The Government clearly endorses the Waterway Trust and its parallel function with British Waterways but under its mvn board of trustees.

EBLEY INFILL British Waterways have now taken ovw the "drive" for the technical part of the project - to pursue and carry out the contract to e m a t e the infill . working from Ryeford Double Lock eastwards towards Bridge Road. However, with BW the Trust has still had to address the issues of finally obtaining approval for the grant - which has been conditional until this stage, and obtaining planning consent to deposit the dredgings on the old tip site, adjacent to the canal at Ebley. AI the time of going to press, we have just heard that the grant application has not been approved, which is a setback after all the hard work put in to meet the stated requirements

WALLBRIDGE DEVELOPMENTS At a meeting of elected representatives on June 1st. it was agreed that the combined project of roadworks and bridge would be deferred for a year, while the funding for the bridge is pursued vigorously. Work towards this aim has already started with thw development of a funding promotional pack which can be used by all parties concerned with the achievement of this project.

OCEAN BRIDGE, STONEHOUSE At the end of May the Trust submitted bids to the IWA for two available awards, each of £100,000, arising from bequests made to them for use in restoration works. Recently the IWA notified the Trust that a bid for the Ocean Accommodation Bridge has been placed on the national short-list of eight; we hope we shall be successful when final

Report by N&l Ritchie

The blggest event of its kmd in the South West A few staustics: Junctlon Bridge was swung 320 tlmes over the weekend, Over 5000 people vlsrted the event. We had U7 boats moored up. Over 250 people took a boat trlp Over 40 new members signed up

Ever since September 1999, this event has been in its panmng stages. Several ground rules were lad down at an early stage, taking on board the comments after the 1999 Boat Gather%. More trade stands, more boats, more music, more parkmg. =chard Watts of Saul Fannkmdly agreed to give us the use of a field for parklng, which freed up the Saul Junct~on car park for the traders arena. Deliberate efforts were made to attract coastal craft to the event - but we cadt take credit for the two 70' navy patrol boats passing through! This was just a bonus on the Fr~day and Sunday afternoons

Our main band performing on Saturday evening was "Little Jnhmy England", a folk rock set-up well known at Cropredy Folk Festival, Warwick Folk Festival and many other venues. They would have been well outside our scope had it not been for the generous sponsorship of Kceh Harns, who not only pad the fee, but enierrained the band lavishly on his boat &U/ nader, conveniently moored in the dry dock of RW Davs.

We were pleased to have return vlslts from the Caldon Canal Stompers (trad jazz) the Mainstreamers (mainstream jazz), the Bsgel Flsh Orchestra (eclectic mlx of traditional y~ddish, Transylvanian and contemporary folk) and Frampton Folk Club.

Ail this top entertainment was completely free to all our visitors. Our only real source of Income was therefore the car park At £5 per vehicle, those that arrived on thew own thought it was expensive. Those that arrrved m mini-buses thought it was encellent value for money! We will look at this charge again next year and try to make it a bit more equitable.

Advancs publicity was provided by our friends from Narrow Boat Trust. The working pan Brlgbron and Nmeaton loaded with real ale at Hanbury Wbarf, Droitwich m Tuesday 27 June def~vering to riverside pubs en route to Sad, cr6ating great interest from radio and p m pximalists -exactly as planned

Take up of lrsde stands was initially slow, hut the last two weeks became frenetic The craft marque was p h ~ e d to be the centrepiece, taking up a central position in the car purk. The other traders were then supposed to form a convex seml cude fac~ng out wwards the water, wifb the catermg at one end and the chddren's farrground at the other end Too many nonissential vehicles clogged vital parts of the site and we ended up with fairgrwnd rides going in the wrong place. causing a diwraction to the craft tent entrance Our lsmm has been learned

A signtficant number of questmnnaues came back with the comments that people wanted "more of the same" or "mose traders': The bulk of them exprwed sentiments along the lines of -a great day out". We must have got quite alot of thmgs rigbt.

On the Friday and Saturday, boats %re arriving frem both dirwtions, and the moorings eventually stretehed from SaatWMd Bridge right up to tlle winding hole near Parkend Bridge. The biggest vessel was AmbuIent at DO' long, the smallest probaMy the rowing M brought by Alan Churchward of the Envuonment Agency. It was pod to see the steam pinnace Jancf being tabn oul for a breath of fresh air. skippered by John Nash and crewed by Btrond Sea Cadets

A few interesting jobs that cropped up included the building of an access "bndgc ' from the pedestrian access path through the field up to the approach r o d This m a work of art m sca£fdd poles and went unnotked by most using it- a credd to W e that built it. Had it been whbly and w e n , everyone would have panted it out. U g e n lights fined to the tower crane gave illumination outside the entertainment tent Thank you Dudley, for sormg these out. I know 1 d d n ' r have climbed even half way up there. The power supply was provided ky Sammy, the IWA generator u i t . 2000 Beer Run I By Nick Haynes

Follow~ng the successful "Long Haul" last year, l jumped at the chance of an easy bu of boat~ng deliverlug beer to pubs on the way to Saul Junction. Having jouied the Cotswold CanalsTrust last year t h ~ s was m first jointly plannad trip as a member of hotx the Narrow Boat Trust & CCT

Initially the idea was to take dehvery of the beer. from Canon Royal Brewery of Droitwich, at Hanbury Wharf. on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. Loading would lake place on Monday 26th June and we would reach Saul on Friday 30th m time for the Saul 2000 event thereby helping to generate some publicity. Having looked at the schedule it would only he three days boatlng at the most so Neil Ritchie and the brewery agreed to change the plck-up day to Tuesday. That bit of the trip sorted I now bad to fmd

out how the boats were getting from our home base at Blakes Lock Museum Reading to wherever 1 was going to faLe over, expected to be somewhere near my home at Wanvick

Another hiccnp was that the crew had planned to get the boats to the bottom of Tardebigge locks by Saturday morning. A quick b ~ t of negotiation and a slow rrip for them and it was agreed they would be somewhere near Warwick on the Saturday. UnusUalIy for Nmeatm and Brigitfan this meant a scheduled two weeks of late starts and early finishes. In the meantune I had organised my crew. Dave Ray and Lou Kellett, both on the Long Haul with me. agreed to join on Saturday and my youngest daughter Marie was joining on the Sunday evening.

With everything planned 1 recaved a phone call on Friday 25th to say the boats were just below Lapworth Locks on the Grand Union A leisurely start and we set off to get the boats up Lapworth, at 1341, with a smp at the Wharf h Hockby Heath for dinner. My fist day plan didn't allow for the fact of a new crew of only three and two hoats. Needless to say, we arr~ved at the pub at ZPOJ,

five minutes after they stopped serving f w d Day three and Dave and mys@ walked up to It had taken us seven hours as opposed to the butty in time for our ~ w k e d breakfast and about four on the Lonlr Haul. How 1 nussed rhen off bow-hauline the buuv at 9:40. Just as - my bow-haulers.

Day two started mucb easier with a six hwr cruise to the top c!f Tardeb~gge. Asr~ving at L500, could we ge4 both boats down by the end of the day? No way, especially as we m e waiting for a publicity opportunity. an interview on BBC Radlo Gloucestershire. Not qulte knowing what to expect we waited at the top of Tardebigge far a radio van to arrive. L&u wrong can y w he? We were just about to give up and set off d l540 when my mobile rang. "You'll be on air m a few mluutes can you ban onT" 1 took the opportunity to mention %oth the NBT and CCT.

With still only three of us we decided to take the motor down to the bottom, only 30 locks, and leave the buny until the Monday morning, when we'd have a crew of four Having su~cessfully negotiated to the bottom for 1995, Mate and the rest of my family joined us for lfinner at the Queen's Head. it still wasn't open when we arrived. One problem was the girk had to walk back up te tbe top tosleep m the Butty, -ash!

we were arriving at ?he first iock, a hire born with a driver (whose first language wasn't English) set off in hi8 boat and to& all the locks that Dave and I had set on our walk up Never mind, it was a lavely morning and we were in no hurry. We %re at the bottom of the locks in three and a half hours, much better than Lapworth. With the six at Stoke and SAX at Astwood, we eventually arrived at Hxnbury at 18:04. C h e c k i with the pub, they ware happy that weloaded the beer £mm their car park.

Day four saw us waiting for the beer. Neil arrived with some hessian sacking, to cover the barrels and to keep wetted to cool the beer. We were loaded and away at i t 3 5 The 12 barrels looked lost in Nune~rrm's hold but we had the crew's pin of Arxowhead beer set up and tapped on the butty. We planned to stop in Diglis Basin that night after an easy day but as w~th most trips on canaIs not used to working boats things don't always go to plan. Everything was fine until we arrived in Wqrcester At lock 7 (what a pmuresquk name) d took us about L? W t e g to convince

a f m d y of cygw*s that clmy didn't want to travel dwrn with the butty. Fortunately the parents were W w the lock suing rather agitated. We had more fun at lock 6 when the motor wmt in but wouldn*t Come out. The shape of the neck of the lock wouldn't ali& us to move out. After an hour of pulling and pushrng a phone call to BW resulted in the advice of dropping the lower pound by ten inches. This was rather annoying when we'd already tried that ploy but only taken off three inches It worked a treaL but thsn waiting lo let the backlog of boats thmugh ahead of the butty it wasn't for a further hour befora both boats were through lock 5,

We finally arrived at Diglis Basin at 21fl0. A local Chinese take-away provided supper and the Arrowhead had cleared for a tastet of a putt or two.

Day five saw us on to the Sevm and getting the beer delwery underway. No more bow haultng, lack wheeling or swing-bridge swinging. With a following flow we wen now travelling at about five miles per hour, speeding for a pair of narrow boats. It was typical that we arrived at the first lock after Worcester, at 13:05 and the lock keeper has his lunch 1255 to 1330 Still we managed to arrive with our first delivery at the Lower Lode Inn during opening tme. We did wonder what we had let ourselves in for, with a 45 degree ramp and riverside to match but using a bit of ingenuity wltha sack truck and ball of stnng we managed to deliver the fiisr two ba rds without any problems. Cash on dellvery but no free beer and off we set.

We arr~ved at our second pub and overnight stop, Tde Boar at Ashlewo~th, at 1600. A rather amusing comment was made by the landlady when she saw Lou pick up a bar~el "Do you want me to get a man to help with

PREPARING RYEFORD Richard Attwood confirms that access has now been cleared along the bed of the canal between Oil Mills Bridge and meford Double Lock A small group of volunteers set to on Sunday 7th May and achieved a through route in readiness for the imminent start by contractors on the rebuilding of Ryeford top wing walls. Timing is critical on this task, as we anticipate an August start to the dredging and infill clearance upstream of Ryeford. We meet from about frve thirty every Wednesday evemng, and generally work until dusk, when we pack up and retire for refreshment and conviviality to a local hostelry.

We usu!il$ go to either the &m at Cemey Wick or the newly refurbished Horse asd Groom on the old road to Cirencester. For many of us, these work parties are the highlight of our week, and combine a lot of fun with a great sense of ackvement. There is easy parking in fmnt of the Icformation Centre on Spine Road

There is a meal deal of scrub clearance needed m the bed of the canal. as well as on the tow path, which 16 being progressively improved and realigned It is important to dear as far along the canal as we can by early September, when we shall bring m contractors to re-profile the hed of the c a d

Huddersfield Expedition

As a member qf the Trust for some years I have followed (and occasionally participated in!) the restoration cffort This has led me to an mterest in same of the o tha large scale canal restoratlens in the country and paiticulsirly that of the Huddersfield Narrow canal.

W&%ite http:liwww.penninewacerways.~o.uk ran excellent site) inspired me to dig out my boats m see the real thing and so over the flrd weekend of July my partner, Darylle and I walked the whole canal iength from Ashton unda Lyne to Huddersfteld.

la many ways the Hudd@rsCieldNarmw Canal can he compared to the Cotswold Canals. in that they are of a suoilar length and are both bisected by a substantial canal tunnel. The majos difference ts that the northern canal rum through urban areas such as HuddersfieId m the &l and Stalybridge in the west. Them is, however, a whole lot of gloriouf countrys~de to kmk at, particularly amund Siiddleworth, reminiscent of the Cotswolds in many ways.

The other big difference is that the Huddersfiald Canal is nearing the end of its restoration from a state of dereliction at least as bad as the Cotswold Canals, and perhaps worse in placm It is due ns reopen along its f u n h g t h m the Iete spring of next year.

What was my main impression of the walk? The a s t o n a h ~ q amount of effort which has heen necessary to put the canal back through towns where II had heen buried under roads and E?clorres for the past fifty years. Ld Sfalybridge the canal travels t h u g h the mlddle of town

I t n quite lncled~ble ta see the work that has one into clearing the way, installing oew f ocks and making gwd old bridges. It makes

the obstacles impeding the Cotswold Canals restoration look insignificanl by cmnparison! Similar large scale civil engineerkg has slso been necessary in Huddersfield and Slaithwaita.

In many places new locks have k e n built to change the levels to meet the need to negotiate, for instanae, a new road Here thg locks are stnctly utilitarian - lots of oonueto, but when they are full d water and rnah their finishing touehes they are almost as good as the origiaal%tone.

All bridges whether they were o~igb~ally swing b1hIge.s or sot, are be& repI.wcd with permanent fixed structms with sufficient headroom for boats. Probably a wise move in these days d masses of road traffic.

There is, as you would expect, a fair amaunt of dredging work m progress, and as 1 passed 1 picked up a souvemr of my walk -a pieee of coal, a token of wtren the canal was bst used for its mtended wmmemialpur ose When I oame home and asw my & what it was, it took them some time to guess - how times change1

E anybody would like furFher && of thLF walk, places to *ay ere, p iwe feel free to conract me, Ian Stewart 0% 01452 Z45Jd ianOredhnu~f9.couk

The Br~tish Oak pub m Bowbridge, Stroud was the venue for a fund-raising evenmg in July. Carlos, the landlord, has been rmsmg money for a specified charity each year by laying on a lavish barbecue. This year he ehose the Cotswold Canals Trust

The weather was not klnd so the Trust sales marquee was erected to provide much-needed shelter. The spread was fantastic; not just burgers and sausages, but salads, rice dishes, sea food, vegetarian ophons and to top it all, a hog roast. A barrel of Arrow Head beer (delivered by b a t to Saul Junctlon an the previous weekend) was aerved throughout the evening.

Prof~t from ticket sales, a raffle, and a cut of Stella lager takings contributed to a E220 dooat~on to the Trust. Thanks to Carlos, Marion, Ben, Lotte, Pam of the British Oak together wbh the pub regulars (lncludutg Jacks on the raffle) and CCT members for making the evening such a success.

1 am in contact with a Civil Engineering Tutor BH2S SBA. who is looking for suitable projects for his fmal year students. It is much more encouraging when all the work put in has

a large enough taik and-a cambinaiion of designs, to covsr for example, the restorallon of a length of canal, would be much more su~tabIe. As the "cl~ent" the canal would only have to be clear about the11 objectives. All the other work, such as surveying, would be conducted by the student

It is unl~kely that there will be any requirement for projects for the next academic

at Crick 1 Report by Rayid Jowett

Our pdgrlmage to Braunston for the annual Boat Show was somewhat different this year. Although the show was still organised by British Waterways, Tim CogNan of Braunston Marma felt unable to host the show thls year due to the refusal of the local council to grant planning perm~ssion for overflow moorings. This meant a change of venue to Crick. only f ~ v e miles up the road by car hut nearly a day by boat How would the venues compax? What about Braunston's uolque atmosphere? As it turned out, comparisons would he hard to make. Please read on!

A gallant team set off on the Frlday before Spring Bank Holiday to erect the Trust marquee. &splays and sales tables. The weather so far had been poor but worsened The team got a drenching hefore everything was in place. 1 arrived aJ tea time as they kft the showgmund and put up my tent on a very muddy uneven camp site. We did not realise that thlngs could get worse.

Saierday was blustery and showery and the s h w not so well attended as on previous years. Sates were down and new members in short supply. On Saturday evening after a fireworks d~splay, the heavers opened and cantmued to do their worst with non-stop heavy ram throughout the night and well into next morning. Conditions on the camp site were going from bad to worse, but were nothing compared to sane parts of the showgound where some of the low-lying marquees were upder several inches of water. Although our pitch was on higher ground, it looked as if the show might not open at all today because access to the public car parks was difficult if not impossible.

However, we had not reckoned on the comblned might of the British Waterways team and the voluntary groups who were helping to run the show. Between them they dug trenche$, pumped out water from the worst affected areas, squeezed cars on to straw-strewn mud baths in an effort to save the show. The consensus was that, had this been Braunston, the car parks there would not

have coped The public made their way into the w parks or by shuttle bus from emergency park & ride sites and found their way to the show. Luckily, the rest of the weekend saw less rain and conditions improved slightly.

How d ~ d we do? The weather undoubtedly took its toll so that our takings and recruitment of new members were down to about 40% of last year's figures. However, as usual, it wasn't just about figures. Just being there is important to our profile. We were pleased to greet David fletcher. Chief Executive of British Waterways who presented the Trust with a El20 donation from the show. Roger Hanbury, Chief Executive of the Waterways Trust, was also amongst our VIP vlsltors.

Thanks are due to the British Waterways team and their groups of volunteers who managed to keep theshow afloat Many of us had to be towed off the camp site. My personal thank eo to Andrew Aitchison. a boat owner from -~ ~- the marina, who used his four wheel drive vehicle to pull my car off the camp site after it becamc well and truly bogged down

The venue for next year is not known at present. 11 seems that a return to Braunston IS unIikely at present and Crick is not oermn either. Whatever site is chosen, we 4 1 he there!
