appointed Captain of No rth O.B . for1987. 1 mentioned that Paul had not yet decided on his future as he had spent much of the pre-season at WindyHill . I'm sure North are as pleased with "Conno's" decision to return as he is with the Captaincy .

I also reported that Elsternwick's Bean would turn our for Ormond, which is incorrect, as he has decidedto remain with the 'wicks and help them into C Section .

In the first official outing at headquarters for the season two of last week's losers, Bulleen Temp . & Uni . Bluesmet in an important match for both clubs. The bullants were imprssive in the first half last Saturday but paidthe penalty for a loss of concentration in the third term when De La rattled on five quick goals . Blues beganwell at Ormond but lacked forwards, taking a quarter and a half to worry the goal umpires . The bullants willbe suited to Elsternwick Park where Farley, young Heath, Bell, Smythe & Farchione who made an impres-sive debut, will have plenty of space to show out . The bullants biggest danger will come from Blues ruckmanMike Tandell who will be too tall for the dogged Harisiou and give the likes of Allen Gust & the MacauleyBrothers first use of the ball . The combine will need to watch Curnow & Wallis and if these two can be nullifiedI think the younger and more enthusiastic Bullants can break the ice for a win .

Undoubtedly the match of the day will be played at Bundoora between 1986 B section Grand Finalists OldParadians & Old Xaverians both of whom recorded impressive opening wins . Xavs will face the game withplenty of confidence . They have recruited well and last week boasted 13 players with VFL experience . With the

likes of Richard Armst rong due to return soon and Nick Bourke Reserves only at present, there's obviouslyplenty of depth . However despite Old Xavs impressive line up its hard to go past Parade. Their final quarter

against Collegians was quite outstanding and coach Gerard Sholly will have drummed into his side the sig-nificance of a home victory. I'm tipping O.P's as they're playing at home, and have Exton, McCann and eitherSpillane or Matt Considine more than capable of holding the most talented half forward line .in 'A' Section

- Dann, Greetham & Carlin .In the other games, I'm going for Scotch at home against Ormond who have struggled at Batman Avenue

in years past, for De la to hold out Collegians and for a third home team, North to open its account at theexpense of Caulfield Grammarians .

In B Section Fawkner & Old Trinity meet at Fawkner in the mtch of the round . Fawkner outlasted the Blackslast week to get home by just 4 points in a high scoring game and despite Old Trinity's splendid first up effortagainst St. Kilda . I'm afraid they'll find Fawkner a much tougher nut to crack. . I wonder who'll be given thebig job of tagging Fawkner dynamo Terry Young (6 goals last Sat . )

Blacks should open its account against Banyule & Marcellin will make i two out of two by downing the Saints.Therry will be another away winner against St . Bernards as will Parkside at Ivanhoe.

Looking now at C Section its Old Brighton over Hampton Rovers in the local derby and Thomastown tobeat AJAX at Albert Park . Monash Blues will be well tested by Old Haileybury who will relish the return ofCaptain/Coach Wayne Shand and the rugged Roger Paul . However the "Ashes" are geared up for a big yearand at home will win . Kew had a mammoth win last week and will brush the High School aside to remain ontop of the, ladder and I'm afraid Balaclava will be way out of its depth for its inaugural game at the Cordneroval . I've been told by a few stock exchange friends that O.M .'s are "odds on" for promotion . To my mind there'sa lot of water to flow under the bridge yet but at this stage of the season a Balaclava victory over Old Melburni-ans is only a pipe dream . North Brunswick showed obvious signs of consolidation since 1986 when they outplayed relegated Old Cam-berwell . Old Ivanhoe started season 1987 on a high note when they defeated Heathe rton by over nine goals. The other relegated side St. Kevin's had too much skill for Bulleen United whose uncanny accuracy madetheir score much more respectable. Promoted Elsternwick outplayed Coburg on the wide wings of ElsternwickPark .Section EI forecast a Brunswick victory but I did not anticipate they would have over 100 points to spare over Clayton .Old Geelong showd good early form to inflict a fifteen point defeat on University High School Old Boys.St . Bede's signalled they wil be a force by easily accounting for Peninsula Old Boys . Inaccuracy by Old Es-sendon resulted in them defeating Power House by only ten points despite having fifteen more scoring shots .State Bank found West Brunswick not too formidable an opponent as the Tigers were ten goals ahead ofthe Magpies at the final siren .F Sectio nNewcomer Aquinas showed they will be a force in F Section by inflicting a ten goal defeat on St. And rewswho first missed the 1986 finals. Another potential finalist Whitefriars opened the season with a convincingvictory over newly promoted Old Carey. LaTrobe University, who could be a force, started with a victory overFootscray Institute. A .N .Z . Bank proved no match for St . Leonards and finished over one hundred pointsin deficit . On Sunday Doveton proved too strong for University Reds who may need some time to developtheir game .Section GMy forecasts and the results were poles apart as I am obviously neither Solomon nor Peter French . De La Salle'svictory over St . Bernards was a coprrect prediction as was Monash Wites victory over G .T.V.9. Other winnerswere Bloods (very convincingly), Kew, Old Scotch and Po rt Colts .Section HThis section saw my predictions become reality . However with all due modesty two of them were by forfeit whichmust be of concern to the clubs involved . Congratulations to St . Kilda and Eltham on their initial victories andto Power House and Therry who played the only draw of the round .Under 19 Section 1University Blues made my prediction ridiculous because they easily defeated De La Salle by over one hundredpoints. On the other hand Marcellin, Old Xaverians & Old Paradians (G re en) all vindicated my faith in themwhen they accounted for M .H .S.O.B ., North Old Boys & Collegians respectively. The closest match of theround was played between Bulleen Templestowe & Ormond before the combined emerged winners by six-teen points .Under 19 Section 2St . Bernards & Old Brighton proved too talented for Old Melburnians and Thomastown respectively. AsI predicted Ther ry & Old Haileyvu ry had little difficulty accounting for University Blacks & Banyule in theirrespective games.Under 19 Section 3Whitefriars made an auspicious debut with a big victory over Monash Blues while Caulfield Grammariansproved too strong for Ivanhoe after a high standard game. Williamstown proved too strong for Fawkner whosebest form should be ahead of them . In the other game a depleted Old Paradians Purple gave their best buthad to lower their colours to a well disciplined Hampton Rovers .

PREDICTIONS FOR ROUND 2 - 11 .4.87.

A plea to all home sides today, please phone the scores to Anne Halley as there are so many of us who liketo hear your results.D SectionTwo of last week's winners Old Ivanhoe & No rth Brunswick meet at Chelsworth Park . At home I favour OldIvanhoe . Old Camberwell await Elstemwick and on last week's form I must pick the 'Wick . St . Kevin's bouyant

after their big win at Bulleen should add Heatherton to their list of conquests. An interesting game should be

that between P reston & Bulleen United . Preston at home should be able to take the points . Coburg who

are always difficult to defeat on the De Chene Reserve play Old Mentonians who suffered defeat on the ground

in Round 17 last season which dented their run to the finals. I have no evidence to suggest that Old Mentoni-

ans can win today.E SectionBrunswick visit Old Geelong and should be able to leave Como Park victorious . Clayton play West Brun-

swick in what could be an even contest as evidence so far indicates neither club will be strong in 1987 . At home

Clayton should be able to win . University High School Old Boys make the long trip to Mount Eliza o play

Peninsula . Both sides will be desperate for victory and my inclination is to Peninsula. Powerhouse at home

will find St. Bedes too strong judged on last week's form . Today I will stay with St. Bedes . Old Essendon

visit State Bank . Although they are a good side Old Essendon will not be strong enough to defeat the Bankers

on Oval 4. The Bankers rally do have an enviable record on this ground !

F Sectio nWhither goest A .N .Z. Bank? After their dismal showing last Saturday I have no alternative but to select St . An-

d rews to win . Another bank side Commonwealth Bank on the spacious Harry Trott Oval should be able to

defeat University Reds while I predict the other university side LaTrobe to go down to Aquinas who made

such a promising debut last week. Doveton at home should prove too talented for Old Ca rey. In the battle

of the western suburban sides Williamstown C.Y.M .S. should prove too strong for Footscray Institute . St.

Leonards will visit Whitefriars with confidence which I expect will be misplaced as I believe Whitefriars will

win the game.G Sectio nToday I believe the five winners will be Marcellin, St . Bernards, Bloods, Po rt Colts and De La Salle .

H Sectio nAs with G section form is not too well known, at least to this tipster - Nevertheless, I select Eltham, Power

House, Old Xaverians, Therry, Richmond Central & Parkside, to win today.

Under 19 Section 1At home Melbourne High School should be talented enough to defeat De La Salle. University Blues must

be favoured to defeat Bulleen Templestowe although the Bullants should provide spirited opposition . North

Old Boys do not appear to be as strong as in previous seasons and consequently I tip Marcellin to defeat

them today. The main game today could well be than between Old Paradians G reen and Old Xaverians at

Bundoora . The Old Paradians will ve built up with the unfurling of their 1986 Section 3 flag and will be outto inflict defeat on the Red and Bicks who won so well last week . At Bundoora the home ground advantage

is an asset and I select the Old Paradians. Ormond & Collegians will both be anxious to win to keep in touch

with th section leaders - At home I believe Ormond will emerge victorious.

Under 19 Section 2Old Scotch should take the points against Old Melburnians as should St . Bernards against Old Haileybu ry.

Thomastown at home to C.B.C. St. Kilda could open their season's account with the four points while Therryshould score another convincing win this week against Old Brighton. Banyule & University Blacks should

stage an interesting and even tussle before victory goes to Banyule .

Under 19 Section 3Monash Blues & Old Paradians Purple should provide an even game. At Monash the Blues must be favoured

although given a fully fit side the Paradians could take the points . Caulfield Grammar with a convincing victory

last week should be, able to defeat Williamstown C.Y.M .S . especially on Oval 3 . Fawkner still team building

will find Ivanhoe too strong today. The 'Hoes have a nice blend of tall and small players and as the seasonprogresses should prove tough opposition . Hampton Rovers will prove too talented for Whitefriars who visit

Hampton today .

Tragedy strikes Parkside Footballer. The Club is sad-dened to announce that Steve "Moose" Wilson, age 34, Player/Life Member at Parkside, suffered amassive brain haemorrage/stroke on Saturday. Congratulations to Craig 'Knob' Robson on final-ly playing his 100th game for S .K .O.B. in the firstround of the 1987 season . Knob started with the Clubin 1978, and whilst establishing himself as the bestruckman in the competition, he decided to return tothe country to assist in the family 'tombstone' busi-ness (other clubs watch out) .

Fortunately for the Club he returned to SKOB to berunner up in the B & F on countless occasions andState Rep in 1984 . Whilst pre-season isn't his forte, all at the Club hope that Knob's legs can stand upto another season or two. Congratulations Knob.

Question : Who is the axeman?Brian Goodma n

Personality ParsThree Brunswick players lined up this week for

their 50th game. John McLean and John Russ ac-tually took the field and served out their 50th whileShane Gibson was denied his 50 game performanceowing to the forfeit given by the opposition . Thesethree young players have been excellent contributorsand clubmen for Brunswick and we all congratulatethem on their achievements. Steve, our best andfairest winner last years and John our first sone ofa previous playing father (Barry) to regularly take thefield provide great prospects for our future, as doesSahen who, through no fault of his own, will need towait a week to actually perform in his big 50 games.Well done boys!

***All at Elsternwick congratulate Dave Mahoney on

playing his 250th game for the Club today . Dave hasplayed most of his football either at full-forward or full-back . He has one of the safest pair of hands and onhis day can be a match winner . Dave was the Club'sLeading Goalkicker in 1985 . All who have played withDave know that he doesn't say that much on the field- He just goes about his job. Congratulations Daveand al the best for another season with the 'Wicks .

***ANDY FIRMAN MOVES WEST

The Commonwealth Bank Football Club will belosing a great clubman today. Andy has acceptedan executive position in Perth and the Club will cer-tainly miss him .

A tough competitor, whether in defence or attack .

Also he will be lost to our committee, which he waselected to this year.

The Club wishes both Andy and his wife Sandy allthe best in the future and we hope to see you backsometime. Good luck Andy!

Profile on Ray SneddonVAFA Marketing Consultant

Last November, the VAFA Executive decided it was time to appoint a Consultant to 'market' Amateur Footballinto the 1990's .

Ray Sneddon, who runs a Sports Marketing Company, The Sports Connection, was appointed and commencedwork immediately.

Ray brings to the VAFA years of experience dealing with the media, arranging sponsorships, fund raisingprogrammes and the many contacts needed in the business and government sectors to enable marketingprogrammes to be developed and implemented .

Ray's interest in marketing commenced way back in the early 60's, when he was National Advertising Managerfor a white goods company Draff in Everhot . From there he worked for a leading international advertising agencyfor nearly 10 years, where he was supervising major acounts such as AMI (foyota), ACI, Philips, Cl and the TAB .

From there a quick stint with a Sports Marketing Company before establishing his own company 'The SportsConnection', which over the years has been involved in major tennis programmes, such as co-ordinating allthe Toyota Classics, 1980 Toyota Australian Open, NSW Open for Robinsons Lemon Barley, major Fun Runs- Budget Team Trots and America's Cup Challenge marketing for New Zealand .

He currently works with the Australian Wool Corporation on a major marketing initiative, Bay Play, and marketsthe game of women's cricket for the Australian Women's Cricket Council . He also carried out guest lecturingfor Phillip Institute, Department of Sport and Recreation and The Australian Sports Commission .

Already Ray's contribution to the VAFA has been significant as many sponsorships have been arranged forthis season with many extending into the 1989 season .

A 'hands on' person, Ray has also been active with all 68 Clubs in assisting them where possible with theirClub sponsorship, fund raising and merchandising programmes .

For somebody to be involved in sports marketing you would assume a sporting background as well as a mar-keting background would be a pre-requisite.

Well Ray (or as his sporting mates call him 'Tuppence'), has played over 130 games with Old Scotch, from1959 - 1970, and during that time was on Committee, captain/coach Reserves 1966/67 (Premiership), won theVAFA 'A' Reserver Section Best and Fairest in 1966 .

His summer activity has always been cricket, having played for Melbourne Cricket Club 1957 - 1970, Toom-bul 1 1971, Richmond Cricket Club 1972-75 and captain/coach Camberwell1976/77 . He represented Victoriain the early 60's in the Colts and a Victorian XI . He currently sits on the Richmond Cricket Club Board and also, when he has time, coaches the Camberwell Women's Cricket Team .

His other intersts include outdoor activities - walking is the latest with his wife Marilyn and two boys Toby andBarnaby.

We welcome Ray to the VAFA Team .

THE SCORE ON THE SCORESSome clubs, particularly in the higher sections,

seem to think they have the right to ring the PressCorrespondent early on Saturday evening for scoresin other matches in the section .

Our phone is far too busy from 4 .45 p.m . till 9 p.m .to be able to give these cores - very often we ha-ven't even got them - and any request will in futurebe turned down .

There are several ways of obtaining scores of othergames in your section - from Radio Stations 3DB,3AW and 3LO, or by phoning the other grounds .

***The Old Xaverians Football Club would like to re-

mind its supporters and all clubs which visit Yarra Parkthat car parking is very limited this season .

The construction of the new Tennis Centre andremoval of the Old Scotch Oval have increased theparking problem .

In some cases supporters will need to use MCCparking areas for the normal fee . As all will realize thisis beyond our control. Sorry.
