Spotlight on........ AFC Aldermaston Tots U5’s-U8’s Coach

John Graham Coaching the tots is a real challenge and I regularly have to rely on my many years of coaching experience. Starting way back in the late 80s I completed a 2 year sports and recreation foundation course and went on to teach PE in the local schools in Cumbria, this led to carrying out my coaching badges which I have updated to the modern level 1 certificates. I worked in Burnham Copse teaching football skills for several years on my Friday afternoons and recently completed a rules of the game session for year 5 & 6 pupils consisting of 12 weeks which seemed to go down well as I believe these types of teaching sessions are missed, explanations of foul throws and the offside rule was well received and led to many questions. The AFC Aldermaston Tots have been around for a few years now, however I only joined in January 17 as their head coach and the numbers have swelled accordingly to keep me on my toes. Of course one coach can’t look after 18 tots so I have been thankful to Kyle Bone for his help and more recently to Ian Blackman, I believe if you break the groups into smaller numbers then coaching is easier and has more quality. The Tots played in the Basingstoke Colts tournament in June playing 5 games of 8 minutes against other teams winning 1 drawing 1 and losing 3, however it wasn’t about the results it was about playing the game and enjoying the day before receiving a competitors medal and of course the necessary burger and ice cream, I only had the burger……. The Tots will be attending two summer football schools at Rec Soc which will include looking at the home team’s dressing room and facilities as well as discussions on the game and rules of the game in a light hearted manner. We have a mixed group of Tots with girls and boys of differing ages from 4 to 7 and all seem to enjoy playing and learning the game, who knows one day one of them may play for AFC Aldermaston or………….. score the winner for England in the world cup final and in some cases maybe even Scotland.

From the Chairman........... Martin Desay

“A warm welcome”

Welcome Back!!! Season 2017-18 starts here, and it seems such a long time since we last played here at the Rec Soc. All football clubs look forward to the new season, with optimism and confidence as all the hard pre-season work gets tested

for the first time. This year we have had a long pre-season with preparations commencing back in June, and a good number of friendlies under our belt. It’s been great to see that we have managed to keep just about all the first team squad from last season, but importantly we have added a number of new players to our club. We welcome them to the club and look forward to seeing them settle in and add some strength in depth across the team. We have strong competition for places in all positions now, and the players are going to have to perform consistently well each week to keep their place in the team. That’s really good for the club and means that there is no room for complacency or poor attitudes this year. Behind the scenes we have been working very hard to bring much needed sponsorship to the club. I am extremely pleased to announce that we have two new major sponsors for our first team. Orbit Electrical have agreed a 3 year deal to sponsor the first team home kit and Aldermaston Recycling have agreed to sponsor the first team away kit and reserve team kit for this season. A massive thanks to both those companies for their fantastic support to our club. I’m hopeful that I will be able to announce further sponsorship deals over the next few weeks So, for our first game of this new Hellenic league Division One East campaign we welcome back Wokingham and Embrook to the Rec Soc, and extend a very warm welcome to their officials, players, supporters and also today’s match officials to our ground and we trust you located us without too much difficulty, and also travel back safely after the game. Back to today’s game. I’m sure it will be a very lively and competitive game, played in the right spirit with due respect shown by players and supporters to today’s match officials. I’m sure AFC will work hard and get a positive result to send us all home in a cheerful mood and good spirits. The best of luck to both teams, for an enjoyable and competitive game. Please join us in the bar after the game for a post-match drink and chat. Martin

Our club was founded as AWRE Football Club in 1952 by Charles Green, Ted Hall, Gordon Carter, and Don Sharp, and were nicknamed "The Atom Men" after the new-ly founded Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. As the AWRE complex was still under construction when the club was established, the players used empty con-tractors' huts as changing rooms – carrying the tin bath into whichever building was designated for that day's football. The players were also responsible for the pitch, and would mow and mark out the pitch before the match started. The club received support from Sir William Penney during his work at AWRE on the Operation Hurricane project. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, we changed our name, to AFC Aldermaston. In 1979 we were promoted from the Reading & District League into Division One of the Hellenic League, where we spent the next seven seasons. From 1986 until 1991 we played in local football leagues, including the North Hampshire League, before joining Division Three of the Hampshire League in 1991. We finished fifth in the first season, earning promotion to Division Two. However, we were soon relegated back to Division Three the following season, where we remained until 1999. When the Hampshire League was re-organised prior to the 1999–2000 season, we were placed in the Premier Division. When the Hampshire and Wessex Leagues merged in 2004, we became members of Division Two of the Wessex League. At the end of the 2004–05 season we suffered relegation. The division was renamed Division Two in 2006, and was disbanded at the end of the 2006–07 season, and as a result we moved up back up to Division One. 2009–10 season, was our worst season and during a very difficult time we lost 40 consecutive games, which broke the previous record of 39 straight losses held jointly by Stockport United and Poole Town. The 40th defeat came on 8 April 2010, a 2–0 loss to Downton. This was undoubtedly the worst time for the club in living memory, and it took a great effort to keep going at this time. The losing streak thankfully came to an end on 10 April 2010, when we club drew 1–1 against Warminster Town, and then finally winning the next match against Petersfield Town 2–1 win for Aldermaston, to provide a much needed boost for all of us at that difficult time. Unsurprisingly, we finished bottom of Division One with just the one win in 40 matches, and were relegated to the Hampshire Premier League, where played for four seasons before moving to the Thames Valley Premier League for season 2014-15, when we reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup, which we narrowly lost 2-1 to Hale Leys Utd, the final of the Reading Senior Cup played at the Madjeski ,which we lost 1-0 to champions Marlow Utd, and the final of the Basingstoke Senior Cup where we lost to our local rivals Tadley Calleva 2-1 AET. 2015-16 season we finished seventh in the TVPL Premier Division, and again reaching the final of the Reading Senior Cup only to be beaten in a fourth final 1-0 to Cookham Dean. We made a welcome return to Step 6 football as we were promoted to Division One East of the Hellenic League. 2016-17 saw us finish 7th in the Hellenic League this matched our highest ever finish at Step 6 football. We are looking forward to see what season 2017-18 brings and if we can improve on last seasons league position.

Wokingham & Emmbrook Club History Nickname: The Satsumas

Wokingham & Emmbrook Football Club was formed in the summer of 2004 by the merger of two long established clubs from

Wokingham. We are looking to re-establish senior football back in Wokingham after an absence of many years, since Wokingham Town moved from the Finchampstead Road Ground in 1999. The first team are again playing their home matches at Lowther Road in Wokingham.

In our first season as Wokingham & Emmbrook, as the merger ‘bedded in’ and the restructur-ing took shape, under the guidance of Glenn Duggleby as manager and Dave Evans as his coach, the 1st team finished in 11th position in the Hellenic League, Division One East. In

season 2005/06 we finished in 3rd place, our highest ever placing in the league, having been in contention for the championship for most of the season, under the experienced guidance of Tony Calvert as 1st team player-manager and Dave Evans as his coach.

In November 2007 the experienced Allied Counties manager, Wayne Wanklyn, was appointed. Wayne, a former professional player with Reading F.C. and former Wokingham Town 1st team player-manager, appointed existing reserve team boss, Roger Herridge and his assistant Sam Page from the Allied Counties set-up as his coach. Wayne’s strategy from the on-set was to develop his talented youth team into the first team squad. The remainder of the season saw a crop of exciting young talent blend in with the more experi- enced squad finishing in 13th

position. Having won the Reading Senior Cup and finished 4th at the back end of the 2008/2009 season confidence was high that the team would push for promotion. However as the season went on it became apparent that their Cantley Park home would not be developed by the council to support a higher level of football. Despite this set back the young side certain-ly used their momentum from the previous season to soar to the top of the table in the early months of the season. However, the unseasonable hostile weather proved to derail the team’s title hopes but still secured 2nd spot and promotion.

In 2010 Wayne stepped down as First Team Manager and the club again looked internally pro-moting Roger Herridge to First Team Manager and Dan Bateman to Assistant Manager and enjoyed a strong finish to their first season in the Hellenic Premier League finishing 11th.

Season 2011/12 saw more young local players progress through the Allied Counties team into the first team and saw the clubs first matches in the FA Cup in over ten years. A successful season saw the Sumas finish tenth in the league, reach the quarter final of the League Cup and win the Reading challenge Cup at the Madjeski Stadium in May.

In Season 2012/13 the Sumas were able to go a step further on where they had finished the previous season, because, as well as retaining the Reading Senior Cup beating Marlow United 2-1 in the final, the Satsumas finished in 8th place in the Hellenic Premier League. The 2013/14 season saw Wokingham & Emmbrook FC returning back home to Lowther Road,

playing in the Hellenic Division One East.

Dan Bateman and Matt Eggleston took over the reigns as joint-managers in a season

that ended up with Wokingham continuously climbing the table and ending up

runners-up in the league. The Sumas also were able to retain the Reading Senior Cup for

the third season running, beating local rivals Finchampstead 5-0 at Madjeski Stadium in

the final.

The 2014/15 season saw the Sumas determined to challenge for League honours and

promotion from D1 to the Premier League. Again managed by Dan Bateman and Matt

Eggleston this turned out to be one of the most successful seasons since forming

Wokingham & Emmbrook not only winning promotion as League Champions, but also

retaining the Reading Senior Cup with a hard fought extra time victory over local rivals

Binfield and also just missing out on the County Cup losing in the final to Reading YMCA.

Based on the FA /Hellenic ground requirements the team moved into a ground share for

the second half of the season with Henley Town.

As a result of the promotion the club continued to groundshare with Henley but the step

up and a combination of factors from injuries, players work commitments etc it was prob-

ably the toughest season to date and despite the commitment of those who

represented the club it ultimately resulted in relegation back to D1 East.

For the 2016/17 season a management change sees Clive McNelly step up as first team

manager and John Austin take on the reserves mantle . The club are hoping to get back

to winning ways and in particular are pleased to return to Wokingham playing out of

Lowther Road Emmbrook.

Following the Local Council’s approval of the planning application on July 2016. the Club

are now looking to the future with the opportunity to play Step 5/6 Football subject to

funding to erect floodlights , a 100 seater stand and associated works. With this

exciting opportunity and as the club continues to nurture young talent, as the

corner- stone to its development and success, the future looks not only Orange but also

very bright.
